Freeze Dried Chicken And Gravy Meal In A Mylar Bag MRE Ep102

  • Shredded slow cooked chicken smothered in homemade gravy, served with mixed vegetables and chicken stuffing. For dessert we have creamy butterscotch pudding. All freeze dried in my HarvestRight freeze dryer. My goal in making these Meal In a Mylar Bag MRE's is to create a complete meal that can be easily reconstituted with just water. In an emergency situation SHTF or camping or just for a quick meal after work, all I have to do is grab a bag and some water. I will have a complete meal that includes a main course, desert and a drink ready in just a few minutes.

    Imagine eating a wonderful dinner like this and when shtf occurs and people are freaking out I'm looking for food wherever they can find it. I'm glad I live in a Countryside

    Thank you for all the info and good ideas you pass on to all of us. ..... It truly pains me to see you pack all the food up, then immediately open one of the bags. I appreciate, as I'm sure everyone does, you showing us how you prepare the food and we would be able to see that perfectly fine without you bearing the cost of losing your storage bags for the rehydration part.

    I would put the gravy and veggies In with the meat it’d be faster and more convenient if things really go down.

    Add the excess water from the chicken to the stovetop dressing for a richer flavor

    I am so glad you did the stuffing! It is one of the things I have been wanting to try most. I am doing a bunch tomorrow with very high hopes! And also, the pudding is a great idea and I will be trying some of that as well. Keep up the good work!

    Great process and gave me some ideas for when my FD arrives! I have wanted to make MREs for camping and easy SHTF situations, so this was perfect.

    The metal tray is an excellent idea as it would help hold in the heat

    I may have missed this in the video. What thickness is the mylar bags being used and do they have to be designated as MRE bags that state they will withstand boiling water? I am so making this meal for storage. Looks delicious..

      It has been so long since I recorded this. In general if I am going to rehydrate with boiling water I use a 7 mil bag. If using cold or cool water (like pudding) I use the cheapest ziplock mylar bag I have available. Hope this helps

    Looks great! I am thinking though that if you are going to put the gravy on the chicken, why didn't you just add the gravy in with the chicken when you packaged it in the first place? It would save a bag and an oxygen absorber. Thanks for sharing!

      Of course you are correct, I just liked the idea of pouring gravy over the chicken, also reconstituting the chicken with lots of water then pouring off the excess seems to get great results for me.

      @@JohnInBibs I agree with your method. I was just wondering, will the oil from the chicken in your gravy be good for long term storage? I am new to this but I have read so much about not having oil in your storage. Can you help please? I am southern and I like how you do your meals.

      @@bfliptastic7477 After cooking the chicken in the crock pot, I placed it in the refrigerator over night, I then skimmed off the solid fat from the stock and used the remaining stock for the gravy. You are correct, oil is your enemy with long term storage. I try to be very careful with it. As you watch my videos you will see that it is a concern for me at all times.

    You used a food sealer to get the air out and seal the bag? Do you still put in o2 absorbers?

    Hi John - we ordered a FD (due to receive mid August). A quick question (I hope) of the FD accessories/extras you have what would you recommend?

      The silicone molds I use quite a bit. Both the bite size squares and the single serve rectangles (like used in my cereal video)

    John, how did you make your gravy? I heard you say, but how much did you use to fill a tray?

      wow, that is a good question, I just drained the liquid that was in the crockpot into the saucepan. I didn't measure it but I added a tsp of chicken bullion and then mixed a slurry of flour and water. Sorry I just eyeballed it
