  • The Elkhound is among Europe's oldest dogs. They sailed with the Vikings. Norwegian Elkhounds are hardy, short-bodied dogs standing about 20 inches at the shoulder. They have a dense silver-gray coat and a tail curling tightly over the back. The eyes are a dark brown and the ears mobile and erect. Overall, an Elkhound is the picture of an alert and steadfast dog. Elkhounds are known for companionship and intelligent watchdogs. Reserved until introductions are made, an Elkhound is a trustworthy friend ever after. These strong, confident dogs are truly sensitive souls, with a dash of houndy independence.

    They are the best dogs. Some people might be concerned about their distinctive bark, but they don't mindlessly yap. An Elkie will give a different bark for friends and family vs. the bark they give for stranger danger. I've had Elkies my entire life, I can't recommend them highly enough. The greatest of the great.

    I grew up with a Norwegian Elkhound. They are a social and friendly dog pretty much. They bond to the family. They do well with other dogs in the house. Train relatively easily, and on leash behave well. They can be a little territorial in their yard, but do not chase out of the area. They like to hang out with you, and will snuggle up when they want attention. The only thing is the hair and the shedding. They have a very thick double coat and leave hair everywhere, so you need to brush them a couple times a week.
    They have a decent life span of 12-14 years, mine made it to 14 before we had to put her down. Because they are purebred you will have certain genetic issues to deal with, especially hip dysplasia and cancer. They are a medium build height dog and can weigh up to about 50 pounds. They have a broad muscular chest and hind quarters.
    If you want a medium sized dog with medium energy (they like to go outside and do things, but at times they just want to hang out) levels, and can put up with the constant shedding/hair on things they are a good dog to have.

    My elk hound Freya is so loving and smart. Smart enough to know when she can and can't ignore me 😄 and her face is so expressive. From absolute joy to practically rolling her eyes when I try to get her to move out of my spot.

    I had one years ago he was a wonderful companion to me. Took him out for walks and runs in the park daily. He was trained to run off leash but could come back to my whistles and commands. I trained him to use his indoor voice, I trained him to whisper instead of bark.lol lol he was the Man !!

      My boy Baldurdash NEVER whispers.
      2:04 The remarks I hear most when I take my seven-and-a-half-year old fellow with a bit of frost on his face out on errands (he loves the bank and Home Depot especially) I introduce him by name, then by breed, then the inevitable question is, "Is that as big as they get?"
      "Just about."
      The other is, "He's the perfect size! What breed did you say he is?"

    • @kayhansen9229

      @@5610winston The whisper was just a funny thing I was teaching him to lower his voice because it hurt my ears. I would lower my voice and give him the signal for being quiet finger to the mouth and he would lower his voice. Then I kept lowering my voice he would lower his voice accordingly copying me. I then started whispering and I would say whisper and he would copy that to getting lower and lower until he was just moving his mouth it was really funny. And good too because it taught him to lower his voice immediately without being chastised or told to shut up. It gave him something to do!!lol

    The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient breed from the time of the Vikings, they’re used as search and rescue dogs in the Nordic countries. The breed was popularized in the 1930’s thanks to president Hoover’s dog “Weegie”.

    They truly are an amazing breed. Our elkhound is 10 months old, and lives in an apartment, but we do exercise him quite a bit each day (1h30m usually) and let him run around in the park on a long line. It's one of those breeds that I feel I could never not have at least one elkhound around, they're just such an amazing breed in so many ways. We were nervous at first that he might excessively bark, but surprisingly it was never really a problem and he only barks when needed, and of course their bark might be the loudest of any breed (a very sharp and loud bark that could definitely cut through thick forests).

      You are sooo right. We got our elkhound about a year ago now, LOVE the breed. Very glad I got an elkhound over a husky! (We walked by a house the other day and I knew they had at least 3 huskies because they were SCREAMING!) I expected the barking to be worse as well, but she stops when we tell her to or check on what she’s barking at. Amazing dog, amazing breed, so loyal and nice! Short but powerful. Gentle with my cat and my mother’s chihuahua :) Don’t think I can imagine a household without one now!

      My first elkhound (our first, actually, she had picked my Mom as her primary person) was nor outrageously vocal, but that doesn't mean she was quiet. The funny thing was, Grey would keep barking until we figured out what she was barking at. One notable occasion, I finally asked if she was barking at the Santa Claus figure on a roof a hundred yards away on the next street. She had no line of sight from the laundry room , but she was barking so enthusiastically at that window, it was the only thing that I could figure.
      "Are you woofin' on Santy Claus?"
      She went straight to Mom's bed and burrowed into the covers to warm Mom's feet.

      My elkhound, Loki, was turning his head at the puppy noises. Elkhounds are stubborn, independent yet sensitive, heat intolerant, and should have a fenced yard. They love to talk. They're great communicators. They weigh about 55 lbs and are prone to weight gain in their later years. They need to be introduced to cats during puppyhood because they're hunters. Loki is 2, and he's caught 14 moles. I didn't even know I had moles.

    Betty White appeared on the cover of _Kennel Review_ with BIS Champion Vin Melca's Before Dawn, hard to tell which was smiling wider.
    I've had elkhounds for almost forty years, Didn't know what I was getting into that long ago, but I can't imagine life now without one.
    A lot depends on the dog's people, but I never met an elkhound I didn't like.

    My boy Baldurdash heard your puppies whimpering and started barking at them.
    He's my fourth moosedog, and he's the best buddy you could ask for.
    One thing about all four, they can read your moods and feelings, they know when you're not feeling well, even before you are aware you're getting sick, and they want to take care of you.
    When my Mom was inher final illness, one of her caregivers would bring her infant daughter to work, left the little girl in her car seat in the recliner chair in Mom's room. The Elkhound we had at that time would hop into the recliner alongside the little girl and cuddle with her, as if to say, "She is part of my pack."

    'Dash rushed in and started nuzzling the laptop when he heard the puppies crying.
    I met him the day he was born, (I had my old dog, his great-great grandmother, boarding that week, and the old dog was in with the first-time mother as the midwoof.
    After that, every time I boarded the old dog, I would pick her up and she'd be in the breeder's kitchen playing with the puppy.
    They were well-bonded and the transition to my house was fairly easy. Aani even showed 'Dash how to help me shift gears by nuzzling under my hand when I pushed the clutch and reached for the shifter.

    Who got the idea that Elg in Norwegian means Elk?. Elg is moose, so the real name should be, Norwegian Moosehound

    • @HaakonanTG
      @HaakonanTG Рік тому +1

      Fun fact.... British pioneers saw elk in Canada and thought it was moose like we have in Scandinavia. And they called it elk after the Norwegian/Swedish name elg.

    • @5610winston
      @5610winston Рік тому +1

      Actually, _hund_ is more accurately translated as _DOG_ rather than hound, so it should be moosedog.
      I had a lady in a gray fur coat I named Moose for her call name, kennel name was Alacazam Merrymaker. She was a sweetheart, took wonderful care of my mother when Mom was recovering from a series of strokes.
      Mom credited the dog more than the therapists and doctors for her degree of recovery. The next dog, also an elkhound, was no less attentive.
