- This is the fastest and easiest way to fix the tailgate window on a 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 or 1995 Toyota 4runner. In this video I will show you how to disable the rear wiper blade motor and bypass the wiper blade position sensor so you can restore the functionality of your rear tailgate window on your second generation 2nd Gen Toyota 4 runner.

This is the most helpful thing ever, thanks so much. Took me 45 seconds to fix her
This would have saved me an hour or so if I would have looked it up a little sooner... but when I found it I was sure grateful.. took me less than 2 minutes to fix!
Where do you get that jump wire rig thingy?
I know you made this video awhile ago. I just wanted to let you know you helped this small business owner keep his tools out of the weather with this fix thank you very much man
Oh my god this saved my life. exactly my situation. I just ripped off the back off the tail gate too like you did, I couldn’t figure out where the electronics for the window actually was so I searched this up hell yeah saved me lots of time
Helped me fix my buddies rear window in seconds! First time I've ever had a youtube video help me with a problem and it go so smoothly!
Thank god you had this method on UA-cam. A local mechanic was trying to charge me $800 just to fix this!!
This video is very well done. It's tough to find good how-to's on 2nd gen's these days as they're getting pretty old. Thanks for putting in the time to make a quality, step-by-step, video on this. I'm hoping it'll get my window working. I usually have to go in the car, start it up, then press the window down button 20-60 times for it to roll down. The wiper being in slightly the wrong spot seems like a possible cause.
EDIT: Looks like that wasn't the issue...any thoughts on what it could be? The fact that it will roll down if I try enough times, and it clicks every time I press the button, tells me it is getting power. Maybe it's the relay?
It’s been so long since I’ve worked on my rear window I don’t remember all the components. There are a few safeties that can prevent it from working such as the door must be closed to operate it. But a really is a great place to start. Relays can get fail in lots of ways including sounding like they click but not passing current. I think the relay is a great place to start.
Saw this video MONTHS ago and kept in the back of my mind. I’m glad I was able to find it again. Thank you thank you thank you.
thanks for the video! this is exactly what has happened to my 90 4runner, so now off to diagnose. much appreciated.
I can't believe seating the rear wiper WORKED for me !!! Thank you soooooo much. It's been one of those months when everything is breaking and it gets overwhelming ( when you're broke ) So thanks again, you are my hero ! YOU TUBE ROCKS !
4th of July 2019... This helped me immensely. Thank you!
Been wanting to know how to do this for so long and I'm about to re paint the car so il be welding up the rear wiper holes and taking it out completely, thanks legend!!!
What a lot of other people have said, very useful. I did this before trying to take out the winder motor. Now at least I know this is not the problem.
Thanks mate bloody best vid on the internet
a 1000 thanks for this vid. fixed my window issue in less than 10 minutes, very easy to do.
I thank you Mr. Huttash for this very informative video, let me also compliment you on the production of the video as well.
Great job.
I just used this video for my 93 . Thank you so much!!
This is the first video appearing in my search and was a huge help. Thanks Ben!! The issue was indeed the wiper blade. Jiggled it in place and window engaged!
Worked like a charm! Thanks Ben!
My son was returning to college and his back window would not go down. We tried the first trick of seeding the rear wiper and it worked. The rear window is now operational and the time it took to fix was about 1 minute. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you for this video! I went out and wiggled my rear wiper and the window opened. Got to know my truck a little better today.
I call my 94' DogRunner. With Sunroof,Rear Window and all windows down the boys love it!. Three days ago we were out and rear window would not go up. Your fix was done in ten and a BIG Thank-You!
Hell yes! I'm glad it was useful to you. I drove around for over year with my window not working until I figured out this little bypass of the wiper motor. I still haven't felt the need to try and fix it properly where I can use the rear wiper.
It works! Thanks! You just saved me $500 for a new tailgate!
Thanks man. You saved me a ton of troubleshooting time.
Very helpful j have been looking for a video for months !! ❤
Great info just picked a 91 up today and can't wait to try this tomorrow
man thank you so much!!!!! 2021 and still helps
Thanks for the video it helps me alot to fix my 4runner back window, I appreciate that 🙏
...the most amazing thing I have ever come across.
Thanks my friend, finally my window is working
Thanks mate! really good video, will sort mine out at the weekend!!
Totally worked, thanks so much!
AMAZING! Thank you- it worked!! I was about to drop it off somewhere and was expecting to pay $$$$$
Thanks for posting man! Totally worked!
Thanks for this fix
I found it a while back when doing the mech in the door.
But today the window wouldn’t come up after I accidentally hit the rear wiper switch.
This worked just fine.
Thanks again for the video !

Holy crap your a godsend you saved me all kinds of time and time is money!
Yep ! Also, I changed the lone fuse that is hiding back behind the fuse box by the drivers brake pedal. It was a 30 amp pink box looking kind and it has helped with so much! I have a 95
thank you for this wonderful video!!!!
Super helpful, problem solved - thank you!
Thank you very much. I’ve got mine working.
Thanks! I tried all of the "other" things before I found this video, but at least I found a tailgate without the rust that mine has at the local wrecking yard. Now to move all of my good, working parts into the good door. ツ
😊 Thank you sooooo much! My wiper hasn't been parking correctly for years and the inside window button quit working looooong ago also. Then yesterday the window wouldn't roll down with the key. 🥴 Stumbled on your video!!! Manually parked wiper. Now the key and inside button work to operate the window! 🥳
Will continue on with bypassing wiper motor as you suggest 😉
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Glad it helped!
You are a God sir. Thank you for this video
Nice job man! Thank you!
I know it has been a while since you made the video, but thank you! Bypassed wiper motor in a matter of minutes.
I’m still running mine this way. I though about opening up the back of the wiper motor and cleaning the contacts that cause the interlock problem but haven’t bothered with that yet. This little bypass solution is just so easy to do. Glad this video was helpful. Thank for taking the time to leave me a comment.
Thanks for the video so helpful!!!
Thanks for the video. What size male terminals and gauge size wire did you use for the bypass.
Thank you for the insights, I had a feeling the 2 operations had a connection, or shared a connection, since they both failed together.
Awesome video! Thank you!
Great video and instructions! Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure it's either the controller or the relay on my truck.
Thanks ol' sport! Going to give this a try.
Worked amazingly thanks from South Carolina USA
Thank you!!! Ill do the wiper blade fix ... for my 2runner. I just need to figire out which wires to jump to roll the rear window down.
Thanks for the video, quick problem solved, my wiper was not seated correctly.
Extremely helpful.
This is was great. Thanks.
thank you. saved me some money
Thank you for this video
Best trick ever 👍👍👍👐
Great video. I have a 91 4Runner and the backdoor will no longer open. Do you have any videos or advice on how to fix this issue?
This worked for me! Thank you! If I were to make 4 more jumpers but use them to bridge the remaining pins would the rear wiper work? Or will the jumper prevent it from working?
Thank you so much!
If the window is going down slowly and getting stuck / stopping on way back up with switch in car and key….does this sound like a motor / mechanical issue rather than electrical issue that could be fixed with the solution in the video.
Any tips / pointers appreciated
Thanks
Thanks for the great video. I'm going to give your fix a try. On my 1990, the rear window seems like it starts to go a little bit and then stops. I have a brand new battery so I don't think that's the issue. Do you think it could be a weak motor? Your motor looked super efficient. All my power windows seem weak.
Very very helpful thank you so much
Thank you
Where do u get that little jumper cable
Awesome video! Mine still works fine, but I know how to fix it if it stops! Do you have any videos on how to remove those back panels so I can get to the speakers and replace them?
Thank you again for help!
What parts would I need to make the bypass wire?
4 years later and still saving people
Is there a link to buy a jumper wire?
Where did you get those jumper cables?
Dang. Very helpful.
can you please link the bypass cable i cannot find it online
Hey Ben, do you still have the 4runner? If so where are ya in Texas?
Mine worked for a while but just recently stopped rolling down, would doing this fix it?
thanks buddy!
Gracias desde Tijuana
thank you so much man !!!!
+ryanczapiewski I hope this video saved you all the hassle of tearing your truck apart.
Superb!!!!
What gauge wire did you use
I unfortunately let my 93 4runner sit for 6 months and the rear window worked fine before it sat. After getting it going again for the winter months I realized the rear window only goes down about an inch then stops and can only go back up? Rusted guide rail?
Thanks!!!
Thank you buddy much help, I have a 92' everything works except, I can't roll the rear back up with the key? I'll scroll through the comments to see if anyone else has the same problem, or if it was supposed to be like that? Cheers! Happy fourth!
Thanks for this tutorial! Any idea on how to get the read defogger working? i have a 1993 4runner and when i switch on the rear defogger the button lights up but even after 30 minutes the rear window shows no signs of defogging.
So itsnpossible that the rear window itself is failing. I replaced the original rear glass in mine a year or two ago cause it turns out the entire bottom steel frame (that lets it be lowered and raised, which also has the electrical connections for the defogger) had rusted out completely
So I did this, and it rolls up but not down.
I plug my wiper back in (it's up and seated) and it will now roll down and not up.
Any takers?
Thank you v
Where can i get one of those little wires that you jumped the sensor with? the little red one with the metal tips
Any luck finding one, I need one too
where can I found those
Thank ❤❤
Спасибо тебе
Does anyone know a way to roll the window up manually?
What's the name of the little red cable you use to complete the circuit ?
+Erick Soto I was calling that a jumper wire. It's something I made using flat male quick connect terminal ends on both sides.
I have e 1993 4runner the key brok and in the latck.
Where can i buy a repleasement anyone?
where can you find those little jumper cable that you used?
grab some wire and spade connectors. quite easy
Save me about five hours of pulling my hair out. Thanks a lot. Work awesome. Do you know why this issue happens and how to solve the main issue?
+Stephan sleeis I hope the link to this image works. The way the wiper knows what position it is in is with the park contacts scooting across a contact ring. I have never taken mine apart to see what's wrong but I imagine that these contacts have gotten dirty, have worn down or have broke off. If you wind up fixing it let me know how it goes. Here are two links to a wiper motor with the cover off of it, not sure what car this came off of but they are all more or less the same. goo.gl/images/STqxnN pop.h-cdn.co/assets/cm/15/05/480x304/54cab355033b7_-_wipers_03_630_1110-de-65918479.jpg
Thanks
Great video! Can I easily find that little red jumper cable in auto part stores?
did you find one? I'm looking for one too!
@@RyrieRoth you make it
Ben, great help and my rear window works fine from console button but using the key in the rear gate still does not work. Any ideas? Thx, Dan
D Filice ya same plz help ben
I finally fixed my rear window. Problem: Inside console switch worked fine but key did not work. Rear window regulator was fine as were all fuses. I replaced rear gate key tumbler since original barely turned with key, but that did not work. Dealer did not want to trouble shoot the problem so they gave me a referral of a mechanic who did auto electrical work. He fixed the problem which was the wiring harness fot the rear gate. It comes out of gate and travels under the truck and had broken wires due to exposure. Now my key operates the rear gate window.
D Filice how much did it cost to fix???
Cost was $200 to install my new lock tumbler (which I didn't need), then $350 to trouble-shoot the electrical problem and replace the harness wires. Toyota dealer did not want to attempt this as they warned me it might cost thousands.
Is it possible that sometimes it can just be caused by a popped fuse?
+Adventures of Robert I don't think so, not unless it was one of the main 50 or 60 amp fuses. The problem is almost always in the interlock switches built into the rear wiper motor. Sometimes you can wack the wiper motor and get it to work a few times. Inside the rear wiper motor are two flat spring contacts that limit when you can operate the rear window. They are kind of like Reed valves that drag along a copper contacts. The spring park gets weak and dirty with the wiper motor grease. That is why sometimes you can bring it back to life by moving the wiper blade around.
Hi, I have a problem...My tailgate window shattered, and i dont know the dimension of the window...I own a 2nd gen 4runner , 1993 sr5 v6 3.0
