Hey my fantastic fans! Please give this a go if you want a healthier more vegetable focused dish! it can be done in a slow cooker because it does need to reduce for a long time,
Ingredients:
Serves 2
1 cup of red lentils
1 medium sized brown onion
1 tomato diced
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp salt
3 heaped tsp ginger paste
3 heaped tsp garlic paste
3 green chillies
2 bay leaves
1 heaped tsp ghee
3 dessert spoons vegetable oil
2-3 tsp mustard seeds
Method:
make sure you have all your vegetables and spices ready to go,
Wash your lentils a couple of times as well to get rid of any unwanted bits.
Heat up a large high walled pan to medium high heat and add your lentils and 4 cups of water. To this we are going to add most of our ingredients now so we add our bay leaves, tomato, half our onion, salt, turmeric, green chillies, 1 tsp of our garlic and 1 tsp of our ginger pastes.
A few tablespoons of vegetable oil are also good here to help cook the food properly without it sticking once it starts to reduce.
Turn the heat up so you have a rolling boil. This should be reduced down to a custard thick consistency, this should take a good 20 minutes so put it on a back burner while we do the second step.
While your lentils are becoming wonderfully flavoured and reducing down,
to another pan we add 1-2 tbsp of vegetable ghee and 3 tbsp of vegetable oil, turn up the heat to medium high and when the ghee has melted add in 2-3 teaspoons of mustard seeds.
Once they start to crackle and pop, quickly add in the other half of your onion followed by the leftover garlic and ginger paste. let it cook out on a medium high heat for 5 or so minutes or until the onions lose their rawness and begin to go golden brown and all the ingredients have caramelised nicely, optionally at this point you can add some red chillies.
add the ingredients back in to your other pan with your lentils and use some of the water from that pan to deglaze your other pan so you can get all that wonderful caramelised flavour into your dish.
Once these are both combined give it a good stir and reduce down to a custard consistency or until it becomes a sauce rather than a soup! serve over boiled rice and enjoy! - Розваги
Just made this. Got the Indian bay leaves and dried Kashmiri chillis on Amazon. Did it all just right. DELICIOUS!! Couldn’t stop eating it till it was all gone. And my house smells awesome. Am going to make it again on Sunday when my daughter and her mate are coming over for dinner. Looking forward to trying out more recipes from this channel. Makes me proud to be a Yorkshireman living amongst British Asians (who are also Yorkshiremen and Yorkshirewomen).
THANK YOU..FOOD IS SO YUMMY YUMMY
Thats great! I would highly recommend you check if you have a local asian store too. That way you won't need to buy off of amazon if its more convenient.
@@rtsa4633 also it’s important to support our local shops before they vanish of the high street
Just love your comment, it's just soooo, what? Lovely. How sweet, and how loooovely. Just love it. You must be a lovely person. Like me.
Had Dhal quite often in Nepal ... For me it's the taste of Desi area ;) :)
The absolute most important part is to put the lid straight back on as soon as you tip the tarka into the daal. That’s how they get that lovely garlic smokey flavour into the dish. He mentions it in his daal bhuna video. It’s taken me years to figure that out!!! Thanks so much.
Made this for my girlfriend the other day as she was feeling under the weather- brought her back from the dead. 10/10. Your a champ
We feed our young, elderly and sick dhall. Of course though we all eat dhall. Its incredibly nourishing and can provide a full meal when eaten with rice.
Its one of the comfort foods of our culinary culture. Although there are a million dhall recipes, every one of them mouth watering good 😊
Bro, i am glad your girlfriend liked it. But, what ever you ate is not daal. Another thing, and this is not a judgement at all, just saying coz we all can't know everything from all cultures, its daal not dhal.
@@abhinav0686 What a strange comment.
Anyways as daal/dhal is written in other alphabetic systems than the many many many alphabetic systems of the world, then it can be spelt in numerous ways in other alphabet systems. So it can be dhal to some and daal to others who use the Latin/Roman alphabet system.
@@ts4686 you are correct, it is written in a different 'alphabetic system'. That is why I, who can speak and write both Hindi and English would have a better grasp of how it can be accurately phonetically written in a roman script. Because the only thing you can do is to make sound like it does in the original language. I think i would be a better judge of that. Of course, you are free to pronounce it wrong. So it can be dhal to only those who don't want to pronounce it correctly. Of course, you are free to not want to have to do it. Also, English is widely spoken in India. People from many different states can't really speak each others language. We use english to bridge that gap. That is is why more or less all menus in urban and semi urban india are printed in Roman script. Dal or daal has been spelt out in roman script on thousands and thousands of menus in restaurants across India. The correct spelling has been established. But your boy here does not know anything about a 'dhal'. Not how it's pronounced and not how it's made. For that mater if he was even 50 % correct in how to make it i would have appreciated his effort and not bothered with the pronunciation. But his recipe is all wrong, with all the right ingredients, but still wrong from the get go. may be the tempering was ok. Call it what ever you like but please go find someone who has lived in india till they are in their mid twenties and have the daal they make. You will realise what you really are missing out if you though the bowl of mish-mash you ate was good. I also find it highly irresponsible of a professional like him to dish out what ever BS he thinks is daal. He is misleading his followers. I wonder if he does this with other cuisines that he is not familiar with. Rest is up to you man. Cheers
@@abhinav0686 So many assumptions.
Anyways m not sure who youre so upset with about their DAAL recipe. You do know you have commented on a person's comment who said that they made it for their gf, and not directly to the person who posted the video, and nowhere does it say how they made it.
There is a massive Indian diaspora around the world, and as many recipes as there are for various dhal recipes in India, as are there as many changed ones through the various Indian diasporic people around the world, depending on where in the world Indian people were enslaved and moved around by europeans. Indian people took a horrific violent situation and turned it into some of the most diverse global, yet distinctly Indian food by developing their recipes through need. In some of these countries daal has been spelt as dhal, because a 'd' sound in English is not the same 'd' sound in an Indian language, hence the 'h' added to soften the 'd'. The europeans would not allow Indian people in many countries around the world to speak their mother tongues, hence through spelling one had to be reminded of how to pronounce words. These spellings do not follow any grammatical rules. Its purely colloquial vernacular.
Chef, I cooked this when you put the video out and I’ve cooked it so many times since. It’s a winner !
You’re a skilled educator with an obvious passion and respect in what you do.
After visitng India few weeks ago and never eating Indian food I learnt to love Dhal, a first ever Indian Cooking recipe for me and this was fab and so tasty.
This is the best Indian cooking I’ve ever made. Every dish I’ve made with your recipes have been BANGINGGG
5th or 6th time making this recipe and it gets better every time!! Literally the easiest authentic tasting tarka dhaal recipe. Thank you for sharing
Just cooked this today. The family loved it. Thank you for all of your videos. You and your dishes are awesome.
God Bless you for all this gastromonical delight. You were born to do this! The fact you have made it so simple and easy to follow makes you one of the best I have seen so far.
I read a lot of recipes, but there is no substitute seeing how it’s actually made. This looked really good.
Best recipe ever! It’s become such a dinner staple in our house now. Thank you SO much!
This is my new favourite Dahl recipe!
I added mung Dahl as I’ve always used mung in mine.
Lovely comfort food dhal and rice - yummy
mmmm i love it . indian food is the best .
Made this for the family last night and it was delicious. My daughter wants it again tonight. Awesome recipe and video - thanks for posting.
OMG. Just made it. This dish is out of this world. I have been looking for this recipe over ten years from my favourite Indian restaurant that closed on me (sad story). The only thing different that I did, is that I replace Bay leaves(did not have) with Kaffir leaves.
Whenever a post comes up on Reddit about lesser known channels. I always plug you Latif, keep up the good work!
Chris Lewis thank you love the support
This is just the dhal I wanted to learn. Thank you. Any vegan recipes would be great, yes I know...... that word again.
Best wishes.😁
That how I found this channel and so glad I did.
Just recommended from UA-cam. Where on reddit
Great recipe, tasty, and cheap - I normally do it Keralan style and add curry leaves, fresh coriander too.
Just cooked this tonight. So simple. Replaced Ghee with normal butter. Tastes amazing. Another great curry dish.
I love this cuisine, and you have a knack for simplifying the sometimes lengthy cooking process. This really looks delicious, and I am going to make it tomorrow. And a BIG thank you for giving the recipe ingredients and amounts , I have come across videos of recipes without even a link to the ingredients and certainly not included beneath the video , so it turned out to be a guessing game. Don't forget to subscribe !
This is just the right consistency like you did, let it reduce and thicken. That's how I make it.
I have had this in a few restaurants and sometimes it's OK, but sometimes like thin yellow water with a few bits in it. Its easy to mess this dish up if you make it too thin and don't add enough flavour.
the smell of lentils cooking in my kitchen is my favourite smell in the world.
I just made this for my family this evening. They were all amazed. So was I. You have another subscriber. Keep up the good work. I will enjoy trying out more of your recipes.
Yes, please, more! I appreciate your mis en place and showing what the amounts look like as well as giving the measurements. I've been cooking Indian-style vegan recipes for a few years and love these flavor profiles. However, I always left out the bay leaf, because I don't like bay. Today, I learned from you that it is a different type of bay! This is something I love about cooking - always something new to learn!
I could eat this every day of the week - yum!
another fantastic recipe my friend
Your recipes are awesome 👌 👏 👍 all my friends are so impressed with your beautiful cooking! Love from 🏴🙂🌈
New drinking game for every time our friend says, "simple." :)
This has become my go-to dal for cold mornings! Great for dipping Naan or a really crispy sourdough!
Latiff, this has been a hit every time I’ve made it ... even a year after I started making it after you posted it... love this dish
Great dal recipe easy and good flavor thanks for sharing !
Absolutely loved this deal, simple but full of flavour.
oh. my. god. I've just cooked this, and its AMAZING. Beautiful consistency, and great flavour. You sir, are a legend!
Made this tonight and it's truly epic. I think the secret is getting that onion and garlic really dark and caramelized. Such a great flavour that was missing until I tried this recipe
This dish is sooooo good, Chef is a very straightforward teacher, he obviously loves his subject and is passionate about imparting his knowledge. A lovely simple but delicious dish, and I so envy that beautiful kitchen everything too hand and spotlessly clean. Made this old lady very happy.
Love the way you make it simple. Thank you so much.
My children love it wen i cook it 😍; especially when i put a lil bit of a Jamaican twist to it😋
Hope ur channel blows up man. Incredible and easy to follow.
D 2.0 And I believe you, thanks!
Man...you are amazing! I would have never boiled ginger, garlic without frying on oil (to get rid of raw smell) but you did (in your first process) it and taught me a new technique. Thank you!
Thanks chef for such a delicious dish I’m gonna give this a try over the coming weekend thanks again .
Hi, made this for dinner tonight and it was a hit. Unbelievably easy and tasty, thanks very much from New Zealand.
I made this tonight and it was bloody great. I have sort of half tried to make this before but it didnt turn out right but this was amazing. I was just eating some of the leftovers cold and its really nice even still. Great job would love some more vegetable dishes just cos i tend to have those lying around and things like this are great to cook when you dont have anything in the fridge.
Another excellent clearly explained recipe, thanks for sharing
You are pretty amazing! I love the way you cook: from the heart and so effortlessly talented and super generous. How happy you make us when we can follow recipes that really deliver - no secret stages left out! Thank you sooooooo much!
Looks really good, thank you for sharing your recipe with us x
Thanks Latif, keep them coming.
Beautiful, Love Tadka Daal. Especially in the winter
I make this weekly as you’ve made it so easy. It keeps getting better every time too
I made this the other day for first time, it was awesome, thank you so much x
Very nice, I can tell it's delicious! I watched it with my mom who is a great cook, now she is 91 but still loves to supervise cooking for the family-- I saw she liked watching it too! Thank you! From Dhaka
Yummy I love a great Dhal. Looks amazing
My go to tarka dal recipe. Married a benggali so this channel is my saviour
Just found your channel, all I can say, fantastic, great to see how it’s done
This is one of my favourite foods in the world. I eat alot of lentils!!! Xx
Fantastic recipe, so simple but big on flavor.
Loved watching you cook and yes you make it look so easy, thank you .
Best thing about the recipes you show us is that even a dingbat like me can have a go and cook good Asian food.
Thank you 👍🏼
PunkOnWhiskey *POW* lol, that’s what I’m trying my best to keep it simple and really flavoursome
@@LatifsInspired I'm an OAP 69 and I'm making it for my granddaughter x
Is it spice hot? Husband can’t eat spicy food!
@@evelinholmes6401 Leave out the chilies.
It's indian not Asian 😑
Not gonna lie, Mr Latif. Been following some of your recipes! even though I am originally South Asian! Thank you for your time and videos mate! :)
I made this dish and it tastes heavenly. So original and authentic. Thank you 😊
Just eating this now. Best dal I've ever eaten. Amazing. Thankyou
I made this. Thanks for the recipe. It wasn't the flavour I was looking for, but was nice all the same. Unlike other attempts I've made at Tarka Dhal which were bland and no one finished it, this has a good flavour and will get eaten. The predominant flavour was the bay leaf. I was looking for something with more of a garlic flavour and was thinking of using cumin and curry leaves in the tarka.
I was broke the first time I watched this, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. So, got paid, went shopping, got cooking - Happy James ;) Could you show a method for making my own Naans? I;ll keep watching if you keep sharing. atb
Jim
You would need to ask your mother’s grand parents to reproduce if you would like to have your own nans made.
looks very good. Very well presented , and well organized. Thanks for sharing.
Best Dhal I have ever made!! Made this once before, and making it again. ❤
I've not "tried" to cook since university days. After coming across your channel, I'm going to hive it a go again - I hope my wife likes it.lol. Thanks man.
How did it go? It's a nice, simple tasty recipe. Did your wife like it?
Cooked this and it was brilliant! Thanks for putting this one up, I'd love more vegetarian/vegan dishes from you too.
lovely to watch.....big thumbs up
Absolutely love the video for the recipe, thank you! Will definitely be trying it this way!💖
Inspirational! I always thought I could cook a TD but this easy to follow recipe was amazing. A dish worthy of anyone’s last meal, unless you have an allergy to lentils👍
Your comment hurt my brain
Just made this, i didn' have the tomato and the bay leaves, swatched the tomato for a bit of tomato puree, still tasted really good, im going get the bay leaves and the tomato for the next time ...
Thanks for all the recipes!!🙂
Marion S. it’s my pleasure
My goodness looks wonderful thank you for the lesson.
This looks absolutely amazing.... thank you so much. I love lentils and I can't wait to try this. I am really enjoying watching your channel. I love being able to attempt to make these dishes.
Absolutely love the flavour of Indian bay leaves🙌
I buy mine along with all the spices etc from a local Asian supermarket here in Ipswich Suffolk.
Thanks for sharing another great recipe! Any chance you could do a saag/spinach bhaji how to? I've scoured UA-cam and can only find videos on the basic prep, not the finished restaurant style dish.
Thank you for teaching us how to cook with real ingredients. Made this for the first time and it was delicious! The recepie was easy to follow. Thank you
Thanks very much Latif, I will definitely try this healthy dish, I love easy recipes!
Omgee I salivated all the way thru this😁 I could eat this daily. I live in the Scottish Highlands and have limited access to some of the ingredients ( unlike when I lived in Southall) So a wee trip to Glasgow's west end to the Asian supermarkets is in order. Thank you for sharing 😘💕
Lots of Asian food can be bought online. It’s a brilliant service.
That's my breakfast sorted 👍
Breakfast? Wow! Lol!
That bit of sitar music at the end reminded me of going to an Indian restaurant when I was a kid. It was a really formative experience - I grew up in cold grey Lincolnshire in the late 80's early 90's - the taste, the smell and the music. It was exotic and exciting, but also comforting, and Tarka Dhal was part of that. Total comfort food.
Superb video, this is my next dish to try and cook. Thanks
This looks great! More veggie & vegan recipes please :)
I'm trying more vegetarian recipes nowadays and this looks gorgious . I will try this coming week. Thanks for teaching us.
I absolutely loved it! Very satisfying and tasty.
Great recipe. Talked to a friend today who told me 40 million unemployed in India due to covona19. I hope we can work out a way to feed all of those in need n educate our kids to cook too.
Thank you bro great video. The heart of every house is the kitchen.
Well done n stay safe!
That looks so so good, your customers are very lucky ... tfs 👍

wow, wow, I am so hungry now. I can't wait to try this. How lucky are we that you are teaching us how to do this. Thankyou very much Latif
Just followed the recipe and made this, absolutely lovely, many thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍
My partner has grown up on amazing home-cooked Indian food, and her dad has regularly cooked amazing spreads of curries and sides. Cooked this for her last week and she adored it, I'll be cooking for her parents in a few weeks time now! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Man, you knocked it out of the park with that one...definitely making that as a side with the lamb...thank you 👍👍

That's what I have been looking for. Smple and easy to follow. I can get these ingredients easily in my country. Thank you.
Need to try this. One of my favourite dishes.
Latif, this was so nice to watch and learn. I have had this in restaurants before but never knew that it was done in two stages. My compliments to you on how clear and simple your instructions were, as you made it very easy to follow. Compliments also on how shiny and clean everything in the kitchen is.
Love your English accent!
Thanks for making this.
I have never used red dal before, usually we use yellow. But going to try to transition to tarka style : ) Nice and fatty
Loving learning authentic, simple and inspiring dishes .thanks
Beautiful recipe, chef! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
thank you Latif, today I cooked this recipe, it tastes marvelous!
As my body doesnt tolerate ginger :( I took galangal instead and at the end of the cooking process I added some tiny strings of lemon peel and juice - jummy!
This dominates in taste like the ginger. The best oil for health in kitchen is ghee! I make it myself from sweet Irish butter, the best butter I know, once a month.
Ghee is not the healthiest fat for kitchen applications. Almost all saturated fats
Masha’Allah my brudda!
Yay! Following your recipe and procedures, I finally made a dhal that tastes really good. Following other recipes, my dhal never had the depth of flavour and texture I wanted. I think the key is to not skimp on the oil and ghee. Essential for bringing out the flavours of the spices, and for getting the right textures. Looking forward to trying more of your recipes. Thanks for sharing!
I'm newly married and learning to cook using your recipes!!!!! Thank you so much! The description box is soo helpful x
