I used to have a huge problem with deer flies. Then I painted my free range chicken's blue. Lo and behold, them chickens love deer flies. In no time, I had no more fly problems!
my dad made something that uses similar principles. It was an exercise ball hung by a net that blew in the wind, making motion to attract them, it was also blue and then they flew up from there to the light above that was a tent fabric funnel leading to an inverted funnel in a peanut butter jar. They flew up through the funnel and could not go back down and he would empty the jar full of horse and deerflies every week or so into his fish pond. Worked like a charm. Movement plus a trap just like yours
Ok seriously I'm contemplating putting 4 of these in each quadrant of my land. They are seriously so bad. I prefer going outside in the rain because of deerflies. Love the channel
I hear you... some years are worse than others but deeflies are high on my list of things that make being outside painful...literally! Have a wonderful weekend, and dont donate too much blood to the deeflies! -shane
Just found your videos. I can't wait to try this. I live in VT and the deer flies are horrible. I've been bit through bike shorts while riding mountain bike at full speed! I'll let ya know how I do. Thanks!
I literally have about 20 I have killed tonight. Living in the country is nice.... Most times. These things will eat you alive! And I hate pesticides, while I'm having to use them, non-toxic ideas bring me hope! Thank you for sharing your video. 🤗 I will try this.
@@AHandleOnThings I saw something about that. It sounds horrific and scary. 👀 But I also think i clicked and replied on a different fly.... I'm battling horse flies. They are drawn to people and the sting is aweful! I'm trying out different tactics but living on a farm, they'll come no matter what... 🤷🙃 Thanks for the reply and I hope you have a great summer as well. 😊
I keep seeing this stuff I'm afraid to use it because ours are around the patio and I have hums that are around to. I'm worried about the tiny birds will get caught in it. Do you know?
I don't think you mentioned it or I missed that part (the why)...but I thought it was interesting you put the cups in motion. I went for a hike this summer and the dear flies were particularly bad. So much so that it was easy to notice that when I stopped to take a break or have a snack, I noticed there were less flies around me. Because of this I assumed they are attracted to motion and not just color. So it was a conundrum...how to continue hiking without moving... :)
Thanks Shane but my husband wont make tht, its work and he puts nothing close to that for the horses we have here. Sanctuary. So on my own, I'll figure smthg out.. do you think the tree root wld work with horse flies? Or any ideas I cld make it work. They are pastured and I keep up w manure but what attracts horse flies? I get so upset when they all are reacting to these flying demons enuf to hurt themselves. Any advice I will follow and thank you much.
Tanglefoot is Pine Tree Resin thinned with oil (Linseed or Castor). Also, why not paint air mobiles and paint them royal blue? Clean up with Pine resin is oil soluble, so the best way we've found to clean it off of our hands is to rub coconut or olive oil all over any sticky spots. I get coconut oil from Dollar Tree (Black people use it for hair treatment). I get Tanglefoot from Ace Hardware. $9 now in 2023.
Great idea! I need to make a couple for our woodlot, but I will now be looking for some small 12v gear motors so I can run them off small solar panels. Thanks for the info!
Shane-You seem to be the deer fly expert on youtube! I have deer flies in my yard. They seem especially drawn to the cypress trees there. Please give me your thoughts on this. Blue balloons tethered about 6 feet off the ground and coated with Tanglefoot and filled with helium. A little breeze would give them movement. Inexpensive to replace if they pop or deflate. If it's plausible I'd love to see a video of you experimenting with it.(I can't bring myself to wear a blue Solo Cup on top of my head)
I thought the same thing not long ago, I was a woodworker and carpenter etc... but I didn't have a clue how to weld. I decided that was no longer acceptable for me. So... I changed that. That said, You CAN weld... this is a cheap machine that can do the job. (not affiliated) www.harborfreight.com/flux-125-welder-63582.html A few UA-cam welding videos and you are sticking metal together! Now, I know not everyone really wants to learn how to weld... or whatever... but I can tell you for sure that new skills are a very satisfying acquisition that no one can ever take from you. So, whether it is welding, or painting pictures, or running a 3d printer or gardening, or whatever else flips your switch, go get 'em tiger! YOU can do whatever you set your mind to! Whatever you go learn to do, let us know! That kind of stuff and the stories that go along with it is what people REALLY love to hear about! Me included! @@pamelarivers3852 LOL, a year later! Saw the first deer flies of the year yesterday, N.Wisco. Last year, that sticky spray and a blue hardhat made my lawn mowing bearable. Also used a blue beachball with sticky spray to trap flies... both made a huge difference. Now if i could just get rid of the Blackflies. =/
Deerflies are much more attracted to moving targets and although they will hit any color, they seem to target "blue" best. In the peak deerfly season I often put blue buckets with tanglefoot painted on them on the mirrors of my truck and drive slowly up and down my driveway and roads adjacent to my home. It is beyond incredible how many deerflies I catch each trip when I do that. Because deerflies seem to be a "single hatch" per season, this tremendously shortens the amount of time I have to deal with deerflies around the house. I literally catch pounds of deerflies sometimes... pretty gross really. Stay safe and have a great year! -Shane
Ahh, I’m going for a drive good idea! Also I’ve noticed how MUCH they love my tires thinkin bout even coating them. Sounds excessive maybe but they’re destroying my work
It does work with Horseflies too... But THIS video shows the most effective horsefly trap I have seen! ua-cam.com/video/tlPPfp_6250/v-deo.html Have a super weekend! -Shane
I wanted to invent a shoulder harness for joggers with a stick high up so the horseflies go there. Did you ever notice they go around in a circle around your head? if you put your hand up they'll literally run into it! I'm not serious just having fun. 1-800 invention type of thing... haha
Brian, If only we could get a couple of spiders to collaborate we could end the deer fly plague for good! lol... but seriously, other than a head net jogging or even going for a walk in my area is often off limits. A good invention for joggers would be a real winner! Have a super day and thanks for the comment! -Shane
We don't make or sell them but It's a pretty easy device, anyone with a welder should be able to knock one out. If you find someone and they have questions, have them shoot me a message. Im happy to answer questions ! Have a great season! -Shane
Now all i have to do is figure out how to miniaturize it and install it on a hat...didnt Inspector Gadget have a whirly thingy that popped out of his hat!
Insofar as I know, that tanglefoot stuff can also get a bird or squirrel on it and sticking so it can't get off. The beastie will die a slow death if there's nobody around to free it up. Let's be aware of that.

Put clear good cling wrap on the cups and then paint that. Easy clean up.
That's an excellent tip! It certainly would make clean up easier like you say!
Have a super evening, and thanks a bunch for the comment!

Great idea and video. I wonder if you covered some blue balloons with tanglefoot on them and tied them individually to trees would work?
I think that would work just fine.
I have used blue buckets similarly too!

How do you thicken it?
