I live in Florida and I have been giving all my dogs ivermectin. In 30 yrs none of my dogs have had heartworms. It would be great if you did a video on this for people although YT doesn't like that word very much. Thank you for all your help.
I got some sheep drench (ivermectin) but can't find how much I should give my frenchie. He's about 20 lbs
WARNING: I just want to say, that not all dog breeds can safely take IVERMECTIN because of a certain gene they carry. You don't want to kill your dog, so do your research.
@@rhenamaharrey1137your product should have a box with a weight scale on it. (I think the med is formulated to be based on animal weight - NOT animal type) If not, go to the manufacturers website and search "dosing"..BUT WARNING....first research if your dogs breed can take IVERMECTIN because there are a few breeds that have a rare GENE that could cause death if combined with ivermectin. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH TO CONFIRM WHAT IS SAID IS CORRECT.
@@rhenamaharrey11370.1cc to 0.2cc for better prevention if it's the 0.08 solution.
Please be very careful dosing with ivermectin because of a couple of reasons. One several breeds like (border collies to name one) are super sensitive and have to have half normal doses. There are also quite a few health problems that half or even quarter the dose related to heart, liver or kidneys. The proper dose is tiny sometimes only drops so it is very easy to give too much which can kill your dog at worse and do serious organ damage at best. Ivermectin also comes in several strengths. It's a great medication but please don't use the Internet for dosing ask a vet that knows your dog's history.
We have mosquitoes 365 days a year. If you are old enough to remember when there were no heartworm preventatives, then you will know how horrible death by heartworms or that horrible treatment is. I use Simparico Trio, and my dog is protected against heartworms, other worms, and fleas and ticks. She has tolerated this medication very well. I also get it from Australia where it is half the price of the U.S. Your vet may tell you not to buy products from another country, but that's because they want you to purchase from them.
My vet, in North Alabama just gave me a bottle of Ivermectin and some syringes to use.
I dose from April to Nov here due to the warm temps.
Can u tell me what dose. I've got 35lb and 48lb
@@just91064 no because my pup is 130 lbs. we use 6 ml once a month
Probably about half that? Maybe little less.
I’m in North Alabama, too. Do you use a dewormer for the other types of worms?
Yes, another scam perpetuated by the vet industry. In NC I give interceptor April 1, July1, Oct 1 Jan 1 if winter is warm. The once a month is justified because they also treat roundworms and hookworms.
monthly worming is not a bad protocol regardless of heartworm aspect. Wormers are very pricey as a stand alone med, check prices on them. So it's not a bad deal all around in my opinion
so back in the 80's when I went to vet tech school (back then it was only a 2 yr program) we were taught that the heartworm meds would kill the microfilaria thus not allowing them to even get to the heart to develop into adults and reproduce so giving a heartworm preventative could be given every 2-3 months because if your dog was bitten, the microf would not have time to travel and become adults. I know if you give this to a dog that has adults, it will kill the heartworm and likely kill your dog because the worms in the heart would die and clog up the heart. This is why treating is risky and must be closely monitored by your vet. Giving monthly is recommended by the clinic (and big pharma) to get $$$. With the costs rising, heartworm meds included, seems like giving 4-6x a year would suffice, of course that is just my humble unsolicited opinion. With the understanding of the life cycle, I've never given every month and never had a dog with heartworm. I live in Florida.
Thank you most kindly. ♥️
Thank you. Great information.
Good info! I live in a state with 4 real seasons and from October to April-ish depending on the weather I don't give my dog heartworm. When it's to cold for mosquitos to live the medication isn't needed. I just wish the blood test for it wasn't so pricey.
I am a strong proponent of not overmedicating our pets, but I’ve seen too many Heartworm positive dogs (we live in the SE) because people didn’t want to spend $10 a month to buy a preventative. It needs also to be noted that if a dog is bitten by an infected mosquito in October but you stopped giving the preventative for that season, the microfilaria will have months and months to become adult worms before you restart the meds in April. 🤷🏻♀️ So like was said, it really does depend on where you live.
@@Im_AshParker
To test for HW isn't expensive per se.
Some vets upcharge.
The private equity controlled corporate vet practices for example.
There's a 4Dx SNAP all-in-one "Heartworm" test that vets have switched over to. It tests for three tick borne diseaaes plus the HW test.
That drives up the costs.
The newest surcharge I'm seeing are "disposal fees".
What's up with that?
Now nickel and diming clients.
Awesome info Thanks Doc 👍👍
😊 Thank you Dr. ❤
Pure Love! Thanks !
Thank you too!
Your videos are so good! I wish you could do a video about older dogs and reasons why they get to where they can’t stop normal and they look like they back legs are slowly sinking . I have a 11 yr and 8 month old Frenchie and he is getting to where I’m seeing muscle weakness .
This has been added to my list. Thank you for your suggestion!
Thank you
You're welcome
All i know is i spend money for heartworm meds year round. I think if i skip then i must do a heartworm test on my dog for any new script. I can't recall but i think they test for heartworm every year anyway. First time that I've heard about the 8 day temp requirement.
They do make you pay for the test if you don't get it monthly. They way overcharge for it too. Which if you're in a state that gets snow and real cold weather there isn't a point to giving your dog those meds during that time of the year, but why would they make the test cheaper so people only give it as needed. So lame.
@@Im_AshParker depending where you live, you can get hw test quite cheap. I've rescued quite a few HW positive dogs. Treatment is not easy as many people believe. Better to prevent.
We started doing rescue of Corgis and Labs from from South Korea. And discovered it is a mega hearworm hub. We worked with an integrative practitioner to develop holistic protocols particularly for potential dogs with MDR1 mutation for all stages of heartworm using wormwood and other herbs. We learned that detection of make abd female larvae differ. The importance of enzyme use while killing adult heartworms, etc. One thing is for certain, it is truly easier to prevent than to cure.❤ Great information here, thank you Dr. Jones.
🙋♀️💖thank U
I studied microbiology.... Seeing an actual heart worm is heartbreaking. I believe that when it's cold, there are no mosquitoes. When mosquitos are out, please use heartworm meds!
What are your thoughts on the natural preventative, HWF?
I use HWF (Heart Worm Free from Amber Naturalz for my precious pooches. I have used it for years with no problems. You give it for 1 week then you stop for a week. You keep doing that pattern. I do it during the mosquito sesson.
Thanks for sharing 😊
I am big fan of you.
I have 13yr Cane Corso, her mobility is bad.
Do you have any advices?

I live in the north east and I haven't been giving my dogs heartworm preventative because they are INDOOR dogs.... there is a slim to none chance of them coming into contact with mosquitoes..... even so I do use natural oils on my dogs.... and spray my yard for pests.
Hello, what do you use to spray your yard? I have a new puppy, and I want him to fully enjoy his new yard.
I live in Louisiana! My dog has hemangiosarcoma and is on natural everything! But I put her on ivermectin because of the mosquitoes! She is thriving post dx 9 months! Lots of turkey tail mushrooms! What do you suggest?
I live in Scotland we dont have mosquitos. I'm told to give my dog nexguard every month for fleas, ticks and worms. So much conflicting information!
Idk, my dog almost died from heartworm before we fostered him. The treatment for it is very intense and nearly killed him. Natural treatments haven't worked for him unfortunately. I use topical advantix II from april to Oct. I hate using it, but I can't fathom him going thru what he did again. Even the rescue made us sign an agreement abt him having adequate prevention.
What do you do if your dog absolutely refuses to take it after the first dose? All 4 of mine refused to eat it, none of them ever contracted heartworm. I live in Az.😊
I am a duck hunter and I saw mosquitoes out in Nov - March. My dog got a tick and the lake had ice on it.
Thank you for your videos. If a dog has bad breadth due to serious gingivitis, what treatment should be given?
Teeth cleaning? Parsley mixed in food?
@veterinary secrets, Dr Jones, what about if I treat my dog regularly with colloidal silver? Would it have an effect on larvae? Killing it before it can mature? Just curious.

Are use springtime, brand, garlic bug off granules. But there really isn’t heartworm in my area, but I do go down to visit family in Florida once or twice a year. If I lived where there was a great deal of heartworm, I would be giving ivermectin once a month.
I was bitten by a tick and was very very sick for a couple weeks. Got antibiotics & okay. Because of this I’m in turmoil about putting my dog on nexguard plus for 5-6 mos a year. I hate to do it but don’t want her or us to be sick with Lyme. Any thoughts? Also got Yaya spray. Thanks 4 all your great videos!
I give my dog nexgard every month..is this too much. I live in Scotland.
How do I cut my dog's nails. They're long and black in colere and I can't really tell where to clip them?
My vet has always advised to clip only the tips once a month to prevent over clipping.
What's your take on tic pills. We do take our 3 large dogs to grassy and forest type areas. The last time (2 years ago) our vet wouldn't prescribe until we update our Vaccines. We are dead against vaccines. Just wondering your take on this as well
I have asked multiple vets (including integrative vets and holistic vets like Dr Judy Morgan) and they all say that they can’t recommend for me to be making a change at this time because I’m technically in a high risk area for Heartworm in north Texas. On the Heartworm map my area is bright red. I have been using Heartgard once a month and none of the vets recommended any changes. We have also had a pretty mild winter the last couple of years and temps were regularly in the 50s and higher. Counting the days and measuring the temps everyday of every month sounds tedious and it seems like I would have had to give it anyway because the temps were higher . It’s so confusing because I’d love to give less often or use something natural but if you live in a hot zone then it doesn’t seem feasible. you hear it’s fine to give it every 45 days then you hear no no you should just give it every 2 months or even 3 months. Then it’s start in April and end in October but then the map says start in May and end in December…but then if we have a mild winter ok nevermind better give once a month or at least every 45 days. It’s so frustrating. The 45 day recommendation was from another holistic vet Dr Katie Woodley who recommended that for higher risk areas where a preventative is needed.
I don’t know what to do so I’ve just been giving it once a month and detoxing my dogs for the week after. I have heard that detoxing with food herbs and supplements for at least a week afterwards is great for helping their detox pathways stay open and functioning.
I wonder why he doesn’t recommend Heartgard? It’s probably because the main ingredient can be a problem with dogs like collies and shepherds with that specific gene (white footed gene?)
I wish I lived in a Heartworm free area. At least I don’t give anything for fleas or ticks other than using natural products. Those products are some of the worst things for dogs.
I live in a country with tropical climate so I cannot not give heartworm prevention. Understanding the life cycle of heartworms, I decided to give every 45 days.
@@karenktq yeah. I understand. I think I’ll ask about the 45 days vs 30 days. I think it’s just easier for people to remember to give it once a month
@@laurenmichero9003 Giving every 45 days is still as effective as 30 days. I mark my calendar for the whole year since it's not easy to remember. Saves cost too since I'm only giving 8 times instead of the usual 12 times a year. I give Heartgard since my dog is not a collie or sheepdog breed.
@@karenktqthat’s a good idea. Yeah my dogs are Yorkies and a poodle so they take Heartgard as well
Ivermectin is reasonably safe and effective. I use the old school Heartguard seasonally. The only caution with ivermectin is with colies and white footed/blue eyed herding dogs where it is not a good thing and one of your meds is a better choice.
Is husky included? One eye if my husky is blue, and he has white feet
@@jaedenamadeussalim2438 Not a herding dog (collie, aussie, etc.) but they have a dna test to see if your dog may be at risk.
Can you provide information on the effects of ivermectin when it comes to herding breeds? In my research, I've discovered that herding breeds carry a MDR1 mutation which results in negative effects from "mectin" type of drugs at doses that are readily tolerated by dogs without the mutation.

May I ask u a question via email. Im in South Africa. Please. Please. Pitties skin and bad ear infection.
Hi Dr Jones. I live in South Africa.
We rescued two Pitties from same Parents just different litters.
Female has terrible ear infection and mange. Vet gave Otomax. Dont want to give again, as I know not good.
Male has bad bad patches all over.

Someone suggested Flexocam 7.5. half tab a day.
We are really have had seriously high vet accounts. Sorry just dont trust them anymore.
We are Pensioners. They are our babies. But really cant afford more vet billa.
Washing with clean water.
Then rinsing with two teaspoons of Applecider vinegar.
Used Canesten as well for ears.

Is the milbemycin safe for German shepherds?
Yes, it works similarly to Ivermectin. However, based on my research, I would still recommend Ivermectin.
So, even though the ivermectin isn’t supposed to be safe for shepherd dogs you would still give it? In the heart guard form?
How much and how often ivermectin for a 7 job 14 year old?

Dr Jones, is your CBD for cats and dogs available to Canadians?
No, I looked it ships from the usa and can't come across the border. Go to to your local weed dispenser and they stock cbd, just buy a low dose one. Guy even suggested one for my dog and told me what he gives to his. Was very helpful only cost $15.00 for a bottle.
The reason why we cannot ship Dr. Jones' CBD to Canada is because of the current policies on CBD here.
You can explore the NuLeaf website, a reputable Canadian platform that provides CBD products that we recommend.

What about flea and tick medicine. I don't want to give it to my dogs but I'm in southeast and fleas are bad here. I just got a bottle of Wondercide and trying that out. It's all natural. Anyone use this??
I sprayed my dog yard with it here in NC last summer, but I lived in FL for 40 years (moved here in 2020) and always had dogs (and sand for a yard) and never used anything on the yard or dogs and never had fleas. I used garlic last summer here in NC as a preventative but, since my yard is fenced, there really isn't anything tracking through it carrying fleas so I am going to try skipping it this summer
Ive been using wondercide for a couple yrs now on my 4 dogs. It works well but you must keep up on the spraying. My dogs go outside and play every day so they get sprayed every 1-2 days. Also spray their beds. In addition I use DE (diatomaceous earth/ food grade) on my lawn where they play during the height of the season. This seems to have worked well for us here in ohio so far 🤞
How exactly do you apply DE in your yard and when? 🙏🏻
@@sue9252 well for lack of a better tool i just use a small wire mesh kitchen colander/strainer and sprinkle it around the whole area. Im going to look into a garden lime spreader that would prob work better. Lots of ppl use the DE right on their dog and its bedding which im sure also works but i noticed it dried my dogs skin out too much.

I have a 1yr old toy poodle has allergy..she had her check up her heartworm test was negative but the vet said I must give her heart guard..she had bad allergy reaction when they gave her puppy vaccines..they put all vaccines together at one shot..so I'm very concern of giving her any further vaccines..please advise..thank u
Here is our advised vaccine regiment for dogs and cats:
1. Puppies and kittens only need a series of two vaccine boosters, one at eight weeks, then repeated at twelve weeks. I find the most critical time to prevent infectious disease is at this young age. In small kittens and puppies, I prefer to wait until twelve weeks. The traditional third booster in puppies is not necessary. If possible, delay giving the rabies vaccine until six months.
2. Puppies should only be vaccinated for parvovirus (MLV-modified live vaccines) and distemper (MLV). Only give Bordetella vaccines if going to a kennel or puppy class. Give rabies vaccine (killed) at six months.
3. Kittens should be vaccinated for the respiratory viruses and panleukopenia (FVRCP-feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia) (MLV). Feline leukemia (killed) vaccine should only be given to ‘high-risk’ cats-those in multi-cat households or outdoor cats surrounded by a large cat population. Give rabies vaccine (killed) at six months. Ensure that the vaccines are given in the subcutaneous tissue on the lateral sides of the right and left legs.
4. Common sense should be to keep your companion safe by avoiding exposure to public areas such as parks and pet stores. Keep them close to home and only expose them to animals you know are healthy.
5. We do not recommend vaccinations for coronavirus, leptospirosis, lyme, or giardia vaccines for dogs. The currently licensed leptospira bacterins do not contain the serovars (viruses) causing the majority of clinical leptospirosis today, so it is generally not a useful vaccine.
6. We do not advise vaccinations for FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), feline bordetella, FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), or limited use of feline leukemia vaccine in cats.
7. Our current advice is to have your dog or cat titer tested at 1 year of age, seeing if they have protective immunity. If so, they need no additional vaccines. If not, then give booster vaccines at one year. Following that your pet may not need another vaccine, but it would be wise to have another titer test in 3 years.
Some vaccine regimens are advising booster vaccines every 3 years, but in my experience this is not necessary and likely over-vaccinating.
I have read that ivermectin is not safe for German Shepard’s to take. Maybe they are in the same category as the blue healers? Does anyone know if that is true?
I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Hmm, I guess I am going to need to do some deep research.
what r the safe areas? he says he lives in one but then doesnt say where they r. seems like house dogs & cats would b at least risk no matter where. unless u lived by a swamp, like florida or louisiana or south georgia. the meds just seem so toxic...
I'm curious to know if there are any finding of dogs taking heart worm medication not having any form of cancers since ivermectin, fenbendazole and other parasitic medications are known to target cancer?
I had 3 dogs that took heart guard 10 months out of every year and they lived very long and healthy lives! One was 4 months from her 18th bday when she passed away from dementia and one was 19 Years + 1 week old when he died from congestive heart failure; my third one contracted a viral infection from which she didn’t recover, sadly- she was a few months from her 14th bday.
@@kjohnsonshelton0923 Love hearing about the longevity of your dogs and thank you for responding.
