  • What if one of the most important pieces of Zelda lore was hidden in plain sight - something in circulation for over a decade, something you might even have in your home right now? Missing Pieces explores the theory of the Hyrule Map, the unassuming depiction of Hyrule that has masqueraded in plain view as merchandise from Puzzles to Posters, marketed with: “Explore the wild vastness of Hyrule with this collectible and beautifully detailed jigsaw puzzle styled as a map of Hyrule featuring locations from multiple classic Legend of Zelda games from Nintendo”. But what if there’s more behind this map than a simple piece of merchandise and wht's so significant in relevance to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Join me as we celebrate our 2-year anniversary of GameSmiths with a theory guaranteed to tread new territory.

    The odd placemat of Kakariko Village and Lost Woods is explained by game development. I think some of the producers have said that they swapped places very late in BOTW's development. Probability because the game tells you to go to Impa at Kakariko Village and if it was at the original point it would be really difficult for new players to go there because the journey is full of guardians outside Hyrule Town.

      IMO it’s because Zelda has always been a volatile franchise, changing art styles and mechanics with every entry. Though they normally keep just enough consistency that it feels like the same franchise. And when they remove or change something that fans don’t like you can typically see them try to rectify it in the next game.
      TPs seriousness in response to the backlash about WWs art style, SS and the timeline in general to acknowledge popular fan theories, BotWs openness in response to SSs linearity, TotKs revamped dungeons and building system in response to both criticisms of and popular ways to play BotW. The list goes on and on.
      Most game franchises nowadays make a generic RPG slap an iconic song, logo, word, etc onto it and call it a day.

    Could the map have been an early reference point for BotW's development along with the extra content that would go on to be TotK? If that theory holds water, the Castor Wilds inclusion could have been due to the fact the Minish were originally going to be in BotW before being cut

    • @gamesmiths
      @gamesmiths  10 місяців тому +22

      Indeed that’s my suggestion in terms of the plans for BOTW development which I think then extended to TOTK to realise the full vision of the skies and caves being too much in one iteration. Aonuma explains his disappointment at not achieving the vision for the skies for Skyward Sword in the “making of BOTW” series, so it adds more context for the mindset. Your point about the Minish is bang on, ironically featuring in the same series with Fujibayashi lamenting the decision. I had considered including this but I cut the initial script of 58 mins down to get this finalised, so that part was cut from this video. It’s a great call-out and I’d add the location of the memory near death mountain, where link and Zelda talk about the increasing monster threat atop a pile of defeated Lynels with blood moon music is significant to both titles and overlooks the “Minshi Woods” and “Picor Pond” - and is also the chasm entry point in TOTK to get to the Lost woods - critical story aspect and riffs the Minish references to a fault. Love your work 💚💫

    IMAGINE a dlc where after the events of totk, a strange sound is heard from the lost woods. You are being guided by this voice to a huge log tunnel where the further you walk, it begins to warp and twist. Suddenly you see a large hole but without the gloom, and decide to jump down. When you fall, you see the rainbowlike colours of different masks and you hit the ground. You travel further into the depths where you hear a faint sound of a soothing piano, and the creaking of a wooden cog turning slowly. You see stairs and walk up to a large door, and just when you are about to open it, you hear a eerie voice from behind: " You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?"👹

      I read some old interview long time ago, many years, where somebody suggested that Happy Mask Salesman is a parody of somebody on the staff, with a similar backstory as the Boo ghosts, sometimes flipping out at the developers. I think they mentioned a name I didn't recognize, so it never stuck with me who that was supposed to be, maybe Miyamoto or Koizumi.
      But doesn't he even look JUST like Fujibayashi? Funny thing is, that would be a year before his involvement in Zelda franchise starting 2001. But he was a director working across company borders, so he would be knwon as somebody who's a bit of an outsider like the way HMS is detached from both Link and Termina.

      Honestly I think that's a bad idea, as cool as it would be to see. Termina has too much thematic and symbolic importance to just put in a DLC. Majora's Mask told a mostly self-contained story, and I think revisiting it would only be a mistake. Besides, I'd personally rather see something newer and more fitting for Tears of the Kingdom.

    What I'm wondering is if the pieces of land torn from the surface during the Upheaval will ever settle back to the ground -- and if so, will they all go back where they originally came from? What if there have been previous Upheavals in Hyrule's history, and sometimes the land masses shift around in the sky before falling back down? That would be one way to explain how some pieces of the map stay fairly consistent, while others seem to move around randomly.
    (It also just hit me that the Upheaval represents the other kind of "tears" (as in torn apart) of the Kingdom. 😆)

      The sky islands do not originate from botws hyrule, but have been sitting in the skies above for hundreds of thousands of years ever since mineru and zelda together somehow got them up there somewhere between the imprisoning war and zeldas draconofication. Hyrule castle is the only thing that rose up, and most likely triggered the islands to start floating further down. They were not visible in botw because they were above a huge cloud barrier, which the light dragon breaks apart after you give the master sword to zelda behind the temple of time

      @@Flashy675 Not sure if I entirely buy that theory myself, but I do think it's likely we have seen parts of "The Depths" before in other titles. I do think that for some undisclosed reason, the Windwaker timeline merged and drained, leading to both rock salt everywhere and the Rito now existing alongside the zora. As a quick aside, my favorite solution to the Song of Storms is pretty simple: at some time before the paradox, Link was asked by Guru-Guru to play his song with him, and his magical ocarina made it start to rain.
    Somewhat similarly, the idea that BotW/TotK takes place after everything as a new beginning that acknowledges the past without adhering itself to it is great. Sure, there's a little bit of mental gymnastics in regards to figuring out if the Ooccoo turned into the Zonai, or why Hylia as a goddess has seen a resurgence after likely millennia of no one talking about her, but at this point in the timeline that's literally arguing over caveman sociology for how much temporal distance it has in regards to affecting the games and their story. Brush down the slate, still have a bit of those leftover markings there, continue from sense, a-okay.

    Speaking of the Song of Storms paradox, I think it's possible the original child the man in the windmill is referring to is Link after he returns from Termina. I'm basing this solely off of the fact that the composer brothers of Ikana Canyon originally came up with the song and we see Link learning it there and finishing his adventure in Termina and returning to Hyrule still a child. My idea is he came back and caused the psychological damage to the windmill guy with the song and thus, adult Link in OoT was able to learn it and then go back in time to become the child who taught it to the windmill guy. However, in order for Link to have been able to venture to Termina, he needed to know the song in the first place anyways so he could complete his adventure in Hyrule, so take the idea with a grain of salt.
    Alternatively, I think the song could just be fated to exist in the first place no matter where it came from. As if it is self-aware and choosing from where it originates, no matter what timeline. Where is Fox Mulder when you need him?

    For those who are curious or want to debate, I'm pretty sure that temple in the desert is the Temple of Time. Its architecture is literally one-to-one. And I think the structure in the top left is supposed to be the Tower of Hera, but I could be wrong about that. The village with the waterwheel is clearly Ordon, due to it being south of Faron Woods. One thing that I'm particularly curious about is the snowy village to the northeast. It never snows in Akkala, which is the region where the village seems to be located in. We can't say that it's Hebra due to the Hebra mountains being present in the northwest of the map. It's a very curious location.
    Moving on to the life forms on the map, the Stalchild is likely a reference to how Stalchildren appear in Hyrule Field at night in OoT. The scorpion might be a reference to Moldarach from Skyward Sword. The Link-like figure by the Great Deku Tree is likely just representing the Kokiri, but it might also be the Hero of Time himself. The two major mysteries for me are the dragon on the central mountain peak and the fish-like tail in Faron Woods. The dragon has wings, unlike the Draconified dragons from BotW and TotK, but it isn't a Gleeok due to it not having three or more heads. It also can't be an Aquamentus because those particular dragons have only one horn. The closest I can come to a conclusion is Valoo. As for the fishy tail, it could be in reference to the Water Dragon Faron, but I'm not sure on that.
    And if you've read all this, then I applaud you for being like me and having no life. Have a good day.

      Consider me lifeless - read it, loved it. Another one with the boy near the Deku Tree - I think the Hero of Time is a great reference but also reminds me of the boy from ALTTP in the surrounded woods. Just has that vibe. Dragon wise Argorok springs to mind and Moldarach in the desert would team nicely with the SS references. Same with the water dragon. Nicely done sir, and love the discussion 💚💫

    Perhaps BOTW was originally meant to literally unite the timelines and they decided to push that back to a later game. It seems very intentional to include features from previous games in the puzzle map, and they may have decided they had too much material to put into two games (especially considering exactly how much there is to both games already).
    It would be very interesting to me if this became a trilogy but it seems unlikely

      Thanks for the comment. I can only suggest that I don’t expect that to be the case. My interpretation so far is more a launching point for taking those stories into a different iteration or dimension. One where the existing history remains but indeed can be iterated differently in a new cycle. Similar to how each day you begin by waking, cohesive to all days prior but your day plays out differently as a result of the events transpiring from the day prior. Maybe you go to work like always but events never play out the same. Probably not the best explanation but I’d like to think Nintendo are actively engaging the past to open up the possibilities of moving the series forward but retaining those stories to revisit or possibly reiterate without retcon. Just my view of course, but it’s a possibility that covers all bases, it’s what I would do in their position 💚💫

    We know the version we see of the Song of Storms loop, but if you unwind it backwards, it's possible that a version of Link simply played the song that the windmill guy was playing, since he plays that same song even before Link plays it to him. This causes him to get mad, so adult Link gets the song before he goes back in time, changing the reason (and likely the timing) of young Link playing the song to him.
    It goes around, goes around, like a windmill, but a windmill starts somewhere when it's built.
    This wouldn't be a real paradox, because time has no reason to care about consistency. Matter is effected by physics at every point. That's all that matters. This world's physics happens to include magic. Nayru created the laws of the realm, what the rules of this world's physics would be. It only makes sense for the universe would carry these out _blindly._
    The fact that multiple timelines were created by the time travel in OoT proves this.

    • @gamesmiths
      @gamesmiths  10 місяців тому +2

      Interesting. Being fair, paradox is an oversimplification of a much more complicated discussion but I’m never likely to please everyone with terminology decisions so although I can say definitively I know bringing up this topic is a minefield where I won’t be able to phrase it to please all, I certainly appreciate your perspective and largely agree with you. Albeit what I consider to be the multi dimensional aspects at play behind the iterative nature of the franchise v scientific endeavours compared to fictional world building I guess that’s my reference in terms of the statement about interpretation. What is really the great thing is heading these opinions and understanding how others view the matter. I enjoyed this perspective, particularly the consideration of how it began with when the windmill was built. I don’t disagree. But that was the point - not to debate the point of beginning but to appreciate the iteration of it from one perspective to another. However, that line - it starts where it’s built - chefs kiss - loved it 💚💫

      The reason the Windmill guy and song of storms in OOT is known as a bootstrap paradox is because if Link never learns the SOS from windmill guy, he can never play the song to the man which is then the cause for him originally learning it. This is the literal definition of a bootstrap paradox or causal loop. The information creates itself out of necessity.
      We can take it further in that we know SOS doesn't originate in Hyrule, the Hyrulean Sharp brother composed the songs of the sun and moon which became one song, the sun's song, their graves are found on either side of the royal tomb in Kakariko.
      SOS was created by the Terminian Sharp brothers in Ikana. Link can only learn that if he survives the events of OOT, which to do so he has to complete the shadow temple, to do that he needs to get through the bottom of the well, to do that he needs SOS. So, the song does exist but Link learns it out of time, again, due to the paradox necessitating it to be so.

    • @thajocoth
      @thajocoth 9 місяців тому +2

      @@CC-df3pn The Bootstrap Paradox isn't really a paradox at all. A thing can originate from a prior iteration of said universe. With multiple trips through time, it can land on a version that fully obscures where something originated the first time. This is especially true in multiverses that branch off new timelines when time travel occurs, which we know the Zelda multiverse does.
      Also, the windmill guy plays the same exact song BEFORE Link ever plays it to empty the well. Every time you enter the windmill, including the first time you ever visit Kakariko Village, he's playing the song.
      In Termina, it was composed by one of the Sharp brothers... But Romani & Malon managed to have the same song for different reasons. I see no reason the Song of Storms in Hyrule couldn't've been originally composed by Hyrule's Sharp Brothers. That's not an uncommon trope for multiverses... Different versions of the same people creating the same things despite having different circumstances... They were still royal composers, after all. They composed the Sun's Song.

    • @CC-df3pn
      @CC-df3pn 9 місяців тому +1

      @@thajocoth again, it is the LITERAL DEFINITION of a bootstrap paradox. Yes the song plays as we enter the windmill, that is a limit of the original game. We are told directly that the song is first learned by the windmill guy, and played, by a boy with an ocarina which ruined the windmill.
      The canon overwrites the gameplay and system limitations of the original game.
      The canon also says that the Hyrulean Sharp brothers only composed the Sun's song not SOS. I know what you are trying to say but using the limits of the game in the face of what the game and all other media surrounding it state as the actual events and canon is reductive

    • @thajocoth
      @thajocoth 9 місяців тому +1

      @@CC-df3pn Assuming that all multiversal events in the series are shown to us, and that nothing else ever happens seems more like limiting yourself for no reason.
      They were royal composers. Why would they only compose one song in their entire lifespans? That makes no sense. I'd be surprised if they didn't also compose OoT's warp songs & Song of Time. The Sun's Song would be, like, their final song that they were in the middle of composing when they died, like their version of Beethoven's 10th symphony, which is why you can only get it in their crypt.
      We know that time travel in the Zelda multiverse creates alternate timelines. With all the time travel that occurs, we're only told about three of these timelines. It's super naive to think there wouldn't be more. These three are simply the timelines with games in them. Maybe the timeline that has a version of Link learning the song in a more straightforward way is simply otherwise uninteresting, so it has no games after that? Or maybe that time branch gets pruned from existence after it happens, which is more logically how time travel would really work if it was possible?
      There are so many gaps where things happen in the Zelda multiverse that we never see. I wouldn't assume that just because we only see the carpenters building Kakariko village and then trapped by the Gerudo that they immediately left for Gerudo Valley the moment Kakariko was done being built. Other things could've happened in their lives between those events that were simply not important to the story. We can't really know what those things were.
      Time travel paradoxes make certain assumptions about how time travel works (and those assumptions never actually make any logical sense). This is a multiverse in which we *know* how time travel works because we can see that it splits into separate timelines. Since it's not a causal loop universe (one in which time cannot be changed, so if you go back in time, you always went back in time), none of the traditional "time travel paradoxes" are valid in it, because there are now a billion different possible explanations that work to fill in the blanks. We can't know that any one of them is true unless Nintendo adds one of them to the series canon, but it doesn't matter which one is true because it's unimportant to the story. We have enough information to know that it's possible.
      It could easily be that if Link doesn't play the Song of Storms, and therefore doesn't get into the well to get the Lens of Truth, that after a while Link learns the song from another source at some point in the next few years (which could be in Hyrule or Termina, who knows?) Link then happens to play it in the Windmill. In this version of events, 7 years after child Link failed to enter the well, the guy is angry about the song being played, but it happened more recently than 7 years ago. This causes Link to learn the song earlier because of his time travel forward 7 years before. As a result, he can play the song sooner, getting into the well, and the guy's anger changes from "5 years ago" to "7 years ago" in the future. That's one of a million perfectly logical possibilities.
      It would make no sense from a narrative perspective to show us all that, and it's very clear that Nintendo cares more about narrative than canon consistency. There's no reason to show us the pieces that are irrelevant to the story.

A lot of people were criticizing the not existing tools from the old Zelda games, but for example what's better than a "Hook Shot", the Ascend function! And all the tools had disadvantages to them, that were eradicated in BotW and TotK! Back to the "Hook Shot"; you had to follow the level structures to be able to use it, for its time their tools were genius, but in an open world concept you can not use old paths! Since the Zonai are not present in any other games, it would make sense if there was a timeline split where the Zonai didn't come down (the other three timelines) v. Botw & Totk, where the Zonai did come down and contributed to Hyrule. That would wrap up how mummy Ganondorf being sealed under the castle for that long doesn't conflict with other Ganondorf's of the other timelines.

Interesting to note, and something I left out of the video so as not to overly elaborate, but different versions either feature or remove the World Atals banner from the bottom portion, depending on the source of the map. It's another fact that makes it more intriguing - underneath that banner is a reference to a peahat from OoT, but is covered when the banner is in place, that being the more common representation. Thought you might find that interesting as well noting the timelines mentioned and considered in respect of the dialect of Ancient Hylian Script - that being the more modern version from ALBW onwards, as opposed to the initial type from SS. 💚🌟

    i love this series so much. great video! I theorized something similar but SS, BOTW And TOTK all exist in another timeline (and the OG Timeline but). The Era of Myth is a alternate reality version of the older games. And ganondorf in the era of myth that is similar in our OG timeline (the n64 games and other games etc) all exist or may not exist. Like a dragon break but like you said, doesn't necessarily end.
    So BOTW and TOTK somehow exist possibly in a way that well never experience? But use what we know from SS, Era of Myth, BotW and TotK in the "Fujibiyoshi Parallel Timeline" to help answer the questions of the old OG Timeline.
    Or something completely different. Some people say that BotW and TotK are contradictory to each other.
    AND some people are saying the games are a ll one timeline.
    But the best part? All of us coming together to try to figure it out.

For my mind, I have my take on things, and that's certainly something I'm building on with the current run of theory videos and as part of what I've been exploring for some time. I really do believe the devs have a longer term plan in operation, and the more I delve into the lore and aspects, the more alignment I seem to find that suggests this is indeed where we are heading. That said, I'll be the first to say that I could be completely wrong, and it's my best interpretation based off what I'm finding, and sharing it with fellow fans is the best part of making these videos. To date, I'm convinced I've actually learned more about why Nintendo are approaching things the way they are - for me doing a theory is very much about putting up facts and observations, suggesting what I think it could mean, but ultimately leaving it up to you as the viewer to interpret and decide - it just makes sense to me as the best way to do things. I might have my own version, but I keep getting input from others I like more than my own take, so leaving things open to a collaborative discussion ensures I get to see things from so many different perspectives I never would have, and honestly I'm richer for it. It's a real privelage to do these videos and read comments like this, and thanks for being awesome, and being part of that discussion. I really like your take on it too, and to be honest, I have noticed a few things that could support that viewpoint as well. Expect me to touch on at least one of those in the next theory video or two, but suffice it to say, there's always been an open thread for me with Skyward Sword that raises a question about what I've deemed "The Forgotten Timeline" in my own theory notes, so I can totally see where you are coming from there. Whether that's the way the Big N goes is anyones guess, but it sure is fun to talk about. Have a great day, and thanks again 💚🌟

I was toying with the idea for a while about following up on this video purely based on the volume of random items it now seems to be associated with because I'm kinda intrigued as to who is making all this stuff - what's licensed v knock off...and get more behind how it's managed to proliferateso much. There's something about the sheer variety and weird randomness of it that has me more curious than when I went to make the video. Thanks for sharing this and blowing my mind. Having explored the depths a lot, it's interesting that the higher elevation=lower depths. Also, the walls of the depths end slightly before the overworlds edge. And every place there is water on the overworld there are walls in the depths, so I don't see leakages being a problem (Besides the hot springs I guess, but those get lava instead). I don't know what it means, and I'd love to see a small section of the map without gloom, roots, or any of that over time wear-down, that way we can see if it looks natural or not

    • @gamesmiths

      It’s a great observation and I’ve got a running theory on the depths planned for a future video post completion of my playthrough. One thing you might notice is how the landscape is completely wrought - almost like it’s had any richness long since drained as well as extensive mining operations. Both features connect extremely well with events surrounding the Lanayru region in Skyward Sword - lands once fertile undergone a desertification of sorts with the suggestion of time shift stones mining contributing to the environmental degradation. 💫💚

      I have a theory that the Depths are where the Underworld of Zelda NES was located. I mean, the statues in those dungeons kinda resemble Zonai statues, and there are rooms too dark to see without lighting a candle. Plus, it served as Ganon's lair and a hotspot for monsters. If nothing else, it feels like a reference to the NES Underworld.

Neither of the Links nor the windmill guy created the song as they heard it from each other but how did the song come into existence? That's the actual paradox.

    • @gamesmiths
      @gamesmiths  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comment/question GaryJuuce and I guess that's part of the larger mystery and depends on your take. For me, I continue to find more evidence of the games and lore being planned out well before most think, and the connections add to what I believe was a planned change or addition to the timelines published in Zelda Encyclopedia, but courses were changed I think based on the feedback from play-testing which identified that fans were having so much fun trying to understand where it fit that ultimately the devs decided to leave it more of a mystery and allow the fanbase to come to their own conclusions. Summarily for me though, there is definite threads from Skyward Sword through the major console releases (OoT, MM, TP, WW, Zelda 1 & 2) and what eventuates in BOTW and TOTK. What I do believe though is we have a cyclical iteration on what's happened in the past, meaning they exist in parralel to an extent, albeit within a different reality. It's a little tough for me to explain it and I'm breaking that down in the last video I released a few weeks ago and more on the way, but needless to say it's an interpretation that some might not agree with which is fine, but for my mind, we have more coming to piece this mystery together. Will be very interested to see what happens with the DLC 💚🌟

      I love the discussion on this topic as the opinions are always unique and interesting to ponder. I like this one for a lot of reasons, the cyclical nature could cause a variance, into a new iteration, though subsequently resolved within the consequence of the iteration coming into existence in the first place - assuming I'm reading that right. A snapshot in time between two ends of reality is the moment we play, therefore creating and resolving - very in-vogue to TOTK and what I take out of the manipulation of the fabric of reality being influenced either side of the ancient past and present with the master sword connecting the iterative nature between the two - in this instance, the master sword would be, once again, bridging the two.
      I'm on board. Love it 💚🌟

    I really wish that they would have added all of the temple dungeons from SS, OoT, TP and ALTTP to the game could legit be copy and pasted and I wouldn’t care or just change up mechanics slightly. They could be side content like Skyrim dungeons or something. Other people exploring them or bandits there. If there is 3 Separate Temple of Times still standing then all of the other places should be too even if some are in disrepair. Plus having old iconic places remade in ToTK’s engine would be amazing! Kakariko needs the giant windmill and graveyard leading to the shadow temple and being able to access under the well. Gerudo’s spirit temple bandit hideout.
    Things I wish they would have added in tho.
    Guardian armor should still be a thing and weapons with Guardians being enemies. Maybe have the Shieka have special tests for link in combat you could complete for rewards?
    Where are The Deku Scrubs???
    They should have included Poe’s as actual enemies for us to fight.
    More flying enemies in the sky/ sky islands and mini bosses flying around. New leviathans in the sky islands not just dragons.
    Helmasaurs, dodongos, wolfos, Deku babas, tektites. The huge rideable boars that the moblins rode, stal hydra iron knuckles and dark nuts
    Skull Kids! And a ruined forest Haven leading to the Forest Temple would have been awesome with the original Phantom Ganon there with his old model
    Why can’t we pet any dogs when that was brought up they wanted to add?
    Why remove Hearty fruit( forgot the name)
    Why is BoTW and ToTK the only Zelda games that don’t have a dedicated fishing spot? And regardless why are there no fishing rods at all in these games? Bombing and swimming works but, Nintendo has always had a soft spot for fishing(adding a brand new fishing spot in MM Remake) that idk why they wouldn’t add it. More realistic with the systems present or as an alternative. You could buy supplies or make them to get a bigger better catch
