Check the birds vent to see if it is covered by a feather!

I suggest u put ur european goldfinches into one of those canary cages ive bred many this way just make sure u put some fake plants on those outer nests u have as a cover n theyll love it otherwise its the same as a canary n very straight forward

Birds have the same emotional circuitry as humans. A lot of animals do, so they feel the exact same emotions you do. I took away a nest from one of my canaries a few days ago. How did she react? Loud, unhappy chirping. Flying over to where the nest once was over and over again, fighting with her partner. Safe to say that yes she was unhappy. This lasted two days before she started building another nest. So yes, upsetting nests upsets the birds, if you deny that you are not aware. Similarly to how a bird panics and calls if you take away it's bonded mate. They aren't robots with a certain programming for how they'll act, they are living, feeling beings. They suffer losses and they get over it. Not enough people are mindful or considerate of their birds emotions and play god with their lives in a manner that is unkind. Not say that you do that and not saying that taking away unfertilized eggs is the wrong but to say that the hen doesn't feel that loss is wrong. She just gets over it and starts again

I appreciate your perspective on this and agree with what you have said. I have also observed this with my birds and could have chosen my words better as far as the removal of unfertilized eggs to encourage the hen to start laying another clutch. Thank you!
