    Cybersecurity guy here. The reason those scam emails are written so bizarrely is to weed out anybody who sees those mistakes and goes, “Oh, this is a scam.” You’re removing yourself from the scam process so they don’t waste time on you. The people who read those emails snd see nothing wrong are the real targets.

      @@zato-1766 Yeah, they also do it with “wrong number” texts. You ever get a text message on your phone that’s clearly from someone texting the wrong number? That’s usually a scam to see if there’s an actual person at your phone number. If you ever get a wrong number text, don’t reply. Just delete. Even opening it could potentially give you away if you’ve got read receipt on.

    The "unclaimed Amazon packages" thing stuffed with cheap shit is actually a modern take on a very old scam. Malcolm X described it in his autobiography, his little brother got a legit street peddler's license, bought some cheap costume jewellery, and went and sold it out of his trenchcoat at bars and barbershops. He never came out and said that the stuff was stolen, but he deliberately acted sketchy as hell so buyers would think it was "hot" contraband that he was willing to sell for less than full value just to get rid of it. When in actuality, it was bargain basement stuff that he was selling at a big markup.

      Repackaging all the dollar store junk sounds like a huge waste of time and money. They probably just buy a ton of cheap junk themselves on Amazon with a Prime account and free shipping and just resell the packages for $20 a piece.

      First off, sorry for your loss. Secondly, nobody "hacked" her account. There's a 99.999999% chance she clicked on a "phishing" link that lead her to what she believed to be a Facebook or other account login page, which she manually entered her login details on, and those details were added to a database. Phishing is _NOT_ hacking, but anyway, it could have happened years before, the timing was pure coincidence. If you haven't done so already, you should either change ALL of her passwords for every site/service she used, or deactivate the accounts. If she used the same password anywhere else there's a good chance the same people will find those accounts eventually, and try to use those as well to scam others.

I find eBay to be great for buying certain things, but other things are hard to find non-scam listings for, like when I was looking for an old Nook HD+ for my wife--bought two different ones, both supposedly the 32GB model, but they were the 16GB model, and without even an SD card to add the missing 16GB, which still wouldn't have made them the correct model.

    I can explain the "free casket" thing. Often people are at odds about what to to with a dearly departed loved one -burial or cremation, or some have cremation in their wills but their children want to see then once again, have them laid out, etc. so funeral homes often rent caskets for such sitiations. They do get banged up, the funeral home sellsthem or gives them away, and this is a great way for a person without a lot of money that doesn't want to be cremeated to get the job done.
    That is the LEGITIMATE way this happens.

I get 1 real message to every 1-2 dozen scams, tons of people just judging my listing for no reason, tons of windows shoppers (clicks only), flakes, etc. it’s so lame now. It’s better to just network in person and sell stuff. You don’t get as much money that way but it’s easier and goes to people you like. My favorite listing faux pas are:
    1)Selling clothes/shoes and not listing the sizes

    3)Giving useless "dimmensions" like "this item is the height of a closet doorknob," which is a real description that I have come across

When she said she was happy to buy them without trying them, he kept insisting she tried them on in front of him… needless to say, she didn’t go alone, picked up the boots and got back in the car before that psycho had a chance to see her feet and (specifically) calves. All these marketplace sites seem to skew at some point more to tailoring their searches to corporations and companies willing to pay for advertising. Almost every marketplace i have in my country started out as some nice spot to sell some old attic stuff to some other people, but now every company or store selling on there shows up at your specific location because "if they ship it to your front door, it is basically close to your location." This makes shopping for anything on those platforms almost impossible.

    the scam story is crazy!! This happened exactly to my mom! We were selling our couch on FB Marketplace and we had a 30 year old woman named Stacy and her husband wanting to buy our couch and they would take exact amount we asked for for it they did the whole PayPal email thing with my mom and at that point asked me if the email sounded right and I was like HELL NO. Stacy was very much not Stacy. To make fun of them and curse them out I had them call my mom and an Indian man picked up and I said "Hello, where is Stacy???" and he said "I am Stacy's husband" I said "Well my deal is with Stacy may I talk to her please" and he replied with "Stacy can't talk right now" I of course said "Well, Where is Stacy?" he then said "She is in the kitchen cooking" Then to make him sweat more I replied with "So Stacy is unable to cook and talk on the phone???" and he said "No she cannot" So that is where I said "LISTEN UP MF......" lmao my mom almost sent Stacy's husband the $500. I can't imagine how many other people hear this same script then fall for it. It is absolutely shameful!

    Scams are everywhere if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. A lot of people also have the mentality of "I know what I got" they usually don't. And always meet in public places pd parking lots, other busy areas with people and cameras, or bring a friend (this helps weed out the creepy or those with bad intentions).

  • @meats7854
    @meats7854 Рік тому +10

    They want to call you to verify that you're a real person, and also scammers generally do not want to get on a call, they want to go after someone easier than that. Same reason why folks post the image of "its this item, call me for more", because bots can't gather data from that to start messaging you. Its annoying, but both are a product of the nature of selling online on platforms that don't really act as a middle man like selling on ebay/etsy/poshmart/depot etc etc.
    There is also a local only button, which turns off the majority of shipping posts outside of ads.
