What Is A 1999-2004 SVT Lightning? | Ford Gen 2 Lightning History
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- The Gen 2 Ford Lightning was one of SVT's most iconic vehicles with its 5.4L supercharged engine. Follow along as Landan walks you through everything you need to know about the 1999-2004 F150 SVT Lightning and how it's still considered one of the most sought-after trucks to this day.
The popular saying that "Lightning Never Strikes Twice" is clearly not true for this Performance F-150. In 1999, Ford's SVT division released the 2nd Gen Lightning that was based on the current model F-150 of its time. Throughout the 6 year run of the Gen 2 SVT Lightning, fresh upgrades were provided to both the powertrain and appearance departments that we cover in full detail in our "What Is A Gen 2 Lightning" video.

Who wants to see Ford bring back the Lightning?
And add a SuperCrew option! Some of us have kids.
A lightning with a 5.0 would be a beast even without a power adder
I like the new Nitemare by Ford and Roush which has the 5.0 supercharged engine with 660 hp and all wheel drive.
How did they not meet performance standards on a 3rd gen Lightning? 5.0 with a 2.9 whipple with side exit exhaust before passenger rear tire with a step side bed. I loved that flare bed.
I heard they are bringing it back for 2021 but it's electric unfortunately Ford screwed that up
Ford should give the off-road thing a break already and bring back this legend
Gilbert Juarez You know there’s a 2019 lighting out right?
They were trying to make one when they made the raptor, but realized it wouldnt be all that much faster so they just went to off roading.
RAPTOR 479 not from factory some performance shop gets a new f150 and makes a version of it looks legit but not factory
@@raptor4798
Yeah but it's not a factory truck. You can't just walk into any dealer and buy a new Lightning. But you knew that, RIGHT???
Auto Young Close enough for me!
I've got a '01 that I've owned since '03 and I ain't ever getting rid of mine!!
That is awesome! Anything done to it or did you leave it stock?!
Mr. Diggle Yeah, Hang on to it for sure,, Ford and GM both make Shitty Trucks compared to Toyota- So you just hang on to that turdmobile that excites you so much.
@@ambroulard his 01 lightning will smoke any stock Toyota truck.
@@hunterqueen5540 Smoke?? As in spending twice as much time being repaired as a Toyota? I'm sure you're right about that. Bright.
I love my 01 that i bought brand new. It was my dd from 2003 thru march 2016.
Extremely reliable vehicle. It has most of stock bolt ons, built trans. Its pretty quick, mid to high 12 second quarter miles and I take it on long road trips quite often. ♥️😁
These trucks will never get old
nope
U will always see em
It's carzy how much the 2nd gen holds up with time! It still looks like a modern vehicle you could go buy of the lot brand new!
The best truck Ford ever made.
Preach! The viper truck was hyped up. now where are they lol. I see more lightnings on the street then I see viper trucks.
The SRT10 cost a fortune but now they’re really cheap so, I’m actually thinking of buying one.
Yes beautiful truck
Both are great trucks!! Lightning is a better overall package but that Viper truck has a great motor. Just too heavy for the dodge.
I also own a 01lightning and 04 cobra and the lightning is my favorite. My 3 yr old daughter has SVT bug and has claimed both already lol.
Sounds like you are raising her right!
I love my 2000 Ford Lightning after rebuilding the transmission with race clutches and a punisher valve body. Also installed a 150hp power package from LFP.On the dyno I pulled 440 hp and 550 lbs torque.
Nice! The lightning definitely needed help in the shifting department, stock they shift waaaay to slow & soft
@@BrownBomber92181 I took it to the track and second gear is strong as ever.I ran a 13.50 at 102 mph then realized I should have let it cool down before making a pass because it was a hour drive to get there but was excited to see what it would do.
@@darylrichard762 Nice! Yea, prolly a bit of heat fade for sure. I had a 91 Tbird SC 20 years ago & man when it got hot that power would plummit
Just bought a 2000 today, dream truck since I was a kid. It was worth the wait
Cual es mejor 2000 0 2003 escuche que un motor salía malo
Gracias
I have my 2001 since 2001 one vehicle I will never get rid off! Every time I drive it people approach me trying to buy it if you have one don’t sell it you will regret it.
We have a few up here at the shop, we will not get rid of them either.
@@latemodelrestoration im glad to hear that I hope I can get one at some point
I got my 01 with 70k miles, all completly origional from motor to looks, i just got a $3600 sound system installed.
I know I kick my self every time but need the money at the time maybe one day I'll get it back sold it to a family member maybe one day he will need money and that's when I'll come in.
I just got mine like two weeks ago and already has a cam with a full exhaust set up, I love it
I haven't turned 18 yet but I just recently purchased a 03 lightning and I cant express how happy this truck makes me, everytime I see it it brings a smile to my face
Ricardo Vergara NIce bro, Im 19 and just got mine. Faze up

It’s a shame Ford didn’t give it a 4 valve 5.4 like the Navigator or Blackwood with that Eaton blower.
Alex would it be a heavy front or it wouldnt matter other wise
4V heads on a 5.4L would of made for a lot of vented blocks back in 1999. Plus it was easier and cheaper to just stick with the 2V motor already fitted to the truck. Besides the F150 is the GEN4 Fbody of the truck world in that there's not a lot of room for a big blower do to half the motor being covered under the firewall/dash/windshield/etc.
Also a 4V would of added to a noticeably more expensive truck. You could get a L for less than $30K in 99.
Absolutely right. Its also a shame Ford didn't put the 4V 5.4 in more applications. Australia had that engjne up until 2011 making over 410 hp NA
I'm the 3rd owner of a red 03 with 32K miles.. Upgraded pulleys, throttle body, boost bypass, tune and long bars. LOVE IT. Nothing quite like that sound
I almost bought a 2003 fresh off a corporate lease in 2005....Then my wife got pregnant and demanded a house.😅
Damn tight
Wait you actually kept the wife?
@@conorhogan2435 IKR😅
Is it your kid ? You said my wife got pregnant. Not I got my wife pregnant lol jk
You should have told her you can sleep in the truck but you can't race a house.
I was 15 years old, strolling through a dealer lot and what do I see sitting there all shined up and looking pretty? A 2000 Ford Lightning. I grabbed the first salesman I found and asked where are the keys. It was 2009 and I paid 10 grand for her. She was all mine. First vehicle I went 140mph in. I loved that truck!
Sound like you don’t have it anymore?
I raced a couple of these trucks with a 65 gto I had back in the day. they sounded great with that blower whine.
I drive by a house every day on my way to work that has a pair of gen 2 Lightnings, both white. He dailys one of them in the summer.
Is one of them an expedition with a lightning front end? If so he's on the 10th gen f150 fb page can't remember his name
If I didn't own one myself, I'd just have to take a different route to work, it would wreak my day.
It's cool how I was looking at spare parts to get for my 94' on your website then I get recommended this video.
The most beautiful truck ever made.
I bought mine new in 2004. Only thing I've done to it in it's 60k miles was install a Bassani Cat back exhaust and put larger tires 265/18 tires on it. Still looks and runs great with the Charcoal paint. I'm retired now and over that Hot Rod phase.
Sell me it
Want to trade it for a 2010 Taurus SHO , comfortable sedan that still lets you enjoy all the horsepower when you want it
Love my 2003 lightning. You did forget to mention that they went from 4 thread heads to 8 thread heads in the second half of 2003 though.
Good call, but it was really 3-6
I launched a plug in my 01.
Those trucks are wicked powerful. That thing will break sideways and lay rubber as long as you have tires underneath it , thats at road speeds. Love that truck.
Adam, we love the Lightnings. There are a few current and previous Lightning owner at LMR.
I bought a black one new in 01, first Ford I ever owned. I fell in love with it immediately, just a ton of fun. I sold it 6mths later to buy a 69 Nova that I still have and race today. I don't regret building the Nova, it's a dream car of mine, but sure wish I would've kept that truck.
@Jimmythy I Yeah princess I sure did,
@Jimmythy I Lol, is that right.
That front end is gorgeous, probably the best looking front end Ford has ever put on the F150 besides the 2018 & 19 models.
Next to the 90's square body's this generation is the best looking of all modern Ford's! Also the most reliable in my opinion, you still see them everywhere on the road.
@@sublime2craig - My 04 Lightning is still running strong, just the paint is falling off lol.

I think the spark plugs thread length is different between the 99-01 and 02-04 as well as the driveshaft diameter and thermostat opening temperature. Looks like you have a line-loc system on the truck in video. I've been looking for a plug and play kit. Much easier on the transmission and axle mounts than powerbraking.
LMR is my go to when it comes to getting parts for my Ford Lightning truck.
I bought an 03 over 8 years ago at 56k miles. The very first things I did were changed out all of the fluids motor oil/supercharger oil/motor coolant/supercharger coolant/power steering/brakes/trans/rear axle. Also all of the filters oil/fuel/trans. Then I replaced all 4 brake rotors, front wheel bearings while at it, all 4 shocks, pulled off the supercharger to clean out the turkey pan, changed out the spark plugs while at it, put in place a thick submersible 30R14/16 hose over the turkey pan elbow routed to an oil catch can T split, replaced engine pulley water pump, supercharger electric water pump, thermostat, alternator, brake pedal switch, and Y-fitting in the fuel pump. Took me about 10 days doing it alone on my own using simple tools. Cleaned & torqued everything to specs with threadlocker. Now it has 164k miles running strong on original motor and tran with not a spot of drip where it sits.
What is keeping me up at night a little now are the rear crank seal and driveshaft universal joint. There is no leak and no play yet, knocking on wood. Also LSD clutches, keeping an eye out on those 3 things. The driveshaft universal joint I can handle on my own as its probably just a little PITA similar to that of changing out the serpentine belt with the darn cage pulley that had to put a wrench on the bell housing to get the crank pulley loose. Now the rear crank seal would be a different story if it starts to leak. The transmission needs to be drop there's no way around it to get to it. I do not have the tools to drop it let alone clearance from jack stands. It worries me because when it comes to a truck like this. I do not let anybody touch it or do work on it except me. To allow dirty grease, power tools, and not torquing anything down mechanic to put hands on it is a big hell no thank you. Let alone they'd probably do burnouts on these trucks if you leave it with them. Really they do not even see my truck when I buy new tires, they'd only see the wheels. So this rear crank seal thing will be a problem for me when it starts to leak, hopefully never til it gets to 250k miles where I'd probably overhaul the entire motor and swap in a t56 tranny.
I do start and drive it around the block at least once a week to get all of the fluids flowing and gaskets/seals/o-rings up to temperature. Also for the air conditioning compressor and heater core to cycle. You guys that also own these trucks be sure you do the same. Damn ethanol in fuel can rust your lines and internals if it just sits.
Funny story someone got into my truck with a slim jim when I parked it at the airport garage. Little did they know I had a custom quick release steering wheel and the truck was tuned to not exceed 1600rpm and 25mph with my hand held tuner when I left it parked at the airport. The hand held tuner and the custom steering wheel hub were with me of course that prevented my truck from being stolen. But they did stumped on my exhaust tips and vandalized my truck. I had it re-welded under my supervision and slowly repaired the vandalizing on my own. Replaced all of the fluids again including the rear axle in case they had contaminated it.
For repairs that would be beyond me. If any of you know of any trustworthy places that would work on these trucks in the state of CA or FL let me know. Cheers 🍻
Great video never knew it came in so many colors
I love the 93 SVT lightning with the 351, and absolutely love these aswell
I would love SVT to bring back the Performance version for the streets instead of Off Road, don't get me wrong. I love the Raptor's aswell...
Lightning all the way! SVT
Ya until you buy a 2011-2014 Fiesta ST or Focus ST (SVT Design) Horrible reliability on the Dual Clutch Transmission, Turbos, Cooling System (Overheating), and they burn through clutches like no other!
The gen 2 lightning is by far my favorite!! Wish I could find one around here.
I don't know what this guy is talking about but the Lighting is faster then the Dodge SRT 10.
That gorgeous front end made me realize this is my favorite F-150 generation 😍😍😍
The design has actually aged pretty well
My dad owned 2 growing up a black 2001 and a oxford white 2003, he had many quick cars before them but those lighting's I will remember the most riding shotgun with him especially when he pullied, tuned, got a shift kit, traction bars and bassani exhaust on the 2003 cant forget the nitto 555Rs on the back, such a sweet truck visually and physically 420hp & 500ftlbs to the wheels. Gave Corvettes a run for the money at the time.
My Dad owned one. 20 years later I am dreaming of buying one. This is my dream car!!!
Louie dreams do come true so don't ever give up!

Very clean truck sir! I love me a nice svt lightning!! ⚡️🌩 thanks for this video! Was very informative!!
Damn what a truck. Imagining them bringing back the Lightning as a surprise after unveil the 2020 Bronco... I would die. This truck is fire.
Love your video I have a 2001 Ford Lightning red love that truck it's modified very quick
I purchased my 01 Lightning brand new with 4 miles on it and it currently has 26k on it,bone stock no mods and it’s garage kept,I’ve never kept a car for more than a few years, I still enjoy it and have no plans of getting rid of it..
Hope you enjoy it to the fullest, those trucks are something else 👌
Mine is a 2nd gen 1st year 1999 lightning had it since 2005 I'm the 2nd owner. its black got the ford motorsports lowering kit and it's squatting on 24s love it still goes through the traps in 12:80s 1/4 ml.
Ive owned a gen 2 L since 2000. Bought my 03 in 07 and sold my 99 in 09. My 03 has 51k and I love it still.
I wish there was another sport truck war with the big 3 again that would be cool to see them go all out. I could only imagine the stuff they could put out, a regular cab raptor body lighting and a hellcat ram and chevy coming out with a SS/Cheyenne.
Gerardo Rodruiguez not really, modded maybe. maybe neck to neck with the QC SRT but defo isn't faster than the Single cab SRT
One of the best looking trucks of all time in my opinion 😊
These really are special, diesel transmission case, ford expedition rear axle, tons of touches sadly means we cant build our own off the shelf, these are very rare in more ways than one.
Holding onto my 2000 lightning “build number 144 out of 4966” for as long as possible. Love my damn truck and so does my fiancé lol Plus the value of these trucks have sky rocketed! Bluebook is at 17k now for my almost 20 year old truck. Paid $9,500 for it back in 2011 which was a steal no doubt. It’s going to be worth more than my 2016 mustang gt premium in a few years 😂🤣 daily drove it for many years without a single issue. 104k miles on her now she still fires up and gets the job done no matter what!
chpjimmy keep that truck man
This trucks are big piece of sport trucks history now.

I current own one Chevy Silverado mark3 I wanna buy another one this where build by shop in Texas back in the 90’s only few are around I wish I could share pictures
Buddies uncle bought one couple years back for 9.3k, damn trucks now over 1k horsepower
Had me a 2003 Lightning and loved the shit out of it. Until it was totaled in a crash. Still think about it from time to time. Loved hearing the super charger spool up and getting 6 mpg. Lol
Dear Ford: Make 3rd Gen Lightnings, use new cobra motor thanks

Regret getting rid of mine, it was a 2001 black lightning. Is been a year since I don’t have it.
So sorry bro lol. I never heard anyone say they were happy to be done with their Lightning.
I love my 2002 SVT Lightning ⚡️⚡️⚡️ It’s all original with 32,307 miles on the odometers.
I hope to get one
I've always loved these. Eventually I'll have a blue one. Doesn't matter which blue. I love them both. But eventually I will have one.
My dad used to have a black one 2003 I believe and he loved it. But had to sell it he didn’t want to but because of me and we needed a house so that’s sucked I would of loved to see this still in the driveway when I was born back in 02
Let the gasoline Ford lightning compared to today's Ford lightning electric I would love to see those two trucks compete each other
No other truck comes close the the Ford lightning. The lightning is the best truck in the world.
I didn’t like the side exit exhaust. I preferred it to run duals out the back. This motor was very tame in stock form, but with a pulley change, larger injectors, better exhaust and a retune this truck woke up. I’ve seen guys slap on bigger heads, cam swap along with the stuff already mentioned and it was sick.
such a great, truely informative video
Actually, the pistons, rods (forged powdered metal) and crank (Krupp forged steel) were ALL different
I need me one of these
It's my understanding that the L shared the 4r100 with the 6.8 V10, not the PSD.
Love these trucks!
2020 and I still want a 99-04 L.
Awesome upload 👌
They need to bring it back!!!
It would have more electronics then needed, to heavy, 2 doors to many and be retarded priced...it would fail miserably
Never getting rid of my 02 passing it on to my little one when he is old enough !
Thanks dad i cant wait 😂
Supercharger on a Gen2 Lightning was 1.8 liters, not 1.4. And, seems like all those magazine performance numbers were SLOOOOOOWWWW. My '99 all stock ran 13.6 in the quarter.
Forgot to mention the Thunderstorm, which led to the Rouch Nightmare...Thunderstorm was a joint venture between Ford and Johnny Lightning...the next Ford supertruck that could have been.
It’s a mf flashback, these truck are probably worth more now then 20years ago. Starting to see a lot more here in hawaii. I have a 99 expedition dropped but, these truck are something new.
Are you gonna do one of these videos on the SRT-10 truck? I’d love to see that.
I think this channel is focused on fords only.
Oh man I love the ford 5.4 2v. So underrated. They make big power and their so cheap to build. I love the lightning. Forged cranks in these is almost a given. I have 3 forged cranks they can handle 1500 hp all day. The iron block 1500 hp. Ford really made the modular perfect except the cylinder linners. Can't bore them out is the only down fall. You gotta sleeve them. I have a few supercharger 2v intakes on hand for future builds. I live the 5.4 more than that coyote.
The 4V 5.4 was making Coyote like power 20 years ago
Qué año es el 2v y el 3v

DSG was one of my favorite colors. My 03 Cobra was DSG. Your truck looks great in that photo!
At 6:20 that pic of the sonic blue L, who’s truck is that? I built one that looked identical to it before I sold it!
Pretty sure the Gen3 Lightning project was cut because Ram murdered that entire generation of F150’s. Ford was originally planning on at least a couple more years of production of those turdy gen trucks, that would’ve included a Lightning.
My fav truck.
somebody needs to remake these body kit parts...😏
Some ford dealers have look it up (it has 2gen logo)

They're great daily drivers! Just remember, your gas mileage might not be that great from stepping on the gas all the time! 😆😂
They're great, other than the gas mileage and having to put $5+ a gallon premium in.

I always thought the srt 10 was never as fast as any lighting? 🤔
You can't really compare the 4th Generation Lightning to the 2nd Generation. The 4th is made for Off-Road performance more than Street-Track performance. The 2nd Generation I would consider a Street Truck and the 4th an Off-Road truck all the way, I really hate even calling it a lightning. Didn't the SVT team and Ford make the 2nd generation to compete, or better, beat the Chevrolet Corvette?
