I'll never forget the 90's I was 16 when this song came out. I was falling in love. Learning to drive. Smoking pot. hanging out with some of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen in the prime of their youth. Drinking beer with buddies. It was high school. Just having that pain of falling for someone in school and how bad you wanted to be with them. Growing up in those summers everything just seemed so prosperous. America has changed. The soul is gone.
Things change. We've all changed too, and the youth of today will have different experiences they look back on, but they will have them and they will feel the same way we do when we look back. Memories are often experienced through a rose-colored filter.
This has to be the best live version of this song. I have a bunch of radio station cds where they did acoustic versions but they always seem to fool around during them. This is pure perfection! I love the acoustic sounding electric.
im sitting here, reading comments, and trying not to cry because this beautiful, moving song about someone a lot of us love and miss is being performed live....and im wondering how and why this is "cute" or "funny"...then I get to the end. haha!!!! Robby is one of my favorite musicians - and is always fun to watch. I saw them a week ago (June, 2014)...for the FIRST time. I am a bigger fan NOW than in the 1990s, i think, even though i loved their radio hits back then.
This must have been massive for these guys, saw them in Denmark and thought these guys should go Global and they did, my kids adore them and have learnt guitar to their songs Keep it gooing boys.
I was 6 years old when I saw this on TV. Today, while listening to the Goo Goo Dolls I randomly remembered this and decided to look it up. Holy shit, you can seriously find anything on UA-cam. This is when they were still an amazing band, right before they sold out. I really think they could’ve been one of the greatest punk bands of all-time if they didn’t go the adult radio direction. Kinda bums me out.
I simply could not agree with you more :) I have collected so many variants of this song being performed live over the years, and man, they just can even come close to sounding like this anymore -- mind you this performance was 15 years ago!
Thank you so much for posting this! Wow, it's such a crisp video! I LOVE this! It's too cute when they basically taking a running jump into the egg nog and Mike hops in last LOL! Always good watching them have a good time. They're just such cool, fun and amazing guys. Great performance too, of course! Gotta love Goo Goo Dolls! =)
god what happend to this band, they were so much better when they started unlike the new trash they play. look at them in this video with there classic 90s grunge look. now they wear skin tight jeans with gay haircuts and black fingernails.
When the live version sounds like the recording, the band is for real. They're great!

@Zac Atkinson Funny, they said the same thing back then about even older music.
If you didn't live in that era you'll never understand. Things were different. Things were better.
we need this era back
One word that comes to mind when I hear music like this is "sincerity" Something that is FOR SURE lacking in todays "top hits"

The riff and tone of that guitar are legendary!
I had a good VHS back in the day (4 heads). They transfered well to DVD and now UA-cam. Thanks for the date correction.

Such a excellent arrangement of sound timing voice and instrumental excellence...
I love the feel that Paul Schaeffer playing organ adds to this version

Still love them to this day! I do miss Mike backing them up on the drums though...=(
Good HQ. You and I probably have the same video cut :) -- One correction though; this performance occured sometime in late December, 1995.
YES, I agree we do, but it's certainly not coming back anytime in the near future.
@MAVERICKALP haha i just noticed that it says that on his guitar
