I can picture Doug sitting in his crummy apartment watching his friends play one of his best songs on national tv without him. Tough situation for all involved. You really can't blame Doug, he was sick. And you can't blame the band for moving forward. I'm just glad his songs are still being played and appreciated, he deserves that. Peace.
It still makes me ache to remember hearing the news 26 years ago, living in Phoenix and somehow feeling a connection with the Blossoms and Doug. What I longed for most was to hear the songs he'd write once he finally got a wilingness to stay sober, no matter what band he was in. RIP to a brother I never met.
30 years ago! When I was a teen in the 90s, thought the 60s was so long ago. It's a huge gap, 30 years! And the music was so different. It was a time that I didn't exist. Present day, the 90s didn't seem so long ago...
this live version of this song is amazing its better then the album one and that is hard for a band to do man i miss the 90's thank you guys for the years of amazing music :)
Man the 90's were the best, and I love being in the supermarket with my two kids and songs like this come on and I start singing and embarrass them 😂☮️
I saw them live today and they are still amazing, they never really showed Jesse or Bill on the tonight show too bad, but what a great live performance.
My favourite song of the past 20 years - if I hadn`t blown the whole things years ago I might not be alone - great breaking heart and head lyrics and succinct, enormous melody, cracking singer - sad ending - I guess that was in the lyrics if anyone had of listened - all in all a most amazing piece of pop culture. VVG of enother era, another form, another dab of wonderfulness, just different tools, same conclusion - RIP
I’ve been on a Gin blossom kick, listening to all their performances. And they are consistently amazing live throughout the years. Love it love them. Thanks brain for remembering✨😘👍🏼
Hard to believe this song is 20 yrs old! Incredible melody lines, great energy, great dynamics between verse & chourus, just really good writing, what a great song!
No. Its no lip sync. I saw them last summer and they STILL sound this good 20 years later...they just look like English Teachers. Plus the vocals are slightly different here than in the album.
Doug is fully credited for his song writing in "New Miserable Experience's" credits. As well in interviews with the band early and to this day. They even dedicated two album names to him.
read doug hopkins bio on google. they (the record company) really screwed doug. too sad. he was in rehab (out patient i think) but couldn't handle the depression he suffered through from childhood. i myself have suffered from depression since my folks split when i was 10 years old. now i'm 63 and probably happier than ever. i credit my loving wife, grandchild and most of all God's grace for guiding me through some terrible, unthinkable years. Depressed people self medicate and don't understand it only makes matters worse. i feel for doug. i miss him and pray he's in a better place.
+David Ligon He was self destructing and trying to take the band with him. He was given a choice, he made the wrong one. He made an even more permanent one later.
I hope you are well 2 years on, but the GBs had no choice. Doug was asking other proplr to play his stuff in studio becauze he was too wasted....except the scratch track solo that ended up on Hey Jealousy
dmac2903 yup...i have no idea what I am talking about. None. Not a clue. He was definitely not scaring band members by passing on requests to play his leads.
David Wolfe nailed it ! This is awesome live and to sound that awesome back in 93 live on Leno ! The Gin Blossoms rock ! One of the best bands ever !!!
I used to think they wrote the theme song to the show friends. When I found out that was not them I respected them more. "Follow you down" sounds like an alternate version of the friends theme song.
I agree! They sound great live which what a great voice Robin has. And hey GoodNote DJ, you are right this is a " Haunting Song " Something very special about it. TY
While it's terrible what happened to Doug Hopkins, keeping him on would have destroyed any chance they had at success. While recording New Miserable Experience, Hopkins was unable to stand during recording sessions. It got to the point where it was so bad, the band was going to lose their contract if they didn't let him go. While I feel for Hopkins' plight, as I suffer from depression too, you can't destroy everything around you because you don't want to get help.
I really thought they'd go massive globally effectively replacing REM when they stalled post 95. A fantastic performance. Never really understood why they didn't try harder in the UK and the rest of Europe. One day I'll see them.
For every Gin Blossoms video, there's always this comment: "The original guitarist was so much better! DAE Doug Hopkins?" Just enjoy the video. If you don't like his replacement, then why are you on this page?
Doug was great songwriter but conflicted you have train your mind to overcome your emotions or else you’ll lose yourself that’s what happened to Doug very sad man
It's funny how name fashions change isn't it anyway ;) When I grew up (I was in the Doug era), there were LOADS of Dougs, and other names (like mine). They've all buggered off now. All the kids say they are "Josh" and "Zaphod" and "Latent Killbot 14614 Where is Sara Connor". The bastards.
I like the band with this configuration. Scottie has such a pleasant vibe. And yes, I have listened to early stuff, with Doug. It was too fast. Post-Doug makes better use of Robin's voice. No argument with Doug's writing abilities.
Saw them at the Coach House in May 1993. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Right up there with U2 the Who ELP and Tull. What a tragedy they couldn't straighten it out and they essentially ransomed him out of the band. Blood on their hands.
I've seen this band 6 times, tomorrow in Stroudsburg PA will be 7 and I've never heard them mention Doug. It's the one thing that irks me about these guys, though I really dig the tunes.
Have you seen Lady Gaga's face? Jay Z, Jennifer Hopez and countless other ugly people on tv who are called good looking because they have money or in Jennifer Hopez case other reasons that has nothing to do with her looks or talent or lack of.
Nah, I think I'll reply. This is the internet, I can do that. I just have lowly BA -- if you're a professor and the fairly common words "egregious" and "hyperbole" are confusing to you, I am glad I wasn't educated at your institution. Have a great weekend though bud (seriously).

Well said...
They shit on him when he needed support. Blackmailed him.

Robin sounds so good live!!!
Some people are just born with amazing singing voices.
This song is so damn haunting. One of the great rock songs of the 90s.
Yup!!!!!
One of the best voices in modern music!
Maybe it's the way his vocals are EQ'd here compared to other live shows but Robin's voice sounds so warm and full.
anybody still hooked on this song in August 2019 ?
Oct 2020
Yep, 2021 now.
July, 2021
Still on our set list, August 2021...
This song sounds exactly like the studio version which shows how great a singer this guy is.
30 years ago! When I was a teen in the 90s, thought the 60s was so long ago. It's a huge gap, 30 years! And the music was so different. It was a time that I didn't exist. Present day, the 90s didn't seem so long ago...
Doug Hopkins was a very tortured soul and died way too young but his legacy endures in this song. I hope he is finally at peace.
Thank you Doug
no autotune no bullshit, real ,live music!!! just heart and soul on this song, they need to tour again !!!! see them i must! haha
this live version of this song is amazing its better then the album one and that is hard for a band to do man i miss the 90's thank you guys for the years of amazing music :)
Absolutely NOT better than the album version.
For me, the 80s-90s were another life. This one sucks.
Man the 90's were the best, and I love being in the supermarket with my two kids and songs like this come on and I start singing and embarrass them 😂☮️
I saw them live today and they are still amazing, they never really showed Jesse or Bill on the tonight show too bad, but what a great live performance.
Nice live performance. I believe Dave Letterman liked this band almost as much as me.
Live. I saw them MULTIPLE times in the early to mid 1990's and they always sounded great.
This is really a good performance.
Doug is here listening....GOD Bless U Man
My favourite song of the past 20 years - if I hadn`t blown the whole things years ago I might not be alone - great breaking heart and head lyrics and succinct, enormous melody, cracking singer - sad ending - I guess that was in the lyrics if anyone had of listened - all in all a most amazing piece of pop culture. That one person who clicked dislike probably thought it meant "dis i like".
I’ve been on a Gin blossom kick, listening to all their performances. And they are consistently amazing live throughout the years. Love it love them. Thanks brain for remembering✨😘👍🏼
Incredible performance..not sure it gets any better to be honest.
OMG what a great live performance!!!
Hard to believe this song is 20 yrs old! Incredible melody lines, great energy, great dynamics between verse & chourus, just really good writing, what a great song!

@@Mayzingart🤔
A really good performance of a really good song.
I won tickets to see them in concert in Honolulu in 2013. It was a great show!
Live. I saw them MULTIPLE times in the early to mid 1990's and they always sounded great.
Hey these guys are great! This song sounds like it could be a top 40 hit still today!
He sounds really good. Great song.
Faultless performance
No. Its no lip sync. I saw them last summer and they STILL sound this good 20 years later...they just look like English Teachers. Plus the vocals are slightly different here than in the album.
What a great jam man ... intense lead guitar work on that chorus .. man ..
Love this song more now than ever. Thanks for posting this live performance.

Rock on man! :)

This is really a good performance.
Haven't seen tambourine playing since Time Curry in The Worst Witch. Oh the 90's were amazing.
Anywhere Doug would go, these fellows would follow him down - follow him down but not that far.
I'm old gen y born in 82 and still to this day like the gen X early to mid 90s hippy music. Ha must have been my older siblings influence!
This isn't hippy music, idiot.
love the gin blossoms.....when I was 14 this was the best, i still listen to the greatest hits cd monthly
This was actually done in 1994
I love these guys!!
They were/are such a good band.
those guys were the best, still rockin! hope to see them around soon
This song is the 90s
90s i miss it!! one of the best era ever
Thanks for posting.
Ain't listened to this in 20 years.
Just brought back back some great memories . . .
They are still touring pretty constantly too.
Reginald Marshall DL Congratulations Im Sorry and No Chocolate Cake too.
Two of the Greatest albums of the last 15 years.
i remember watching this when it was on tv i was 10 years old then...shit that was almost 20 years ago!!!
I just noticed...Robin looks just like that guy from Aliens..."Game over man, game over!" Bill Paxton.
Good Catch
Yes!
I saw the Gin Blossoms June 2018 summerfest milwaukee. Still sound amazing. Listened to a 1993 metro chicago concert 2 weeks ago on XRT.
Saw them in Milwaukee sans Hopkins. Totally different band.
Thanks for the throw back I was about 13
just saw them live at Saratoga this past week ! I was amazed that they sounded as good as in the beginning !! Good show !!
Love spac!
Can't wait to see you at the Popcorn Fest!!!!!!

Any good newer bands?
Lupet
Agree. He probably has in-ear monitors, too. Those really help keep you on track.
Great song I like they rock
Watch this on Jay Leno and 93 that’s when I knew that the gin blossoms were great
@skatav8
He's in Gin Blossim's, he could wear a fucking princess crown and still be one the best rockers to ever live.
the number 5
damn that was really good.
You can see I'm no shape for driving, and anyway I've got no place to go...
Jesse Valenzuela!
Jay's wrong. it's not their debut album. Dusted was, in 1989. But still, great song.
wow that Lord Farquaad can sing!
ok
wow
I used to think they were saying "Hey Josie".
wow..you will have to live with that the rest of your life
I thought it was "Hey Chelsea"
هلا والله
I miss Tommy Keene, too.
For every Gin Blossoms video, there's always this comment: "The original guitarist was so much better! DAE Doug Hopkins?" Just enjoy the video. If you don't like his replacement, then why are you on this page?
Doug was great songwriter but conflicted you have train your mind to overcome your emotions or else you’ll lose yourself that’s what happened to Doug very sad man
holy reverb
DOUG
Damn they rock live what happen to them
It's funny how name fashions change isn't it anyway ;)
When I grew up (I was in the Doug era), there were LOADS of Dougs, and other names (like mine).
They've all buggered off now. All the kids say they are "Josh" and "Zaphod" and "Latent Killbot 14614 Where is Sara Connor".
The bastards.
Gin Blossoms movie with Scoot Mcnairy?
He does look like Robin (the lead singer) huh
@Devin, are you talking about Scott the owner of Long Wongs?
And to think this was sung by john rzeznik... hahaha great song!
Ygor Souza what?
I like the band with this configuration. Scottie has such a pleasant vibe. And yes, I have listened to early stuff, with Doug. It was too fast. Post-Doug makes better use of Robin's voice. No argument with Doug's writing abilities.
doug is on hey jealousy
Bill Paxton on vocals
Doug Hopkins was the best thing that happened to these otherwise average musicians.
douche alert
This vocalist is the band.
is there a live version of this song with Doug Hopkins playing?
Nope. The band got national success after he died.
Check out Zac C's channel, he has a version live from chuy's of "hey jealousy" with doug playing
Wow, Criminal Minds should have stayed with this intro song.
So good live or lip sync?
I need some cowbell
Very gene Clark-ish. Cool.
i blew the lead singer! in NH
Saw them at the Coach House in May 1993. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Right up there with U2 the Who ELP and Tull. What a tragedy they couldn't straighten it out and they essentially ransomed him out of the band. Blood on their hands.
Are you serious...? That is egregious hyperbole friend. They had a few cute hits, but he's not one of the immortals.
HMM G Brian on Bass, Curtis on Drums
I've seen this band 6 times, tomorrow in Stroudsburg PA will be 7 and I've never heard them mention Doug. It's the one thing that irks me about these guys, though I really dig the tunes.
I wonder if Doug watched this live. I bet he was depressed to see his songwriting being noticed without much credit.
tambourine es la cabra
robin screwed the lyrics up
Dang Jay Lenos chin is bigger here than today. Did he get chin reduction? Conan FTW Oh btw....one of the best 90s bands :)
Have you seen Lady Gaga's face? Jay Z, Jennifer Hopez and countless other ugly people on tv who are called good looking because they have money or in Jennifer Hopez case other reasons that has nothing to do with her looks or talent or lack of.
