Cheap insurance for my engines. I’ve used this method for over fifty years and never had an engine failure.

  • @michaelamick8295

Proper inspection should include cutting the media loose, unfolding it & washing it out with mineral spirits to determine how much & what kind of metal flakes the engine is producing. This should be compared with known engine metals to analize if wear is normal for age/mileage or is something wearing prematurely. Oil analysis would also be a really good idea for higher mileage oil changes. Doing mine as soon as weather allows per described above.

I think the longest ive run k&n was a little over 12k miles or a little over year, i always use Castrol Edge Full Synthetic High Milage (black bottles) got a 95 Honda Civic and a 2002 Toyota Corolla S both use K&N and Full Synthetic High Milage there both over 150k miles K&N has never let me down. I try to change both between 8-10k miles some times i don’t have time to do a tune up on my cars because of work, but i never let it bother me because i know i can count on the K&N Filter to keep going strong even if i go over 10k miles. One thing I just noticed in this k&n is bypass valve setup it has is little different then you see in other filters. Given fact that dirt oil goes from outside in then is clean. If you had failure of bypass valve on this design you have high possibility of engine failure due to those pieces going right into oil gallery. Definitely some food for thought. I look at filter designs all the time and just noticed this on k&n design where as fram and all others mainly use stamped steel design.

You totally misunderstood what I meant.
What I meant was that I use this same style filter in my car and havent changed to any other company name since .
I change my oil regularly one supposed to.
If I would leave the same oil in my car for a few years I shouldn't have a car at all

You can change a premium oil filter every other synthetic oil change, which would be every 10-12k miles for me. The oil filtration actually gets better vs. new as is loads up over time.

This one made in Mexico. However, latest dissections indicate K&N now back to being made by Champ Labs in the US. Weakest point on these has been the attached nut. Some have failed causing leaks. With the exception of one wide pleat area, this one looks ok. As long as it didn't tear, got the job done.

Oil becomes abrasive as the normal wear and tear of the engine leaves more metal particles in the oil as the miles add up.

lol thank you. I appreciate the feedback. I'll have to check the dates when I uploaded the videos. Sometimes the manufacturer may update the filter; such as where it's made, changing the anti drain back valve material (such as Fram ExtraGuard), etc. The last I looked K&N used impregnated resin; or cellulose. Nonetheless, a great filter. I've had no issues using K&N. Cheers.

Interesting to see one opened after use. I just installed a K&N in my 2020 Mustang four-banger, hopefully it will be an improvement over the Motorcraft, though, don't really know. Stupid question, but the filter in my car is mounted vertically with the opening at the top, so does that mean the drain back will never be needed? I guess the drain back is for filters that are mounted with the opening downward?

I almost switched to K&N filters but the way they attach the end nut concerns me. I've seen quite a few complaints about leaks. Not sure how common this is, but seems like a catastrophic failure when it happens.

What I haven't found is any objective testing of the claims about filter media. K&N's intake air filters have lower resistance to flow than typical air filters, but this comes with allowing larger particulate through. There are ways to construct filter media that are equally effective without introducing as much resistance, but that is an unproven claim.

So basically, if you're a bit of an oil changing freak like I am, on my 2002 Sienna I could put in the K&N Filter and just change the oil every 4,000 miles and that filter should do just fine without a change for 12,000 miles?
Because as it stands now I change my oil about every 5000 miles and I always put in a premium oil filter each time ( lately been using Mobil 1 extended performance or Royal purple). My car is 196k on it.

  • @stevensevek6151

What oil was used here? Pennzoil fully synthetic. Is that Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum? As dirty as that filter looks I would think that the flow rate had dropped considerably with that extended change interval!
I usually use a K&N filter element but I change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles.
