As a person literally starting out, I'd totally make the sandpaper holder. First, it build one for each grit I have to organize them. Second, I hate trying to line the holes up. Third, it could be a fun first project for learning how to use dowls, stain, etc. I agree, if you're experienced it's likely pointless but for newbies, I'm making it.
I like Johns videos because he reminds me that I don't have to be perfect. I just have to be willing to fix my screw-ups, alter the design, or start over, until I give up and say it's good enough.
90% of woodworking is fixing mistakes. Then people will point out "Oh I like how you used a different kind of wood for this part" not knowing you ruined your last bit of the original wood. lol
as someone who is disabled, i think the sandpaper holder is really useful! my hands shake pretty badly because of my medicines, so i have difficulty lining things up. being able to just pop a sander onto the holder and come away with a perfectly placed piece of sandpaper would be a godsend for me. it would make the whole task way less frustrating! its like the little needle threading pieces that you can get for sewing - really simple, and not everyone needs them.. but a really, really helpful tool for those of us who just can't get the damn thread through the eye
Normally I dont have trouble lining it up but sometime my hands also just cant seem to coordinate and get perfect placement. When I saw this I was thinking its genius and I need to make one. Though I think if you round the tops of the alignment pins it would make loading paper onto it much easier and faster as well as make popping the sander on it way quicker since it would catch faster then guide.
Just buy mesh sandpaper and then it doesn't need to line up. But wouldn't you still have to line it up to get it on the holder? It seems like if your hands shake a lot you could just use a dowel and line up one hole, rotate to get the rest. I know it's old but I'm really curious if you do enough sanding to know from experience or just assuming from other tasks?
@@kbo8029Mesh is not the same as sandpaper. I have boxes of round sandpaper that I got at a steep discount and lining up the holes make a huge advantage in removing dust. I also replace the sand paper long before it wears out and have boxes of sand paper that is still in good shape. Its less work to replace sand paper than the extra time it takes as the paper wears down.
I was so pleased you seen Dusty's joints some the joints that man creates are just insane although loved the mallet. John how about a easy build video series to sell for Christmas maker's?? A no you'd get squirly with them?? Maybe tiktok inspired?? 🏴🤣👍
John, great video of the corner joint. Sadly I lost most of my tools when I was in the hospital. But I'm back in the saddle again. Looking forward to more of your videos ✌👍
I love that joint ! Even better you too can own that quality of saw for $50-$150! Those are modern reproductions of the original Dewalt RASaws. A model RA(round arm) or slightly newer square arm 1030 are out there cheap for a little TLC and maybe some motor bearings. And yes a new copy is $5 -7K !!!
Great video John and ya Dusty is insane on his joints rebuilding my woodcraft shop after the 2 🌀 hit me slowly and itching to really get into some of his joints I like this one you tried be a cool accent to a deck....
I think I'm gonna have to disagree on the sandpaper dispenser/holder. I think if you have a lot of sanding to do it is beneficial especially since the sandpaper is usually more or less lined up in the big packages. When I re-finish furniture I don't often use chemical stripping agents and prefer to sand the old finish off entirely since you have to remove any impregnated wood anyway so if I'm burning through a bunch of 60 or 80 grit on a 120 year old desk that would be a killer thing to plop right on top as I go
Yeah. Just open a box of 50 put the jig into the wholes flip the box and you've got a refill station. Single movement to put a new sheet on. It's not necessary to align the wholes better but it is a cool idea for quick changing the sandpaper
agree you could even mount it on the side of the bench or the wall, i dont think its so much to line it up but a good way to organize and get another without looking for a new one
I very much agree with you. The only reason they dont really need to use it is cause they have mesh vs normal sandpaper and the holes to line up are completely unnecessary. But if it were for mesh it would be so helpful to have for a quick reload without having to look to line up the holes.
Watch Joe rogans video on all the massive privacy issues it has , you giving the app 100% control of your device. Yoy give it full access to everything on your phone
I'm just starting woodworking, but the sandpaper holder makes sense to me. if I had a sanding station where I could have multiple of those set on a table, and not have to deal with boxes or anything, I think it would be worth it.
Dusty Lumber definitely has some skills! Haha the ridiculous things that people put out there. I have to admit was surprised you took the time to make the sandpaper holder.
I mean the joints he uses are old as hell. It's how everyone built everything before nails were easily obtainable (That would be in the past 100 years)
When will we see the Bikes and Beards crossover happen? Mini series were you build a wooden motorcycle? Or perhaps you got for a Ling distance ride with them? Love the vids!!!
I'm sorry but I disagree on the sandpaper Thing, I don't know if you lineup the holes when you put that disk on but I always have problem lining them up I don't know if I can't see right or what but it doesn't work good.
Also .. if you need a place to store your disks when you buy a pack, then why not build a base, add 2 dowels (you only need 2) and have them ready to go ... would also be good for kids that want to help but haven't developed all the fine motor skills ...
I have my dad's old craftsman radial arm saw from the 80s. It's not very accurate anymore and isn't very strong, but man, I'll take it over a table saw any day. I'd love to have a new one, but like you said, they're not cheap anymore. Only a couple people still making I'm think anymore.
Wait...I am actually into the sandpaper dispenser idea. It seems like a clean way to store all your grits and it is a nice idea if you plan to make a rack of them or something. Idk maybe I'm just too ocd. Lol
Yeah I like it too. Obviously it isn't for everyone since John hated it so much but it definitely looks like it might work well for some people. I haven't tried it out yet though so I might not like it 🤷♂️
Even if you have to take it out of a box/wrapper to keep dust off it, if you are sanding down a big ole boat or do tons of sanding I could see that jig saving a lot of time down the road
As usual, I had a blast watching this...I actually made a mallet for my son just like that using Padauk, Tiger wood, and a spalted maple handle...wish I knew how to get you a picture of it...Keep on rockin Mr Maleki!!!
I just watched a few of your milling videos, and I got an idea. I would like to see a 3-4 part series of videos showing a tree from being felled through being milled to a finished peace of furniture... as many of the steps as possible of the same tree, from tree (or log) to finished product. Whether you make a slab table, cut up boards and build a tree house, make a chair... not important. The process, with you explaining your thoughts during..... Love your work. 👍
That last joint was really nice! I just wish that I had something to use it on...... yet. I will wonder around my home, while scratching my head and simultaneously rubbing my chill until an operation presents itself. If that doesn't work, I will repeat the last process but add swinging a very large hammer and/or crow bar....... I'm sure that this joint would work to fix a 1080p TV that's had a crow bar and/or hammer accident 😁😆👍👍👍👍👍
Welding, diesel repair, electrical, plumbing, MOWING and wood working yall make it look so easy but my monkey brain can not get anything looking so good props on that joint in the end!
Radial arm saws are a dime a dozen on internet sales places (you know the ones). People are cleaning out grandpa's house and don't know what to do with it. I've got an old American made Delta in the garage right now. Grew up with one and I love it. They were just too dangerous and non-portable so fell out of favor.
Love that last joint, just thinking how amazing it would look with contrasting wood for table legs, preferably with a flush edge top or a transparent top.
You guys need some traditional gouges I’m 14 and a woodturner /woodworker and I have learned to use traditional gouges they are so rewarding once you learn how to use them
The sand paper holder is for people like me who need the holes to line up perfectly cause for me yea it does take me a long time to put it on and it's a convenient to store them as well instead of just laying loose
Thanks for the mention! Ohhhh people were mad when I used a dermal to chamfer the top 😂😂
Honestly it was kinda smart haha you saw how much tear our I got! Congrats on crushing it 💪🏻💪🏻

Oh my the mallet breaking and John losing it after all of the hard work; PRICELESS!!!
FYI just so you know we share the same goofy sense of humor.
I don’t laugh how I did at anything on my phone, that had me creasing 😂
I'd say make a coffee table utilizing some of his different joints on each corner.
hell yeah, thats the new plan
Could be the next 3 phase challenge. That’s be awesome.
A "woodworking" table would be cool.
Is Sam not working there anymore?
Make a coffee table with coffee table books

The "Dusty" joint would make a cool table leg!
Many videos ago you used Bumblechutes as a finish and I tried them out after I saw that and I love that way better than total boat
Exciting to be this early with the rest of you all!

The mallet was great, I did one but add a heavier handle and added some steel in the mallet head to give it weight and better balls.
I am really enjoying the viral tictok, videos. I hope there’s more!

I like the sandpaper dispenser. I fumble with sandpaper after developing carpal tunnel and that would make life easier.

Wait...I am actually into the sandpaper dispenser idea. It seems like a clean way to store all your grits and it is a nice idea if you plan to make a rack of them or something. Idk maybe I'm just too ocd. Lol
Plus whenever I get packs the holes are lined up already in the package. It's a great idea.
Yeah I like it too. Obviously it isn't for everyone since John hated it so much but it definitely looks like it might work well for some people.
I haven't tried it out yet though so I might not like it 🤷♂️
If it's in your shop, it will have airborne sawdust collect on it reducing the amount of grip, that's the true faulty part of that idea.
Even if you have to take it out of a box/wrapper to keep dust off it, if you are sanding down a big ole boat or do tons of sanding I could see that jig saving a lot of time down the road
If you do just use slightly thinner pegs. That way its easy to load up and you can burn in what grit is on what holder.
Great videos. All fun with a little skill. Story of my life

It was not drywall saw, but saw that is designed to hold reciprocating saw blade. So basically same blade should be used for both saws at the test.
