The best cloud tutorial I have ever seen. I have been trying to paint similar clouds and getting frustrated each time. I think your techniques will help. I can't wait to work on it tomorrow. Thank you very much.
Oh wow, you are so amazing !! I’ve never used oil paint (and I don’t paint) but after watching your video ONCE I gave it a try and the clouds look like clouds and look sooooo lifelike it’s ridiculous. With very little effort and in a very short time (10 minutes) when I stepped back to have a look it literally took my breath away... Thank you so much for sharing you are great!!! Brigi
My favorite cloud tutorial! Thanks Devyn for this lesson and other tips and tricks you mentioned in this video. I use the make-up brush for liquid foundation and that brush does an excellent job on blending. And it's fairly inexpensive too. Give a make-up brush a try!
I watched several How-to-Paint-C:ouds videos. THis was my favorite. Detailed, professional results. Not to complicated or too simple; perects. For most paintings--as the artist suggests.
be the wind LOL love it. actually, excellent cloud tutorial. very informative and i like the fact that you explain your colors and brushstrokes. thanks!
Cloud whisperer. This video is amazing. Thank you for taking time to explain clouds in such a detail. It made me move from simple white clouds to magnificent realistic clouds envy of all other clouds.
Great cloud tutorial. I especially appreciated you showing how to print them from the perspective & direction you did, as I often find I have difficulty w/that. Thx a lot!
This really helped bring my clouds to a whole new level. I always used just white with no highlighting. I would never have thought of using pink in the mix.
So helpful & dope !!! Completely satisfying clouds on the first try. N I used an old eyeshadow brush bc I felt mine were too stiff 2 great effect thank u for saying "soft bristled" so i knew it'd make a difference !~
Thank you for providing this wonderful tutorial, the pace is just right, can I check with you is the background blue- wet or dry and what sort of blue have you used.
An excellent video, you have that magic touch though. I have found an Aquafine large fan brush for the blending is ideal for most things, and no fibres coming out. What make of white paint do you use, I have the water mixable type and I think the white sets too quickly, when it's time to blend it's not possible to use such a light touch. Great vid so thanks for doing them. U.K.
Aw, thank you so much! I don't even notice the dislikes. Everyone gets them. I pay no mind. :) Thank you for your kind words, though! I hope I can continue to be helpful!
This tutorial was great and made a lot of sense. I'm just wondering how long after you've painted the oils background for it to be dry enough for you to paint the clouds. Or did you have an acrylic background? :)
I'm so glad you liked it! :) The background was in oils, yes. Dry time will depend on the weather, but I think it took about 2 days to dry. Not too long! Just make sure you keep the background thin and it should dry quickly.
thank you for your video!!! I struggled with painting clouds & have watched many tutorials. You are an excellent teacher & your video finally helped me!!!!!❤
Fix that brush. Hold brush with hair pointed upwards. Put small drops of crazy glue at the base just where hairs meet the metal strap. Go with glue around the whole perimeter. Use VERY LITTLE glue in each step. Flooding with glue will make glue go towards the tip of hair and make the whole brush unusable. If needed repeat the whole thing but only after the crazy glue from the first round is fully dried. If in doubt about this way of fixing brushes then maybe build some confidence practicing on old or cheap brushes. Good luck.
Hi Devyn Samara, did you paint this on a dry background? pls. Can you make a video showing how to paint clouds for the main focus in the picture? I know you said these are not for that, thank you for this tutorial
Most helpful tutorial i have found on UA-cam for painting clouds. Big thanks. I've subscribed. Is that Mozart playing piano in the background or Beethoven ? Do tell ... i'd love to listen to it whilst i paint ...
I'm assuming that's acrylics. ....Can we achieve that with oil paints too..???...would like to see one with oil colours too...would the Technic be the same though?? Thanks ....cheers
Do we need to wait for paint to dry?? I keep mixing colors all of the place..I just start to paint haven't done in 20yrs lol I'm terrible now Thanks for help though..very inspiring..blessings
The sky should be dry before you begin, but you should be able to finish the clouds in one go. If your colors are traveling too much as you work, you might be using too much paint. Less is more. :) Good luck! I'm glad you're painting again!!
@@DevynSamara thanks so much..much I appreciate it..and yeh I'm glad I started painting too lool 🙋♂️ very rusty though, you imagine one thing and put another thing on canvas..I want EXACT THING!! not close enough..but it's all good and relaxing Blessings to you
Hi, Clara! For the sky, it's a 50/50 mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue with varying degrees of Titanium White. I think the ocean was more Ultramarine than a 50/50 mix, though. Might have put some green in it too, but I can't recall. :)
I'm not certain. This is all it says on the Bob Ross website, "The Bob Ross landscape brushes are special brushes made from natural bristles and shaped according to Bob's very precise specifications for the Bob Ross Wet-on-Wet Technique®. Remember, ordinary or synthetic brushes are not the same and can't create the same beautiful effects these will."

Thanks really this was really helpful! I am a total beginner. Are you doing this on a dry background? ( pretty sure you are) does this work better wet on wet?
I do it on a dry background. You could do it on a wet background if you'd like! I have before, but my only irritation with this method is that you blend so much for these diffused clouds that sometimes it can disrupt the gradient of blue you have "behind" the cloud. Plus, I had to make it a 2 step process (let it dry and come back to it) to really bring the whites out of the clouds. :) Thanks for your question!
@@DevynSamara thanks Devyn. Very kind of you to give me such a detailed answer. .. I will do this in 2 stages as you do . Love the tutorial. Keep them coming ...

A better brush used for blending is a blush brush used for make up. Its soft and doesnt shed.

QUESTION: After you use the soft big brush to swipe across your clouds, do you wipe it off after each time you use it?
I will wipe it off on a paper towel after several swipes. :)
Do you use any kind of medium to thin your paints? Would you mind sharing what you use? You make it look so easy. Thank you !
Not for this tutorial, no. I often do use the Winsor & Newton Painting Medium for a lot of my other work though. Good product!

Was the background dry already or was this wet on wet?
How do you indicate cloud distance
Do they overlap from above or from below
Hi, may i know if the blue background was totally dry before u can paint the clouds?
Yes, it was. :)
Very useful, thank you. Which color did you used for the sky and the ocean? Cobalt blue?
Hi, Clara! For the sky, it's a 50/50 mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue with varying degrees of Titanium White. I think the ocean was more Ultramarine than a 50/50 mix, though. Might have put some green in it too, but I can't recall. :)

Is this straight out of the tube or thinned?
Is the background already dry when you paint the clouds on it? Or can I paint the clouds while the blue's still a little wet?
good question! is it?
no matter how many cloud painting videos I watch, I always have trouble.

Can I do with acrylics exactly the same what you did?
I would think so, absolutely! I don't personally work in acrylics, but I would think it would work out just the same. :)

acrylics dry much faster and won't blend half as well as this.
