Wow that was easy to follow !! Thank you !! I always complain to my Mrs she can't make daal and finally today I made it following your instructions it was awesome lol
I love this recipe. It's so tasty and comforting to eat. My only comment is: the ingredients that are shown at the beginning are not all used in the video. I don't use the extra coriander powder, or ginger that's mentioned. Even if you just do the cumin seeds, garam masala, onions, garlic and tomatoes and then throw a big handful of chopped coriander in at the end and cook it in then it still works fine. LOVE IT!!!!
Well I just made this for my lunch and very tasty it was too. I didn't use the 100g lentils as stated in the recipe but used about the same amount in the video (way over 100g) I'm guessing getting the lentils right is key here, over cooking could be a mess, too much water = too watery and bland, too little water = harder lentils or stodgy shite, am i right? I read somewhere to use 3 times the amount of water to dried lentils which i roughly did, turned out ok but did have to tip out some water before adding the tarker to 'thicken ' it a bit more.
Last time I ordered this from my local Indian restruant it was nothing like this!. It was watery with no flavour with a few chopped onions floating on top with a few micrograms of spice thrown in!!. I will be using this recipe from now on. Thank you for showing me a proper recipe. :)
how long did you cook the lentils for ? i had mine boiling for at least 1/2 an hour now and they are still crunchy ... and i already soaked them overnight ?? thanks ... its my 1st time cooking Dal :)
I've read that you should only add salt or vinegar to lentils after cooking as it can have a negative effect on the lentils, is this true? Please explain in scientific detail how the chemical happenings of salt or anything acidic react with the cooking lentils.
Anjum, you sweet young thing, I have spent the last 4 months hunting for Page 134 but cannot find it.......... Please tell me where Page 134 is .... xx
Please don't mind when I say this isn't the Quickest dal ever ;p hahaha. Cuz some of us useless bachelors are surviving on a bowl of cornflakes and eggs and desi sweets and fruits and namkeen and meusli sommmmehow during this Corona Lockdown. So i'm looking for the fastest recipe my pampered little male brain can handle. A colleague and i were having a serious discussion yesterday at the office (they opened up some offices in bangalore with under 30% staff and high corona safety) and he mentioned that a dal can be made in (i mean all the action needed from me) in about 3 to 5 minutes. Taste is not the highest priority right now, survival is ;-) hahaha. i forgot the process though. i'll ask him again. Thank you for your beautiful dal lesson, this dal looks amazingly delicious especially with that butter and lime.
It bothers me that she doesn’t say how much water. I don’t care what anybody says you add too much it’s liquid you had two little it’s Raw lentils. No eyeballing measurements please.
hhahahaha! I feel you! ...my mom takes a handful of salt and sprinkles it on the dish and grabs some other spices and throws them on as well... just add a little bit of this, and that, she goes; and i'm like, whaaaa!!! ...So i actually measured it all out and wrote it down in a notebook. Comes out the same every single time and even my aunty from Andhra Pradesh who is a master chef LOVES my recipe and i never will show it to her ;-)
This is a great recipe. I make this all the time.
This is the BEST recipe I’ve ever tried for Tatka Dal & I’ve tried loads! Thank you 😊
Best recepie ever!
I have been coming back to it regularly for many years now!
I used way less than the recommended amount of herbs/spices and I also used mung dal (yellow) and I really enjoyed it, thank you x
Funny, I use more spices than recommended 😂

I did add a stock cube as I think I put too much water in with the lentils but gosh this is super tasty!

I made this. Turned out really nice :)
Something like that I had in one of Hütte(s) in the Austrian Alps. But it was with pieces of smoked sausages. It was nice.
This is my go to recipe for dhal, extremely quick and so tasty!
Great video! Good job! Looks so yummy, I'm on my way to the grocers now.
Wow, Made it with some tandor chicken and butter curry veggies and basmati rice. Was a hit!
tiov3001 she said she used a couple tablespoons of ground coriander but in the description box it says two teaspoon? Which one did you use x
@@sabz7473 I think I used both... probably don't use that much.
Your dog wants to come in. He's at the door!😀
Yum it was good!
how long did you cook the lentils for ? i had mine boiling for at least 1/2 an hour now and they are still crunchy ... and i already soaked them overnight ?? thanks ... its my 1st time cooking Dal :)
if you dont have a pressure cooker, daal takes a long time to cook on the stove. Atleast a 1.5 to 2 hours, keep adding water if it all evapourates.
Red lentils take a short time to cook. Other may need longer or soaking overnight. Also - always wash your lentils!!!!!
Thank you!

Usually Arhar Dal Or Toor dal is used. It's also called broken Pigeon peas dal.
Anjum, you sweet young thing, I have spent the last 4 months hunting for Page 134 but cannot find it.......... Please tell me where Page 134 is .... xx
Just after page 133 and before page 135. Can't miss it.
0:47 Doggy wants in!
dont u need to wash or soak the dhal first?
no need to soak
Great video!
Very good but (IMHO) lacking in chilli heat (optional) :)
😍 thanks
Gr8 video i guess bcoz of the lady 😜😜😜
Bloody hell! That woman is staggeringly beautiful. I was so mesmerised I had to watch it again to pay attention to the recipe.

Dear Anjum,
You don't tell us how much water to use!
Kind regards,
Robin.
Did you happen to figure out how much water?
The normal water ratio for lentils and other pulses is 3:1. For dal tarkha I use a ratio of 2:1 in a pressure cooker, I prefer it more viscous.
microcolonel For those of us who are bad at math could you please tell us how much what are you used, how many mills or how many cups.
Just eyeball it... It's not difficult :)
If it looks too thick, slowly add more water until it looks right!!
Magic!
if you have the ratios, youdont have towastetimeeyeballingit
"Tumour-ick"!
It's TURmeric as in school term.
And HOW MUCH WATER WAS THAT??? 3 cups ? Nowhere in the recipe do you say add water...
very tasty but not much for 4 - I could have eaten it all myself!
She didn't even wash the dal😄
You didn't even wash the lentils.
But is this really suitable for children ? Very young children (2/7 roughly?) Just thought as this is MUMSnet.
2 might be too young. But school age might be ok, depending on your child
