I much prefer these types of reviews that actually goes into the fun/feeling of devices. Appreciate you taking the time to share, as this helps me device which of the seemingly hundreds of cheap portable gaming devices to choose.
For those asking, the racing game that plays around 01:21 is called Desert Drift and it is a Pico-8 game ( www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=55232 ). And yes, the original Celeste Pico-8 game works on this device too!
@@RetroGameCorps Before my battery started to go I loved my PSP Go for retro stuff. The biggest thing to get other is that the experience isn't a seamless as some of these newer devices. But I've now got a 280v ready to go in my basket to replace it.
My primary retro gaming devices are original hardware with flash carts displayed on CRT TVs, because nothing will ever look better than that. Beyond that, I have a couple RPI modded arcade1up cabinets with 1280x1024 screens that display arcade games at native resolutions with integer scaling and scanlines. Plus an iiRcade. We have a modded Sega Genesis mini that sees some play, and my old Odroid GO still gets a little love. I just recently ordered an RG280v based on your recommendation because I think it will perfectly fit in that gap where I'm sitting watching my kids, and I only have a few minutes to pick-up-and-play. Plus, bedtime, it'd be nice to have something small. Seems perfect for my usage. Thanks for the review!
I had one of these for around 2 months but sold it. The screen and speakers on this are excellent. However (I'm a bit older), my hands got sore very quickly with this. It was just so uncomfortable to use. There is no reason to use this when you can have an RG300, 350 or 351P or V. I have each of them and they are fun and pleasant to play. Lesson learned .....
I picked up a Vita 1000 for dirt cheap and followed your guides to get it up and running. I'm a huge Sony fan, so the PS1/PSP/Vita library alone is very appealing to me, all the emulation ability it has is just a bonus. I adore my Vita very much!
I'm in Canada, I ordered one a couple days ago. I can't wait to get it, looks so cool. I have the original GP2X Wiz and a Caanoo, want something newer and more easily portable. I had no problem with my Wiz until I had an OS update and it bricked the entire thing. I looked at fixes but the Caanoo was out so I tried that. I like the Wiz better overall, but the biggest thing I found was the size. It was more portable than the Caanoo. So this one I hope is super portable so I can take it more places. (Love the vide, awesome work)
Same here, I already have some devices which ; rg351v, rgb10max2, gamesir x2, 2 of retroid pocket 2+ (on the way). However, this UA-cam video convinced me to buy this 280v
I put Ted Lasso down on the queue for my watchlist because of you a year ago and my wife and I finally got to watching it. It is a very nice show and thank you for bringing it to my attention!
I just ordered the 280v, I'm playing on a Funkey S right now and you are totally correct about playing games with 1 hand. I've been playing Pokemon with 1 hand for about a week. Epic
Hi Russ, great work as always 😄👍 At the moment this is my only retro console, I'm waiting for the RG552 because I want a perfect PSP emulation in an "ultimate" device... but when I first saw the RG280v I completely fell in love with it 😍😍😍 his size, his style retro with no analogs, his vertical layout... it's adorable !! And it plays up to PS1, perfect in your pocket. Keep up the good work 👍
My best friend turned me on to your channel cause I was in the market for a portable emulation device. I have purchased an Anbernic RG351V for my wife in the past and all of her co-workers were begging her for info on where she got it. But this RG280V you showed off is more me. I love the small form factor and gorgeous looking display. The Famicom colors are so appealing to me for nostalgia. Thank you so much for these videos and your guides, I have bookmarked the guide for this system you made and im looking forward to my system and 256gb card to arrive so I can load it up with all of my favorite games. You rock!
I really enjoy playing with my Powkiddy V90 because it gives the nostalgia of the clamshell Gameboy SP design. Its easy to pick up and go when going to groceries or going to bed. Hoping that there will be more clamshell designs or I might just buy the new RG351MP (because it feels like that is the definitive RG351 model).
I love your videos. I've made so many decisions based off of them. Not to mention they keep me sanity in check when I'm at work at night! Keep up the great job!
Another Anbernic console i need to have now.. can't wait ! This looks really good and easy to use, and i am not talking about taking it everywhere ! Thanks for the review, and don't stop playing !
I have only one and it's Dingoo A320. Swapped old battery to new and soldered one of the shift button, that was broke off recently and still enjoy paying it. Think of buying rg351 for now. Thanks for your videos, it's super helpful.
We appreciate all your service. I myself used your guides in order to hack my Vita, and they were also what led me to purchasing my 351s and RGB 10 Max. That being said, you need to take time for you as well, so don't feel pressured about having to have a steady stream of content and just do what you enjoy. Need some off time to just game? Yeah man, do it. We'll be back when you feel inspired again to make new vids/guides. :)
I have one and it is amazing. The screen is sharp and I feel it so good in my hands while playing 8 and 16 bit games; let alone Game Boy or GBA titles.
I’m a bit disappointed that I bought an RG351P a few moths ago. ArkOS ceased development on it but will continue to develop the RG351MP. I know that is the way of the world but it doesn’t take away the sting.
@@livinlicious Yes, because the quality feel while holding a metal device with these buttons, d-pads and analog sticks makes the experience more enjoyable and I have a pre-existing affinity for arkOS.
This totally brought it home for me. I never had a decent handheld as a kid (just the original Mario game & watch, sadly lost now), so the last few years I decided to find one that fit me to play all those fun games from my childhood. After breaking myself in with the tiny pocket go (actually amazing little handheld), I upgraded to the anbernic rg280v and rg351v. I used your videos to set them up just the way I like ‘em, and pretty much settled in for the last few months doing exactly what I planned: playing thru all my childhood favorites. And while the wood boy is superior in a lot of ways, and definitely my main, the rg280v is perfect to take on the go. What’s more, I almost appreciate its look more than its bigger sibling. It truly is an amazing balance in a perfect little package. Thanks for this video, and your simple setup tutorials. I know I would have struggled so much more to get where I wanted if I hadn’t found them. Keep up the good work, but glad you took some time to play. Cheers. Be well.
I got my RG280v and LDK v on the same day, ended up sending back the 280v since the LDK met my portability needs and play my RG280m the most out of all my handhelds. I love the unique purple pink color and premium build quality, it is such a joy picking it up. Usually playing GBA games, Quake and Rekkr
Recently got into the idea of getting a retro device. Ended up watching everything and getting confused about what to get. I think this is the reason I got interested. Something small and nice to use I can play some old games on that is not expensive. Great video!
I've only bought one emulator handheld (not counting my 3DS) and that was my Retroid Pocket 3. While that'll be my primary handheld for emulation, I'm thinkin' of buying another to just take with me everywhere in my pocket and not take up too much room (something smaller than the RP3, I mean). I was debating on either the RG280V or the RG300X.
You do such a good job explaining, going over, and handling these systems my only problem is picking one out of the lot that suits my needs as a retro gamer. You're videos are stunning and your attention to detail and helping people understand what systems are best has made getting intot he hobby one of my modern day joys while still letting me easily get back into the games of yesteryear I loved growing up. Thanks so much for all the help I can't wait to get the system I picked and start playing my old RPGs and Platformers I loved so long ago and still play today
Just getting into the retro scene and absolutely love your website and videos. Thank you so much for the amazing effort. Growing up in the 80s, I’m into the what I would have seen in arcades - Tempest, Gauntlet, Xevious, Venture, etc. Also like the FPS like Doom and Quake. Thinking about getting an RG353M, but seems the 280V would be a nice starting point.
Love mine. Got it 2nd hand close to retail price, but the guy selling it chucked in a 200gb memory card already set up, which was a result. Perfect for a lunchtime gaming session at work.
Ordered one of these today for the ability to just toss a mini GBA/SNES in to my bag for my lunch breaks at work. Would you recommend any kind of screen protector of low profile case for carrying it around?
Thanks again Ross for a very good video. I was on the edge about getting a smaller handheld than my RG351M and this video convinced me. I haven't touched my RG351M since. We sometimes get so caught up in the "arm race" that we forget the "fun" factor.
Russ, I literally just started playing Xenogears last night lol.. What are the odds you chose that one to use as an example🤘😎🤘.. I seriously wanna pick one of these up tbh! I live of portability and with my job it would be perfect!
@@Nick_Lamb I've never played it before ever.. Had it sitting on my Vita forever and just now thought I'd play it. Loving the story so far.. How does it run on this one?
@@amatherly81608 Oh nice! I have a 351v and it runs with no issues. I've had PSone games crash when I use the fast forward functionality but other than that no issues. Xenogears is a fantastic game, I'm not too far though I don't think (maybe a little under halfway) and it's my first playthrough. I tend to play 3 different RPGs at the same time though so who knows when I'll jump back on it. The themes are so cool though, I like the story better than the xenoblade games so far.

just ordered RG280V with 64gb preloaded for 65dollar, this will be my first retro gaming device (beside my PSV). just love the portability and that is why i chose this over RG351P
I am totally new to retro consoles and I picked up 3 of these 280v’s based on this review (2 as gifts to other people). l can’t tell you how much I love it. After only having it a couple weeks, I would now pay $200, maybe even $300 for it. I recommend this 1000%. Thank you so much for the review!!!
I love your channel! Your Guide and Review Videos helped me alot, but I really enjoy videos like this. Just chillin, playing some games and talking about the device you're using at the time. YT sometimes can be a bit to "we need to be professional" and the personality gets lost in it. So I applaud you for just making a video, nothing more, nothing less!
I ordered this device for myself two days ago and am looking forward to it) This is a new addition to my collection of portable emulators (BittBoy, Pocket Go S-30, Anbernic RG351V and Powkiddy Q20 Mini)
So this video popped randomly to my feed two weeks ago. It made me fell into a rabbit hole of retro handheld devices. I'm currently waiting for my RG351MP to arrive.
Watched this video a week ago and was intrigued. I've owned a 351p for almost a year and loved it, but it's not portable enough to have on me all the time. I finally bit the bullet and ordered a 280v for $64. I hope as has as much fun with it as you do.
I started w/ the GDP XD for a while, then when I started watching this channel went with the RG351P. I have recently purchased a PS Vita which has become my device to play Vita, PSP, N64 and ports. Everything else I play on the RG351. Without this channel and your guides I would have never got either of those devices which have become the primary way I play video games now. Thank you Russ for this channel and I look forward to the future power of these retro devices :)
@@zgolkar I do miss the bigger screen and power of the gpd, however the feel of the rg351 in my hands and the portability of it is just better to me. The gpd is just huge and feels awkward to handle for a portable device. It's probably the same reason I like the ps vita over the 3ds.
It really speaks to how wholesome a channel you have that you can mention one-handed gaming as a plus for a device and it doesn't really feel like a setup for any kind of dirty jokes.
I agree with you. RG280v is the best choice to carry around with the gold spectrum of retrogaming. Little powerhouse. Thx for all your videos Russ. Awesome work. Regards from Portugal.
What a nice surprise, but totally agree with you... This little gem got me too... A little weird 'cause got RG350, PK X18, Vita, PSP, Xperia Play, GPD Win 2....but in the end, this tiny buddy eventually become my EDC, always in my pocket, stays with me wherever I go...
Great perspective! Sometimes the “best” device isn’t the best device for a given individual (or situation). For this reason, I love my PS VITA-it’s flawed and limited in countless ways, but damn is it easy to just pick up and play (now that I’ve done all the hacking setup). Similarly, I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet from a few years ago that I kitted out with an iPega Dual Thorn controller as an emulation machine and indie PC game machine. While neither can beat the gaming rig within eyeshot, both are often much more accessible and just a joy to play in their own ways. To each his, her, or their own!
The biggest weakness of the PSP (specially the Go) and the Vita, are the damn proprietary storage cards. They limit GREATLY those consoles, because if they went with a standard format, those console would still be the absolute beasts of emulation.
@@NueThunderKing Absolutely! I recently picked up the SD2Vita card-which allows you to use a standard SD card-and it has been a game changer for the VITA. My only real problem-some quirks with RetroArch and the fact that I can’t emulate my favorite N64 game-Castlevania 64. What Daedalus X64 runs a fair amount of N64 games, Castlevania doesn’t really run all that well.
@@Bushidounohana never heard of that adapter, might look into it as I don't think my 64GB card will be enough for my Vita. Now I need a reliable adapter for my Go.
Hands down my most favorite handheld also, ultra pocketable, portable, one of the brightest and saturated screen, 4:3 ratio. I use this more than the RG351V, MP, RGB10 Max,ZPG,RK2020,GKD Mini,OGA,Gameforce,RGB20 n the list goes on
I have a PSP since 2010 that i used as my main emulation de device for many years. On 2018 or so i bought a 3DS and set up my retro collection there. Not too long after I got a Vita and did the same. But i found it a bit big (and expensive) to take out and play on the bus and such. So i got one or these, the rg280v. I wanted a miyoo mini but those are very hard to find. I don't regret my decision one bit, this thing is awesome, very cheap, fairly easy to setup, looks and feels good, and is more powerful than my 3DS and PSP!
Glad to see the 280v get some love! I had one for a few months and decided to upgrade to a 351v. I ended up selling the 351v because I just never used it. This little guy and my Galaxy s9+ play everything I could want.
The RG280V is my main device. It fits nicely in my back pocket like a wallet and I can pick up and play it easily especially while I’m at work. I’ve beat FF5 and FF7 on it so far, working on Mario RPG 👍
You're the reason why I bought the RG280V over the other emulators. I've loved it since then, I get so happy just looking at it. Played it so much next to a river 😁
At first I used my DS lite and 3DS for retro gaming. Then I modded my PSP to play retro games and arcade. With your videos, I was able to get my hands on a RG350P and has become my all-time favorite! With a 64gb card, I was able to put all my PS1 games on it along with my retro games too! Im still planning on getting more devices, but so far I takey RG350 with me everywhere I go.

What is that blue handheld you were holding?
@@CarlosXPhone the RG351MP. I just released my review video of that device today, check it out!
@@RetroGameCorps I see. Will definitely see it now. 😀
Playing on a psp. Has a nice support from the community for the retrogaming
I could see this being a lot like the PSP Go -- lots of people still love that one, and it's so portable.
How can anyone comfortably play a handheld with the buttons that low
I second this... while the device is powerful, I find that size is not conducive for long gameplays.
I was thinking the same thing... it doesn't look very ergonomic for longer sessions
@@JuanHernandez-ze3si thats probably a good thing. lets us enjoy other things in life rather than playing games all day.
This looks cool! I wish more of these were readily available in Canada, shipping times suck lol
patience. where ha patience disappeared in todays society? order it and sit back and enjoy life and before you know it, it'll be at your doorstep.
(Love the vide, awesome work)
Also reporting from Canada, we get shafted sometimes.
I think I’ve gone back to this video three times. Just ordered one yesterday based on it. Really looking forward to it.
Same here, I already have some devices which ; rg351v, rgb10max2, gamesir x2, 2 of retroid pocket 2+ (on the way). However, this UA-cam video convinced me to buy this 280v
Loved the vid Russ. I ordered one as soon as I finished watching.
Hope you enjoy it!
I put Ted Lasso down on the queue for my watchlist because of you a year ago and my wife and I finally got to watching it. It is a very nice show and thank you for bringing it to my attention!
That is awesome!
I just bought the rg351m for my 5 year old because of this channel. I’m hogging the machine.
get one for urself too
if you're looking to upgrade at any point, you can buy the rg505 or the Retroid Pocket 3+
I bought it too as an impulse and it’s awesome
I just ordered the 280v, I'm playing on a Funkey S right now and you are totally correct about playing games with 1 hand. I've been playing Pokemon with 1 hand for about a week. Epic
Hi Russ, great work as always 😄👍
At the moment this is my only retro console, I'm waiting for the RG552 because I want a perfect PSP emulation in an "ultimate" device... but when I first saw the RG280v I completely fell in love with it 😍😍😍 his size, his style retro with no analogs, his vertical layout... it's adorable !! And it plays up to PS1, perfect in your pocket.
Keep up the good work 👍
Vita does psp and ps1 well
@@1fareast14 Hell yea it does. Fuck, Vita had so much potential. Fickle gamers...
@@alchemistrpm82 Best dpad I've ever used :)
Thanks, I'll try my best to keep playing :)
GB/GBC/GBA are amazing on this thing!
For me it’s the Rg351mp. Especially now that arkOS 2.0 is on it(you’re late to the party, Russ). The screen is so nice.
Would you prefer it over the Retroid Pocket 2?
I’m a bit disappointed that I bought an RG351P a few moths ago. ArkOS ceased development on it but will continue to develop the RG351MP.
I know that is the way of the world but it doesn’t take away the sting.
Yeah I just got rg351m as well
@@livinlicious Yes, because the quality feel while holding a metal device with these buttons, d-pads and analog sticks makes the experience more enjoyable and I have a pre-existing affinity for arkOS.
Cheers. Be well.
The truth is you started this channel to find the perfect handheld for Chicken. Its the supreme being.
Hey, you say this isn't necessarily your go-to device, it's the best handy portable one. So what device would you recommend as the best one to get?
RG351V or RG351P
Get one with two analog sticks. You'll need it for games like Tomb Raider or Metal Gear.
So cool, it's getting better and better.
Russ’ editing is so amazing now I love it. He captures the perfect aesthetic of the best era of video games
Thanks Jordan!
PS Vita for me currently, but you have peaked my interested with some one-handed RG280V usage... It would suit my lifestyle a bit better

I have many of these devices and I play this one the most, even though it doesn't have the best specs. It just feels good to hold. I don't know why.
I think it’s because you like the way it feels when you hold it
I love my RG280v. I have a few of the consoles that you focus on and it's absolutely my favorite.
Still playing this unit??
In 2024
Did you receive your handheld yet? And if so how is it? Thanks
@@veightrwd8828 Shipping from China so it'll take quite a bit more time than that. They estimated around Dec 20

Aww, didn't know the kitty was 13 years young. Hope she's doing well! You got me thinking about getting this device. Thank you!
Damn Xenogears looks clean af!
It's not playable without two analog sticks. Thats why the clip cutoff right when you can control Fei.
Saw your first video fell in love with this device and it's always with me to play
I personally would prefer a handheld device that is similar to the PSP
Vita w/ Adrenaline ftw
so a psp
Thanks again Ross for a very good video. I was on the edge about getting a smaller handheld than my RG351M and this video convinced me. I haven't touched my RG351M since. We sometimes get so caught up in the "arm race" that we forget the "fun" factor.
Russ, I literally just started playing Xenogears last night lol.. What are the odds you chose that one to use as an example🤘😎🤘.. I seriously wanna pick one of these up tbh! I live of portability and with my job it would be perfect!
I think the odds are actually pretty high hah. That's the first game I played on my 351v
@@Nick_Lamb I've never played it before ever.. Had it sitting on my Vita forever and just now thought I'd play it. Loving the story so far.. How does it run on this one?
@@Nick_Lamb I mean I'm assuming you've played quite a bit more than what was shown lol
@@amatherly81608
Oh nice!
@@Nick_Lamb I'm literally doing that right now.. Well technically 4😰😰🤣🤣.. I'm playing Xenogears, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 5 strikers (technically not a jrpg, but it's Persona so I counted it anyway lol, and Tales Of Vasperia).... Yeah A.D.D is real🤣🤣🤣
I'm watching this while playing my RG300. Thanks to your videos
I can't play Street Fighter with 4 buttons when it's a 6 button layout.
how does one play street fighter on controllers?... L and R buttons... and carpel tunnel... ^_^
Huh doesn't it have shoulder buttons?
@@Murasame it does, but its gonna be real uncomfortable lol. the unit is not really ergonomically friendly
@@SuperCrazyfatGuy Yeah I was just replying to what the first comment said about 6 buttons for SF. It has 6 and should be able to play it fine.
As far as the ergonomics go I don't think I'd have too much problem having used tamogotchi's, gigapets, gb sp, gb micro before. I really just don't like phones for controls.
Are there not any of these devices with Genesis/Saturn style button layouts?
You rule. Thank you for everything you do.

holy. That power up is so fast it literally puts every pc every made to shame.
just ordered RG280V with 64gb preloaded for 65dollar, this will be my first retro gaming device (beside my PSV). just love the portability and that is why i chose this over RG351P
pretty sure with your big hands , you not realy play much with it .......
I’m very happy to read this. Glad you enjoy it!
He got paid to say all this
I love your channel!
Why do you prefer the RG351P over the GPD XD? Don’t you miss the bigger screen?
@@zgolkar I do miss the bigger screen and power of the gpd, however the feel of the rg351 in my hands and the portability of it is just better to me. The gpd is just huge and feels awkward to handle for a portable device. It's probably the same reason I like the ps vita over the 3ds.
Just copped one of these bad boys, can't wait to get it!
Dude. Love the detailed review, thank you!
2024. Just bought my 5th RG280V. I keep selling it, buying new handhelds and coming back to this one. Still my favorite one
It really speaks to how wholesome a channel you have that you can mention one-handed gaming as a plus for a device and it doesn't really feel like a setup for any kind of dirty jokes.
lol maybe it's because I mentioned the most wholesome TV show of all, Ted Lasso, in the same breath too :D
This was recommended out of nowhere. Pretty cool device and really nice video!
WOW! I really love the look of this console!
Man, it’s just so dang cuuuuuute. I’m just getting into an 351MP and can’t allow myself to indulge in this, but I’ve got an immediate crush on it.
It's definitely cute!
The RG280V is my main device. It fits nicely in my back pocket like a wallet and I can pick up and play it easily especially while I’m at work. I’ve beat FF5 and FF7 on it so far, working on Mario RPG 👍
That BitShifter intro took me back to the good old Destructoid days with Retroforce Go! Thanks for that! Also great video!
You're the reason why I bought the RG280V over the other emulators. I've loved it since then, I get so happy just looking at it. Played it so much next to a river 😁
Your killing it with these reviews. Grade A.
Thanks Paul!
This is freaking cool both the video and handheld console!
I love mine but the rg280m is by far the best anbernic to me. Best compromise for portability and comfort, and the screen color are the best
Your intro ROCKS dude!
Awesome, the 350P is a nice little device! Have you tried the Adam image on it?
