I'm not sure why I was so excited to know this but I've always walked past like Toyota 4Runners and stuff and wondered what the second shift knob was for! But now I know thank you
Reversing or forwarding a bit for really engaging/disengaging to/from 4WD is one disadvantage of automatic locking type. Now, imagine when we are in a situation where we are stuck in a deep mud that we cannot reverse or forward a bit to lock the differentials. That's why when driving a truck/suv of automatic locking, we have to be aware of this situation to avoid being trapped in such situation. In manual locking type, we do not need to do this since the locking is done manually by setting the lock hub. But we have to get out of the car in order to this manual locking. :):)
Lex Soft all I can say is that if I did not have the manual transmission in this truck I wouldn't be here today. It legitimately save my life since I could shift so quickly with it.
I wanted one with a stick. the one I saw when I was looking was like 10 grand and had over 200 thousand miles... and had rust forming... and seemed to have has an accident... nice truck!
thanks. I ended up selling mine with 226000 miles and got more than what I paid for it years ago. Keep looking online and you might get lucky. They are a super rare find.
That's kinda high. I bought my 98 4runner with 5speed manual and 150k miles for 4K. Was a salvage put runs like a champ. Really wish it had an elocker though
Just used your UA-cam video to get through a muddy, slippery, wet situation. I got through on L4 for about a Kilometer of muddy, slipper, wet track. Please advise if this was okay or should I have used another gear option? Many thanks
@Dayly Driver hi I’m new to 4wd, when operating the truck in 4hi or 4 low do you shift with the on road shifter like normal or does that change too? Thanks for posting the video

Im glad to hear you were able to use my video to help you when you were stuck in your situation. The reason I make videos is to help those such as yourself when you need the help as details about your particular problem. When you put the 4runner into reverse it takes it out of 4wd into 2wd. Pretty cool hidden feature!
Thank you for the video. I have a 2016 TRD 4Runner automatic transmission. Can I Change gears while driving from 2 high to 4 high? or is it recommended that I come to a stop and change gears from too high to four high and park or neutral?
I believe the 4Runner is the same transmission as the auto Hilux, the Hilux handbook states that you can change into and out of 4 high and 2 high on the move up to 60 mph this works seamlessly on my Hilux. Hope this helps.
Hey man i have the 97 4runner 5speed as shown on your video hey the problem i have mine wont get into 4wd even my light wont turn on i check fuses but nothing would you kno anything what could be wrong with it ..
Mine had this problem. I believe its a switch or actuator type switch that is bad on the transfer case. If that switch doesn't turn on, then the 4WD light won't come on and that automatic locking hubs won't engage.
@Adam Johnson for certain, especially with all the gunk at the bottom of the tank. that's why it's not a bad idea to replace the fuel filter on an older higher mileage vehicle. cheap to do
Hey after viewing your video I guess I've had mine in 4wd h4 and drove like that about 100miles. Wen I would slow down to about 15mph. Happener to me 2 or 3 times were the car would bounce back and forth. Im assuming this was because it was on 4wd mode h4 at a low speed ? Do you think thats the reason. Can you drive on h4 at low speeds? I might add the green light was on the whole time.
Thank you for the video. I hadn't used mine in years and was stuck in deep snow tonight. On mine I have to turn and lock the 2 front hubs before going through the 4 wheel drive protocol/steps you show. Did you already have your hubs locked or no need to on yours? I own a 1993 Toyota SR5 (Tacoma) 4x4 manual. Mine was extremely difficult to engage but i finally was able to get it into low 4 and was so happy to see the green 4x4 light up on my dashboard! That saved me having to call Triple A. My question is when i disengage my 4 wheel drive, and unlock my hubs; should I leave the small gear shift in neutral or H2? I'm curious cuz mine is a little different than yours it seems. I think mine had been left in neutral before I locked my hubs and engaged L4.
thanks for reaching out and I'm glad the video helped you out. with mine I didn't have the locking diff so I didn't have to worry about doing that. yo uh rs is a bit different than mine was but similar. to answer your question I would say to leave the differential shifter in neutral in order to shift it back into or out of 4wd. t I is should work. mine was decently easy and straight forward. yours seems like it has an extra step with the diff locker. that's a nice truck you have. how does it do in the off road with the diff locker?
Thanks for response. I figured as much that im to leave it in neutral and of course regular 5 speed stick in neutral as well when disengaging the front wheels & unlocking hubs, but just wanted to make sure. Thank you! To answer your question it used to work great for off road use. I would also use for snow when others would be stuck it would just cruise right along with no issues. I hadn't used tho in past 5 or 6 years now that i no longer live in mountain area. Mostly surface streets and keep it in 2 wheel (rear wheels) drive. Thanks again for your video and info! You have a new subscriber!
Thanks I really appreciate that. Lucky you still have your truck. I sold mine a while back and wish I never did. The old stick shift 4x4 Toyota's are awesome.
@@DaylyDriverDayly yes it actually turns on. Just not really sure how to test the 2 front wheels to see if they are actually spinning when in 4wd. Any advise would be helpful
Thanks for posting this. I know it seems simple, but this kinda stuff is really helpful when there's no one around to teach it.
It's been 7 years and people are still finding it helpful🙂 Thanks, I needed this!

Reno Stubbs thanks for the feedback. I'm stoked the video helped you
Thank you much, I didn’t know got to go back to 2wd and get rid of the light
Now you know. Glad the video helped you out.
Most 4x4's you have to back up one and a half car lengths to properly unlock 4x4 system but not all.
this truck was no exception to that✌
Thanks for the information men it’s very Hopeful 👍🏼
I appreciate it and glad it could help you out
Actually you have more power/torque in L4. However have less top end speed in L4. Don't get torque/power/speed confused.
agreed 👌
No you have less power more torque
this is it bro.. nice description
I appreciate it. thanks for reaching out 😁
Do you know what trims have the manual 4wd shifter for 2022?
Well done!
Thank you for the video, very instructive, but does it put in the 4W drive require so much exertion?

ya these trucks really hold their values. I cant believe I bought mine about 4 years ago for 6500 with 180k mi
The Daily Driver I got mine in a semi trade. but the guy was asking 2700, it has 126k on the clock so mine isnt even broken in yet

So you are saying that the CLUTCH has to be pushed in and the Main Shifter has to be into neutral when using the 4 wheel drive option…correct??
Just used your UA-cam video to get through a muddy, slippery, wet situation.

Huberth Gonzalez I'm glad the video helped you out. Thanks for the response and hopefully you learned a useful lesson from the video.
In what position the gear should be when you normally drive in city?
Pls I want understand something here .before I put to H4 can I press clutch before put it?another thing can use H4 with gear 1?
thanx u made my day
awesome. I'm glad the video helped you.
Do we need to press hold the clutch when shifting the 4W gear?
you shouldn't have to hold the clutch in to get into 4wd
@@DaylyDriverDayly how about when shifting to 1st gear...2nd gear for acceleration?
@@harrisgila the sound of the motor will let you know when to shift

sorry about the dumb question... ive got an 87 with manual front locking hubs... will it function as 2wd with the front hubs locked..?
Also if you take a look on the label above your head on the sun cover, there will be more... Not saying to the vid maker but to all! Merry Christmas!
When shifting do you hit the break with clutch or just the break??
When shifting you only push the clutch in unless you are heel toe downshifting
thanks for that... but I'm concerned... you're almost out of gas and your "check engine" light is on... ;-)
if the car still runs there's still gas lol
