The shift + delete anchor point tool is a holy grail. I've never seen anything so handy before in my 6 years of using base illustrator. Thanks for showing it to me.
you're so right! there's so much to Illustrator but that's why it's such an amazing software! you can do so much with it :) are you currently studying graphic design?

I've been working with CorelDraw for 10 years, now that i'm studying Digital Design at university i have to learn how to use illustrator, and i need to tell you my friend, this video is gold for me, thank you so much.
Wow, I had no idea that you can retain the curve if you hold Shift while deleting an anchor point. Why am I only finding out about this now? Thanks so much, that will save me so much time !
hello, can you explain to me why it cancels the curve even if I hold down shift? another question, sorry if it is trivial but I started recently, what is the reason of eliminating the anchor point? Thanks in advance
@@braxtonbrown1333 I don't know what happened. I tried to do this again right now and it doesn't seem to work. I swear it worked before. Could it be something in the settings or maybe Illustrator updated and something changed?
Instead of deleting a lot of anchor points when you use the width tool and expand appearance, You can right-click on the object and click on "simplify" and scale the number of points just till it retains its shape. Then manually delete the few ones left. That's what I do. Don't know if it helps. Amazing Tutorial by the way!
Thank you for this great video! One tipp which I would like to share here is that you can actually reduse the anchor-points in a very comfortable way: Select your path > then go to Object > Path > Simplify
Bless you for a tutorial that doesn't come across as taught by someone on crack & threatens to give me a seizure due to its ridiculous manic speed that often leaves out critical steps and info for beginners. Showing us how to do things easier and quicker while SHOWING the explanation as to why is critical for learning, as well repetition of steps to help get it ingrained in our heads. You got a new sub, cheers!
Two amazing things that I have been missing my whole adult life: 1. The shift+delete anchor point feature (seriously, what they heck? How am I just now learning about that.) AND 2. The width tool (just ashamed I did not know about that) NOW.....I want to give you a big'ol round of applause! And thank you sir for this precious gift you have given me!
Great tutorial. Lots of good technical stuff in a sort space. Also I really appreciated the simple explanations of why you made certain artistic decisions. Thanks.
im in my first year of Graphic Design just finished the 'basics' of illustrator.. so far i found for me the curvature tool works better than the pen tool when it comes to smoother lines
The technique is great the tip of retaining the shape after you delete the points was something new in my 12+ years as a brand developer lol. U learn something every day!
I watched this two years a go and today I needed to draw something but I'm very bad at drawing so I remembered your video so I came back for it and now I find it very useful! thanks dude!
you can also do the following for tracing: 1. make the image greyscale/grayscale (mode change in photoshop) in order to be able to colour/color it in illustrator using a swatch of your choice, so for example you could make the image orange. No need for opacity change. You can also set the layer to dim image to your liking by double clicking the layer where the image is kept (in the layer panel), this double click gives you the layer options....a template option is also available in there too.... 2. put the image on its own layer and lock it. 3.make another layer for the actual tracing and then set the layer to keyline mode by control-clicking that layer's icon for visibility (in the layers panel). this means that, in my example, you will trace black lines that are super thin (regardless of zoom level) against an orange image - plenty contrast. this method works well for tracing images at full opacity and having the best contrast for following detail.
@@gendengben8258 i am not able to make a video at this time but just try each point in isolation and you should be able to understand the process....try placing grayscale images in Illustrator and applying different colour swatches to them.... then try making layers with some set to key-line mode and others to preview mode i will try screen capture at some point but i have an ancient computer
Cool! Also, when you place the image, check "template" it will lock the layer and give it some transparency automatically. And create a new layer to boot :)
I like how he explained the other way o adjusting the edges with the width tool, but went on to explain why it might not be a good idea for this specific example.
Thank you for this great tutorial! This is what I was looking for! btw you voice is sooo calming and relaxing, you make me feel comfortable watching you video :D
good option for tracing is to place the graphic, double click its layer and select the template option. this reduces the opacity to 50% by default and locks the layer
If you double click on the layer the sketch is on and check 'template' it'll lock and put down the opacity by itself. No need to manually do that. Cool tutorial!
Thick-to-thin trick using the simplify feature to automate anchor removal - Say for instance you want to use the the width tool that was mentioned @5:20... You can remove all the extra anchor points that illustrator creates after expanding by going to object > path > simplify. This feature allows you to remove extra anchors and preview how your shape will look before you save it. This way you don't have to remove each individual anchor point by hand you can automate it with the simplify feature.

1. Opacity to %30 and lock it 2. Block out shape with circle 40 in stroke 3. Use the pen tool with the least amount of point possible 4. Eclipse tool 5. Deleteanchor point and it retains its shape 6. Taper lines by moving points or width tool 7. Round out corners with selection tool
