      While I’ll agree TP has a better story, are we really going to turn down BotW’s gameplay mechanics over TP’s? I know the learned sword moves are great, but compare BotW’s climbing ability, paraglider, horse-breaking, crafting, more weapons, better enemies, bigger more explorable world, I could go on.
      NGL though, I love TP. I just happen to think compared to BotW it is an odd matchup.

      I have about 280 hours on BotW. There was one day, where I woke up at noon and started playing, and only stopped to shower and eat. I kept playing until 2pm the next day. So I played BotW for 26 hours straight lmao. It's so good

    I actually love Spirit Tracks' story. Ghost Zelda is the best companion ever and the character interactions between Link and Zelda are great. She literally gets killed by a new villain named Chanceller Cole who is a demon disguised as a human within Hyrule's government. He wants to revive the Demon King by getting rid of the Spirit Tracks alongside Bryne who is also a well-developed character. It's the most unique plot out of every Zelda game; you should give it a chance. Ganon is nowhere to be seen or mentioned.

    Also Skyward Sword is a good game. It has flaws that the series shouldn't have, but it has amazing dungeons, some fantastic locations (The Desert, Sand Sea, Eldin Volcano (on its first visit), great item upgrade system as well as supplementary system, and a great story with a cast of lovable characters. The fact it didn't appeal to what you prioritize in a Zelda game (Free form exploration) does not mean it's a bad Zelda game. It definitely would have benefited from free form exploration, but the real problems with the game lie in the hand holding, reused locations for boring parts, and over emphasis on the Wii remote in some mechanics. That said that isn't enough to consider it a garbage game because it clearly isn't, it still has more than enough good things in it to be considered a good Zelda game even if it is still the one with the most objective problems.

    Most of my favourite Zelda games take place outside of Hyrule, Link's Awakening (it has so much charm, was made the year I was born & was the first Zelda game I ever played- it was the one that hooked me for life), Majora's Mask (the story line is so engrossing & unlike all the pussys that hate the time travelling aspect- I thought it was revolutionary) & Twilight Princess (technically this does take place in Hyrule, but it's mostly in the twilight realm so it doesn't count in my mind- the imagery is unlike any other Zelda game). Personally I think it was rather biased to base your hatred on Spirit Tracks simply because you don't like Phantom Hourglass. Yes I will admit I hate Phantom Hourglass as well and it's one of my most hated Zelda games, only beaten by Four Swords and Zelda NES (AKA Zelda 1) You basically stated the game fixes all of Phantom Hourglass's problems, yet dismissed it simply because of an already distaste for another. Spirit Tracks fixes all of the issues from Phantom Hourglass and manage to be one of my favorite Zelda games in the series. And it is a sequel to both Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, considering both Link and Zelda are descendants from the former.
    As for Majora's Mask I don't agree with your defense of the criticism a minority have against it. Sure you can reset time to redo everything, but why would you want to reset the day during a dungeon when getting the dungeon item? That's rather tedious, and the only trade off is skipping plot events, you'd still have to navigate large sections of the dungeon and in some cases like Snowhead and StoneTower which are HUGE it would be a chore to navigate through them, especially since the latter can be quite confusing for some. It is manageable to beat the game with the full three day cycle, it's just a matter of doing all the required side quests/plot related stuff, resetting the day and starting the dungeon fresh. You also didn't mention player's should use the "Inverted Song of Time" to slow down the flow of progression that way feeling rushed is reduced and still finish the entire dungeon. True leaving a dungeon means you can enter another Temple and do them out of order (which I have done before) but still.
    Aside from these two points I enjoyed this review overall. As a rabid Zelda Fanatic (it's my favorite Nintendo franchise) I enjoyed your commentary as always, you always have nice humor and your blunt approaches never cease to entertain me.

    • @HyperCharge
      @HyperCharge  7 років тому +6

      Well, I played Phantom Hourglass and never beat it because the game was so terrible. So when Nintendo released a trailer for Spirit Tracks and it was basically the same thing with some minor changes, I wasn't too excited. I mean if you disliked a game and Nintendo released a direct sequel to that game that isn't that different, would you spend money on it? How many people who hated Paper Mario Sticker Star went out to buy Paper Mario Color Splash? I know I did, but I did it to make a UA-cam video to shit on it! I have a clear bias, but that bias is based solely on the fact that Phantom Hourglass is a bad game. I don't even think that I said that I hated Spirit Tracks at all. All I did was point out the fact that I never played it, gave a brief description of it's improvements, and bring up that the quality of both games doesn't really matter to me because these are just handheld Zelda games. I heard that it wasn't too bad after a couple of years, but at that point, I just never really gotten around to playing it to see for myself. Maybe there's a small chance that it would become my favorite Zelda game, but I don't think that's ever going to happen. After all, all Spirit Tracks does is improve on the terrible mechanics of Phantom Hourglass. At it's worst, Spirit Tracks could only be slightly better than Phantom Hourglass, but at it's best, it's just going to be another handheld Zelda game.
      As for Majora's Mask, it's not a matter of WANTING to reset the clock, it's a matter of running out of time and having no choice. If your really struggling with Snowhead and your on your final hours, you'll HAVE to play the song of time or else your going to get a Game Over and lose all of your progress. Now, the arguments that I hear about Majora's Mask is that people dislike the feeling of having to reset the clock because they think that they're losing all of their progress, where I was arguing that your actually not losing that much progress at all.
      I don't know if you remember how Snowhead or StoneTower are designed, but they require you to backtrack to the start of the dungeon after you get the Fire Arrow and Light Arrow. After you get the Fire Arrows in Snowhead, the immediate goal is to go all the way to the bottom and raise up a giant tower to make progress. Whether or not you reset the cycle, you'll have to backtrack all the way to the bottom in order to raise the tower, regardless of playing the song of time or not.
      Stone Tower is another great example. After you get the Light Arrow, you have to exit the dungeon and flip it upside down. It doesn't matter how much progress you made in the dungeon up to this point, because once you have the light arrows, you can immediately flip the dungeon whether or not you reset the three day cycle. This is kind of the point I was trying to make.
      Your arguing that you would still have to navigate large sections of the dungeon when you reset the cycle, but in actuality, your still going to have to backtrack to previous rooms, regardless of whether or not your resetting time. The other two dungeons work in almost the same exact way, with some minor differences. In Woodfall, you can hit a switch to immediately gain access to the second floor, and in Great Bay Temple, you can immediately freeze the water to change the current of the water. Whether or not your going to reset the cycle, you'll still have to perform the same exact actions in order to make progress.
      The initial fear that a lot of people have with this game is that resetting the clock will reset ALL of their progress, but that's not the case at all. In a situation where a player was able to get the dungeon item, but ran out of time before getting to the boss, playing the song of time would only make them lose progress up until getting the dungeon item. If you ran out of time in Woodfall, you can start the dungeon by immediately going to the second floor. If you ran out of time in Snowhead, you can just start the dungeon by raising the tower. If you ran out of time in Great Bay Temple, you can immediately freeze the water to shift the water current. If you ran out of time in Stone Tower, you can immediately flip the dungeon.
      I didn't bring up the Inverted Song of Time because it's mostly just a crutch. Like I said before, the games balanced in such a way that resetting the clock doesn't punish players too much, so being able to do entire sections of the game within one cycle is completely unnecessary. It's helpful for newer players, but it's by no means required. It's nice for the dungeons if you don't want to feel rushed, but like I just pointed out, it's not that big of a deal if you have to reset the cycle.

    Mega man x retrospective?

  • @ThornHailsnap
    @ThornHailsnap 3 роки тому

    Great video, but I gotta say, this feels less like a retrospective and more like a rant about why you prefer some games over others. I mean you start out giving objective summaries of each game, but right around Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask you begin to include your personal takes and opinions not just on the games but on the people who played them too. By the end that's pretty much all it is.

    • @HyperCharge
      @HyperCharge  3 роки тому

      I've seen this comment a lot and I don't necessarily disagree, but I still think it operates as a 'retrospective' from a more personal fan experience. I mean, the whole point of a retrospective is to evaluate the past body of work and compare them to each other. I suppose if you see a retrospective as a sort of objective point A to point B list of achievements, then I do agree that this video goes off the rails and fails at providing a more 'historical approach' as it's completely biased from my own perspective on the series.
      On the other hand, I think the reason people like/dislike certain Zelda games does come from having those own personal biases on how they experience the series, which I find way more interesting to explore along with how the series progresses overtime. I mean, in a bubble, Skyward Sword was a successful game that received critical acclaim and sold a lot of copies, but that's not really telling the whole story of why I personally disliked it and why others did as well. There's a entire ebb and flow between games being released and fans reactions to those games that lead up to Skywards Sword, so being more objective by ignoring my own personal opinions and stating the facts wouldn't necessarily explain why some Zelda fans just so happen to not like Skyward Sword, despite it selling a lot of copies and getting good reviews.
      At the end of the day, the video didn't turn out like all the other 'UA-cam Retrospectives' in the style of "point A to point B list of achievements you could pull off a wikipedia article" type of videos, but I think it still operates as a retrospective by showcasing how the series changed overtime and how I liked/disliked certain changes based on my experience following the series and playing the previous games. After all, the whole point of retrospectives is to showcase and evaluate how things changed overtime, both good and bad, and then provide feedback on what worked and what didn't, so obviously I'm going to compare and contrast the previous games because that's kind of the whole point.

    I agree that Skyward Sword sucks but you really don't understand why the Wii was a great console. It was literally every console previous meshed into one. You can play the entire console Zelda series on that one console. You can play some Japanese exclusives like Rondo of Blood. You can play Super Contra. You can play Mario Kart Wii and at the time you could play online easily for the first time. You could play Mario Galaxy 2. You could play Guilty Gear Accent Core. You could play Chibi Robo. You could play almost every game Nintendo ever put out!
    It didn't have enough games that were made for you specifically? Boo-fuckin-hoo kid. Ignore tutorials, skip the easy modes, and find the hard and obscure games that no other console ever had.
    Yeah Wii Music sucks, Miyamoto hasn't made a good game since the 1990s. If you realize why the Wii was so flexible you'll also see why it was so good.

  • @thelastwindwaker7948
    @thelastwindwaker7948 4 роки тому

    Same with A Link to the Past, although I grew up with the original and didn't play another Zelda until Wind Waker. LTTP was functional and refined compared to the garbage fire that is the original, but didn't really do anything special. None of the dungeons are memorable, the story isn't anything to write home about, and the only character who stands out in that game has a name that can't be pronounced by anyone who isn't on God's speed dial.
    As far as 2D Zelda goes, I think even the Oracle games have more going for them. Then again I actually prefer the more linear structure of these games, and being told to fuck off for a hundred hours because nothing matters is the easiest way for me to want to turn off your game and play something else.

    This video went off the rails hard when you started critiquing the DS and Wii era games for being pointless trash. It's not that I disagree (I do disagree, but that's not what bothered me), it's that you started just ranting about idiots and the tone changed drastically. This started out as a concise and well-done retrospective.
    As for the few serious points you made while ranting, I think Skyward Sword was very flawed and infuriatingly handholdy, but still a fantastic experience in its own right. There's an ebb and flow to how people perceive these games. Skyward Sword received very high scores at launch but fell out of favour with the community in the interim years between it and Breath of the Wild. Since the latter has done so much to revolutionise the series, Skyward Sword is now seen by some as this super pointless, bad game that experimented too much to get the old formula right but stuck to it too much to be considered anything truly new. But it will have its day in the sun. People are going to appreciate it more in the future.
    The DS games may be a different case. I cannot speak to Phantom Hourglass, but I can say that I found Spirit Tracks to be a very good game. It's kind of boring and devoid of content, but it's a great example of a handheld Zelda that tries something new and doesn't stumble, despite its hardware limitations. Here, too, there's been a bit of give and take in public perception, but I get the sense that most people simply don't care enough to feel strongly one way or the other. You didn't care enough to even play it! Which is a shame because it's a pretty neat little game. B-tier? In some sense. But still a worthwhile Zelda experience. Check it out.

      Yeah, the tone shift in this video is pretty drastic and to someone who isn't accustomed to my other videos, it's really jarring. I suppose it's a combination of Zelda games not really changing things up and also that I started to not enjoy the DS and Wii games as much as the earlier games, so the videos loses a lot of basic explanation of gameplay mechanics because there wasn't much to explain, while also getting more frustrated because of all the new changes I disliked. I suppose I didn't really take that into account when I made the video, because it wasn't exactly intentional on my part.
      Looking back on Skyward Sword now, I do appreciate a lot of the game play changes that made it into Breath of the Wild (stamina system, crafting, upgrading equipment), but I still think it's the weakest home console entry when compared to the other 3D games. Honestly, I think it's much easier to appreciate Skyward Sword if it was one of your first games in the series, because without the context of the previous games, it's still a pretty good as an overall package. Still, I really dislike the motion controls and I think it's going to age the game and probably cause a lot of people from never experiencing the game at all. I mean, the Wind Waker HD and Twlight Princess HD can always be ported to future consoles, but Skyward Sword will always be stuck on the Wii, unless Nintendo goes out of it's way to port the game forward by changing the controls. Maybe people will look back on Skyward Sword in a better light, but I feel like it's more likely newer Zelda fans will never end up playing it at all, since the Wii Motion Plus technology is so integral to the experience, and may cause the game to never be ported in the future.
      For the DS, I heard Spirit Tracks was a much better improvement on Phantom Hourglass, but I've honestly never even tried to play it after playing Phantom Hourglass. If I'm being honest, Phantom Hourglass might be one of the worst Zelda games I've ever played! It was so bad I couldn't even complete it. I suppose if you haven't played it, it's kind of hard to understand the context and the frustration I felt during the time, but Phantom Hourglass's repeatable dungeon mechanic was legitimately terrible, and as bad as Skyward Sword could be at time, I still can replay the game and get something out of it. On the other hand, I have almost no intentions of revisiting Phantom Hourglass at all and I may try out Spirit Tracks eventually.

      @@HyperCharge I appreciate your thoughts on this. In my opinion Twilight Princess is the weakest of the modern entries. I replayed it when he HD version came out and was reassured that it wasn't quite on the same level as the others. Wind Waker wasn't that much better actually, but what elevated it were the unique setting and aesthetics, and the HD version actually took it from great to really, truly great. One of the only examples I know of where a remaster took a game to another level.
      Skyward Sword, not having the benefit of having been given a second shot so far, stands above both of the GC games mostly for its high-quality dungeons, which I suspect will be the thing that people someday will be saying was the most overlooked thing about it, the engaging combat (yes, it was broken, but not to the extent where it ruined the experience) and the best stab at a story with well-developed characters in a Zelda game to date. That last thing is actually something Skyward Sword has in common with Spirit Tracks, which has arguably the best Zelda character (though not many others in that game stand out, to be honest).
      Skyward Sword has been heavily criticised for not doing anything really new for the series, but it's less of an Ocarina of Time clone than Twilight Princess or Wind Waker. It's also not necessarily more frustrating and tedious than those (not counting some of the issues fixed on Wii U). I can understand people having favourites, but the passion with which some fans hate Skyward Sword is just irrational when contrasted with the love they show for something like Wind Waker, which really isn't all that different in terms of core mechanics, series tropes and presentation. Twilight Princess gets a lot of praise for its dungeons. Replay Skyward Sword and focus on that aspect. I'd be surprised if anyone came out of that saying it wasn't the stronger game in that category.
      I am currently replaying Breath of the Wild and looking to get all the shrines this time so I can obtain the green tunic. It's amazing how much that game makes what amounts to chores feel engaging even after a hundred hours. But it lacks something that Skyward Sword had a lot of; a certain Zelda magic that makes it feel like it may have broken with too many traditions. I'm glad it has, it was necessary at this point. If Breath of the Wild was the antithesis to the OOT formula, let's hope there's a synthesis in its successor that gives us the best of both worlds. Skyward Sword will be more fondly remembered when everyone gets over the honeymoon phase with the new formula.
      Oh, and by the way: I think the Switch is perfect for a Skyward Sword remaster. The joy-cons are more precise than Wii remotes ever were. With a few tweaks the game could have a second life people didn't consider possible. We'll see what happens.

    Wow buddy! you went from reviewing Zelda to whining in a matter of minutes. The cussing and the amount of times you shout idiot like it's going out of style gets out of hand and you get off topic so much near the end that it became hard to watch. I mean this is a retrospective or a rant? Chansey odds if you ask me. With all that being said I did over all enjoy your video however I don't know if I'll be watching anymore of them. In closing I suppose you deserve at least a good job.

    • @HyperCharge
      @HyperCharge  7 років тому +5

      Well, it's a little mix of both. A retrospective is essentially a showcase of a particular work overtime, so by definition, this video falls under that. I try to give a good mix between information and my personal opinions, which does usually involve rants at some points, so you could say that this video is a retrospective told through a rant; which is kind of weird hybrid when you think about it.
      Really, the goal of this video (and this entire series of videos) is to give just enough information to help explain some of my rants so they would make sense to someone who had no prior knowledge of the series. It's a style that I really enjoy, but it does alienate people who don't find it entertaining, which is perfectly fine. I like to rant and give my opinions (whether their positive or negative), but I also like to explain myself, which is why I sometimes like to present information more formally.
      At the end of the day, any dipshit can go on wikipedia and tell you that The Legend of Zelda was released in 1986 on the NES. There is already an overabundance of these kinds of videos on UA-cam, which is why I really like this particular style. My videos are a bit dumb, their a bit off topic from time to time, but they are pretty unique and mesh well with my blunt and aggressive humor.

    Also Twilight Princess is not Ocarina of Time again. It's a very different game with a very different style and many different gameplay elements and a very different story. Just because it has an updated OOT aesthetic does not mean that it's Ocarina of Time again. I hate when people incorrectly make that statement because it devalues what is one of the greatest Zelda games and a high quality meaningful and worthwhile experience in the Zelda Chronology. It is a very different game from Ocarina of Time and anyone who claims it is just Ocarina of Time 2, or that it doesn't have just as much uniqueness to it as the other Zelda games are lying through their teeth. Whether you enjoy those things or not it is still the truth that Twilight Princess is not an Ocarina of Time copycat because it has many gameplay mechanics that are different/expanded upon AND a very different story, and tone. I know that you praise it as a great game, but the fact you make that comment at all (even if not in disparaging) is a flat out lie.
    Also, no, the game does not shove dark imagery down your throat and expect you to take it seriously. Of course you'd use the one part of the game that is a little bit try hard (The Ilia face scene) to make that argument. Sorry, but everything else is natural darkness and feels natural and is fitting for Zelda. Just because the more mature elements came about because of the unjust backlash to Windwaker does not mean that they are try hard, unfitting, or shoved in your face. It IS a mature Zelda game and there's nothing wrong with that.

      Yeah, I suppose it's like that, but in terms of a retrospective, all I'm really doing is highlighting the way the series changed with each game, while also interjecting my own opinions. It's not really professional or unbiased, but it is a text-book definition of a retrospective. For the video, I highlight the mechanical changes of each game and explained why I liked/disliked the game because of it. I suppose most retrospectives don't interject their own opinions too much, but besides that, it does work as one.

    I agree with most of your analysis but I really don't care for the "open world, you choose where to go first" mechanic. I much prefer rhe progressive nature of Link's Awakening. It's my favorite gane in the series and I just loved how new areas were unlocked from old areas. Backtracking is one thing but going back to a familiar area with a new item that allows you to expand that old area always felt like a cool accomplishment for me. Like "oh, it looks like I can get something cool over there but Idk how tf to get there." Then later on you get and item and you go "ohhh yeahhh, now I coukd probably use this to get to that one place!" Idk.
    And I am really not a fan of Breath of the Wild. The 4 beast dungeons were bland and forgettable. The shrines were tedious and overall felt like a grind. Breaking weapons was pure cancer. And the climbing and stamina mechanic was not a fun addition to the game, imo. Neither were the bloodmoons. I want to feel like a powerful badass at some point, not like I am taking three steps forward and then 2 steps back. I felt like this game was just trying to be Skyrim for kids and it felt like pandering instead of being itself.

    It seems like you are pointing out all the bad in Skyward Sword while ignoring all the good. Sure, I agree that the game is very linear, the sky is empty, etc. However, you're also overlooking the dungeons. The dungeons in this game are really great, like the time traveling Sandship and the layout shifting Sky Keep, and there are also great puzzles in the overworld. The whole concept of timeshift stones is really interesting. Also, even though you go back to the same areas, you never do the same thing aside from returning to Skyview Temple and the Imprisoned fights. You always go to a new area each visit, or the entire region changes like Faron Woods being flooded
