That bar is for your truck jack
I have parts on up to a fully built setup for that truck. From the looks of it, now is the time to tear down to underneath the blower and check to see if it has a turkey pan mod or it’s time to perform it yourself. Clean everything and get catch cans afterwards to keep your work. These trucks like to detonate. Pull plugs and run tr6 ngk gapped .32. Check for Healy coil work in the past and get you some 8thread cylinder heads if you can afford it. I have a set if in need…
Send your blower to joker too for a refurbishment. EGR delete and metco quick change hub with your choice of lower. No bigger than +6, stock boost is 8, don’t mess with the lower and tune accordingly. Shackles for the rear are cheap if you wanna level the truck. Get you a 4wd tranny pan and these trucks like a good valve body. Remember the connecting rods aren’t forged and are the weak point.
Sooo tired of folks getting exotic or foreign cars and building them. Now THIS project, I can relate to!!! Congrats and good luck!!!!!!

The mismatched shocks and cheap modifications as a 04 lightning owner, made me sad.
Matt Farah was testing an enthusiast's hopped up Acura, and the guy rambled on for a few minutes about all of the horsepower mods he made to the car. When Matt Farah asked him what kind of brakes he had on it as Matt was driving and approaching a sharp turn in the road, the guy had this blank, clueless stare in his eyes and replied "brakes?" The look on Matt Farah's face in the video was priceless!
Original owner in Wisconsin did the mods. They were all as old-looking as the rest of the truck. The last owner didn't want to put a dime into it.
Definitely thinking the previous owner did the mods before the guy he bought it off of.

That tool you took out from under the hood is used to lower the spare tire through a hole in the back bumper
It's also used for the scissor jack.
@@RobRebel72 full size trucks dont use scissor jacks. That tool is for the spare only. The bottle jack it came with is used with the tire iron kit.
I'm pretty sure that at least the 2009-2020 F-150s use scissor jacks. I think my 2001 had one too.
@@RobRebel72 I guess maybe the newer trucks do? All my f150s had a bottle jack under the hood. That tool he took out definitely won't give you the leverage needed to jack anything up though.
My 2003 Lightning has a bottle jack under the passenger seat, just used it 2 days ago. The spare tire crank doesn't work on it.

Awesome video, I purchased my 2002 Red Ford Lightning brand new in July. It only has 74,134 miles on it. Every time I drive the truck it gets tons of looks and I love it just as much as the first time I drove it.
Hardest working man on UA-cam. Who else would get home from work at 9pm+ after a long day on your feet wrenching; then get up at 4.30am, drive 2 hours, leave with the new car at 9am, be back at noon and go straight to work for another 9 hour day. Inspiring for me to say the least. Have a GREAT 4th of July weekend Alex. All the best and greetings from Prague. ( PS : can't wait to see the new garage up and running ).

Those aftermarket pressure caps are garbage, and Ford had an updated part number
Order two of 9C3Z-8101-B, shouldn't be more than $10 each
If you change both and it still leaks, you've got pressure (HG) issues, or a hairline crack in the bottle
Motor rad is OEM it just doesn't have the ford decals same exact cap made in India. Well you probably talking about the one from the part store.
That rod under the hood you were asking about is the spare tire crank. Love the lightning. Best project car ever!!!
Beautiful! I'm no expert of the Lighting line of F150s, but personally, I think the '97-'03 F150s of all types were some of the best looking AND performing trucks ever made. It also seems to be the last generation of trucks made that were able to be worked on by novices and driveway mechanics like me. I have an '03 Sport Supercab with the flareside bed (which needs to be brought back into production ASAP!!) and Triton 5.4L V8. It's still my daily and I refuse to get rid of it until the day it gives up the ghost. Until then, this thing continues to be a BEAST! Thanks for the video. Good choice on the Lightning, IMO!
The long crank bar from under the hood fits in a little hole by the rear plate to lower your spare tire BUT you need a cylindrical 'key' to stick on the end to match the 'slot in said crank....I have a 2002 Harley truck, same engine, and you can't be the Chrome mags on it.....had it since 07 and STILL look at it when I walk away from it....Awesome Truck!
Cold air intake, 6lb lower pulley, Longtubes, xpipe and straight through style muffler catback (flowmaster kills power )with a dyno tune. This is the perfect setup. Spare tire too. Goes in the hole in rear bumper by the tag to lower the spare tire down. Kenne Bell boost a pump is a popular upgrade.

Had a first gen lightning that I wish I never sold. But I definitely would love a second gen, that whine is sublime 👌
1980's VW Caddy, the best pick up for 95% of most people's pick up needs.
Avalonking ceramic coating is actually really good. I did a trial run to see how it worked on my SS Camaro...looked phenomenal. Then tried it on the black AMG C63 coupe.....it's a 7 year old car. But on sections around the rear quarters (that didn't get pelted with Vegas sand from previous owner) the black paint literally looked like a black chrome Zippo. It's legit good stuff, I can't give a reference to how it holds up over time as it's only been 2 weeks. But they are also super nice and email back and forth with ya. I have years of detailing experience for Honda, Isuzu and Jeep Dodge...it's good stuff.
**ya for real...pictures can't do it justice, I have the 8k Camera phone...but it can't replace standing in front and seeing it. My cars look insane good. ...and the snowblower and lawnmower too, why not. No more sticky grass clumps or snow clumps.

Find yourself a period correct cap instead of a tonneau cover. Adds some weight and would definitely be helpful since the lightning isn't big on interior cargo space.

The Syclone is HANDS DOWN the most “iconic” performance pickup of the 90’s - if not of all time. Outshined in some eyes ONLY by the Typhoon.
Some Syclones and Typhoon’s ran 12 second 1/4 mile times - STOCK...
They are so violent off the line.
I have owned 3 Syclones and 1 Typhoon. Awesome trucks.
Crazy now though a single cab short bed coyote f150 can get into the 12s with simple stuff like spare tire removal hitch removal and exhaust. Seen them tipping mid twelves with e85 tune. Add opg and stock sealed engine with turbo or superchargers and they can make 1200hp and run 8s in the 1/4 mile. Its become the new legendary truck for capability. Cyclones and typhoons were cool but not much of a truck and there is a reasons you dont see them. Simply wasnt the most reliable powerplant.

@@bebin73 haven’t you seen all the boxes they hauled in the lightning in the first fast and the furious lololol no but really I have seen people with money use lightnings for work. And the newer single cab short bed coyote f150s all are work trucks. You see people use them all for work and even with blowers see people tow there cars to race and run the f150s as well. Seen a guy bring down his 7 sec coyote mustang on a trailer pulled with his supercharged coyote f150 track wouldn’t hold for his mustang. Ends up racing against a modified zl11le and he ends up using his f150 with 3grand on the line and ran a 9.63 and won . People run them all the time after towing there car to the track or even leaving straight from a job. Awd of the f150 also has made it the go to for street and non prep.
I recently did my first oil change on my Accord 2.0T. The drain plug is canted to at an angle so I slid the pan to the side. The oil came out like it was under pressure and shot over my catch pan. I normally put a large shallow pan or a soak pad under my regular pan…not this time. Now I have a reminder in the middle of my garage floor in the form of a stain. I’ll not forget that lesson…

I have a 93 ford lightning I absolutely love it spun a rod bearing in the 5.8 about a year ago I'm in the process of gathering all the parts to swap a newer lightning engine into it already have the engine and transmission can't wait for it to be done
I have a black 2003 lightning and have always wanted one since high school. They are great trucks can't make alot of power with the junky powder metal rods. Mines got 164k and I would drive it anywhere with no hesitation. Awesome truck enjoy it and get ready for alot of looks.

You probably already know but the bar under the hood is the spare tire release bar. It fits between the tail gate and the bumper on a slight angle into a slot above the spare tire carrier to lower the cable pulley that holds the tire in place . Looking forward to the coolant flush ! 👍🇨🇦
Exactly right. The rod you grabbed from under the hood is used to lower the spare tire as well as to raise/lower the jack
I wonder how many items are going to fall down that drain. It might be a good time to lay a mesh screen over or under it.

My grandfather bought one of these brand spanking new in 2003 when I was 19, it was red and boy was it a beauty. I only got to take it around the block after installing a K&N air filter into it for him. But at least I got to drive it. He did get it lowered a few inches as well so it undoubtedly helped with performance over stock. But man I still wish he never sold it. He sold it in 2011 with only 30k miles for like 20k. An old guy bought it in cash from him, who was a collector of the Lightning. He had 5 of them if I am not mistaken.
Anyways, this video took me down memory lane. I remember the first time he opened it up on the highway for us and man, it SCREAMED! That supercharger really is no joke! ;)
Yes it is for the spare tire. And if you want to make a reliable 450 hp my buddy and I did a lightning conversion on his f150 and did a mono blade throttle body and a killer chiller system and it made a huge difference. Also a catch can is very useful on those engines.

Recommendation- change the Slapper bars for a set of cal-tracks. Calvert engineering. You can set pre load on them. They will launch your truck harder and straighter than the Slapper bars. Not very expensive either. Also, look at Viking shocks.
Project Farm did an air filter test which included the K&N. It’s really good. The result is, You might want to toss it and get a paper filter.
Spec out an aFe dry flow filter....soooooooooo much better than my former K&N!
All performance filters are terrible for engine protection.

If I remember correctly, there is an oil cooler on these trucks, that is prone to failure and it allowed coolant into the oil. I strongly doubt the engine is in trouble even with how hard these get slapped around

Nice video. I own a 2002 true blue lightning that I bought new and only have 40K miles on it. I lowered it similar to yours and put chrome factory wheels on it and a nice tonneau cover with a wing and fiberglass hood with dual hood scoops. When the lightning isn’t on the road it’s parked in the garage. It’s immaculate! I upgraded the muffler with a “Magna Flow”. I been thought a lot of vehicles but I’ve owned the Lightning the longest. It’s a fun truck to drive and I am constantly getting thumbs up when I drive it.
I think you paid a very fair price on your truck. Enjoy your Lightning!

I love my 1999 SVT Lightning. Bought in April with 92k miles.
My coolant was weird too. Turned out the hoses were original and deteriorating internally. It also had a bad intake gasket, from an intercooler upgrade that was done.
Im not worried because Im converting the engine to a 4V setup and adding the GT500 supercharger. Because, I need more Lightning in 2022!!!

Had a 76 f250 for several years and it was all kinds of fun! 390 with a "mild" cam and a pretty decent four-barrel. There weren't many things that truck wouldn't do 😊
Alex, love your channel and the content. The V12 Merc redo is one of a kind content. Nobody has the cohones to take it on other than you, so you have an interesting niche. On pickup trucks, Dodge did a series of stepside “Lil Red Express” trucks, complete with a 360/4 barrel/chrome dual stacks and minimal emissions restrictions due to a loop hole in the rules of the 70’s, which is the predecessor of the Ram SRT10 and now the TRX. Car & Driver also determined it was the fastest vehicle sold in America circa 1979. Which shows how anemic cars had become while they were learning emissions at the time. So, keep on doing. And it’s lb. ft, not ft. lb when talking’ torque.
A/C condenser cleaner from Home Depot, will clean intercooler and Radiator. We used it in the Fire Shop.

Crank pulley looks stock. Muffler was replaced with looks like a FM 40 series. As far as the the rear bumper, get a hideaway hitch. Lets you put a reese hitch behind the license plate. It flips up when you want to tow. Love the truck and love the channel. God bless brother.

Nice! Had my first 03 Lightning in 2005. Then my second 2003 SB in 2011. One of the first few to slap on the 13’ Cobra SC on it.
Alex i’ve been passed by one of those Cyclones. They were very fast. Even in today’s world I still think they’d get respect for what it was/Is.

Fluidyne makes a legit heat exchanger and Mishima to makes a great radiator for these, My temps never go above 186 degrees in traffic. I also have fal fans on mine. You just bought my dream truck. A coworker had one and agreed to sell it to me. One month before we were going to do the deal, his son took it out to get it washed and detailed, he got in a bad wreck. It ended up upside down and it caught fire. Needless to say it was totaled.

That K&N cleaner brings back smiles. I had one in my 05 Tahoe, and the current F350 dually has an Air Raid setup in it.. Not nearly as impressed.. BUT yeah, that cleaner stuff was still around 10 years ago, and probably today. Excellent vid!

@@XxmatixX6videosdiariosdenadav K&N air filters let in a lot more dirt than a paper filter, which wears down the cylinder walls and piston rings. That one is particularly old, you can see the rubber is dry rotted and cracking.

K&N filters are the best. Low restriction, better air flow and reusable. I'll never use paper air cleaner again
Mann, I know far too well about that Rusty overflow and it was a head gasket. They had put stop leak in it, check your heater. Mine didn't smoke or leak either until I flushed the heater core and cleared the stop leak

Hit those brake calipers and that hitch with some POR 15 brake caliper paint. I used some on my 09' Subaru Forester and after 3 Michigan winters the calipers still look nice. It does not flake off.
