Karen is simply the best female vocalist ever. Her seemingly effortless range, phrasing, and timing. Her voice was an instrument, she understood her range and effect, and she never over-stated her role in a song. She could have been a diva, but chose not to be. I don't think we will come across someone like this in our lifetime. She makes me choke up, I almost weep at the sound, her resonant voice, her instinctive feel for sound. All this without training. My goodness,

Thank You Burt Bacharach! You gave us so many great songs! Thank You for asking Richard & Karen to do a medley of your hits for the charity event.
Love You Burt! We will always remember you and honor you and Hal.
    Rest easy handsome!
Thank You Richard for going into the studio and then recording this and putting it on an album. It's one of my favorite things that you and Karen did and of course did it better than the original artists. This clip is perfection in motion. Thanks for posting this great clip!

I think the most moving tribute I ever saw to Karen Carpenter was during an interview with Herb Alpert. It was on the CBS Sunday morning show. The interviewer asked about Carpenter and her work of Alpert, and in the middle of his response he completely broke down sobbing. He truly felt she was a phenomenal talent and still missed her after her death.

There are two female singers who stands above all the rest, it's Eva Cassidy and Karen Carpenter. They are both unique with a wonderful sense for timing and phrasing and with a remarkable range. I never get tired of listening to this woman!

There are many female singers that stand above the rest: Celine, Whitney, Olivia Newton-John, Sarah MacLaughlin, Helen Reddy, ABBA, Linda Rondstat, Katy Perry, P!NK, Cass Elliot, Julie Andrews, Diana Ross, Marilyn McCoo, Janis Joplin, Dolly Parton, and many more that are so great. But Karen really does stand at the very top of that spectacular list.

    Playing drums = difficult
Singing cleanly and soulfully = difficult
    Doing both = ridiculously difficult
    Ms. Carpenter, though, did masterfully.

Playing live piano at a concert level: Juuust barely within the range of humanly possible. Requires superhuman talent + 10+ years of daily multi-hour practice.
Singing harmony: Extremely difficult and something only few singers can do, even amongst good and talented singers.
Singing harmony with razor sharp precision of intonation, timing, sync with soulful lead singer, pristine enunciation, memorization of precise vowel sounds to get desired blend, all the while injecting your own sound and personality: Simply ridiculous.
Jazzy improvised piano soloing during concert: Don't even try it.
Memorizing 2 hours of intense piano intros, outros, solos, chords, and comp melodies and playing them note perfect in a hostile environment while your hands are shaking with nerves and you're directing a band and orchestra and trying to make eye and smile contact with an audience of thousands: Phhhht.
Doing all of the above simultaneously: Hahahaha....you're joking.
Richard Carpenter: Makes it look like he's playing a piano bar in your neighborhood.

I saw The Carpenters 4 times : early '71 in Denver, Summer of '72 in LA, '73 Anaheim Convention Ctr., & late '73 in Denver again--each time I was in awe of how much better--BETTER!!--Karen was in person. That voice was simply God's gift to us; it just breaks my heart to know how Karen was so hurt & self destructive, with her talent never being enough to hide the sadness. RIP, Karen --an Angel among us . Wolfsky9, 66 y/o

What a superb singer she was, with a God-given voice. I love the way she plays the drums while singing and looks completely natural -- it's not a gimmick, it's just what she does.
Some of these tragic, early deaths are hard to get over -- especially when listening to her in her prime -- it just sits there and hurts. What pointless self-destruction, sad beyond words...

Karen always thought of herself as a drummer who could sing. When the Carpenters started touring, the audiences complained that there wasn’t a focal point to the band because they couldn’t see her behind her huge drum kit (she was only 5’4”). She was always happiest and most at ease behind the drums...

Yes, I totally agree, the live sound is sooo great and historical. Richard feels that they were a recording act, that's what they were, that's what they did, that"s what they had to offer to the world, that"s their legacy and their product. He also wants us all to hear his work, which is the orchestration, the overdubbing, the orchestra, the envelope pushing recording quality. Richard doesn't want to see it, but they were also a spectacular live concert act, and Richard doesn't want to do it but it's important to preserve that to history as well.

I miss her more now that I am old enough to realize how wonderful and beautiful she was in a world that didnt understand her situation...I dated a girl that I thought was the prettiest girl I had ever seen and found out she was bulimic and worried that she would not be wanted if she gained weight...SHE WAS WRONG ... I STILL MISS HER ... And dont care about her weight

I don't blame your hyperbole. When I hear her I think the same thing even if I wouldn't allow myself to say it. It's just stunning the beauty of her voice, the facility and control and her musicianship. Just perfection. And that is awe-inspiring.

Listen to that sound that Richard put together to complement his sister's heavenly voice. And this is a rare chance to see Karen playing the drums. Incredible.

TQ "neroli8676" for this reliving of the Carpenters!!! I only hear them on vinyls in the late and mid 70's and when I relocate across the globe, my tapes all went GONE!!! This is awesome to see Karen at the drums and her beautiful voice once again. I pray she sings up there too....

I can't stop listening to this. Much better than the recording from the Carpenters original album with Superstar on it. Thank you so much!

Karen seemed visibly most at ease when she could play drums while singing and she could do both spectacularly well. An amazing talent sorely missed. It must have been very difficult to perform all those different songs in the medley at one sitting.

Not fair that Karen was taken away from us sooo early! She was a real giant of a talent of the 20th or any century!

Magnificent and miraculous as she was, she also had some great material to perform for us. Bacharach takes some beating.... This is a beautiful performance.
