My favorite line in this song. Hit me hard and stuck with me from the first time I ever heard it when I was just a young teen, because it resonated with me so much. Unfortunately I have always struggled with indecisiveness and letting life happen to me rather than consciously making choices, especially difficult ones. In that way these lyrics have kind of haunted me all my life as a sort of self fulfilling prophecy.

This is one of my favorite solos to play actually because, if you even are listening to Geddy or Neil or even think of what the bass nor drums are doing, they will literally throw you entirely off if you do.
Alex known for his very chaotic solos because when most the time when he plays a solo he's on a totally different beat - it's very syncopated - and usually outside and related melodic place (almost outside) related to the bassline if you ever noticed.

So all three of them fill, it's not a secret they used tracks to pull it off live but the controlled it themselves for the most part. Quite few song where Alex changes guitar during the song, meanwhile Neil and Geddy would stay busy and so on.

    FREEWILL LYRICS:
There are those who think that life
    Has nothing left to chance
    a host of holy horrors
    To direct our aimless dance
    A planet of playthings
    We dance on the strings
    Of powers we cannot perceive
    “The stars aren’t aligned -
    Or the gods are malign”
Blame is better to give than receive
You can choose a ready guide
    In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
    And kindness that can kill
    I will choose a path that’s clear
    I will choose free will.
There are those who think that
They were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
    They weren’t born in Lotus-Land.
    All pre-ordained
    A prisoner in chains
    A victim of venomous fate
    Kicked in the face
You can’t pray for a place
    In Heaven’s unearthly estate
    Each of us
    A cell of awareness
    Imperfect and incomplete
    Genetic blends
    With uncertain ends
    On a fortune hunt
    That’s far too fleet…

So if you want fun, check out Bob and Doug McKenzie's Take Off, with a cameo by Geddy Lee. It would be a good April Fools Day song to do. They were a Canadian comedy team on SCTV in the 80's. One was Rick Moranis of SNL and Ghostbusters. It hit the charts here and for a novelty record did really well reaching the Top 20!

Great to see you get back to Rush! I think you would enjoy their 80’s stuff quite a bit.
    Off of Signals:
Subdivisions, The Weapon, The Analog Kid
    Off of Grace Under Pressure:
Distant Early Warning, Kid Gloves, The Enemy Within, Red Sector A
    Off of Power Windows:
The Big Money, Marathon, Manhattan Project, Mystic Rhythms
    Off of Hold Your Fire:
Force Ten, Mission, Prime Mover, Time Stand Still
80’s Rush is so unique with their atmospheres and textures, they sound so different from their early work, yet they still sound so RUSH!

The first time I heard Rush was as an opening act for Lynyrd Skynyrd. I had never heard of them before, so we got there a little late for the concert as we were really there to see LS. As we were walking in, we heard their sound and said "Who is that?" We finally got to see the stage and saw it was only three guys and said WOW! Could not believe the sound these three guys were making. My only regret is we didn't get there sooner! Skynyrd was great by the way!

Imagine listening to this band and these songs as a 14 year old. This wasn’t mindless pop, but, a message presented with deep, thought provoking, poetic lyrics carried to your ears by incredible, creative musicians. It’s astounding to think that such talented artists existed simultaneously in the 1970s and 80s, but, now there’s a void of musical creativity.

that was always my objective in learning YYZ on bass. Also the ridiculous lick in La Villa
when I brought home my first black and white Rickenbacker 4001, a used mid 70s one, I put the case on the kitchen table and excitedly said "Mom, mom, come see!"
She opened the case and said "that's just like Geddy's." Go, mom.... lol
Unfortunately, that one got stolen, after I had put on a bone nut, stripped the finish off the neck and fretboard, tung oiled it and used 0000 steel wool to give it a beautiful satin finish and put on Jim Dunlop jumbo frets... :-(
Now I have a '91, but I left it stock except for the Badass bridge.

Rush's Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson had been jamming together since the late 60's as teens in high school... When Rush officially became a band in the early 70's w/ original drummer John Rutsey, they began playing the clubs & bars of Toronto in 1971 (?) ... By the time they were signed to a US label in 1974, John Rutsey was out, and Neil Peart joined on drums... Rush spent years on the road, from 1974 to 1979 touring without a break, playing gigs as small as bars, to arenas for 10+K people... So, when this record was put together in 1979/ '80, Rush were veterans in the studio and on tour, and u can hear the tightness of the rhythms & music that they made together.
It was no accident that they became as proficient as they had become til that point... they had their vices (alcohol, weed, etc.) but they did not lose themselves to drugs & addiction like many of their 70's peers like Kiss, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, etc. had ... And when the 80's came, Rush was inspired by the new wave music and 'adjusted' their style of music to incorporate new influences and experiment w/ new sounds that guaranteed that they would have hit records past 1980, even as numerous 70's bands failed in their transition efforts into the 80's era.

Incredible song, very much a strong demonstration of their musical prowess. Geddy Lee is a high-register singer, often going into "Head Tone" highs (I believe that's the term). His timbre comes from a nasal quality, somewhat thinner than many other singers. Now, this is a young Geddy Lee, circa 1980. As you move on through the 80's and into the 90's, the quality of his voice improved a lot and became smoother, and more mid-range; his tone was more from the chest and throat, rather than head-throat, as he had been earlier. If you want to hear and excellent sample of his voice, as it matured, listen to a song from their "Hold Your Fire" album, from 1987. The Song is called "Open Secrets". It's actually a "Relationship song", from Rush! You don't hear a lot of those but this one is! It's got great dynamics and smooth changes. It's almost Jazzy! Great guitar lead and keyboards. Nice tune. Check it out!

Love that you are finally getting back into Rush, Canada's hardest working band....love this one!! Ok y'all, I have to ask.....since I've been a fan and a subscriber I love that you're digging into all different genres. One I am hoping you will get back into soon is Heavy Metal, in particular the Prince Of Darkness himself OZZY OSBOURNE, I am surprised you haven't delved into the land of Ozz. You need to play something by the original madman of rock. I think you will appreciate his style very much. Try Mr. Crowley or I Don't Know, or try an Ozzy ballad like Mama I'm Coming Home....all great choices. Ozzy's original guitarist Randy Rhoads is on a different level like EVH and SRV and Jeff Healey.....a must hear.!!
