Thank you so much for this video! The horse flies are awful this year, and I'm sick of watching them torture my horses. The factory made horse fly traps are $350, and it seems like a lot of money for something we can make at home. My fiance and I are going to build this today.
Hi Caroline! Yeah, those horse flies are torture for sure. Hopefully both of my videos on the fly trap provide enough info for you to build it. Good luck and let me know how successful it is.
Nice job on the build. Two questions though. What did you use for the funnel going into the plastic catcher at the top of the trap, and what is the clear plastic catcher at the top of the trap? Where did you buy those items? Take care and thanks for a great video.
You said that the length and width of the square section was 36 in by 30 in. What is the height of the Box section and what is the height of the trapezoid section that sits on top with the jar. I need the measurement to where the jar mounts onto the top of the trapezoid flat area okay? By the way thanks for a very informative video.
I am almost ready to setup the trap this year, I've been chased by a few biting flies lately, they normally come out in force in mid-June. I'll make a follow up video setting it up with a new ball and go over the measurements in more detail. Thanks for watching!
@@homesteadpilgrim I constructed my Manitoba biting fly trap somewhat differently than yours, but the videos you produce were very helpful in helping me to design it. It is highly effective. The original designer totally knew the behavior of these biting flies. I am now free to enjoy my backyard with my dog. Thanks for producing these videos, as they were a big help. Take care.
By the way, I constructed mine with pressure-treated lumber that I purchased and extra landscape fabric as well as spare wooden flooring. I screwed the woods together and I stapled the fabric. All materials cost me less than $75, but it did take a few hours of my time. The big challenge for mine was I have a 15% grade on my backyard. But it's working like a champ and the biting flies must pass it to fly up to the house. And they can't resist that black shiny bug ball that I purchased from Amazon for $13. All the best, thanks again!
Is there a secret on how high or low ball is positioned from box's lower edge? An a specific color more advised on ball an structure for better function?
Not really. I just try to have a portion of the ball above the lowest section of screen so that when the fly tries to bite the ball, they fly up and get trapped in the structure. I've tried both a black and red ball and both colors attract flies just fine. This is my own experience after 4 years of using the trap.
What is the purpose of the ball? Is it covered with a sticky adhesive? One University of Florida entomologist recommends dark blue as the attractive colour for deer flies; looks like u have a horse fly problem. May and June here are deer fly months.
Hey, Daryl. The ball is the main attractant of the fly trap. It is a plain child's toy from the store that is spray painted flat black and suspended under the trap frame. This simulates a deer, cow or horse's movement as the breezed moves the ball. The flies are attracted to that movement and go to bite the ball and their behavior is to fly directly up after the bite and they get trapped and continue to move upward to the top Catch N Toss trap. See my most recent video and I explain better (Setting up the biting fly trap for Summer 2019). There is nothing sticky on the ball, just dried spray paint. This trap is the best thing for biting fly control! The trap is full of dead biting flies. Thanks for watching.

I settled on using the Trap n Toss for the top of the trap, that works so well! You can get that on Amazon and Tractor Supply.

Wonderful news and congratulations!

How tall is the frame at the start of the video? How far down from the top is your cross beam?
44 inches tall. Measuring from the bottom leg, the cross beam bottom is 26 inches.
Thanks. Nice idea, nice video.
Thanks!
Don't see anything in it?
Rest assured it captures flies
That was a bird on your leg😮🤣
I know, right!? These flies in NC are big!
There a pain in the ass for sure
I gave up watching it took him so long to get to the point
Hey, Paul. Oh well, can't please everyone. Thanks for the partial watch.
