1970 Baby here. As far back as I can remember her voice rings through the years. There is no equal. None can touch her. I was devastated when we lost her.
I was born in 80, and they were always being played somewhere. They were literally the soundtrack to the first ten years of my life. I immediately think back to the 80's when I hear The Carpenters. They were popular long after Karen passed. Man, her voice was beautiful.
They need to change the name to Music Hall of Fame. And since Dolly Parton and Donna Summer are in there why are the Carpenters not? They were a jazz trio before they went soft rock...Karen was a drummer too. They didn't just sing...they made a contribution to music and people still listen to them today. With at least 12 top ten hits they deserve their time to be honored...
I am 55...I am fortunate enough to have Carpenter's music as one of my earliest memories...I started a Carpenter's fan club in my college in the early 80's..
First class lighting, make up, camera work and direction, of course the BBC. Must have been a treat for the crew to have this band in the studio, way back in the seventies - when great music was still being made.
Their commitment to excellence is apparent, hours and hours of practice and the fact that they were both perfectionists. They don't make them like this anymore.
When I hear her sing “Superstar” with no electronics, no autotune, just the purest sound ever. I actually tear up at thought of her passing so young. God Bless you Karen and Richard!
this is amazing!Since I was a child i noticed this Band!Truely very important, true and human music!I love the voice and feeling from Caron!thx for this video!

I'm just sitting here shaking my head in amazement. Karen is still sorely missed 40 years later, that is evident in the comments, and I do want to say the whole group sounds flawless. What incredible talent, and especially given how young they were at the time of this concert! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this!
I'm glad that Karen Carpenter and Nat King Cole weren't born until the time that recording technology was developed. Those two incredible voices need to be preserved as long as our species exists.
man, I can't get around that voice of hers. it's almost surreal. dark and light at the same time, and the control she has over it is unreal. what a beautiful woman. always thought the carpenters were just some square act. now I'm mesmerized. funny.
me too! As a musician myself I only listened to music I could perform. Never took the time to listen to women sing. I'm glad I finally discovered how awesome she was. The best voice I ever heard.
As a young black youth bus to a white school in the early 70s i was put in the chorus class.. Years later im so happy to have fell in love with these songs in my teens and still today people are amazed when i say the Carpenters is in my top three all time.
I’m a singing drummer. What Karen is doing is extremely tricky. The trick is to concentrate on singing and let the drumming just happen. She’s the best I’ve ever seen at it.
I can sing playing guitar but I cannot playing the piano it’s so hard for me (not that I’m that good or anything mind you ) but I cannot imagine playing drums and singing. NO FN WAY, so cool you can do it …. She was amazing. Her live and recorded voice is almost the same too.
She considered herself a drummer (percussionist) first, and a singer second. From what I've read, she really disliked stepping out from behind the drums in the mid-70's. She loved drumming. Such a wonderful talent.
@@floramiles1365 From watching this only the Bacharach / David medley sounded like it came off the album, the rest were either sang live or as live as they could, a couple of songs in the set are not even on main albums, if at all.
A gift from God. As I have gotten older I have learned to appreciate the amazing qualities of her voice and the music. Having been born in 1963, this and so many other 70's songs are the background music of my life. I feel very fortunate to have lived during a time of incredible creativity and diversity in music. All the way up through the 90's and then it fell off a cliff.
born in 1965 and I completely agree with you. I quit listening to any new American or English language music right about 1990. But MAN! Didn't we have great music in Junior High School and High School too!? Kids today will never get it. My son and daughter in law were playing this "rap" crap in the car and I asked them if we could please just put some music on...they were "highly" offended. I'm sure you hear what I'm saying, brother!
The seventies gave us some wonderful music. The Carpenters, James Taylor, Carol King, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell ect. I think the eighties kind of sucked with a few exceptions, I think of the eighties as mainly one hit wonders and hair metal. The nineties gave us some incredible rock bands and then as you say, it went off a cliff. My mother used to say " there are only two singers in the world, one is Karen Carpenter and the other isn't".
Même plaisir , même état d esprit , même année , c'est une bonne étoile 🌟 , heureuse d être avec des personnes qui ont du goût sonore. Douces nuits à tout ceux qui nous ont laissé que du meilleur son. Merci
Anorexia is a deadly mental and physical nightmare to those that got strangled by its tentacles.. Karen Carpenter , you and your voice will never be forgotten and when i hear her songs on whatever device , I know it's her singing.... Unmistakable n sweet to the soul.. Rainy days and Mondays always get me down too... God bless you Miss...
Pamela Ruth Lee. I struggled with anorexia nervosa. Received help from a great doctor and God healed me. Pierce ,my fiance, Rip. Loved the carpenters. Miss and love you, darling.❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊
you have to deal with depression to be compelled to their music and the sad songs as much as i am. there is a lonliness to it, especially goodbye to love, but the song is so well written that it almost seems happy. in my life i feel what she went through because of mental illness. i dont wish it on anyone. but i will always love and miss karen.
I heard a music critic say that he thinks that one of the possible reasons why so many people have such a visceral response to Karen's singing is that it sounds like a mother singing to her child, it's an interesting theory, who knows? I guess the sad irony of that is that she never had any of her own children to sing to.
A month ago I lost the love of my life to ALS. We wre married in August of 1971. we loved the Carpenters , their music was so beautiful and so romantic. will never forget the joy they brought to us. I will always think of the love of my life when I hear their music. I wish all the best to all who enjoy their music. Peace and love
And to think she started singing almost by accident and really wanted to just play the drums. Her recording voice is one the greatest gifts given to the pop musical world.

My all time favourite female singer. Instantly recognisable and truly unique, her voice is powerful and deep, yet effortless and smooth. Always been amazed at her ability to hold a note. Karen makes what is very difficult look so easy. Part of what makes the 70's THE magical decade in music.
We are so fortunate to have this video of an authentic live performance by the Carpenters when they were at their peak in 1971. Karen at the peak of her loveliness and vocal talents and Richard at the peak of his creativity. It exhibits the perfection that they strove for in all of their pursuits, both live and recorded. The quest for perfection that ultimately lead to Karen's early demise. So lovely and such a shooting star.
sorry to burst your bubble, but this not a "live" performance. This was lip-synced with their studio recordings. But they are fabulous, and Karen was an exceptional drummer.
@@geoffallan3804 yes they did. You can see Richard at the keyboard, just barely sitting down in time, and the song starts, and his fingers are half to a whole second behind the recording. he manages to catch up.
I' don't have the words. Almost like a religious experience. God...how amazing she is. "Is" not was. She is ever present in our minds. She was the sound track of our lives. As I listened to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath with my friends, when I was alone I listened to Karen and loved every second. I wonder how some guy couldn't wrap himself around her and pull her out of the stupid thing that pulled her down.
I was both a Led Zeppelin fan and a Carpenters fan in high school in the early 70’s. I still am. I also agree with your last point. I know some of the details, but not all. Something was wrong that should have been fixable. She was unique in the music world. No one could take her place or even come close. It still hurts badly that she’s gone and it always will.
Yes, I've wondered the same thing, and I know Richard tried but back then little was known about Anorexia and even less about treatment. I don't think she fully realized how much she was loved and appreciated.
I've never heared any voice that so fully discloses the soul of a human being in a song. Karen ! You were, are and always will be among the best American treasures !
+James Line Richard's song stylings couldn't keep up with pop music trends, but Karen Carpenter would be as popular as any solo singer today. Karen wanted to collaborate with her brother, but like Taylor Swift, Christina Agullara & other artists she would hv thousands of song writers & musicians who would want to work with her. What composer wouldn't want that voice recording his/her music? Sadly, Karen rarely choose the songs she recorded. We know she liked all kind of music. Yes, I'm sure she'd hv been successful in any era in history!
Karen's voice live was as great as her recordings! -- the greatest female pop vocalist in history!!! -- Her voice was beautiful, lovely, strong and pure. She was very pretty in her young twenties, there was no need to have lost so much weight, if only she could have truly seen herself for how beautiful she really was! Richard Carpenter was a great pianist/keyboard musician, arranger, and back up vocalist -- he was the driving force behind the Carpenters. I will always remember & cherish the Carpenters!
Every time I hear Karen Carpenter's voice, I just shake my head. Simply gorgeous. A natural, unforced mezzo, as clear as a bell. There are plenty of hugely successful "singers" who don't even belong in the same room as Karen. Such a shame that she died so young, but so grateful that we have recordings so that we can still enjoy her talents.
she was going to a concert with her friend along with her. Her friend reported that Karen was singing in the back of the car at a very low level and this is the same level she sang. There was some sort of magic between Karen's voice and the microphone.
Thank You! Sweet memories of my youth & the beautiful music from Karen & Richard Carpenter! The Carpenters should definitely have been in the Hall Of Fame by now in 2024! May she RIP. Her brother deserves this honor while he is still alive. Hope someone can make this happen for them! 🎉❤🌹🙏🌹🙏💗😇💙🎵🎤⭐️⭐️🌹🙏🌹🙏🎁🎁👍♥️🎉
This year completed 40 years since the world lost the greatest singer with a voice and the most refined and tuned timbre that I've known on planet earth, I haven't seen a tribute to this singer Who, in addition to singing, was a person of integrity, true and delighted with her simple way of living
I am a singer. And many times I research singers from the past. And when I heard Karen Carpenter, I fell in love with it, my heart raced. And knowing that she is no longer here is a lot of pain. 😢
There never has been, and never will be, a more perfect vocalist! Karen you wiped the floor with Streisand et al! Loved you so very much!! And what a phenomenal drummer!!
What a voice! From the moment she sang the first notes of Superstar you can feel how she controls her diaphragm and tonal quality. Right emotional emphasis at every note and at the time of this live performance she was still 20 years of age only! Compare that with the voices of today, she was a true artist! This recording is more than 50 years old yet it felt like 'only yesterday'. I've been a fan since 1974 but I'm falling in love with her all over again. Thanks so much for sharing this clip!
They should have allowed her to continue to sing while playing the drums. Playing the drums was her passion. She never wanted to be front and center singing without her drums. Look how much happier she was-Even her voice was “happier”! They caused her anorexia and bulemia, which ultimately caused her death.
Her voice is simply angelic. Such a purity. The greatest singer I’ve ever heard. Love the Bacharach medley. Richard is also amazingly talented. So sad she is not with us today.
Two people with extraordinary talent created something that I don’t think will ever be equalled. Perhaps under-appreciated at the time, their music endures and is finally given the recognition it truly deserves.
Love seeing Karen with a big smile while on the drums. Even after the melancholy big hits, she always say "Thank you" and flashed a big smile. Glad she had some joy and fun :)
Her voice is timeless ~ I loved her voice as a kid and still listen to her all the time. This live performance demonstrates just how talented she was both as a drummer and vocalist. Won’t be another like her or the harmonies she & her brother made together.
If I could bottle up one song from this concert & re-live it over and over : it would be 'Superstar.' She delivers it flawlessly with such emotion and clarity every inch as perfect as the studio recording. That was just how good she was . Hard to believe she was just 21 when this was recorded.
This is the best version of Superstar. Karen is deep in the song--you can see it even in her hand movements. She really embraces the sadness of what Leon Russell wrote here. A brilliant performance.
I saw her in concert in 1974, front row seat. Her voice was so pure and beautiful. Put on a great show. So sad she had her demons and died way too young.
Impossible not to get emotional. The Carpenters at their best. Karen Carpenter, no one will ever take your place. Your voice moves me to this day. When I listen (And When He Smiles / For All We Know) it becomes impossible not to cry with her eternal sweet voice. I always pray to God for you. Love you forever.
Wonderful Singer and Drummer! Beauteful Voice! My Dad put me to ear the Carpenters songs! Only these days i understud that moment in my life! Miss you DAD!
That is perhaps their very best song ever. It is what I think of as their best and most enduring. Even when I hear it today It captivates me as well. I have never researched details of the song. You could guess that the character in the song was fantasizing but it seems to be written as though they really did have an encounter. Its all just a song I know.
I grew up in Downey and Karen and Richard would drive by the house often and Karen would always smile a huge smile and wave at us on our bicycles. Richard always drove and Karen would have her feet up on the dash of The Carpenter's Van....that was on Cedartree Rd in Downey Northside....1969-1982.... The best ol days.....miss you Karen ...♥️

@@EricUnderwood-v2x Well, my sister & I resided near the corner of Beverly Blvd & Rosemead Blvd, which by traveling south three or four miles, became Lakewood Blvd, then if you quickly veer to the east as soon as you hit the Downey city limit, one would enter into "The Carpenters Land"! To even deeper dive (LIKE IF ANYBODY OUT THERE EVEN REALLY GIVES A DOUBLE-HEADED, RAT'S HOOT!) my sister & I attended El Rancho High in Pico Rivera, where Rich & Karen, attended Downey High. To take it a step further (AS I BORE READERS TO A STATE OF UTTER DEATH WITH MY LAME HISTORY!) my sister & I attended Rio Hondo Community College in North Whittier Hills, where Rich & Karen, infamously, attended CA State University Long Beach. NOW, THOSE TWO COLLEGES WERE A GOOD 20 MILES APART! Interesting Note: My sister sang in BOTH Jr. & Sr. High School choirs and in small vocal quartets & quintets...AND...she was a natural "1st Contralto", similar to Karen's range. Me? To answer your first inquiry, I studied Radio Production, Broadcasting & Media in college and from 1979-2019 worked in the Los Angeles area radio markets for a great deal of independent radio stations to larger conglomerate national radio networks. I've been "retired" for about 5 years, as of 2024...just in case any DANG defense lawyer is reading this reply. (...no further comment on that...) Anyways, all of us in Pico Rivera knew Rich & Karen lived just literally a few minutes down south the boulevard, but, ya know, Pico & Downey were really "middle class' neighborhoods (for the most part) and everyone kinda respected their own "spaces & privacy". While in college, one of my radio buddies, literally lived a couple blocks away from their family house; I think I passed it a couple times...but again...when you're practically "neighbors", it's really, no big dealio...and it really shouldn't be. To answer your last question (DANG! I AM SO OVERLY POMP & CIRCUMSTANCE, SELF-ABSORBED HERE!!) Later in life, while residing in the Orange County area of Huntington Beach/Bolsa Chica, I just "magically" decided to use that name as my own You Tube Channel, "BolsaChicaRadio" as if you click on over there, you can see, view & hear a PLETHORA of both broadcasting vignettes, promotional radio interviews, self-produced concert material, as well as re-masters I worked on in the early years of You Tube...because THAT'S HOW FREAKIN' OLD I AM!!! Interestingly enough, one of my EARLIEST UPLOADS is a re-master of THE CARPENTERS "TICKET TO RIDE" Music Video, which Rich had the audio updated for the Carpenter Video Collection that came out in the 90's, I believe. The original version that Rich & Karen recorded, was in 1969, but was later re-tracked & overdubbed, by the request of Herb & Jerry, in 1973, I believe. What I did was to take the "ORIGINAL AUDIO" track from 1969 and re-lay it on the video timeline. Rich has yet to put a "STRIKE" on that re-mix, as of yet! The tone of Karen's drums on that original 1969 session was VERY BRIGHT & JAZZY, where the later version had a much more "Pop/Adult Contemporary" sound to it. I prefer the earlier version; Karen's drums sounds WAY MORE like the way she JAMMED in those early videos of "The Dick Carpenter Trio"! OK, enough BLAB outta me! BolsaChicaRadio
You can say whatever you wish about the music, but Karen Carpenter's vocals are out of this world. This performance is spectacular!!!! Gone way too young...
A voice from heaven and her brother just happens to be a genius as well! Amazing songs, amazing musicianship, arrangements. and performances - timeless and ahead of their time and ours.
In listening VERY CLOSELY & VERY INTENTLY, a good portion of the numbers here were INDEED performed LIVE as can be, but there a few (that were very multi-tracked on the studio/album version) that were presented here in "Playback Form". BolsaChicaRadio
@@BolsaChicaRadiothe channel “wings of Pegasus” ran her live performances through some software and found not only does she sing live but she actually hits some better live than on the records. They called her 1 take Karen. Look up the video, it is truly amazing.
Karen also had RANGE, without "lumps and dips" From Low Alto to well up into soprano country, she was SMOOTH. And then there was the dynamic and tonal control Being a drummer also gave her a brilliant sense of timing, knowing when to "lead" or "lag" a beat. And with a brother / accompanist like Richard, things were destined to be very polished, but NOT "audio wallpaper".
No makeup or sparkly fake crap.. just God given talent and innocent beautiful voice of Karen Carpenter.. feel lucky to be alive when she was alive on this earth
Awe the 70's. I was 9 in 1971 and I listened to Karen all through my school years and beyond. The Carpenters were the first concert I attended with front row seats, I was 14 yrs old. I had their music on vinyl and played them on my turntable in my bedroom.. Her voice still moves me.
Karen Carpenter's voice has a comforting melancholic tone unlike any other. Richard Crapenter has to be praised for his musical arrangements and deep understanding of Karen's voice. I still light a candle on the anniversary of her death which shocked me and so many others. The Carpenters sang some beautiful songs, one of which, You're The One, I played as a final goodbye to my dear partner Maurice who died suddenly aged only 46. We both loved the music of the Carpenters and I am grateful that the Carpenters provided a song that said everything I needed to say in that final goodbye.
My God, my God, my God - what a voice. I've never heard such a beautiful, soul-penetrating, and natural voice as hers. I've gone through quite a few "reaction" videos where people comment on what they hear. For most of them, they're young people and it is the first they've ever heard of the Carpenters. The best part is in the first 10 seconds of hearing her voice. Every single one of them react as if they've just heard an angel. You visibly see a change come over their faces right when they hear her voice. One even cried. I put her right up there with Judy Garland as one of the best female American voices of all time.
Judy was amazing as a teenager in the Wizard of Oz, then slowly digressed as the years went by. For that reason I wouldn't put her in the same Class as Karen.
@@bruschmidt9943 Judy was a legend. She lived what she sang, from her gut, always, her heart on her sleeve, every tragedy in her life for all to see. She was only 47 when she died....only 15 years older than when Karen died at 32. I grew up with Karen, I have loved her since I was 9. There is no other voice like hers, not to mention the unfathomable....singing and playing drums together like she does! The two cannot be compared in any way. I love them both and I perform them both. Look up "A Cottage For Sale" from the Judy Garland show 1963-64. It has brought a tear to my eye more than once. There was only one season of The Judy Garland Show, and it is a priceless archive, so many incredible performances. I am so grateful there are priceless archives of so many of our incredible artists from the last century.
I was 6 years old in 1971 living in Puerto Rico. Did not understand one word of english....and all I wanted was to hear their music and Karen's silky voice. Fast forward.....now living in Long Beach Ca..not far from their home town of Downey....and I still have that same admiration for Richard and Karen. God I wish Karen was still around...she was just a shinning positive soul. Thanks for the video.
Wish she loved herself as much as we loved her, she would still be around to sing for us, just so sad what she done to herself for no reason, so so so very sad

I was the same but now I've fallen in love with the purity of her pitch perfect singing.
Rich was nowhere near perfect. When it came to synchronizing his own piano work on

She makes it so simple...but it isn't. A great artist.
Did they really sing live in this show? I just watched the 1974 Japan concert which was definitely live. Here I am not THAT sure though.
@@floramiles1365 From watching this only the Bacharach / David medley sounded like it came off the album, the rest were either sang live or as live as they could, a couple of songs in the set are not even on main albums, if at all.
Thank god for technology. Long after Karen left this world we can still listen to her amazing legacy. Rest in peace beautiful angel.
Beautiful and mega-talanted Karen and Richard.

No singing voice of the last 100 years has conveyed loneliness, loss, and depression in so heartbreakingly beautifully a fashion.
elliott smith and nick drake. IMO
Yes, but that is why Top of the World is one of their most popular songs, their best feel good song.
you have to deal with depression to be compelled to their music and the sad songs as much as i am. there is a lonliness to it, especially goodbye to love, but the song is so well written that it almost seems happy. in my life i feel what she went through because of mental illness. i dont wish it on anyone. but i will always love and miss karen.
Haven't stopped loving her for a second in 45 years. Never will.
Their sheer musicality is just startling. Two huge talents. And of course that gorgeous, unique, soulful voice.

Nobody in 2024 sounds this good live. I'm speechless.
Soo right❤
There’s nobody even close!
sorry to burst your bubble, but this not a "live" performance. This was lip-synced with their studio recordings. But they are fabulous, and Karen was an exceptional drummer.
@@blitzebill Did they lip sync the mistakes, too?
She still IS..through Internet...
Now she sings in Heaven. ❤ Amen
+Константин Тер-аванесов I agree. Can you imagine Carpenters arriving on the scene today? I cannot.
Very well said, my friend, very well said indeed!
Karen Carpenters at the age of 21 years old has amazing voice of the century, she's been imitated around the world but never duplicated.
it's incredibly hard to play drum and sing at the same time and she did it effortlessly. SO MUCH RESPECT!
I heard them live in 74 and her vocals were incredible live!
Not only her voice, but her drumming ability. What a talented person. What a beautiful soul that resided within her.
Never thought The Carpenters were cool back in 1971. Now I think they the coolest band in the world!

This is how I chose to remember Karen Carpenter..seemingly healthy,at the top of her game..singing like an angel..
Karen & Richard Carpenter typify the meaning of "a touch of class". They were the hearts & the souls of 2 exquisite masterpieces.
A voice straight from heaven
I get chills every time I hear them.
she was going to a concert with her friend along with her. Her friend reported that Karen was singing in the back of the car at a very low level and this is the same level she sang. There was some sort of magic between Karen's voice and the microphone.
Thank You! Sweet memories of my youth & the beautiful music from Karen & Richard Carpenter!

That voice deserves a spot in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

Watching her play the drums and sing so beautifully at the same time gives me chills. A phenomenal talent gone way too soon.
They should have allowed her to continue to sing while playing the drums. Playing the drums was her passion. She never wanted to be front and center singing without her drums. Look how much happier she was-Even her voice was “happier”! They caused her anorexia and bulemia, which ultimately caused her death.
But she's not even playing in this video, it's obvious

She appears much more comfortable behind the drums as she was obviously very good and from watching their videos.

I hear a taste of bossa nova in The Carpenters.
Wholeheartedly agree, she sings live in this concert and it is sublime. I love hearing Karen sing live.
spot on
I saw her in concert in 1974, front row seat. Her voice was so pure and beautiful. Put on a great show. So sad she had her demons and died way too young.

Karen also had RANGE, without "lumps and dips" From Low Alto to well up into soprano country, she was SMOOTH. And then there was the dynamic and tonal control
Being a drummer also gave her a brilliant sense of timing, knowing when to "lead" or "lag" a beat. And with a brother / accompanist like Richard, things were destined to be very polished, but NOT "audio wallpaper".

I heard her voice for the first time when I was 12 years old. I listened and listened to it again and again, whose voice was it, why? It's so beautiful. Her voice spelled out to the people. From God, your voice enters the hearts of the listeners. It's more than words, how beautiful it is.
Karen’s voice was that of a seraph-perfect, flawless, superb, exquisite and certainly not earned by humanity.
Every time I have one of those rainy day’s and Monday’s - I listen to Karen and her voice brightens my day and lifts my spirit! Thank you Karen and Richard for your Music.
