@@jupiterbullish2520 Way to assume a lot about me... I too have a plenty powerful laptop for gaming. I also don't like using phones for retro gaming emulation. I also don't like the Odin. Also, the Steam Deck, while there is a fair amount of overlap, is not even close to same product tier that the 552 is thus comparing them is quite laughable. Also, "obsolete" isn't the right term to use for the Steam Deck. It very well could fail as a product, but that doesn't make it "obsolete". I "hate" on the 552 because it's an outrageously overpriced device for what you get and the performance is lackluster. Also consider that $227USD price isn't really the true price of the device. You also have to factor in the price of two new Micro SD cards, plus a case. Factor in as well, sales tax and the final price is dangerously close to $300USD.
Any company that is friends with Taki is far better off than falling out because he honestly feeds back the truth. And if they choose to break things off, that's on them, and the right way to view that is to say its their loss. I follow Taki, and his reviews are word. They should go rework their linux port, take it on the chin and make it better. The hardware is probably in the right spot. So step up Ambernic.
No company is friends with anyone. Taki is nothing but a R&D person they don't pay a salary and a sales person with some limited compensation to make up for it.
Anbernic is falling behind. They hit their sweet spot with the rg351p, m, and v, and now anything they do is just gonna be overpriced. The build quality on their devices is pretty good, and relatively consistent as far as I know, but now their stuff is overpriced
@@bbyidntdance well, what performance are you talking about exactly? Android is in its very early stages, and its widely known that the community makes the best Linux OSes for these handhelds, we always have. At this asking price, I could pick up a Gamesir X2 and used Pixel 3 (or hardware equivalent) and have a premium experience that trounces this in every way. Unrelated sidenote: the exclusion of Bluetooth here is a huge missed opportunity for HDMI couch gameplay.
Not trying to threaten Anbernic or anything like that, but, seriously, if they cut ties with you (or anybody else, for that matter) just for giving an honest opinion of their product--especially after all the effort you've put forth to try to help them improve their own products... that's a company that I (and many others, I'm sure) don't ever want to do business with. The only expectations they should put on you as a reviewer is that you're honest and fair. If they want good reviews, they need to make good products. As their consumer, I'm only interested in their products if they're good. As your subscriber, I'm only interested in your content if you're honest.
Well I got the RG351V and that will be my real retro console and then waiting for the Odin which will handle Dreamcast and up! But waiting till probably Feb to get it. Shame Anbernic put out such a beta piece of hardware, I think they felt they had to push it out before the others. Thanks for being HONEST with us.
To be honest they did have to push it out or just cancel the Handheld all together. What many people here don't realize is that the RG552 is supposed to be Anbernic's entry into Widescreen Handhelds like Powkiddy's RGB10 Max for example. This fact becomes more obvious when you look at the board revision which was printed back in October. Anbernic's RG353V is most likely going to be their Gamecube/PS2 Handheld.
Awesome review Taki! I'm one of the suckers that bought this thing so really curious to see the end and hear your final thoughts! The thing that scares me a little is little to no community support :*(

Thanks for the honest review, Taki. I can feel the confliction and disappointment you felt in making this video. And Anbernic if your reading, the RG552 is not a bad device, it just overpriced when compared to what's available (or will soon be).

I miss the anbernic logo on the front of the screen. How else are people gonna know what I'm rockin' if there ain't a massive orange logo pasted on the front!
the fact that the Switch lite and Poco X3 Pro both cost lesser than 250$ and one is full fledged console while the other rocks SD860, those retro devices have no right to cost more than 150$
Taki why did Ambernic not go with tiger soc 618 like pow kiddy x18s? That is a powerful chip and with their build quality they would have power and quality which is what needed to make a great device.
New to this retro handhelds thing, already got rp2+, 351v, 351mp and rg552, it can be the more expensive but my favorite is anbernics latest, screen, controls are just nice, also it is quite powerful.
To be fair, I probably won't upgrade from RG350 until reasonable PS2 emulation is possible with something similar in small compact form to this. If that be another decade then so be it.
Anbernic have always done a great job on improving on others products. From the RG350 (GCW Zero) to the RG351 series (Odroid) but they have never done anything original with software and the community devs have always been there as a freebie. For an Android device at this price, not only are there flaws but they've missed the boat on some features. No control mapping software built in (even Powkiddy included this), no Play Store etc. You look at what Retroid have done with that front end you showed off, and some of the Odin innovation and this is where I think we may start to see Anbernic get left behind now.
I personally was quite impressed with this video. Never seen God of war for psp emulated and actually look playable. & the fact that it can play gamecube & dreamcast. But I personally think £170 is quite reasonable for the device.
That built-in storage is one of the most expensive components on this device and strangely isn't even mentioned much. They should have put the option for it instead and dropped the price significantly instead. They crossed the 200 threshold and people have different expectations once a product goes there.
I know it's on the pricier side, but given the Switch-like modularity form factor, the GPD XP has got to be the handheld of the year! Android 11, with not only WiFi, but actual cellular LTE support, also makes it amazing for all of the streaming services. Unless having your PC games available locally is a big deal to you (which I do understand), it makes for a perfect Steam Deck alternative.
this really showed some potential for me in the rk3399, it would be very interesting to run a board like a rockpro64 or nanopi r4s as emulation box for older titles
6:19 Is that a FLUKE VT04A which costs $669 for a 28 x 28 pixels sensor? Check the Uni-T Uni260b for $375 with a sensor of 256 x 192 pixels sensor. Paying heavily for the branding huh...
These handhelds are definitely on the right track. I'm looking forward to the day one of these will cover most of the GCN library. Also, if you're able to with future handhelds, can you throw Marvel Ultimate Alliance in your PSP tests? It's a popular PSP game to this day, and very demanding for emulation too
I've grabbed one, but it's mostly because I'm curious about box 86 and others like that. I don't expect this system to last long in the lineup. Probably see the same shell with something faster by July.
No, it definitely does not. I don't even know how he's getting in the 20s in Ocarina. Unless taki has some magic sauce I don't know about and can run a newer version of Android on this, the last Citra build I found to work was a May 2020 build.
@@ethancarey3922 You mean you cannot get ocarina of time on n64 running above the 20 fps? It runs perfectly for me under android, Im not sure which emulator though, I just installed dig and let that pick the emulator to run.

This great and all but with that price tag, I might as well buy a used Galaxy Note 8 and gamepad that makes it look like a portable gaming console. The only thing that makes RG552 different is the dual boot to Linux option.
Hi Taki I am quite happy with the device but I wonder if you could help me with something, in order to use PSP DLC or my save games, I have to somehow get the DLC and savegames on the partition called GAMES on the Linux OS SD card, but this partition is not visible under windows except with special programs (which do not allow me to copy things there). Do you know of a way in the Linux side to open a file browser or such so I can access the right folder and include my save games and the game DLC? For me PSP runs a ton better on the Linux side of this device, Phantasy Star Portable 2 hardly runs on 1x on android, but on the linux side it run perfect 30 fps in 2x resolution. My biggest two issues so far with it are: the SD card they supplied is in exFat format which is not supported until android version 9, since the device runs android 7 I had to format the card before I could use it on the android side. The other issue is that the left stick is hard to use if you also have to use the shoulder buttons, I do not have the smallest hands, but I noticed moving the stick to the upper left is a lot harder then the other directions, so when playing a 3d game, it is sometimes hard to move to the front and left. Oh and the supplied linux sd card already broke after a day and no games would start, I had to reflash the firmware to the card and lost all my progess. I hope the shops open soon again so I can get a small 16GB sd card from a better brand then what they supplied.
Anbernic knew what they were doing when they released their device. No reason for you to feel guilt when they messed up, especially when you tried to give them a chance to fix it.
I noticed something weird today when i hooked up the HDMI to the TV for the first time, if you boot with the cable connected the RG552 will behave different from handheld mode, such as Retroarch will look different (like PS3 interface), and also games will show basels by default which it does not do for me in handheld mode. And this is with the default anbernic firmware too. I wonder if the emulation will be different too.
Is it possible to create game collections on the RG552 in Android mode? For example, it would be great to be able to display all Resident Evil games, whether PSX, GBC, DC or N64, via a central folder and launch the games via it. Preferably via an icon on the homescreen.
Wish they'd gone with Android 9 at least to be able to keep the emulators and Android games updated for a way longer time... That and include some control capture solution for games that don't have controller compatibility. The community will probably make this device great in six months or so for both sides (LineageOS por and better Linux CFW) but Anbernic really should not be making these blatant mistakes on the software side that anyone can see how much value are their devices losing for not having software up to par with their hardware.
For me,all i care about is saturn and n64 emulation fullspeed, anything newer is a bonus and i expect everything older to run 100% .. to get proper saturn and n64 you need x86 x64 windows so its a steam deck and a nice retro shell ..older pc games on steam are the icing on the cake

If it's not a 4:3 aspect ratio screen, I'm not interested. For 16:9 we will have the Steam Deck soon. I hope Retroid continues to upgrade their 4:3 line for retrogaming past RP2+. Love your content, Taki. Keep it up!
Steam Deck is too big
@@SRC267 Not for me. And not for all the people who are preording.
@@Old_Man_Jay big mistake. A lot of people will complain about the size after a while. This is how I feel also with my OXP, having tried my PSP again, these smaller handhelds are much more enticing.
Same here. 16:9 is too big already. 351 is the ultimate form factor, just put a GameCube capable processor in it and that's all I need or care for
These handhelds had my eye for some time, I watched a lot vids on different models and finally gave in and got the RG353P. Had it for about a week and haven’t put it down since.
To be honest, I opted out once I saw the specs and price. The video was just to help confirm my decision
Damn. You were the chosen one!
Thank you for your honesty! I love your videos and they are my go to source for finding a good retro handheld. I'd hate to think that Anbernic would hold your honesty against you. It was plainly obvious that the linux version has some serious issues.
We appreciate your great work man. I own the Rg350m and enjoy it but I wished it was the MP ver instead but that came too late.
Can't wait for your review on RP2+.
I’ve been emulating on my s21+ for the longest. But I’m ready to have a handheld where I don’t need to bring around a controller with me. This seems perfect for me! Thanks for the video!!
Thank you for the comment you left at the end of the video. Always keep your honesty. Currently, your channel is the main source of information for Chinese handheld. Most of the information starts with you. Therefore, I always hope that this channel will remain a true information channel, not an advertising channel for companies.
thank you Taki. and please always be honest. In the long run, I think it will be a good thing for your channel, the company, and us all.
Thanks for the honesty. Looks nice, but the performance is lacking quite a bit for that price.
such a pretty device, its a real shame the peformance doesn't match the looks, if this thing had the power of at least the x18s i would be like "say no more fam"
The X18s hell, apparently the Retroid Pocket 2+ can do PS2 for about $100USD!
The 552 can go fuck itself!
@@pieceofschmidtgamer the552 is perfect
@@jupiterbullish2520 Keep telling yourself that, sweetheart...
But hey, don't let what I say get in the way of what you want to buy! If you want to by a 552, then buy it! What you buy doesn't affect me in the slightest!
@@pieceofschmidtgamer your hating on it becuase it's not built for you, I already have a powerful laptop , I just need a nice screen , good build quality and retro games, if this can't play it I'll stream it, anbernic has some of the best community software developers look at the 351, I hate using the phone I need a dedicated device, not to big like odin or steam deck wich will be obsolete soon, nice form factor, my only gripe is the 2.4 ghz wifi and I bet 5ghz was cut in rider to have hdmi out wich I don't need but I can work with it...that put alot of money into that screen wich is nice.
I think I may sit this one out my RG351P is good enough for now.
hi taki nice job you're the best on this category and your honesty keep em going man
you gave the right advice & show the pros & cons. total support.
Taki is nothing but a R&D person they don't pay a salary and a sales person with some limited compensation to make up for it.
thanks for your informative videos and your sincere thoughts on those devices!
Anbernic is falling behind. They hit their sweet spot with the rg351p, m, and v, and now anything they do is just gonna be overpriced. The build quality on their devices is pretty good, and relatively consistent as far as I know, but now their stuff is overpriced
Please explain how this is overpriced, I'm curious.
@@TechToyTinkerCompany it’s $225, not worth it for the performance
@@bbyidntdance well, what performance are you talking about exactly? Android is in its very early stages, and its widely known that the community makes the best Linux OSes for these handhelds, we always have. This does the things that the previous handheld almost did but struggled with, IE Dreamcast, Saturn, PSP and those systems. While I have no issue with Taki, I feel he is only seeing what there is now, and not the potential or what is coming as well.
@@TechToyTinkerCompany I’d definitely hope for better psp performance, but when you have the retroid pocket 2+, which is $100 cheaper and has very comparable performance, I just don’t think it’s worth it
@@bbyidntdance That's fair. What is the clock speed on the pocket 2? and is the screen the same size and resolution? hdmi out to tv? i've hardly looked at that device to be honest.
Except the non recessed joystick on the gamesir gives me hand cramps. I don't usually get hand cramps from playing games.
or a razer kishi. I own both but kishi drains battery like crazy so I prefer Gamesir x2 bluetooth
I overjoyed you are being honest. The community appreciates you. I wonder how much the performance would have been better if they used the RK3588.
3588 is a beast. It has SD845 CPU power, but the GPU is slightly lacking.
It's better than what's in the RK3399 right?
Not trying to threaten Anbernic or anything like that, but, seriously, if they cut ties with you (or anybody else, for that matter) just for giving an honest opinion of their product--especially after all the effort you've put forth to try to help them improve their own products... that's a company that I (and many others, I'm sure) don't ever want to do business with.
The only expectations they should put on you as a reviewer is that you're honest and fair.
If they want good reviews, they need to make good products.
As their consumer, I'm only interested in their products if they're good.
As your subscriber, I'm only interested in your content if you're honest.
2016 called, wants it's OS back.
Great Review Taki!
The thing that scares me a little is little to no community support :*(
Well goddamn. Those closing remarks hit me in the feels Taki! Good for you for being honest!
I support this device! I make Retro arena and slash TV Android OS :)
One of the best, honest, reviewers on youtube. Keep doing what you do Taki. The community appreciates it. Gonna hold out to see what else 2022 pumps out before I drop 2 bills on another handheld.
Thanks for the honest review, Taki. I can feel the confliction and disappointment you felt in making this video.
And Anbernic if your reading, the RG552 is not a bad device, it just overpriced when compared to what's available (or will soon be).
being honest is always better, you are not making any mistakes, they do, so is not your fault and your subscribers trust in you over the company, so, i think the company needs you more xD
Anyway i better wait for next gen... again -.-
Considering poor hardware, poor software performance and the overpricing the right question is
Could This Be the Scam of the Year?
this one is a no go for sure
Crazy how fast and loose the internet uses the word “scam” these days.
Thanks for your Great Video! I saw some UA-camrs playing Kingdom Hearts on a X18S with the Aethersx2 PS2 Emulator. You think, or tried if Kingdom Hearts running on the RG552? Thanks!
might buy it looks pretty cool, and its not too expensive
Dude it’s $240 and it can’t even run ps2
Not too expensive?? Lol. It's way too expensive. 40€ more than the switch lite for something that can't run psp very well
@@gotrejo i dont really want it for emulation, mainly for android games and maybe some n64
Thank you once again Taki, appreciate your honesty.
I miss the anbernic logo on the front of the screen. How else are people gonna know what I'm rockin' if there ain't a massive orange logo pasted on the front!
They probably could have made a smaller logo on this device and it wouldn't have been so bad. Maybe just a stencil outline.
the fact that the Switch lite and Poco X3 Pro both cost lesser than 250$ and one is full fledged console while the other rocks SD860, those retro devices have no right to cost more than 150$
RP2+ Benchmark, Single: 369, Multi: 739, Price: 99 Dolares, crying yet, Anbernic?
You murdered this device ! thanks :)
Looks nice and runs most of the emulators pretty good. But the price is too high for its purpose!
160-180 would of been a day one buy for many
To be fair, I probably won't upgrade from RG350 until reasonable PS2 emulation is possible with something similar in small compact form to this. If that be another decade then so be it.
Nice video Taki 🤗👍 Greetings my friend 👋👾
Wich 3DS Emulator do u use on Android side? I dont have a 3DS Emulator on my RG552. Just Drastic...Thanks
Thanks for your honesty. You’ve saved me buying the wrong thing. Odin is the one for me, delays or not
Anbernic have always done a great job on improving on others products.
I will get the Odin and X18S but not the 552
Look at retroids build quality
I personally was quite impressed with this video. Never seen God of war for psp emulated and actually look playable. & the fact that it can play gamecube & dreamcast. But I personally think £170 is quite reasonable for the device.
My own thumb was cramping up watching you use that analog stick lmao!
Hey! How well does Citra run on the retroid pocket 2+?
That built-in storage is one of the most expensive components on this device and strangely isn't even mentioned much.
They should have put the option for it instead and dropped the price significantly instead.
They crossed the 200 threshold and people have different expectations once a product goes there.
Outside of iPhones and prices set by companies, internal storage like that isn’t very expensive.
Stutter City. Such a shame, Anbernic have messed up imo.
It will get better with updates, hopefully.
It's perfect and checks all boxes for me
this really showed some potential for me in the rk3399, it would be very interesting to run a board like a rockpro64 or nanopi r4s as emulation box for older titles
Thanks Taki!

Is that a FLUKE VT04A which costs $669 for a 28 x 28 pixels sensor?
Check the Uni-T Uni260b for $375 with a sensor of 256 x 192 pixels sensor.
Paying heavily for the branding huh...
It is borrowed, I don't own it :(
I wasn't trying to flex. I would buy something much cheaper to do the job.
I have a similar thought, but with normal Linux distro + a BT keyboard.
@@TakiUdon you got it. Maybe even get proton on there and make a low power steam machine.

Sadly no 3DS!
@@Infyra No 3DS? Doesn't that beat all.
No, it definitely does not. I don't even know how he's getting in the 20s in Ocarina. Unless taki has some magic sauce I don't know about and can run a newer version of Android on this, the last Citra build I found to work was a May 2020 build.

PPSSPP under Android suports Vulkan API on RG552?
I think there will be a rgb552+ down the road or something similar
What game are you playing at 3:08?
This great and all but with that price tag, I might as well buy a used Galaxy Note 8 and gamepad that makes it look like a portable gaming console.
The only thing that makes RG552 different is the dual boot to Linux option.
Please Anbernic, create a clear plastic (purple, green) version.
I wonder if the emulation will be different too.
i support the right decision of taki. love from india
Thank you
Rg552 or x18s or retroid 2+?
I appreciate this channel.
I’m gonna hold out and wait for my Odin pro
Need the same thing with the last snapdragon 🥰
