  • I put the FrSky receiver with analog RSSI from the last video into the Skywalker for a range test. Pretty impressed with the results! .

    1.3GHz video transmitters (I use 200, 400, 800, and 1500mW on various planes) goo.gl/Mhq6TW
    I recommend this receiver to go with them. I use an older Racewood type they used to sell, but these are supposed to be at least as good with the same Comtech tuners in them. Apparently Racewood is no longer in business, so here's what replaced them: goo.gl/xC2RLx
    I use this 8dbi Patch Antenna, it has been my go-to antenna for a long time now, for years! lol I've been out more then 10 miles using one of these and the 800mW vtx listed above: goo.gl/hGmcNS
    On the transmitter side, the stock dipoles that come with them work pretty good together with that patch, but if you want slightly better performance and less weight/drag, consider these: goo.gl/CPuFGf

    Thanks for the info... Neat method. I must have missed that part in the RV forums. I also have my RVOSD set to detect FS same as you and will now program a switch to fake FS and trigger RTH, sure beats turning off the transmitter!! Again that was an excellent video as all of yours are. Thanks

    Awesome! I ordered the FrSky D8R-XP- 8 Channel Receiver w/ telemetry and RSSI and the 400mm antennas a few days ago. I'm sure I won't be able to get 3 miles in the city but looking forward to seeing what I can get.

    No, but I haven't tried any other receivers yet. Double check that you're using the right side of the green LED for the input. You can check that spot with a meter, full signal should show around 250mV I think, somewhere close to that.

    Nice! Ive been out to 7mi / 11km on frsky (DJT module with 8dbi patch (no booster!) and D8R II Pluse Rx with 40cm dipoles). Low signal warning was beeping nonstop but failsafe did not activate the whole time!

    Have the same setup as you (receiver, RVOSD) but still 5.8 on video with Circle Wireless antennas. Just getting started so don't have any videos yet. Had this setup in an EasyStar and it worked great. Also using the analog RSSI and CPPM. Noticed you were able to switch between FBY and RTH by using a switch? Right now I have RTH on failsafe and FBY on a 3 way switch. I'm a little gun shy of using my menu to toggle between RTH and FBY because of loss of control. Any secrets? Great Video!!!!

    The GWS servo I have on here centers normally like a normal servo. I've seen some that will just keep spinning round and round, those are continuous rotations servos. I don't use a head tracker either, just pan with a slider on my transmitter.

    Very nice, I fly on FrSky - but I'm having the rely on the telemetry beeps to decide if the signal is degrading. It was very interesting to see how the signal could be dramatically effected by things in the way, and just how quickly it could practically die and then recover to almost full strength

    I have my RVOSD set up to detect throttle for F/S. On my transmitter I have a switch programmed to put the throttle into the failsafe range, so I have a "RTH switch", separate from the 3 position one that activates the AP mode and menus. I think there's a post that explains it on the RV forums.

    LOL! They'll be cleared out soon once it gets a little colder. I'm pretty happy with how the test went also! It won't replace my Dragonlink for long range flying, but I can see myself throwing some cheap planes together just for fun, and using cheap receivers! lol

    I use kitchen counter edge laminate to save my wings from rubber band wear and tear. The proper glue is needed for the type of foam used. I have also used Isopropyl Alcohol 70-90% to thin epoxy to afix the laminate. Your vid looks very nice but I'd like to use a few more bands on the wing but in the front to back position

    Awesome flight I just subbed , I want to build my first long range plane with gps so I’ve been looking around UA-cam and I really like your set up , And as far as the osd think I understand what a lot of it means , the top center is your compass , the top upper left was your rssi, ambient temp I assume ? , lat & long coordinates , and the day month and year ? Bottom right screen was flight battery and mah used , fbattery voltage , fbattery amp draw . Bottom center screen is your distance from gps home point , and in the right next to that is the the running time since power up , . But I don’t know what that top upper left symbols are and what do the numbers mean all inside the center of the horizon bars ? Are they altitude in feet ? angle in degrees that the nose is pitched forward ? And angle in degrees that your rolling from left to right in each turn ? Air speed in Mph ?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  5 років тому +1

      That's all correct, the top right indicators are GPS signal level, GPS HDOP, and angle above the horizon from ground level at home to the plane at altitude. The AHI in the center is artificial horizon, the little center icon is the plane, the moving part is the ground, the numers besides the lines are pitch angle from level. The center left and right rolling "gauges" are GPS ground speed on the left side, and altitude in feet on the right. This is all the standard RVOSD layout if you want to get more in depth info. ;) www.rangevideo.com/rvosd/ Mine is a slightly over version than current, 5.01, I think the current one is V6 last I checked. Most of it is the same though.

      Many of the RC forums have loads of information. Flite Test, FPVLabs, RCGroups to name a few. Start small and simple and work your way up. You can get in on a budget, and as your experience and knowledge grows you can fine tune to the style of flying you want to do.

    Nice one, very keen to see your RVOSD stabiliser values / PID values etc. I've got the same plane, RVOSD v6, prop etc. The only time i've managed that kind of stability was in perfect calm. Please share your menu settings. If your flight was breeze affected then you've done really well. I'm starting to think the best way forward is to reduce my flight surfaces by half - to dumb everything down and reduce the twitches. Thanks Ricardo

    If you could help me with these questions, it would be awesome. im considering frsky as an upgrade from my spektrum dx7s. I would put the frsky into my futaba 8uaf and that would be my fpv transmitter. Now with that mod you did to your receiver, what is that doing, is it giving your more range and how much more if it does? Also is that antenna you are using on the controller giving you more range? What range were you able to safely get out of the frsky stock? If you could answer those that would be awesome.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  10 років тому

      The RSSI converter is just to allow me to see the signal strength displayed on my OSD, it doesn't affect range at all. The transmitter antenna may help some, but it's not a huge difference. It's just the optional higher gain antenna from FrSky. What probably does help more than anything is the antennas on the receiver. I put the longer sleeve dipoles on instead of the stock shorter "whisker" type that came on it. Those are also from FrSky, and a direct fit. I got all this from alofthobbies, but it can come from anyone that sells what you need of course. ;)

    Hello friend, great video!
    It seems that every time we lose the RSSI and the system actually in surpriende!
    Could you please tell the name or leave the link where you bought your lowpass filte, 5db Dipole antenna and main... The Booster 2.4Ghz signal?
    In fact, you are actually using two antennas, with the correct Eagle Viewer?
    Hugs

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  8 років тому +1

      I'm not sure I fully understand your questions, so forgive me if I don't answer everything. The low pass filter on the video transmitter is one from an FPV shop. I don't recall now where I got it, but it's basically a filter that will allow the 1.3GHz video to pass, but cuts anything in the 2.4GHz spectrum. The cut off is somewhere between the two. This is one - www.dpcav.com/xcart/Low-Pass-Antenna-Filter-for-1.2GHz-1.3GHz-TX.html The antennas are all from FrSky, I but my FrSky gear from Alofthobbies.com, they will have them. I did not use a booster/amp for the 2.4GHz radio, it's running stock power.

I am wondering if that whole 3 miles you got with your 2.4ghz control was because of the higher gain antenna you put on your transmitter. Is that the only reason why you could get the range you did or did you also increase the power of your transmitter? Thanks

      There's no dihedral or anhedral in this wing, it's just flat, neutral. It's a standard Skywalker 1900mm airframe. I wouldn't exactly call it unstable, it's not self righting either. The flight controller handles that though, I have a RVOSD in this one. I still have the plane actually, and fly it occasionally.
