My parents grew up in East Germany and were subject to constant harrassment and terror by the STASI. My father would often have his alarm clock time moved up half an hour and was forced to take a quick shower and just toast for breakfast. Often agents would rearrange his sock drawer causing him the embarrassment of wearing socks that didn't match well with the rest of his clothes. And it gets even worse. Sometimes the doorbell would ring and my mother would answer the door and nobody was there, but she could hear someone hiding in the bushes trying to laugh quietly. The worst was July the 7th 1983 when they came went out of their house and there was toilet paper strewn all over the front yard. That was the point when they said, we have to get out of East Germany.
It's called "gaslighting". The idea is to subtly change things just enough to convince your target that he or she is literally going crazy. Change too little and they won't notice. Change too much and they'll know someone is messing with them. Change enough and they'll be so convinced they're going crazy, they'll actually become literally insane.
Simon for future reference, the Italians have a tendency to pronounce a group of initials as if it were a word, so O.V.R.A would be known as "l'ovra".
