20:44 ”Are we eventually just going to end up with a Super Smash Bros. Game with a massive 120 character roster with 25 sword characters with a Down-B counter attack?” At this rate, yes.
He said that no one wanted the 3DS version, yet it outsold the Wii U version by quite the marging, more than enough than to simply say that "The Wii U players only bought it because it came out first." I'm sure plenty of people only own the 3DS version as well, showing that the 3DS was wanted as well, because of portability.
I'm sure a lot of people enjoy the portability, but it's clearly the inferior version of the game. I'm not surprised that it sold more, because Nintendo completely threw the Wii U version under the bus for more sales. People ended up buying both versions instead of just buying the Wii U version, some people bought the 3DS version and never decided to follow up with the Wii U version, and I'm sure a majority of people just played it on 3DS. Most people who got the 3DS version just settled for the worst version because it came out earlier and never followed up on buying the real game.
It would be interesting to see what the sales would have been like had they released them both side by side, but I think Nintendo had already given up on the Wii U at this point and just pushed the 3DS to get the most software sales.
HyperCharge kinda sucked when I couldn't afford a Wii U so I just got the 3DS version, but I'm glad to hear the better one didn't have much content either lmao
6:44 and 7:18 as soon as i saw the ssbu video from today i immediately thought of this video and how funny it was that we all thought that king k rool was a joke little did we know
This video made me realize just how casual I really am. Smash is the only fighting game I like, and even then I only play single player and occasionally online. I only own the 3DS version, and have never really had any interest in the WiiU version. I tried Skullgirls and Street Fighter once before giving up on the entire genre because I can't even do a hadouken much less begin to understand any of the mechanics in any of those games.
Note, when you make the box make sure that you can get out through the bottom. It really opens up opportunities both offensively and defensively. Also try to make it high enough so that Ike's final smash isn't unfair.
They should make a spinoff Pokémon fighting game with the smash bros system or a very similar variant. All pokemon games are literally turn based despite everyone wanting to actually see them fight for real. SSB gives you that with a few pokemon, but since they've basically hit a ceiling with improving the main series they should do it for all pokemon. Pokémon have about as many attacks as a smash character, tons of characters to play, to unlock, they can evolve and evolved pokemon would be like insane compared to a regular one. Like getting to be Gigabowser or some shit. The game would write itself. I don't even play pokemon except I did get Pokémon Stadium 2 to fight the pokemon. When I found out it was turn based I was enraged. No actual fighting pokemon, just back and forth attacks and oh no my pokemon fell asleep oh no my water type is weak against his air type or whatever but its my turn so I can take all the time to think that I want despite being in the middle of a fight. Fuck no. Real pokemon fighting + smash combat system = profit
I see Smash games the same way I see chess: easy to learn but difficult to master. Once you understand the goal of the game and how the pieces move, you can start playing chess. You don't need to learn advanced moves like castling or en passant to have a good time, but they can improve your game and maybe catch your opponent off guard if you're just playing casually. For those who want to take their game to the next level, there's still so much more to learn (even though it's all ultimately based off of a simple, fairly limited moveset of just six pieces). Positioning, pattern recognition, mind games, it's all there. Traditional fighting games I see more the way I see shogi: difficult to learn and even more difficult to master. Understanding the goal of the game is simple enough, but there's so much to shogi that without a greater knowledge of how the pieces move and what roles they play, you can't do much more than flail around and hope something works. Like chess, there are advanced moves that aren't required learning but will improve your game. But it's a lot more difficult to play casually since things like positioning, pattern recognition, etc. is necessary knowledge if you play anyone who isn't way below your level. I feel like those who call Smash "not a real fighting game" must see the series like checkers: easy to learn and not a lot to it. Simple idea, simple moveset, simple "advanced" moves, and no requirement to learn things like positioning, pattern recognition or mind games since it's little more than a glorified game of tic-tac-toe. Sure, the later stages of checkers can involve a bit more strategy, but nothing like what you'd see in even low-level shogi games. I've played several Smash games and played/watched some traditional fighting games like Soul Calibur 2 (great game btw), Street Fighter, and the like. While I much prefer Smash, I can really see why people like the other. I can also see why those who know traditional fighting games would say Smash isn't a fighting game, but I think that's very close-minded. Using one type of game to define an entire genre, and excluding anything that doesn't perfectly fit that mold, is like saying "Any racing game that doesn't use real cars isn't a real racing game." Tell that to Mario Kart players or fans of F-Zero.
I really like the idea of Hyper Smash, "a real" fighting game with Smash bros roster, but it wouldn't make sense. Smash bros fighting style is one of the facts that makes the series unique, the other one being characters from Nintendo and guest stars. Ripping off the core of the game would make the series just like the others fighting game, just with a different cast. Great video by the way! i hope you get the recognition you deserve because you're such a good youtuber
I need to play the Wii version more someday. I played it once and it felt really weird honestly and maybe it's because it was post high school for me and like you I'd be cranking SF, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear, and much more. The novelty was different.
I mean, I was like 6 years old when Melee came out, so I never really dived into the competitive scene at that age. I might have gone into playing it more competitively if I was super into the game back in the day, but I never really had a lot of friends who pushed me to play better. Going back to the game as a adult really got me to understand how much more fun Melee is compared to Brawl and Smash 4. Even with the footage I recorded, it was fun to just pop into training mode and practice a couple of combos with Marth and Falco and see what I could pull off. I'm mostly talking about Smash 4 specifically in the video, but it also applies to Melee too. It was probably more exciting to play the game competitively in the past, since the meta was constantly changing and being improved, but now everything's already been solved, and nothing is really evolving anymore. The top tier characters in the game dominate the entire game with half of the roster not even being viable options. It's not even that half the roster are unpopular choices, they're just objectively shit characters when you incorporate all of the technical stuff going on in the background. The game has such an absurd game balance that playing the top tier characters is pretty much required now, with only a few great players being able to play some of the lower tiered characters like Ganondorf. I think the biggest turn off for me personally is how much tech is required to even play at a competitive level. Super Smash Bros Melee is easy to learn, but it's incredibly hard to master in an almost obnoxious way. Just the concept of L-Canceling my moves makes me never want to jump into the game at a competitive level, but I would basically have to master it in order to even be on par with everyone else. It cuts your landing animations in half, which exponentially increasing your combo potential, making it an absolute required skill to master. I would compare this to having to learn 1-frame links in Street Fighter 4, which I also hate with the fucking passion. It takes a lot of technical skill to be able to pull 1-frame links off, but it shouldn't be required to pull off an extremely basic 5 punch combo. A lot of the technical aspects of Super Smash Bros Melee are needlessly complicated for how simple the game actually is, but the only reason it's like that is because it was never intended to be played at a competitive level. Like I said in the video, the main mechanic of Super Smash Bros is attacking, blocking, or grabbing, which is the mind game that drives the meta. It's an extremely simple mind game, but since your doing extremely fast combos, it pushes it to the limits. Smash 4 has the same thing going for it, but it's actually a lot slower, which gives you more time to think and react to, making it less fun to play. I totally get the appeal of the games, but it's just not my thing. Overall, Melee is a lot more fun, but the extreme balance problems and technical skill required to even be considered competitive kind of just kill it for me, but this is coming from a person who couldn't even care less about the competitive scene.
HyperCharge thanks for the in-depth response! I definitely understand your gripe with melee having a needlessly high technical barrier-to-entry. I would, however, add that the simple rock-paper-scissors element of smash becomes a lot more interesting when you consider the positional advantages and movement that shape most of the 'neutral game' that smash has. but tbh smash has a lot of crap in it that we put up with because we like the game-- like you mentioned, the roster isn't balanced at all. I've dipped my toe into street fighter as well and I would say that the mind game seems the same in concept but is more complex and nuanced in 'real' fighters due to obviously being developed for a competitive audience. There's less opportunities to cheese your opponent, basically (whether it's by using weird unpredictable movement or excessive techskill). thanks for your response! one of the most detailed statements on smash I've seen from a more traditional fgc player.
Well I can't even talk about the neutral game at a professional level since I just haven't gotten too deep into Smash, but what I can say is that I enjoy the neutral game to Skullgirls a lot more. The best thing about Skullgirls specifically is that is has a ton of more tech and options you can perform with every character. You have the simple mind game of attacking, blocking, or grabbing, but it also has a ton of other character specific options on top that make it more complex. The only way to grab someone is Melee is to run up to them and press the Z button, which you can only do on the ground. Grabbing someone in Skullgirls is a lot more complicated, and there are a ton of defensive and offensive situations that allow you to get a grab or avoid a grab. You can grab someone on the ground, but you can also grab someone in the air, you can grab someone using character specific command grabs, and you can tech off someones grab by pressing grab at the same time (basically both players press grab and nothing happens). Melee is pretty exciting because your basically playing 50 games of rock paper scissors in 10 seconds. In Skullgirls, your playing rock paper scissors way less, but you also have 3-4 different pairs of scissors that beat and lose against 3-4 different kinds of rocks and paper.
I think you summed up the quantity/speed vs complexity of the mind game in melee compared to other fighters perfectly. a lot of the time I will go to play street fighter when I get frustrated with melee because it feels like I actually have the ability to assess each situation and pick an option in response that I feel like I chose for a reason (even if I pick the wrong one), whereas in melee sometimes if you just do dumb stuff like run in and upsmash it can work for almost no reason (edit: at least from my perspective as a pretty bad player who has played a significant amount).
why arent u more popular though!! u make the funniest videos. i'm just sayin' you deserve a lot of recognition for the videos u put out bc they're honestly so well edited and good!
@@thejonbrownshow8470 First one is from Brawl. I don't remember what it's called but it plays during one of the story mode stages. Second one is from Smash 4. Maybe an Earthbound stage? Idk, I've never played Smash 4. But he tends to use music from the game he's showing onscreen at the time (with a few exceptions such as the Malo Mart theme from Twilight Princess).
I always thought it was because of the 3DS, but I think the inclusion of 8 player smash was another reason to cut them too. If the 3DS wasn't handicapping them, I can imagine having 8 Ice Climbers in an 8 player smash would cause just as much problems
Love the video, but the Wii U game is so much worse than the 3ds game if you ask me. The Wii U version has no single player content (at least 3ds had Smash Run) and the Wii U version has essentially nothing worth revisiting now that Ultimate is out.
It has events, both single player and multiplayer. In my opinion, events are way better than spirit battles because they told told stories and had way more variety. Along with that, the classic mode is different and is pretty much randomized and different each time. Smash 4 has All Star mode and the trophies, which are way more fun to collect than spirits! Don’t forget master orders and crazy orders! Those were neat original modes. However, yeah, Ultimate is a much more convenient game to play with way more customization and variety than 4! But playing Ultimate with friends is risky for me because I worry that my Joy-Cons will break every time I play with them...
Eh. Yeah. World of Light was pretty lame, especially compared to the adventure modes in Brawl and Melee. Ultimate had classic mode too, but that’s a given with any Smash game. Ultimate removed events and all star mode and it also removed master orders, crazy orders, and smash run, which were introduced in the previous game.
Pre-release I was led to believe that World of Light would be comparable to Subspace Emissary. Which is a ridiculous claim since WoL doesn't even measure up to Melee's Adventure Mode. I can't tell which way to go to progress, what little story there is is lame, the whole sticker system sucks, the overworld design is just bad. It's actually more like Melee's All Star Mode than anything.
Dude once again you're over here with my exact opinions on a favorite game series. Like yeah, they shouldn't have booted Mewtwo for Lucario, I said that too! Yeah, Melee was epic, because of the GameCube, and I only play stock! Like...yeah! The Wii sucks, fuck it! And they should never get RID of anything cool, to be replaced with dumb gimmicks. We could have been friends if paths crossed!!!
I bought the 3ds version because I ain't buying a WiiU, considering I would only have purchased it for Smash, but with the 3ds I could also play Pokemon and uhhh.... idk i really like pokemon
I feel like a majority of the people who only bought the 3DS version kind of just settled for that reason. Most people already had the 3DS, it came out a couple of months earlier, and they didn't really care about having the next gen experience. I probably should have explained myself better when I was talking about how no one wanted the 3DS version. Before the Wii U and 3DS versions were announced, I can't imagine people saying that they want the next Super Smash Bros game to be in 240p with worse controls, you know what I mean? Most people just got the 3DS version out of convenience rather than the quality.
Actually, I think 3DS is the best version of Smash 4. Portability and no smash tour makes it for me. Also, it doesn't need as much bandwidth to work fine online. I used to play it on a 30mb conection and it was mostly fine. But Wii U with the same connection was total crap. Edit: oh and gotta love those pixel art stages!
Yeah, totally surprised by that! I think the concept of bringing back all the old characters to make an ultimate version was really smart for building off of the Wii U version.
I feel once Sakurai dies or not get involved in Smash, it will be a marketing ploit instead of an actual game. We won't get a roster like Ultimate again and I can see third parties even Disney use Smash Bros to promote their own series. It's only a matter of time until shit like Fortnite or Mikey Mouse get in. I think they are more likely than Goku. But Toei are lazy money hungry company who make shit like Dragon Ball Super so who tf knows. So far Brawl is the most boring of the Smash games I have seen so far. It's music sucks because you heard it a billion times. Its way too annoying to control in platformer section so half the appeal of the game "story mode" sucks. And tripping ruins even casual games. Also Lucario replacing Mewtwo pisses me off. And the demos for classic games are a joke. You can't even grasp enough of the games to say "I wish I could play this all day". There is lots of content but they are shit. The only good thing is the model quality but did they really need to make Mario's outfit as detailed as my own jeans?
Just like how you don't bother playing anything but stock, don't make any other series than this. We need more of these and the rest of your series kinda suck
What's makes these videos more enjoyable than my other series? It's not like I'm surprised or anything, because I spend way more time making these videos, but I'm just genuinely curious.
@@HyperCharge I love your Nintendrone videos. I grew up a Nintendo kid so I like it cuz I relate of to it. But I guess not everyone can. So when they see you talking about how great the gamecube is they never got to experience it so to them it doesn't land as hard...maybe that? Idk great work man
the swearing in this is so forced and comes across as a rip-off of avgn. Also using a swear as an adjective again and again like "melee brought the fucking hype, they just took the game and cranked it up to fucking 11" that's redundant and it seem like the swearing is meant to be funny

Watching this after Steve from Minecraft was announced as Fighter #77 in Super Smash Bros Ultimate Fighter Pass 2
The 3DS version outsold the Wii U version by, like, 4 millions.
DarkK~ the 3ds outsold the wiiu by like, 47 million units.

I play time mode in Smash. Played that mode since I started playing Smash when I was 7.

why arent u more popular though!! u make the funniest videos. i'm just sayin' you deserve a lot of recognition for the videos u put out bc they're honestly so well edited and good!
I love ur videos lmao never laughed so much
You got so wrong in the last 2 minutes of the video but I would LOVE if you did a video on Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
I think a traditional smash fighting game would be great. Then they will take the glory that mvc2 had and run with it.
fucking hurts to watch him say "SNAKE WILL NEVER BE BACK IN SMASH", fucking wait for Smash ultimate boiiii
AyYo Hypergauge! Bowser sucked so HARD when he premiered in Melee! You could make a rise of the king video about Bowser! It would be hilarious!
i main inkling girl in smash 5.
Cloudboy Shut up future man
Inkling is fire in smash for switch.
Take a sip Everytime he says fucking.
18:42 If you couldn't win an online match after 100 hours you are bad my dude
Haha! Whenever I play and it's on time mode everyone is just like, "Crap...we forgot to put stock back on!"
It's the ceremonial way to start playing Super Smash Bros
Lol I got the Wii U version before the 3DS version
16:25 what's the bgm here as you go to the set of points here lol
And I guess 19:24 I love these tracks, it's annoying I just don't know their titles lol
Just give us Waluigi, he’s the new Cloud
@20:47 that image is beautiful. made me lol so hard
Ice Climbers didn't work on 3DS so they got cut entirely
I always thought it was because of the 3DS, but I think the inclusion of 8 player smash was another reason to cut them too. If the 3DS wasn't handicapping them, I can imagine having 8 Ice Climbers in an 8 player smash would cause just as much problems
i still play the 3ds version
I like the first Smash Bros. the most in terms of speed
what are your thoughts for the switch mario games?
It looks great so far! I'm excited to try it out whenever it comes out. Not much else to say right now
HyperCharge it looks really weird but that could be a good thing
21:31 gurren lagann reference?
Smash ultimate solo content is scarce. You got World of light, and that's it. I'm so disappointed. :c
Eh.
Hehehe he says bad words! That means he’s funny! He’s says a bunch of funny bad words! Hahaha! Fuck!
Another Retrospective to end the day. Thanks for the upload Sam! c:
21:31 fucking lost it at Waldo and Professor Oak
HYPER FUCKING SMASH BROS
Great vid but i got triggered when you said that Melee wasn't a real fighting game...
Maybe if you played a real fighting game you wouldn't get triggered....I'M JUST JOKING!
When you call breaking a game competitive
Ersan it doesn’t matter if it’s an exploit point is it made melee the most competitive
Hahaha Snake is back in smash for the switch HyperCharge !!!
Yeah, totally surprised by that! I think the concept of bringing back all the old characters to make an ultimate version was really smart for building off of the Wii U version.
Ayyyy
You're funny af!
Subbed.
Hyper super smash bros switch
20:56 didn’t age well
Only people age. Don't be an idiot
Mau Pr shut up smelly bitch
No, they should make Melee HD
I actually prefer time mode
We want ZELDA
I play on Time well time to start using stocks. =)
20:12 - 20:18 black thuggery and shows a black guy as an example, uh okay that doesn't imply anything
I'm sorry but if you only play stock you aren't a real American or smash player.
That gamecube controller line is kinda bs. Why tf would I wanna use that aborted xbox controller?
