I bet if you pour it in a trough they will drink the liquid and it will help fill them up even more and reduce the amount of watering too. When I fermented scratch grains that was what happened. Kinda like what you would do with pigs. They drink the " slop" and it fills them up.
Yea they definitely do that I would like some kind of feeder trough for the feed to keep it off the ground more
I simply use a piece of plastic roof gutter and nail it onto the wall, up about a foot. It's easy to reach, but too narrow to get into or even onto it.@@onceuponatinyfarm
@@onceuponatinyfarm you can use simple bowls, plastic or zink. 1.50 dollar each even here in the expensive tropics. Or you cut plastic bottles and use the bottum.
How do you ferment
These chicken feed videos are SO HELPFUL!! Love the idea of fermentation
Glad you like them!
I commented on your other video. I make my own food too. I've never fermented the feed. I freeze my food, let it thaw for a day in fridge. My flock goes crazy for it
That’s a cool idea I might have to try that too 👍
I also ferment my feed... you will use 1/3 less grains because fermenting makes the grains puffed with the water. Its healthier for the chickens because they are able to absorb more nutrients from the grains.. I also supplement with rice and beans a couple times a week. I will now ferment the rice and beans as well. Great tip! I also add a little kelp, acv, molasses, moringa powder and herbs to the ferment mix. Health & Happiness to you. Life, Love & Peace to All. 💚🌻🐥
You can also do a maggot bucket. Put holes at the bottom of a bucket and a chunk of meat inside. Maggots fall out of the bottom of the holes.
I plan to make one soon! Thanks for the tip
I know this is 3 months old , but I have a suggestion Instead of throwing that awesome fermented food & liquid on the ground , pour it into a container , so the all that nutrition that's in the water won't be wasted on the ground . Believe me they will eat & drink it all !
We have about 100 chickens & I ferment their layer feed in water with cooked beans & rice or pasta along with
kitchen scraps for 3 days . They all love it & eat every bit of it . We use shallow rubber animal feed / water tubs for the fermented food & their water . In the Winter , if their water freezes you can easily pop out that giant ice cube & refill the tub with water .
I also save all their egg shells , rinse them out , dry them in the sun , then grind them in my Nutri Bullet . I pour & stir some of this natural calcium into their fermented feed about once a week or more often for extra nutrition . The shells are absorbed & digested by them much better than leaving them in halves or large pieces .
Thanks for the comment. I actually just did this again but poured all the liquid in a bowl for them and they ate it all. Definitely going to keep doing that from now on! How much do you have to cook at once to feed that many birds? Right now I’m only at 12 birds. But that’s awesome
@@onceuponatinyfarm , I don't really measure it . The last I did , I actually cooked about a gallon of dried kidney beans , then added rice & pasta . That got divided up between 3 buckets with about 2 1/2 gallons of wet laying mash . I have been digging out & going through some old dried beans , etc . I actually pressure canned some without salt for them for later .
@@ellenfisher6341 awesome thank you
What about when you first get baby chicks?
@@allthingspossible4569 , I personally have never given it to baby chicks . I would think they should have the chick starter because it has the nutrients in it to get them off to a good start . They probably couldn't properly digest the beans .
Love what you're doing! Just a tiny bit of advice that I learned, don't use tap water because it has chlorine and chemicals that kill the ferment or keep it from fermentation. If you have a good filtered water or rainwater that would be perfect. If you have trouble with fermentation try this. So glad you're doing this and your birds look beautiful. 🙂
Thank you so much! I do have a really good filter on my hose to remove most of that yucky stuff from the water that I also use for watering the garden. We also use a Berkey for our drinking water. Nothing like clean water 👍
How about the cham trail it's going on and on the sky is ful of chamicals ?
@@kathyhirsch379 cant do anything to control that just try to focus on what we can do to live our best lives
I have a well not city water so this is perfect for me
@@onceuponatinyfarm
The chlorine and chloramine from city water kill bacteria. You can only filter them out with carbon.
I'm so happy you did this follow up, I appreciate your breaking it down 🐓👍🌱Blessings 🙏
Appreciate that!
Hi we are Greenacres Homestead in Kempner Tx and have 42 chickens, 3 Guineas, 7 ducks and 2 geese. So we do go through alot of feed. My question is do you feed your chickens this feed once or twice a day? I know some folks feed their chickens twice a day and some once. We have always due to we free range only free ours once a day but they do also get our kitchen scraps. Anyway thanks for the video we really enjoyed it and ❤ the little one children are a blessing from God.
I usually feed once a day and give them black soldier fly treats later in the day. I haven’t been making this rice and beans mix lately because I’ve been too busy with other things so I’ve been buying too much feed and it’s way too expensive!
@@onceuponatinyfarm thank you for the reply we already do the fermenting of our chicken scratch feed and that's been working fine.
Thanks for doing the math, i have 5 birds so I’ll do half of your calculation, very helpful. I can get dry beans and rice much more affordably then layer feed which my birds don’t seem that interested in. Ty ty! I enjoy watching the girls forage in parts of my garden, just brought in wood chips, etc etc, they are 4 mos and 3 out of 5
just started laying early!!❤
Awesome thank you
You could also buy in bulk like at Costco, and save even more money on the beans and rice
I think your math is quite a bit off. If he feeds 2 cups of rice and 2 beans a month then thats 60 of each for a total of 120 cups of rice and beans. So just do what you said but x 2
You might be right!
The math was incorrect
Kidney beans or pinto beans
Thanks for this upload, we're new chicken owners & are free ranging. I will deffinetly be doing some fermenting now
Awesome!
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing! I sprout field peas and lentils for my flock but havent tried fermenting. I will definitely try this. My girls dont get to free range due to dogs and predators so i still feed a complete feed but this would be a great treat for them! I also feed meal worms and bsf larvea and they get garden scraps too
I don’t free range mine either because of the same reasons and most because they destroy my garden when they sometimes sneak out of their run lol
If 40 chickens needs 2 cups rice and 2 cups beans daily, on a 30 day time, that is 60 cups rice and 60 cups beans. Not bad
Hello, Thank you for sharing this info. Wanted to point out that perhaps you would need more homemade feed if your chickens aren't freeranging like "No Place Like Home"'s chickens are? They said their's eat bugs and greens throughout the day, as well. Just a thought.
Also, consider purchasing 40 lb bags of whatever beans/grains you want from your local feed store, instead of the grocery store. SO MUCH CHEAPER!
Yeah you’re absolutely right. I always keep grain mixes on hand too and like the idea of giving them free choice of grains and rice and beans, along with food scraps and black soldier fly larvae. If they have access to all of that it starts to sound like they’re spoiled and living the good life!
very informative, taught me im feeding my chickens waaaay to much lol i do have 26 chickens 2 turkeys n four ducks
Don’t worry I definitely over feed my chickens too and whenever they see me now they act like they’re starving haha they’re spoiled
Try sprouted seeds.
Great video!! Thank you. May I suggest putting a big rock in their water pan - won't tip and will help keep it cooler in winter, warmer in summer! ☺️ 💚 🌻
Ah! Brilliant idea thank you they knock it over every day 👍
@@onceuponatinyfarm I use 5 gallon buckets with little metal watering cups screwed into the side. Let me know if you want the links. Works great, only need to fill once a week. I add a little DE powder and deters mosquitos and bacteria... Chickens and cats love it. 💚🌻

Thank you for the rock tidbit!!!
This is pretty neat. We've fermented aramanth for chickens, but this might be a game changer.
Never tried amaranth will have to try that as some point
For years I have always bought at least a half a year to a year's supply of the Egg Layer Pellets and All Flock Feed for my mix of chickens, ducks and guineas. I also feed whole corn. They have free range all day. I've always had plenty of eggs. So last year when everyone was having problems with their birds laying I still had feed from the year before and tons of eggs. Luckily I only bought 150 lbs of feed last month instead of stocking up like I usually do. Since then my birds will only eat the corn and keep leaving the store bought feed and acting like they are still hungry. Egg production has gone to if I am lucky 2 eggs a week from a flock of 25 chickens. I have a mix of Lentils, Brown Rice, Peas, and Pinto Beans in my crock pot as I write this. I don't know what's going on with the feed but if my birds don't like it and I have to buy eggs I won't be buying it anymore! I actually had to buy eggs last week! Thanks for the video and information!
I’m with you, it’s the worst feeling having to buy eggs when you have a flock in your backyard!
@@onceuponatinyfarm- The worst was we just butchered a hog and had fresh bacon with store bought eggs! My husband saying "this is a sin"!
This is so helpful, I only have 4 chickens they are very healthy and happy but this is much better than store bought feed. I buy a 50 lb bag of locally produced feed for $33 so this is much cheaper. I am using split peas and rice I hope to ferment them as well that's a great idea!! Thank you for your video
Thanks so much
Thank you for letting us know
Why cook it first? Why not soak them to the point of sprouting, then roughly grind it up , then let them ferment.
By soaking and sprouting these you increase the nutrients by up to 800%. Just asking , no criticism intended
I wanted to do that but from what I read about beans they still need to be cooked to remove some toxic things from them that could harm the birds
@@onceuponatinyfarmyes, it’s in order to remove the lectins!
@@debrasaints3809 yes thank you
Lavender Orpingtons! Fancy!
They get huge! Love them
Have you ever thought about sprouting the beans?
New to your channel just subscribe today loving your information about the chickens and feeding them healthy we’re gonna get chickens in the spring for the first time ever so this is really interesting to me just one question or one comment on fermenting. I do fermenting a lot for myself and my husband I’m not sure if you’re using well water or city water but if you’re using city water and it’s got chlorine in there it can kill your ferment so you would want to at least let it sit for 24 hours the water to get rid of the chlorine but if you’re using well, water or creek, water or whatever, then not a problem just just an observation enjoying your channel.
Thanks so much for being here! Good luck with your chickens! We do have city water but we have a berkey water filter that removes all that yucky stuff and we have a filter on our hose to remove chlorine as well. 👍
Thanks for sharing
You bet!
I love to feed a healthy supplements of veggies kale spinach bean everything is so healthy no junk foods ever . Fruits free range flock of 30 Eggs a babies only no meat birds .
Same here and we can grow most of those things too so it’s a money saver
Today’s lunchtime was squash cucumber organic celery green apples and oregano with parmigiana cheese to give it a little bit of smells ❤
50 lb bag organic feed 16 percent 17 bucks cheaper in bulk an even cheaper from the amish, feed my 6 for over a month so it's up to
Can you ferment the rice and beans without cooking them?
I believe you can do that with rice but I’m pretty sure you need to cook the beans still for the chickens but I could be wrong.
What is an insta pot. Never heard of one.
We use a Ninja Foodie. It’s a very versatile oven, slow cooker, air fryer, and pressure cooker all in one. It even has a dehydrator setting. Here’s a link: amzn.to/44uWrYx
can you ferment fresh rice and beans or does it have to be cooked?
I wondered the same thing and I think you can ferment uncooked rice but from what I understand beans still need to be cooked because there’s something toxic in them that needs to be removed in the cooking process so it doesn’t harm the birds.
I would soak, sprout them first and fermenting them with a starter.
I live in Florida, can I still keep the feed in my shed? It won’t go bad? It’s really hot outside. Thank you.
@@kimberlymiller8988 I wouldn’t! I would keep it refrigerated or freeze daily portions!
Thank you for the information. Each of the cup is how many pounds?? Because I don't know the size of your cup
I’m not sure how many pounds it was I just filled up to 2 cups in the glass jars
so you Ferment rice and beans for 3 days with water after cooking them ?
Yes
Hopefully this isn't all they're getting
Nope they get black soldier fly larvae and lots of veggies and food scraps from the garden
