Hi! It's come to my attention that there is actually distributor for the Rosemary and Co brushes in the US (and they're super friendly!): www.windriverarts.com/ :)
Yep! This is who I buy my brushes from. They're a bit old school as you can't order online and you have to order the phone (including payment). But I've bought multiple R&C brushes from them and its always been great.
@@QQasaurus Just pulled the trigger on these myself, this morning! I've had the tab open for a while now. I've been using W&N Series 7 since I started painting but I love the longer tips on these when I watch Sorastro paint so I'm really looking forward to trying them out. I got a size 1 and 2.
There are about a million videos of "10 things you need to know" or "10 things i wish i knew" when started painting. And then there is this video... no click bait title just useful information for people how to start or start again or even struggle with painting. Just like your painting videos, just great work!
I had never painted a miniature 4 months ago, but with the help of your videos I have learnt so much. Thanks for your help with painting in this hobby, nobody believes I had never painted before now at my local gaming group. Much appreciate your hard work, cheers mate
I began my miniature painting journey in 2020 (Jan), Sorastaro's painting was my first source of anyone painting. I have taken the lessons described, put them to use and now do commission work for some people. I paint purely for pleasure even if I'm making money for doing it. Thanks Sorastaro, you have been a wonderful teacher for this hobby. One day we will meet at AdeptIcon or at a Golden Demon event.
I started watching you back when you did Imperial Assault miniatures, and I can honestly say it's because of you that I've gotten into this hobby which I've loved so much. So thank you for all that you do, and keep it up!
My man Sorastro been hitting the gym. 💪🏽 Thank you for the insight on the artist opus brushes! You saved me lots of hobby money! 😊 I will be supporting your patron soon.👍🏽
Mark...Can I say from the bottom of my heart a big Thank You for all that you have done, am doing, and will do in the future? You got me into this hobby and I can't thank you enough for your tips, advice, and incredible production of videos from music down to the lighting. Thanks for all you do sir and may you have a blessed future!
That's a superb video! This is adressing some of the questions I often ask to myself (or you directly) and will be helpful in the future as well, as it is kind of timeless. Thanks a lot for that and I can only encourage you to stick to that series from time to time with a new episode 😊
This Christmas I'm finally delving into the world of painting miniatures. It's been a long road to get here but it was your videos that made me take the leap so thank you and I'll be watching more and more!
I enjoy your videos for the calm narration, when I‘m not really interested in the mini itself. Still, even from those videos, I did pick up a view tips and techniques to experiment with. Watching you put the bristles of the brush exactly where you intend to is incredibly impressive! Thank you very much for sharing!
Absolute legend mate. Thanks Sorastro! Ive followed you for years and can now also finally put a face to the calm, smooth and relaxed voice. You're painting videos have inspired me so much 👍 keep up the brilliant work!
I’ve got my skills for painting from watching content creators like you and chatting to friends who been painting for years. I look back to where I started to now and I’ve a so much better. These types of videos definitely help
There is an unlikely contradictory effect in this video: it speaks about simple, useful tips and basic aspects; and at the same time it feels very inspiring, as there is deep thinking behind. Thanks for yet another great, kind advice.
As far as the ending bit about taking pictures of your minis goes, I've learned that flash photography (using my phone) is great for telling you your mini doesn't look as good as you initially thought. Though while it can be a bit disappointing, I've learned to use the imperfections I get to see with flash to go back and clean up the model.
Thank you Sorastro, you are not only a great inspiration but also a great help for us beloved hobby. It's always wonderful to see your tips and miniatures, also the music and your voice are incredibly soothing.
Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been watching you for years and love your ability to make this incredibly intimidating hobby more approachable. It would be awesome to see more of these behind the scenes videos in the future! Camera setups, how to work with different brands of paints, terrain building etc!
I dont often interact with videos but i always feel compellee to with yours. Your sincere and genuine effort to help the community while also enjoying yourself painting is amazing. There's a reason your name is known across multiple platforms. Thanks for another brilliant video!
This channel is a huge inspiration for many, but in any case for me. Thank you very much so far for sharing your work. Even if you look at the older videos and realize that Sorastro's has also made qualitative developments (I shy away from writing "improvements", because even the works of the first hour are simply awesome), this is incredibly motivating when you realize that you yourself might paint in a similar quality range as the artist here a few years ago. Because it gives you perspective that it's worth looking further. Thank you for an incredible amount of tips, of entertainment, and of motivation. I look forward to each new video that comes out here and always enjoy looking back at the older works as well. And I also want to mention that I really appreciate the background music. Very kind regards from Germany 🙂 Frank
Almost everything I have learned about painting minis is from your videos! I started with imperial assault, which those videos are good for beginners. I feel like I got good at painting minis with the Journeys in Middle Earth videos, and now I just paint without following any tutorials, but I still watch all your videos because they really are the best filming quality that I have seen for painting, and they are just quite relaxing and fun!
Great advice! One of my biggest struggles is trying to perfect EVERY. SINGLE. MINIATURE. It takes a lot of my time and I don't get nearly as much painting finished as I should considering how much time I paint. But I can't seem to break myself of the habit.
Ha, thanks! Sounds like you have the curse of the perfectionist! It can be a tough thing to break.. Maybe just try doing a speed paint of a bunch of goblins or zombies or something for a game you want to get to the table.. 🙂
One thing you can do to deal with that is identify the most important part/area of a mini (usually the skin or armour, and the bare face, and sometimes a signature weapon). Paint these to your desired high standard. Use a more basic approach for everything else (i.e. Contrast/Speedpaint + Highlights), like straps, boots, etc. That way, you focus your time and effort on those parts that gave the most impact on the viewer and less on parts people know are there, but don't focus on. I highly recommend Ninjon's most recent video on the topic.
Thank you for all your videos, you've helped me as a beginner with accepting that its okay to mess up, and that its often times easy to fix . The comment about looking at the plain plastic mini before and after is great and shows that any paint is a significant improvement. It's comments like that have helped my confidence as a painter and make it easier to pick up the brush rather than being scared to "mess up".
Nice to see behind the lense. If I had that setup I would also use the monitor! I appreciate your dedication to giving us the closest & clearest view possible.
Ooo i really love the idea of taking a picture of unpainted models and then the one u painted yourself for comparision as it really highlights how comparing a beginner to someone of Sorastro's level is just detrimental for improvement rather than helpful.
Thank you so much for the video Sorastro (and for all the videos you have done over the years). I started with your Imperial Assault videos (as we were waiting for Legion to launch) and have watched so many over the years and learned so much from them.
Love your positive way as always. Most of us Hobby painters are just this. We are not living from. Even we wish we would be good as the popular ones. But here we have to stop thinking about this. This vid you should stick very on top of your YT gallery cause its important for everyone not just starters to remain the fun behind and to though about why we painting. Surely most wanna have a finished Army or something and this is also fine. From my point of view. Its an hobby to slow down from workaday. So thanks for being here and remind us as well :3
Another beautiful video!! Comparision is the thief of joy. So true!! Gonna order the Rosemary brushes for my Zombicide painting project! Many thanks again for putting out such great instructions and your tone is so relaxing and its all so well produced! beautiful!
FYI, Rosemary & Co series 323 is the same brush as Artis Opus series "M"(with slightly different handles as pointed out), and their dry bushes are found by just searching "dry brush". Also, R&Co do ship to Canada.
What amazes me is how far your face is away from the model. I wear glasses to see fat but take them off and bring the model close to my face to paint. Love your stuff. Keep it up!
Awesome video. Love what you touched in the closing thoughts segment. I too, suffer from putting myself down in almost everything, and being relatively new to this, my first project was Cthulhu Death May Die, and I thought I did barely okay, but when people saw my work they were not only ecstatic but praised it. Now when I look at the unpainted figures on the back of the box(component list) I'm happy that I took the plunge.
wonderful vid, thank you very much, i found you some time ago and have found your work not only inspiring but relaxing at the same time! love your work so much! thank you so much!
Great advice. I really love the take a picture of the unpainted model to compare to your finished product. That sounds like an awesome way to push back on downplaying my paint jobs. Thanks!
Thanks for this, mate. Been watching you since your first Descent video (which helped me get the entire core box painted) and have been a follower ever since. Your work has grown by leaps and bounds and I love that you tackle minis and games outside the “standard” miniature games. You’ve improved and have helped me improve alongside you. Please keep up the amazing work. You are a treasure here on UA-cam.
Excellent advice, "Comparison is the thief of joy" is a quote that I will always remember. Also, using a camera as another way to magnify for detail is a great idea that I did not even think of. Btw, I have been diligently watching your "Star Wars Imperial Assault" videos to help with painting the starter set figures. Thanks for your advice and keep the videos coming.
thank you for your advice and for being a continued source of inspiration! I'm not particularly great at painting yet but I'm loving the hobby and it's fun to continue to learn and grow :)
Thank you Master Sorastro, a beautifull video that show your face so human for followers like me who don't have your results. Time, training that s the way, nothing supernatural. Like I say, fantastic painters or beginers, that s the same hobby we like to share, we all have something to share. Thank you.
YOU. ARE. AMAZING!!! I too started watching around the time of the Imperial Assault era and it's really thanks to you that I've gotten a general feel for how to go about highlighting essentially any miniature. I now plan most of my own paint jobs without referencing a tutorial. Though, sometimes I'll look up what you've done if it's a character I feel strongly about. The only trouble is Vallejo Model Color seems to be pretty scant where I am, so I end up analyzing the closest Citadel/Scalecolor equivalent.
Hi sorastro I just have to say that I got into painting my miniatures after watching your videos and I really enjoy doing it. Thanks a lot for that and your awesome videos.
Watching your content helped me find a style I'm happy with. I've only just finished my legion starter set after years of having a pile of shame. The difference between the stormtroopers and the rebels is emmence and it really drove home how much I've improved and how my style has changed to!
Thanks for the great advice. I painted miniatures a bit when I was a pre-teen. then left the hobby. after studying animation for a few years, and then having animation as my career for another 12 years, i decided to pick up the brush back up. I was getting into boardgaming and wanted to paint my figures for imperial assault and Zombicide. that is where i found your first videos for the stormtroopers and zombies. i found with your instruction and my Art career, it wasnt as scary as i thought it was, as i could adapt on the fly, and had a good knowledge of colour theory. but it was practice, Repetition, discipline and some good youtube tips . Thanks again
Great little tip adding the flow improver to the water mate. I've been using scale75 for about two years now both ranges scale colour and fantasy and find they've made me in to a better painter I think they force you to improve your skill hence like you say the definite learning curve to these paints I love em.great vid dude.
Huge fan sorastro. I watch all your videos regardless of genre. You are the " high standard" to me. You do such a great job, philosophically as well as demonstrably....and jeez...guns mate.
@Sorastro's Painting philosophy of "take it to a certain level". We all beat ourselves up. But it doesn't matter. Really, it's what you like yourself that matters. Your "recipe " for star wars armour is great. You've really inspired me not to be frightened of mixing colour. But also, it really helps to be able to go back and check. Sometimes I have to pause. These videos are a security blanket so i can revert to a standard paintjob. I hope others feel the same. And you do the music! Please don't burn out. You're appreciated, but do it cos you like it rather than obligated.
Thank you Leslie! Oh, I do it because I love it (and it happens to pay the bills!). I've become quite good at balancing my work/life too, and always put quality over quantity when it comes to whatever I'm creating.. 😁
@Sorastro's Painting cool. Spotted that a couple of creatives I follow on here have decided to stop. Just pointing out that that's OK too. But long may you reign.
Thank you! I think it helps that I make no effort to pander to the YT algorithms (I'm in many ways quite a poor "UA-camr"!). I produce exactly the kind of videos that I love to produce, and at a pace that is comfortable for me. (And I still make time for gaming, family, exercise etc!) 😁
Thanks for that. Really nice reminders at the end for any level of painter. I really appreciate the time and care you put in to sharing your work with us. Cheers!
Hello Sorastro. Very helpful video, just to see how the great one finish all that miniatures. I always had some thoughts about how you can perform for all the years. One of the most helpful tool is your desk. I used a standart desk for years past, and ruined my lower back and neck additionally to my normal job. Wish me luck that I can finish my projects, still unfinished, before I need a surgery. Thanks for taking us backstage again and make this guide for how to use paints, tools, brushes and materials. This is special. 😎 May your paint never dry 😄 Happy painting!
Thanks for the comments at the end of the video here. I put down my own painting ability quite often, and am often disappointed in my progress. But you're right, comparing the job I've done to the plain mini...they actually don't look half bad. 😅
Buenas explicaciones, me gusta tu canal y sobre no compararte, tienes razon absolutamente....te seguire viendo y aprendiendo de tu experiencia. Saludos
Thank you sir, this is a great hobby we get to be a part of! Having good tips and reminders like this helps us all to keep going, or also to get started! Whether that start is for the first time, or a restart!
Your honestly my inspiration. I hope i can produce the level you can one day, just need to not worry so much about hitting perfection with my first few minis
I noticed in some of your older videos you were not using a wet palette but now you do. I would love a video from you talking about that transition or even some keys to using a wet palette. Thanks for all the great videos.
thanks, i have always used Windsor Newton brushes, but just splurged out and bought some Rosmary and Co on your recommendation. they Ship to New Zealand. so excited

@@Luigiwarrior Hi! I usually use a size 1 or 2 (Series 33) 🙂
Wow. Thank you so much. Everywhere else I go I get the "these are banned in the US."
"Comparison is the thief of joy." Thank you. Wise words of relief.
You're welcome, sir! 🙂
I hafta catch myself from not falling into this very trap. Your work is phenomenal. But no truer a quote!!. Paint for the joy of it.
Holy crap. Sorastro is ripped! Right on.

Please keep up the amazing work. You are a treasure here on UA-cam.
Wow, thanks so much for the kind words, John! I really appreciate that 😊
Tremendous video sir. Been painting various things for years, there's always something to learn!
Thanks a lot, Maximus! I'm glad you found it useful 😀
Thank you for the kind words, sir! I hope you enjoy finishing off your IA set 😀
Even your instructional videos are soothing
Ha, thanks Tom! I aim to sooth 😁
One of the best educational videos I've ever seen...Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us !!
Thanks very kind - thank you Joe! 😀
Thank you for the comment about putting down your own work. That was an amazing mindset!
You're very welcome, sir! I'm glad you found it helpful 😀
thank you for your advice and for being a continued source of inspiration! I'm not particularly great at painting yet but I'm loving the hobby and it's fun to continue to learn and grow :)
Thank you, kindly! Learning and enjoying, that's what it's all about 😀
Been watching this channel since Star Wars Legion came out, this video was excellent, thank you Sorastro for the knowledge transfer.
Thank you so much for the kind words 😀
Great video as ever. Lots of great advice in there, especially about painting for yourself!
Thanks, buddy! 😀
Thanks for this. Super helpful! Especially the paint dilution.
Thank you Katherine! I'm glad you found the video useful 😀
Thank you for this video. I am trying to get back into it, and this came out at the perfect time for me
Thank you! I'm very happy to hear that 😀
Thank you Master Sorastro, a beautifull video that show your face so human for followers like me who don't have your results.
Time, training that s the way, nothing supernatural.
Like I say, fantastic painters or beginers, that s the same hobby we like to share, we all have something to share.
Thank you.
Amen, my friend! 🤗
YOU. ARE.
Thanks a lot Jared! I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the hobby 😀
Hi sorastro I just have to say that I got into painting my miniatures after watching your videos and I really enjoy doing it. Thanks a lot for that and your awesome videos.
Thank you! I'm very happy to hear that 😀
Watching your content helped me find a style I'm happy with. I've only just finished my legion starter set after years of having a pile of shame. The difference between the stormtroopers and the rebels is emmence and it really drove home how much I've improved and how my style has changed to!
Fantastic Dylan! Good for you 😀
Thanks for the great advice.
Awesome Mike! Thanks man 🤗
Great stuff! I love my Rosemary and Co. brushes too! Got em before they stopped shipping to US.
Nice!! 😁
Great little tip adding the flow improver to the water mate. I've been using scale75 for about two years now both ranges scale colour and fantasy and find they've made me in to a better painter I think they force you to improve your skill hence like you say the definite learning curve to these paints I love em.great vid dude.
Awesome Wayne! Thanks for sharing 😀
Huge fan sorastro. I watch all your videos regardless of genre. You are the " high standard" to me. You do such a great job, philosophically as well as demonstrably....and jeez...guns mate.
Ha ha, thank you, Leslie! I really appreciate that 😊
@Sorastro's Painting philosophy of "take it to a certain level".
Such great advice. Thanks for sharing your insight.
Thank you, sir! 😀
Great painter and a buff guy! I’ve vatched most of your videos because of a great video production
Ha ha, thank you kindly! 😊
Great video some really good and helpful tips!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you found it useful 🙂
The Rosemary & Co tip is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for this, I can actually afford some lovely brushes ❤
Excellent! I'm happy to hear that 😀
Thanks for that. Really nice reminders at the end for any level of painter. I really appreciate the time and care you put in to sharing your work with us. Cheers!
Thanks a lot, David! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😀
Hello Sorastro.
May your paint never dry 😄
Happy painting!
Thank you for the kind comment! I do hope your back is ok! 🤗
Hi Buddy😄
My back is not ok but manageable😅
Thanks for your mental support.
And you're always welcome
Great advise that everyone should listen to, thanks.
Thank you my friend 🤗
Loved this video - great job! Super insightful!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😀
Thanks for the comments at the end of the video here. I put down my own painting ability quite often, and am often disappointed in my progress.
But you're right, comparing the job I've done to the plain mini...they actually don't look half bad. 😅
There ya go! 🤗
Sorastro the BEAST!
Lol 😁
Great as always!! You always manage to give the correct information in a simple and effective way.
Thank you sir! I really appreciate that 😀
Buenas explicaciones, me gusta tu canal y sobre no compararte, tienes razon absolutamente....te seguire viendo y aprendiendo de tu experiencia. Saludos
Beautiful advice about comparing the end result to the pre-primed mini :)
Thank you Lau! I hope it helps people feel good about their work 🙂
Thank you sir, this is a great hobby we get to be a part of! Having good tips and reminders like this helps us all to keep going, or also to get started! Whether that start is for the first time, or a restart!
Thank you my friend! 🤗
Thank you for the video! Your work is amazing!
Thanks so much, Kallathor! 😀
Your honestly my inspiration. I hope i can produce the level you can one day, just need to not worry so much about hitting perfection with my first few minis
Thank you! I think it's definitely wise to choose your battles, and just enjoy some loose, fun painting at times 😀
Great video. Thanks for the tips. It was neat to see your setup as well. God bless.
Thank you very much! 😊
I noticed in some of your older videos you were not using a wet palette but now you do. I would love a video from you talking about that transition or even some keys to using a wet palette. Thanks for all the great videos.
You're welcome! I can certainly include a section about the wet palette in a future video.. 😀
thanks, i have always used Windsor Newton brushes, but just splurged out and bought some Rosmary and Co on your recommendation. they Ship to New Zealand. so excited
Oh excellent, Mike! 😀
