Thanks for the shout-out. One of the main reasons I went with the PVC instead of wood is because I'm a terrible carpenter! 😅
Still lots of improvements to be made to my indoor aviary, but we all have to start some where. Appreciate all the informative topics and can't wait to continue learning more and expanding into the hobby.

Thanks Charles! You’re doing great for a newbie! Keep it up! The pvc is awesome.

Funny you mention a cage from a book shelf. When I got my first gouldians, I bought out a breeder. He had built a breeding set up from a 4 drawer dresser. Pairs in the top three, used the bottom drawer for poop collection. It worked great.

That’s a good idea for a cage. Love it!

    Mahalo Nui for the Shoutout!
I love to set up my aviary very densely for my finches to give them a lot of space to forage. My lavender waxbills are constantly moving and foraging and having a very dense aviary helps keep them entertained.
My other aviary is less planted so the Bourkes have a lot of space to fly around when they’re going their morning and evening zoomies.

Mash size can also be important. I once visited a bird market and there was a big cage set up in which you were supposed to move the birds from the exibition cage to your transport box. Unfortunately the mash size was big enough for Orange-breasted waxbills to slip through, so when a friend wasn't quick enough to grab them all 3 managed to fly past his hand and were dashing around in the cage. He catched two on the mash but was too slow for the third who got out of the cage into the big factory hall. So I recommend to always have pantyhose whith you. Tie a knot in one leg and cut open the end of the other. That way you can put the big opening around the usual cage and slide your hand into the small opening to get the birds.

Great idea and yes definitely be aware of the wire size especially for the smaller waxbills.

Great choice of a subject for Podcast … often the first bird people get is a gift, generally not from a breeder, and often the cage package is not suitable, not being the fault of the purchaser BUT the fault of the salesperson at the Pet Store/Shop.

Yep, most of the chain pet stores are mega offenders of this!

Yes I agree. Hopefully the more we
Can talk about the right cages for beginners the more tiny cages we can eliminate.

Guys you can breed any type of finches including waxbill size does matter when it comes to breeding I use fight cages 5x3x3 work great even by Crimson breed In them. As long will setup with some fake plants and lights your find, Diet it's key.

So again, we don’t have a problem with cage breeding, but I don’t like keeping birds in small cages year round

I’d love to know what diet you give your waxbills and your crimsons. I think for me it’s the time commitment with the live insects and with my work schedule i wouldn’t be able to give them the needed insects through out the day to keep their chicks alive.

Yes my bids mess up all the real plants in the aviary so i mix real and fake the all year then i take or add new and old

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  15 днів тому

Yeah I’m starting to add some fake to the aviary as well to try and give some variety.
