You both looked so much happier and relaxed when you were home. Some carpets and textiles if new are made with petroleum products. Might have been the culprit!

I love that you shared this video - showing how sometimes unexpected things happen, and it can be such a sad thing. This is so true for anyone who travels, or in just day-to-day life. But you still have high hopes and will carry on! Strong spirits persevere!

So sorry for your experience but you did the right thing by leaving, fumes can be so dangerous. Anyway, you still provided us with a glimpse of the house and grounds, thank you :-) Is so sad how many Jacobean houses were dropped to rebuild in a later fashion. to my mind they are far more beautiful than most of those that came later. Maybe you will visi another Jacobean house in the future :-) xx

Aww, I so very sorry that your trip was cut short. I know this was a big disappointment to you both, as it is always saddening whenever our plans get dashed and we are forced to return home feeling empty and unrewarded. It is, however, encouraging that your money was refunded, so now you two can plan for another adventure, and I'm predicting that the next will be doubly special. Take care, stay safe! Thanks so much! Yes, it was so unexpected to run into Mrs Crocombe, a day full of highs and lows.
“Mrs Crocumbe” said the smell of the copper cleaner made them go outside, so seems the staff was also quite aware there was a problem with a strong odor. It’s too bad they made excuses by saying there was no problem with the air. This was still an interesting video in part because of the problem. I’d love to know what would cause the petrol odor.
Don’t think you have to always be all smiles with us. It’s actually kind of nice to know that other people sometimes have troubles on trips.

Thanks so much Lyddie! Yes, we would have loved to stay somewhere else, however English Heritage only has about 10-12 houses in the UK so I think it wasn't possible. Mrs Crocombe is such a character!
It is certainly OK for you to share the ups AND downs of travel. As you said, "It's part of life." Glad you got to meet Mrs. Crocombe and have a fan moment and didn't have any lasting effects from the petrol smell in the cottage. :)

Oh my goodness, the home was so beautiful and the grounds. I am just amazed at the history. I totally enjoy being around historical buildings. If only the walls could talk. I am glad they refunded your money. That is a lot for a weekend. There are times when it is necessary to let establishments know what you find to be unacceptable. My poor husband always left these things up to me. He always knew when I was not pleased with a purchase or experience and he would look at me and I would say "hun bun you might want to wait outside while I chat with....." They need to know when things are not as they should be. I totally get your disappointment. I would have been crying too. I am very sensitive although some think I am not. So sorry you had to leave early but I was glad to see the house and Mrs. Crocombe, how cool was that!

You made the right decision when deciding to leave, first of all is health and well-being. In fact, in the previous video you could see that both you and Joerg did not have a good impression of the house, perhaps the energy was not very pleasant. The important thing is that both are well despite the disappointment with the weekend but other wonderful ones will come !!! Joerg as always a gentleman and a guardian angel! Cheers so couple !!!

So true: not every travel experience is a fine one. This reminds me of the time my hubs and I rented a car for an autumn trip to Vermont--and the car was a lemon and kept breaking down. We hardly saw a thing, and to make matters worse, the leaves were already off the trees thanks to a freak storm. But you know what? The memories seem amusing in retrospect, another "adventure" shared by the two of us!
That's so true Cathy! Oh no, that doesn't sound like fun. Vermont always looks so so amazing with all the golden leaves in autumn.

Sorry for your experience, glad you are both okay - look on the positive side, you had a wonderful experience at Belvoir Castle and Audley End with Mrs Crocombe etc. I don't suppose the adverse publicity this video will bring to English Heritage will help them, but they have a legal Duty of Care to ensure that property the public uses, in any capacity, is safe and fit for purpose. I originally thought it might have been a carbon monoxide issue you had, but maybe not. I hope they paid some contribution towards your travel costs, fuel for a trip of that length would not have come cheap. Put it behind you and I hope you find another beautiful stay to share with us very soon. Take care. x
Thanks so much! Yes, we loved Belvoir Castle and Audley End so much so that was lovely. We actually wanted to support a non-profit organisation due to pandemic because we know how much they struggle and never expected it would come to this. No, no carbon monoxide issue because you can't smell that (the moment you could, you would be dead). It came from downstairs where the lodge had the heating and there was something wrong.

But with everything that's going on in the world. My philosophy is when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. You did the best that you could, and it was an experience that you'll always remember. You got to meet Mrs. C, and that's a wonderful thing. Keep the videos coming. Dear Kirsten and Jöerg, What a beautiful place to visit. Such gorgeous structures, and meeting Mrs. Croghum was amazing! I felt devastated for you having to cut short your weekend. I would have been too anxious to sleep in the building with the smell of petrol. And it does cause bad headaches. I'm so sorry that happened to you. But thank goodness English Heritage did the right thing and refunded the weekend. I hope your next trip is a happy and safe one--and nobody gets lost! Kirsten and Joerg, I am glad that you posted the bad with the good! Life is not always perfect. It is great that Audley End did the morally right thing, good business practices. It would be great if they gave you an alternative space to try out to show that is was a one off.

Yes, that's what we think too. However, it seems that there has been a problem with the lodge/cottage and they should have sorted it long ago. Such a shame.

So sorry that your weekend was cut short but so glad they gave you guys a refund. On a happier not... oh my goodness...you met Mrs. Crocombe! I live in Maine USA and watch all of the English Heritage videos. I love Audley End and all of the videos done there. The ones done in the kitchen with Mrs. Crocombe are some of my favorites. I'm so glad you got videos of her and shared then with us! Maybe you will get to go back to Essex again. Love to you both!
