Such a kind-hearted breed. I've never had the joy of having one as a pup though. I adopted mine when he was 4. His former owner wanted to get rid of him because he never learned to be a proper hunting dog, afraid of loud noises and water, and very little interest in prey. I offered to take him off his hands instead, and for the next 9 years he became the most wonderful companion dog I could ever hope for.

Your big Elkhound looks exactly like mine did what a joy he was I am 65 now with a bad heart I'm not sure I could handle a Norwegian Elkhound again anyways I'm practically homeless now. But I had many at adventures with mine took him out for walks sometimes three times a day in the dark of night and everything. He was very smart would put away all his toys pick a new one then I taught him to use his indoor voice and also to whisper which was really hilarious. I had a lonely life without a husband and my Elkhound was my companion. I dream of my dogs at night many times. One time I went to a dog show at the Astrodome and when I saw the elkhounds I wept uncontrollably they all had the same look in their eyes as my dog.

My old dog Aani was boarding at the kennel when my boy Baldurdash was born.
Over the next four months when I would board Aani, she would be in the breeder's kitchen playing with the puppy. They were well bonded by the time 'Dash was ready to come to his furever home with Aani and me (Aani was his great-great-grandmother).
When Aani joined the Canine Choir Invisible, 'Dash looked for her for almost a month before he grasped that she wasn't coming back.
'Dash, now a bit over seven years, is as cheerful and happy as any dog I've ever had, and we're hoping to add another along about next summer.
And as this video shows, there is nothing in the world cuter than a Norwegian Elkhound puppy.

I have a 4 yr old male... Been thinking hard about getting another. We play as much as I can with my limited mobilty. However I think he gets bored and needs a bit more company like a playmate/companion. He's such a ham and gets along well with cats and other dogs pretty well. Hopefully soon he'll have a playmate to romp with. This video gives me hope that theyll be no confilcts if introduced properly. Thanks very much for sharing! 🤗🐶💜

I have had 2 Elkies, our first for 14 years and then a few years ago, I adopted a dwarf elk hound and she was relayed across country to me. She was 18 months old and just delightful. But before sending her cross country to me, the rescue organization spayed her without doing blood work first 🤬🤬. It turned out that she had a congenital defect where one of her kidneys didn’t develop correctly so when she was spayed without a health clearance being done, the anesthesia during her spaying killed her other kidney. The relay drivers all said that she seemed to have trouble holding her pee. I said ‘let’s just get her here and I will get her to my vet to figure out what was behind that.’ Initially we thought it might be a bladder infection, but that wasn’t it. It took no time for me to fall head over heals in love with her because she was such a little cutie and so sweet, and rambunctious just like the one I had gotten as a puppy when I was a younger adult. But within about 6 weeks of getting her home, it was apparent that she was in pain and I took her to the emergency Vet who within short order put her on doggie dialysis hoping to heal her only kidney, but when I went to see her on Sunday, they had her sedated to keep her from being too active and to control her pain. They too had fallen in live with her. And then they told me that all of their interventions had failed and that she needed to cross the rainbow bridge so that she would not live a life with no bladder control and live in constant pain. So, I rescued her, relayed her across country, totally fell in live with her and then found that I had to put her down. To add insult to injury, the ER Vet then gave me a bill for $5,000 for treating her from late Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. It was heartbreaking to let her go!!! So watching your video makes me smile and feel a pang of sadness too. I am glad that you shared it with us though. I now had a very sweet lab who will be 10 this summer. I am in the process of retiring now and have wondered if it might be time to get my boy Ebon a little sister and have questioned if there might be another Elk Hound in our near future.

Oh what a sad sad story, my heart goes out to you, here in the UK we have very few Elkhounds come up for rehoming, the Elkhound breeders we have make it a rule, that if there is a problem the dog goes back to them. I'd like to read sometime that you have a little sister for your boy x

I once had a neighbor, an older Norwegian Gentleman about 80 Years old who owned two Elk Hounds.
At the time, I enjoyed long distance running and cross country skiing and would take the dogs with me on long exercise trips.
They were good on a lead, and although I know they are Hunters, they did not have excessive Prey Drive and go bolting off every Rabbit or Deer that crossed our Path.
I may get one or two now that I have retired.
Perhaps I shall end up like my Norwegian neighbor?

She was unable to walk when I took her out to the car, but she sat up in the passenger seat and watched the scenery. She was able to walk in to the vet's office, barely, but somehow she knew and she tried to chase a squirrel.

Loved this video... I adopted a Shepherd/Elk hound mix in 1987 and was shocked by her intelligence and independent nature. She was only to be spoken to as an equal in normal English. Natasha Fatale was a constant companion for 12 years. She was loved by all my neighbors and never was restricted in our small town. When she passed there was more tears shed in Frontenac than I'd ever seen for anyone ever.

I would recommend going to a dog show or one of the AKC fun matches, talk to some of the handlers and breeders. And yeah, 'Dash has no problem keeping everybody entertained.

Once home, he spent a lot of time hiding in the shrubbery, but after a few trips to the home center, the bank, the hardware store, and the pharmacy, he and Aani became an inseparable pair and 'Dash's true nature as a social butterfly emerged from his chrysalis.

I see your comment was posted 8 months ago, so I hope you are enjoying your elkie's company. They love spending time with their people, and especially meeting new friends. My boy, Baldurdash, is a world-class extrovert, loves everybody. I see Mr. Coates has remarked on the barking, and 'Dash-man can bark with the best of them, but aside from an occasional visit from a 'possum on the back deck, he isn't outrageously vocal. A chorus of these dogs can wake the comatose, and their bark is generally loud and piercing (they have to be heard across the fjords). I have had four elkhounds through the years, and they are smart, loving, nurturing when necessary, and loyal, in addition to being the perfect fashion accessory. They are the best therapy when you feel down, and a joyful exclamation point to a good time.

Elk hounds are great dogs! Just remember they are highly intelligent so they won't fetch or get objects you throw. They will play, they just want to interact with you. They are great around people as long as they don't feel threatened. Which is most dog breeds. My dog was smarter than most humans I knew back then lol. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a fun loyal pet.

    • @5610winston

He sometimes comes into my bedroom in the middle of the night and climbs into the bed without waking me.

My response to someone who said you couldn’t have an Elkhound as a family dog.
You are so wrong. I’m guessing you don’t have kids and an Elk hound. We got a pup when my 3 kids were young. Never had a better baby sitter. She spent part of each night sleeping in the bed with each kid. If we went out in public and all 3 kids sat down 0n the ground, our Elkhound would lay down across all of them because she didn’t want them wondering off by themselves. It stressed her if she couldn’t have all 3 kids together. My youngest would lay on the floor in front of the tv and do coloring in her book. We would give our dog a rawhide chewy and she loved them. She would drape herself over the legs of my daughter and commence to tear that chewy apart. She had an incredible powerful chew and we would watch her biting on it very hard and it would be moved around on my daughter. Sometimes I would get concerned worrying about my child if the dog ever slipped and bites the legs. Never had to worry. I’ve had dogs all my life but this dog was the best. If one of the kids were sick she would lay down with them. As the kids got older our son would be in charge if we left the house for a short time. No one would ever be allowed to get inside our house. Our dog would not have permitted it. In the winter when our kids played outside in the snow, our dog was in her glory. She would help our youngest to dig tunnels, chase the kids around. When they went tobogganing she would run beside them barking at them and sometimes jump on them while they were going down the hill. I honestly can’t think of a better dog for kids.

Pretty tough to beat a Moose dog puppy and a child playing together in the snow. We would look out the window and see our daughter digging in the snow and the dog would be right beside her digging furiously. It was nearly impossible to separate them. When our daughter was old enough for us to try letting her be in the bathtub with us in the next room, our dog would walk in and get in the tub with her. I think she didn’t trust her being alone.

Lovely lovely dogs - just wondering if you have problems with recall as adults, do you keep them on leads? Is there any difference between boys and girls as far as recall training goes? Thanks

    • @Teamman30
      @Teamman30  5 місяців тому +1

Hi JJ, They are inclined to think for themselves, so are not generally good at recall, there's not much difference between male or female as regards this, we do keep them on leads when out in public, at home we have a fenced field that they can just run free in. you might like to see this video on my youtube of when we meet up at Dog Shows ua-cam.com/video/HumQY_l5tC0/v-deo.html, If you want to see more of my Elkhounds, they are all on my UA-cam www.youtube.com/@Teamman30/videos?view=0&sort=dd&shelf_id=0

May I ask what brand of playpen you use in this video? It appears very heavy and sturdy. I've been looking for something similar for my large breed puppy. Most playpens don't stand a chance against his weight.

When I was 12 I wanted an Elkhound. My parents did not agree. I adopted a shep-X, had two labs, and had several small dogs as an adult. My girlfriend has had St. Bernard rescues, and she has cats now. I have heard several opinions on Elkhounds with cats. What is your opinion on how well they do with cats and smaller dogs?

    • @Teamman30

They can be fine with Cats and dogs, It's how careful you are with the introduction, any animal that is part of the household they are fine with

Question for all the elkhound owners!!! I am thinking about getting an elkhound pup, however, I've read they may not be the best with cats but as long as they are socialized when they are puppies it will be fine, I have 4 cats. Opinions/personal experience?? Thanks!!!!

    • @Teamman30

I have no personal experience as we don't have cats but I have Elkhound friends who do have cats and say they are fine as part of the household, have you contacted an Elkhound breeder yet, if so who have you contacted.

To have 2 Elkies in the same house, you have to choose wisely. I’m talking from real experience. You can have a male and a female. You could have 2 males. You can not have 2 females. We had a small poodle who was senior when we got our moose dog. That poodle picked on the Elkie from the time the moose dog was a puppy. It didn’t turn out well.

If you can keep an elkhound loose without it running away hunting for mooses, it is a bad dog. An elkhound is not family dog, it is a hunting dog!
