@@they_arent_human Well as far as the amp's EQ I had it set to "666" (haha) because honestly the EQ didn't really do much, especially if the preamp volume was past a certain point, like 3-4. That's just how some Marshalls used to be.
Now I did have a hissy old MXR 10-band in the guitar input that I just tweaked to taste until I got close. Trey had a 30-band Rane EQ and I have no idea how it was set, but in a model/IR that'd be crucial.

I loved using Rats with Marshalls, Peaveys, Fenders, etc. Great pedal that behaves very differently depending on the amp. It has a more chewy, organic tone than more transparent pedals. Sometimes I want a more transparent pedal, sometimes I want a lot of grit to push a cleaner amp into the dirt zone. The Rat does this very well. I also like the thickness compared to my old favorite, the MXR Distortion Plus. The Rat is a very versatile pedal.

I watched that same interview, and it was spectacular. He's a musician's musician along with being the quintessential music lover spanning genres. The dude is excellent and appreciative of those musician's who influenced him.
I have a 1976 Marshall JMP Mk2 100w Lead amp, and when I bought it off of a guy back in 1987, he pitched in his RAT pedal and said he used it as his distortion. Well I thought it sounded like garbage, so I got a BOSS HM pedal. At that time it was okay, but I eventually had an FX loop put in the amp and used an ADA MP-1 with rack effects. But when I saw this interview, it caused me to try out his technique, and I couldn't believe how that simple setting made the amp sing. Pretty cool stuff, but years ago, I bought the cheap Behringer V-AMP Pro and I got some cool tones out of that. But for kicks, I tried the RAT through my rhythm tone on the V-Amp after I dialed back the gain, and that worked and sounded pretty good, too. Who would've thought.
I dig your channel bud, you were the "go to" guy for me when I first got my Kemper, and you showed a bunch of cool tricks on how to manipulate it. I appreciate all the things you do for your guitarist comrades.

Honestly you go through your tests like youre reading my mind! Ive never experienced another channel like yours and ive been into guitar videos for 15 years. Too many focus on their shred than focusing on the actual tone. My local store growing up always employed a shredder that made any gear sound good which is ckever marketing. But you cover all that anyone wants to hear for a tone test. I know you shred awesome Jarrod but you focus on what your channel is about and i applaud you 100% . My idea is im trying to create a heavy metal Dumble sound. Im part way there. I always heard it from Tony Iommi and if you can get a guitar with one if his pickups that would be super awesome to hear your thoughts and comparisons. I drastically redialed mine to try and keep a guitar that sounded terrible to me through everything and may have accidentally found “my perfect Zen”, working backwards. These ultra high-gain, rivet-heads are so used to having utra-high gain amps, dime'd, WITH overdrives, WITH high-output pickups, that when they say "low-gain", it's still set to 2010 thrash metal. Go listen to Extreme's first album, and Nuno was actually going for EVH's Fair Warning tone, and he nailed it. One of the best tones I've ever heard. But, I digress... That's absolutely nothing like what this guy is doing. I'm scratching my head as to why he's even doing this video....at least with this title. Short of using a Marshall amp, and this RAT pedal (which a million guys used back in the 80's), and the title itself this video has absolutely nothing to do with Nuno Bettencourt (or how a RAT pedal was used to get a killer tone, for that matter). Yup a bit too much. I wish I had the same amp Nuno uses. I did the best I could with what I had

@@TONEWARSgearshow I think you got it wrong. RAT pedal is a distortion pedal. So you need to pluck it to clean channel of your amp. Not the dirty channel. By doing so, you will get the distortion only from the pedal. Not from the amp. Try it, you will get Nuno's tone easily with this setup..

@@isatriya2 actually I got it right. Nuno uses the rat pedal as an overdrive with his dirty channel. I set it up EXACTLY how he does.

Couple points. Nuno’s tone/sound on the new record is dry and one dimensional. It sounds exactly like the samples you played without the pedal. The sounds you did with the pedal have much more life than anything on “Six”. As a fan, I’m disappointed in the lack of imagination put in to his sound on the record. With everything going on around us, you would think a guy could get inspired to lay down something fresh. Instead, he slaps us in the face with another JCM with a boost tone. Yawn. Great video though, man. I apologize for all the hurt feelings I’m going to cause, but I keep it real. There’s just no excuse for dull, lifeless tone like this on a record today.

Tone is meaningless and overused this day and age prob bcs soley of EVH. All amps have good tone. Just dial in any amp, they’re all so close to the same no one can tell or would care IN THE SLIGHTEST. Write good songs and practice are the O-N/L-Y things that matter. All those amps behind you are a waste of $ bcs the difference to people is less than 1%, literally less than 1. They are ALL the EXACT same technology, as is the electric guitar. Its all about the player. Which boils down to writing ability and practice hours logged. Gear is equalized. Song writing and playing not quite as much

You should go play a metal gig with a Princeton Reverb and report back.
