    Great vid! Short story… im a farm girl and had to move into the suburbs and simply couldn’t be without a farm animal. Well i amazoned a small chicken coop. This came in a million pieces but i had to sneak this in right! Got it built.. got a couple hens. All is good .. and no one knew.. i had a little clandestine chicken operation going on..lol. Until a year later a neighbor unexpectedly walked inti the back yard. I had to pay him off with eggs to keep the secret… but somehow people would knock on the door asking for a few eggs… darn neighbor!😂😂😂😂😂😂

      Haha that’s awesome. And a good way to keep them quiet.

    Aloha from Hawaii 🌺
    I’m currently at 51 birds right now and I only count the babies after they become fully independent. If I did, I’d be at 60+
    I limit myself to 80 birds.
    Just today, I met someone who came to my workplace with a talking Indian mynah and we immediately became friends! He gave me that typical reaction after hearing I have 49 birds (before I got 2 more)
    I think it’s only too much if I have like more than 5 soft bills. They’re hard for me to keep now, especially with all the craziness from breeding the waxbills this time of year.

      Yeah but you have a lot of very special birds, and you’re an expert with them!

      Yeah I hear you on that. Very cool the guy with the talking mynah. I’ve never seen one of those in person before.

    So sad I sold my 6 Gouldians 2 days ago cuz I dont have time to take care of them, plus I am in Canada, no way to have an aviary outdoor, just freezing cold. Definitely gonna get them again when I have more time and living in a warmer place like Southern California!

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 місяців тому

      Yeah the colder climates definitely make it harder to keep birds outside. I have seen some people that have built greenhouses in colder climates and kept birds in there during the winter months. Possibly an option for you?

    Currently 20 parrots, mostly cockatoos. All outside in the greenhouse. Hopefully soon adding a gouldian aviary, also outside.

      I’ve got some for you almost ready to go! You do have some awesome parrots!

      Looking forward to them. I haven’t had gouldians in about 10 years.

    I can relate to all of you have said. When people find out I got birds they come to me with their random bird problems also. A colleague of mine had an aggressive robin living around her house attacking her car side mirror every dag and asked me what to do (she was very annoyed by this). I told her that he was attacking his own reflection and that it would probably give up after a while which it did... after a couple of months! And the funny thing was it returned the next year and was attacking its own reflection again but now at the kitchen window which was even more annoying!

      Hahaha that’s an interesting story. Sounds like this robin just doesn’t like looking at itself jk.

      Yes they can be very demanding and take up a lot of time.

    During Lockdown our newly created working department did online presentations to get to know each other better. I thought twice if I should mention my birds or not, but came to the conclusion that it would be less dry than previous self-introductions if I did. So I wrapped up my presentation with a list of my hobbies, last but not least: birds.
    Then I told them that my birds are my children and that I am no deadbeat. "I go with my kids to the public pool (showing a video of my society finches taking a bath in a bowl of water), I watch my childrens' soccer games (showing footage of my lineolated parakeets playing together with a wooden dice), I play hide and seek (presenting a picture of a button quail sitting under a pile of straw) and as a responsible dad I teach them everything about birth control (sharing a picture of fried quail eggs and sausages forming a smiley). Any questions?"

      That’s hilarious. I have done something similar before but not as comical. Were they interested to know more? I love the story thanks for sharing.

    • @Cascar13

      Well, similar to your stories they were shocked to hear how many birds I kept. But then I covered one of their seemingly easy questions in more detail from different angles. So since then they know first that I am insane and second who to call as a telephone joker if they ever faced a question about ornithology in "Who wants to be a Millionaire?".
      Also they seek advice on all kinds of bird related topics. I think if you can show your expertise any prejudice they might have had immediately disappears.

      @birdnerd Once you find a favorite the obsession never ends.
      I've been thinking of getting some canaries. I moved into a place where the property owner has chickens with slate walkways and brick planters I'm helping systematize things, she's probably going to downsize the chickens and take on some birds. There's high ceiling bird aviary already behind the coup so.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 місяців тому

      Wow that’s awesome. Yeah you should encourage her to get some different birds to put in there.

      Haha pretty funny. Yeah chicken eggs are a hot commodity to have available these last couple years “at least in the U.S.”. Love the story. Thanks for sharing.
