Paints are one of those things that you know you don't need but when you see a brand you haven't tried or a color you like but from a diffent brand you just want to try them and getting one or two isn't satisfying enough Makes me feel better about my paint racks though
This was a fun video :)

I have spent a lot of time and money collecting various acrylics, oils, acrylic and alcohol inks, powder pigments, pastels and acrylic paint pens whilst preparing to setup my own hobby channel. But the thing I have invested the most in is creating my own line of paints, contrast paints, washes (oil and acrylic) and effects paints. My channel will be focused on budget DIY solutions for the hobby sphere. Creating my own paints allows me to perfect and tailor my paints to my liking.

I feel like Miniac used to very deliberately ape Alton Brown's style. Pulling out illustrative charts and giving a basic overview of the physical processes in things like airbrushing. I kind of miss that, but I guess there's only so much you can go over in that style.

Scalecolor heavy body paints are actually my favourite mini paints. I do a lot of colour mixing and they have the best magenta I've found. I'm honestly at the point where Id rather thicker paints. It just works better for how I paint. and for airbrushing I still go back to army painter paints.

I absolutely love the AK 3rd gen, Ive been transitioning to them from Vallejo Model Color, only downside is that the dropper part of the bottles almost always cracks and makes a mess. Some vibrant colors for the new Vallejo Game Color are pretty cool, and the Xpress line although small in range, is great and dries very mat. Vallejo also has a less known range, Mecha Colors, intended for airbrush, but the steel metallics work wonder by brush, their primmers are nice too, a bit satin. You have some hidden gems too in the Vallejo Airbrush paints, such as a Black Metallic.

    • @nameisbad
      @nameisbad Рік тому

AK 3rd gem, Kimera and scale 75 are all people need. I legit vouch by that. AK 3rd gen is like other stuff but ten times better. kimera is just very solid for what it does and scale 75 is different yet excellent when mastered, beyond anything imo. (scalecolor i'm talking about mainly).

Lovely. If you want something glorious to ad to you collection. Admittedly excessively difficult to get your hands on. Look out for - Rohrer & Klingner Antique Ink. I love using ScaleColor Artist paints. They have amazing matte finish, lovely colours, and they mix nicely. And the biggest advantage for me is that I don't have to shake them. I injured my hand a few years ago and if I overwork it, it hurts and I can't paint. Not having to shake bottles (and things like vibrating shakers are not any better for me) extends the time I can paint by a lot. So I almost exclusively paint with the ScaleColor Artist paints and don't mind having to thin them down. It helped me learn what consistencies I like for painting.

You sir, are not alone. I have at least 6 different paint ranges ( a few here , a whole range there etc.), and a large-ish double door closet filled with models( mostly Tank models as that was the last obsession). I will say , 3d printing has saved me from being buried under a "Tsunami of Grey". Now I just have to save up for a 10Tb RAID server to hold all the "Digital Grey" that I have.

Pretty much my same favorite Pro Acryl paints, except for ivory and magenta. I love sneaking in magenta when I can, especially in contrast to the jade. But ivory was the first bottle of their paint I needed to replace, I tend to use it instead of white 90% of the time I want white.

I have the full range but have barely touched them yet. The first try was a bust so went back to ProAcryl for now.
I need to sit down and work with them and learn to use them. My main goal with them was to actually use them thicker and go for more of a sketch/"painterly" style, but also need more practice for that.
Also they have some amazing colours!

I cannot second this enough. Scalecolor's Artist Smooth range are the only paints I own (including Warcolours, Citadel, Golden, AK, Vallejo, and Daler Rowney) that transfer/blend so smoothly right out of the tube that it's almost like I can feel it *through* the brush (in a good way!) They're like painting with butter (again, in a good way!) Their only downside is that you can't-or at least shouldn't attempt to-airbrush them.

    • @Scherdnr

I feel like I would get decision fatigue when trying to paint with this many paints. Which is why I've given away 90% of my paints. I kept my inks and artist paints for airbrushing, and a set of craft paints for dry brushing or terrain making. All of my other paints are artist oil paints. Oil paints have made me enjoy painting because acrylic paints were not super fun (if you aren't having fun painting, try oils. they are so much fun to paint with).

If you are like me and only have about 30min per day for painting, they hold up SUPER well on the wet palette. I load my palette for the week on Monday, and by Sunday, they are just the right consistency for those final glazes. No other brand comes close in this regard. It also helps that they mix well due to the limited pigments.

I have GW and Vallejo Game / Model and AK Interactive. I love those 3 for sure. Tamiya Clear Red for classic blood effects.

Yeah, the only thing w/Tamiya highlighting like that is they are based in a different substrate, so that can sometimes create odd, unwanted effects depending on what you paint them onto... that and if you need to strip, it can create a bit of a quagmire.

So glad to see I am not the only one with a horde of paints on my desk. I thought I was bad with 356 paints and counting. It’s so bad I use the app “Model Colors”on my iPhone so don’t buy doubles. Works with my tracking my pile of shame too! 😂

Awesome video, and I just bought the AK pastel set of six, cant wait to use one, thanks for the tips on the others. It's a pity or not that some are not sold over here in the UK, but hey it's the hobby we are in.

Hi I'm Vin and also a paint hoarder. I have hundreds, and hundreds of paints. And funnily enough our opinions are very similar, but I personally adore the Scale 75 range, and the speed paint 2.0 range. But my personal favorites are Ak 3.0 and Proacryl.

Nice, I use a mix of Vallejo model color, Pro-Acryl, Citadel contrast, Valleoj metal color, Daller-Rowley inks, and a little Citadel.

I also have a number of paints that is somewhat overwhelming. I find getting myself to focus on using a single line to learn that brand's strength is really difficult. I mix them into my lines I'm confident with, but that eventually pulls me back to my regular paints. Is there a method to testing new colors to ensure you use what you bought? I also find some just will never be used and I'll need to donate them if I won't use them and can free up space for those I do.
Vallejo, Reaper MSP, Scale 75, and Citadel are my go to. AP, contrast and speed paints, p3, and warcolor are ones I tend to avoid.

I barely buy new paint sets. I'm painting now with Scale 75 for many years. Two years ago I upgraded to some of their artist colors. But I'm thinking about changing to AK 3rd gen, but I'll wait until I could test some final colors of the Ultracryl range.

the old hex citadel paints were the best paint bottles. Bit of bluetac on top and they made the best painting handles, and the dried out paint meant the top was firmly sealed down so there was no chance of it ever opening and your mini falling off the top

I'm very space limited, so I'm quite militant about purging paints that have dried out or I haven't used in a long time.....usually.
Sometimes (probably against my better judgement) if I have 2 pots of somewhat similar shades that are almost out, I'll just combine them into a new shade and clean out one of the droppers for use with another paint, adding a little acrylic medium to pad it out a bit. Does that always turn out well? Not really but I think it's better than holding on to the last few drops.

I have 2 AK paints, Saddle Brown and Medium Rust. I bought the crackle medium in hopes of using it with the Medium Rust to make crackling rust effects on some of my robot minis. I haven't figured out how to do that and there are no tutorials on this specific crackle medium. I have watched tutorials on other crackle mediums, they didn't work. I have contacted AK about it, after 2 years, they haven't gotten back to me. I have put the medium down, let it dry, paint the rust over it. I have put the medium down and painted over it while the medium was still wet. I have done both, but the rust first. I have mixed the medium and the rust together in different ratios. I have thinned the rust in different ratios, I have thinned the medium in different ratios. I have done all combinations of all of those, I have not been able to get it to make crackling rust effects. I've even googled how to use this exact crackle medium, no results for this specific medium. Do you have any idea on this, Ninjon?
