One thing I really like about this device is that for non native aspect ratio games, the OLED display will completely turn off the pixels that aren't in use. That'll make them a lot more playable in my eyes.
My dream Anbernic device: - Metal chassis - 4:3 OLED - Linux based (or dual boot) - HDMI out - Capable of emulating most/all GC & PS2 games Might be a bit of a unicorn but we are getting closer with the RG505 and RG353M. Those (plus Hall joysticks) are my dream specs as well but I doubt anyone will ever make a 4:3 OLED screen since there's basically no market for it except for these kinds of devices.
Another week goes by and another Anbernic handheld comes out! It seems like they release a new one every month! If anyone at Anbernic is listening: please do a clamshell mini computer with keyboard and controls at this price. That would be sweet!
These handhelds are great and all but the price creep is getting to the point where it's not viable for a lot of people. I feel that the $100 mark or under is the maximum for the mass consumer market especially when all of this can be done from a cheap mobile phone.
Get real. It's $100 for a PlayStation controller in Canada $100 and under is ridiculous. You can't expect quality. You get what you pay for. Honestly, you can't expect 3DS emulation touch screen. OLED etc most phones cannot emulate these games properly and you're getting thousands of games. The Nintendo switch that's 380 Canadian dollars isn't even OLED nor is the switch light for 269 Canadian dollars. This device is like 160 bucks US It's a great deal. $100 or under is unrealistic
@@cremekimmy4995 these makers don’t make any games unlike sony nintendo or Microsoft who can sell their hardware at a less price and make their profit back from games and various micro transactions so they likely to price above consumer market prices.

Complaints about not having stacked shoulder buttons or not having HDMI out is not what makes the RG505 horrible is very annoying when reading comments from others. The purpose of this handheld gaming device is specifically to be just that....a gaming handheld. Again, great review without downplaying the RG505!
The burn-in was so bad that Sony switched back to an LCD with the Vita 2K. (Could possibly have been a cost cutting exercise, but, I'm sure the complaints about burn-in weren't exactly bringing joy either).
As a sports gamer, I'm looking for a retro handheld that plays Dreamcast sports games like NFL 2K and NHL 2K series, or PS2 sports games like MVP Baseball 2005, some of the old Maddens, etc. I'd like to know if this has that capability or if there's a handheld out there that plays these games.
I have a Snapdragon 632 in my Moto G7 Optimo Maxx. It scores about 140k the last time I checked AnTuTu. The Tiger in this thing clears 200k pretty easily. My phone will run most Dreamcast games, except for the Windows CE based games like Sega Rally, at 1X with no skips. As a fellow sports gamer, it does have some slight frame rate drops at times in 2K football and there's a weird effect where the ice inside the opponent's goal in NHL 2K2 is black because I have to turn down the filter to make it stay at 60 FPS, but nothing that makes it unplayable. This Tiger CPU in the Anbernic should run DC without any hacks or weirdness. I doubt it'll run PS2 sports games if it can't run GT4. The cheap option for that is an old flagship phone with an SD845 or better + telescoping controller to make a pseudo handheld, or, if you've got money, an AYN Odin handheld if you want to stay with Android. Of note; NHL 2K2 on DC is not nearly as good as you remember. Well made; but frustrating. They couldn't quite figure out defense so they way overpowered the goalies to compensate. I always thought I simply sucked; but no, it was an actual decision that was made by the devs, Treyarch.
The 505 would be a slam dunk for me if it wasn't for the shoulder buttons being so far inward that I would have to move my hand around the console itself to hit the button. I'm sure it's fine if you don't need to use them, but just doesn't make much sense. The Switch style shoulder buttons are really good, so should have just gone that direction. Still a really great console overall.
Personally, I don't need one of these cheaper emulation devices anymore. Since making this comment, I have started collecting NDS/3DS consoles, and have also bought a Steam Deck. If there is anything that I can't emulate with those 3 devices, then I have my 5600X/3080 PC. I also have a hacked switch that I really need to update Atmosphere on, but that's unused at the moment, sadly.

This is the chip I always said that should have been in the RG552 . The Linux dual boot feature was holding it back from using this more powerful chip. The lack of HDMI/USB-Video out is a massive fail and why I ordered the RP3+ instead.
I use Magic Dosbox on a Moto G7 Optimo Maxx, which on paper is somewhat less powerful than this, and it's fine. I also have a tablet with a much, much weaker MTK quad core CPU and it'll run many DOS games no problem with a little tweaking. I expect that this'll be fine from a performance standpoint. The only annoyance is likely going to be setting up the controls or trying to use the onscreen keyboard. For the money I'd get an Alldocube 10 inch KPad Android tablet. Similar CPU and you'll have room for both the onscreen keyboard and seeing the content. It's currently $89 on Amazon. Maybe get a keyboard (keyboard case?) and then use the whole screen for whatever you're playing? Heck, add a normal controller too and you'll still be money ahead. I love this little Anbernic, I just don't think it's the right tool for DOS even though it'll run the software just fine.
The best chip bang for buck i think should be SD778+ it can handle any emulator and for aethersx2 gow can go up to 1.5x Those company who make handhelds should use this chip next year
Great chip, I’d even be happy with a push for using older 8 series between the 855 and 870, there must be thousands from traded in phones from the last few years that would be great to repurpose as android gaming handhelds or mini consoles.
Next year I think. I have an 8gb Odin Lite and can play a lot of Wii. But it takes a bit of tweaking. The Steamdeck does it fine. But for an arm cpu, wait for the Odin2 to hit in 2023.
Hey hey over here 😀 I was wondering if you would do reviews on the gaming Chromebooks. I keep see commercials on UA-cam. Gaming on a Chromebook and want to see if they can do more. Thank you
Love having an OLED screen! But it's a bit too small, and I also wish it was 1080p for better game streaming. Unfortunately, the leap to 1080p devices is huge in price.
Two unique color schemes that I would have used for the RG505. Pearl white shell, silver ANBERNIC logo, chrome triggers and black buttons. Or, tan shell, gold ANBERNIC logo, gold triggers and black buttons.
Hi ETA! Long time viewer with a question I just can't seem to find an answer for. Does this RG505 or the Retroid Pocket 3+ run Diablo Immortal decently at all? (Even on low settings?) Thanks in advance!
I'm looking real hard at anbernic right now. I've purchased a raspberry pi 3 a few years ago for your reviews of it and my desire for playing my old school games. Now I'm looking for a decent portable version. Those RG505 is sounding pretty solid especially if it can emulate Dreamcast. Can it emulate GameCube too?
The T618 was never popular when Powkiddy first used it in a handheld and whilst things are better, I'm not sure that this will be around for long, let alone future supported. I expect handhelds to come along very soon with the RK3588S SOC, which will make this look ancient in comparison, so I would wait a few months to get real power and performance.
If power and performance are your sole target. My target was having fun with PSP and Dreamcast games on a handheld and thus I bought RP3+ (and wisely skipped RP3).
Even though I want more power from a device like this, I would impulse buy a rg505m (these specs/screen with a rg552 body). That said, I already ordered a rp3+ 2 weeks ago and it’s on the way…and I own a Steam Deck, hacked Vita’s, new 3ds and Switch oled.
Oh. Wow. You are just as bad as me with cell phones 🤣🤣😂. I've gotten WAY better, but I hope this doesn't become my new interest/collection- but I'm so fascinated by these devices and what they do! 😩
Anbernic needs to set themselves apart. Now it's not about how cool the handheld is, it's more about what it can accomplish and how well it can accomplish it. Simply making a new handheld that can play one or two PS2 games and calling it powerful will not be enough anymore. I will say, A 2Ghz processor with 2 A75 cores is a good start to becoming a better offering. Price, I don't really care about, just as long as it doesn't get to be like some of their other offerings where you're paying three times as much for something you can find similarly specced from one of their competitors.
I will say... The price isn't bad for this unit, even without the pre-order $10 discount. The only thing I see so far that I don't care for is the switch lite color scheme. Don't care for the gray, teal and yellow selections. Would've been happier with something a little different. Maybe a black model with maybe yellow or blue lettering on black buttons. Or even really anything that doesn't copy the nintendo color schemes. Maybe they'll make a metal version for those of us that like that sort of thing. I wouldn't mind spending another $40 to $50 for a metal frame (& some custom buttons).
Hello, I have a question. I have a note 10 plus with a Kishi control, should I buy one of those retro console or is it enough with the note 10 plus to do the same thing you are doing?
Take a look at the mainboard all the correct circuitry is there for hdmi out all it needs is the port soldered on. And a hole for it to come out the case. It looks literally like it was just missed to rush out the console.
The more I watch videos on these type of devices, the more conflicted I get. Originally I wanted the RG353V because of the nostalgia Gameboy form factor. But the RP3+ and this RG505 are very enticing for their performance at very similar prices. I'm at the point where I'm even looking at things like the stacked triggers on the RP3+ as a pro in it's favor, but the side volume/home buttons negate that. Where the 505 on the other hand, has parallel triggers which seem uncomfortable, but it has the OLED screen. I'm very new to this entire handheld emulator device community - do these companies release new devices on a regular scheduled cycle?
Same here and I'm totally lost among them until today i made my mind after endless comparison and i picked up rg505 today, i think it's the best among the rest for the price and screen quality
They should have used the diminsity 700 chip its more powerful and it's not an expensive chipset it's a Mali device but the 700 would have given single core 544 multicore 1604 the chip they using is close to a Snapdragon 665
Great video im completely new to handheld retro gaming but ive ordered the rg 505 will this be ready to play right out of the box? Will it have games already preinstalled?
So, interesting discovery on my Anbernic 505....Xbox game pass. There was no response from the triggers.....but, with the recent update (if you keep the control settings to Switch and not Xbox) - the triggers now work. Weird, but happy
so I picked up a google pixel 4 XL and I have an ipega 9083 would what I have beat this device? I got the phone renewed for about the same price (minus the tax) from amazon.
I actually prefer the design of the Gray RG505 with the triggers inner and outer triggers swapped of course. I do however, absolutely hate the Switch color schemes (not actually the shell colors but the white buttons scheme I hate). Which is why I prefer the Gray RG505. ANBERNIC should use their better color schemes in newer editions of this model as well as their upcoming consoles. Use the color schemes from the RG300X or their RG351V. Even a woodgrain version of this RG505 would look nice.
It's a competitor to other "Retro Gaming Handheld Consoles" like the Retroid Pocket 3+. These things are designed for emulating old school console game first and foremost.
Competitor to the steam deck, haha nice joke. Nah, the deck is a handheld pc. Those Chinese gadgets are more close to phones and tablets. Another league.
Sorry to port the bad news but don't hope a lot of improvements in performance with the custom firmwares, Unisoc is clearly not know for they openness but more for keeping all the documentation for them, custom firmware can improve the interface but for the performance or see a good Linux firmware, I have not a lot of hope, it is not Rockship unfortunately.
I'd love to see you test the PS2 emulation with the games Ratchet and Clank 2, preferebly during an arena battle, and Dirge of Cerberus, most devices struggle with the first part of this game. And maybe even BLACK.
I'm going to send mine back when I get it. Was hoping for more emulation than just NES, SNES, Dreamcast and other older consoles. I wanted to see more Gamecube emulation but the fact that it only plays "some" GC games and "some" PS2 games, I just don't want to be bothered with something so underpowered for the money I shelled out. I know, less than 200 dollars doesn't seem like a lot of money, but I live in Thailand and that's like a month's rent or going shopping twice a month. I don't make US money or UK money, so paying this much for it not handling the consoles I loved the most, I just don't see the point, so I will not even open it and send it back for a full refund. Tired of these companies putting all these consoles on their site and boxes that they can handle only to find out it's all lies.
No separate OTG port, Only 1 SD card slot, no HDMI out and why SOOO much bezel Anbernic??? I don't remember the gaming community asking for MORE bezel. =/ PS2 and Game Cube are ALMOST but not quite there yet on these 2 devices. I will wait to see what 2023 brings. great review =)
I feel we are so close to having a device that can play almost all PS2 games. When they can I will definitely buy one of those. I just ordered a RP3+ as a stop gap until then.
Just to say ETA, HDMI is a feature I favor the most. I still have the likpok hyper mirror which you reviewed a long time ago on which I made a decision to buy and it is very good. Still working after all those years. Very useful with my ayaneo air, steamdeck and other hdmi devices.
It is more powerful than the RG552 but plays more or less the same systems. It does play PSP, Dreamcast and Saturn better in Android but the RG552 has Linux where the performance has been increasing but will never be as powerful as this cpu.
I love the Switch Lite look of this handheld. If Vita emulation was further along, I'd entertain getting this to replace my Vita. But as it stands, I can't justify those device for myself.

I love this little Anbernic, I just don't think it's the right tool for DOS even though it'll run the software just fine.
Way better looking than the steam deck
I was going to comment about the RG505 vs the Pocket 3+, but could almost sense that it was going to come up somewhere in the video lol
The best chip bang for buck i think should be SD778+ it can handle any emulator and for aethersx2 gow can go up to 1.5x
Those company who make handhelds should use this chip next year
They slowly upgrade and will abuse whatever chipset they have for the moment...
Great chip, I’d even be happy with a push for using older 8 series between the 855 and 870, there must be thousands from traded in phones from the last few years that would be great to repurpose as android gaming handhelds or mini consoles.
I,ve been waiting for something that can emulate wii just fine
Next year I think. I have an 8gb Odin Lite and can play a lot of Wii. But it takes a bit of tweaking. The Steamdeck does it fine. But for an arm cpu, wait for the Odin2 to hit in 2023.
What wallpaper engine you using?
Hey hey over here 😀 I was wondering if you would do reviews on the gaming Chromebooks. I keep see commercials on UA-cam. Gaming on a Chromebook and want to see if they can do more. Thank you
I’ve been looking into picking one up recently
Love having an OLED screen! But it's a bit too small, and I also wish it was 1080p for better game streaming. Unfortunately, the leap to 1080p devices is huge in price.
Two unique color schemes that I would have used for the RG505. Pearl white shell, silver ANBERNIC logo, chrome triggers and black buttons. Or, tan shell, gold ANBERNIC logo, gold triggers and black buttons.
I need that animated wallpaper app or website link
finally, portable devices that can do ppsspp perfectly that aren't android phones ❤❤❤
Nice too see some PS2 games working ok on this.
Are you able to play the Resistance Trilogy game on a PS3 emulation.
( Resistance fall of man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 on this awesome device)
How does this device with with Lailunch Box Vig Box on it? Can you a video on handheld devices before Christmas?
The T618 was never popular when Powkiddy first used it in a handheld and whilst things are better, I'm not sure that this will be around for long, let alone future supported. I expect handhelds to come along very soon with the RK3588S SOC, which will make this look ancient in comparison, so I would wait a few months to get real power and performance.
If power and performance are your sole target. My target was having fun with PSP and Dreamcast games on a handheld and thus I bought RP3+ (and wisely skipped RP3).
Dude waiting for the game force ace!
Switch sized Hall effect joysticks… Does that imply that those joysticks are out in the world somewhere and could be put into actual switch joycons?
Dude just get what you want. If device you bought is good for your needa that is great
They should have used the diminsity 700 chip its more powerful and it's not an expensive chipset it's a Mali device but the 700 would have given single core 544 multicore 1604 the chip they using is close to a Snapdragon 665
What's with the spinning gem during GC mario kart?
So what device do you buy to play GameCube then?
Great video im completely new to handheld retro gaming but ive ordered the rg 505 will this be ready to play right out of the box? Will it have games already preinstalled?
No it won't, you'll need to download ROM's, which are really easy to download though
128 gb ve 256 gb seçenekleri var onlarda oyunlar yüklü sadece google play i kurmak gerek kolay bu cihaz çok iyi
What's with the emerald that appears in the right side of the screen in Mario kart on the map
I would LOVE to go buy this, but the link DOES NOT WORK..... apparently anbernic doesn't have a website? lol actualy it's just down
Bonjour as-tu prévu de faire une vidéo tuto réglage des émulateurs ? Merci d'avance
So, interesting discovery on my Anbernic 505....Xbox game pass. There was no response from the triggers.....but, with the recent update (if you keep the control settings to Switch and not Xbox) - the triggers now work. Weird, but happy
How do you add games to this device? The SD card is protected…
Where can you get it in Europe ? Great review !
so I picked up a google pixel 4 XL and I have an ipega 9083 would what I have beat this device? I got the phone renewed for about the same price (minus the tax) from amazon.
I actually prefer the design of the Gray RG505 with the triggers inner and outer triggers swapped of course. I do however, absolutely hate the Switch color schemes (not actually the shell colors but the white buttons scheme I hate). Which is why I prefer the Gray RG505. ANBERNIC should use their better color schemes in newer editions of this model as well as their upcoming consoles. Use the color schemes from the RG300X or their RG351V. Even a woodgrain version of this RG505 would look nice.
any way to run pc games on this device, even though it's based on android OS? Or I have to get a device that is windows compatible or linux based?
Is this a competitor to the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck or those newish era gamer phones like Black Shark, Redmagic and ROG?
It's a competitor to other "Retro Gaming Handheld Consoles" like the Retroid Pocket 3+. These things are designed for emulating old school console game first and foremost.
Competitor to the steam deck, haha nice joke. Nah, the deck is a handheld pc. Those Chinese gadgets are more close to phones and tablets. Another league.
Can you make videos for screen quality? My screen is very bad quality can you show How to do it, please?
Do have comparison of this from rg405?
This is almost perfect, I just want a non-android version or dual boot, and any sort of video out.
Sadly it also can't run black and doc properly.
Which is the more powerful system, the 505 or 405?
Thanks!
Can this retro play dragon ball z budokai tenkaichi 3 or infinite worlds on ps2 emulator? That my big question ..
I want an ambernic like this with the snapdragon 8 gen 2 and an aomled screen.
While I'm at it, can either the 405 or 505 play 3DO games or Fate: Grand Order? Thank y'all in advance for your replies
is this okay for pokemon games on 3ds? im thinking about getting this for my son
Are there games install out the box?
fun fact, Vita3K is working on android emulations
Did this device come with preloaded game?
I just bought the 353m. Kinda salty cause I would've liked this one as its more powerful, but the size of the 353 is what I love about it.
Can do a comparison with the nintendo switch running android?
Its already on the way.😉
No separate OTG port, Only 1 SD card slot, no HDMI out and why SOOO much bezel Anbernic??? I don't remember the gaming community asking for MORE bezel. =/
PS2 and Game Cube are ALMOST but not quite there yet on these 2 devices. I will wait to see what 2023 brings. great review =)
Whats bezel?
@@DarkCode The plastic around the screen thats says anbernic
I wonder how this compares to the Logitech G-Cloud?
I feel we are so close to having a device that can play almost all PS2 games. When they can I will definitely buy one of those. I just ordered a RP3+ as a stop gap until then.
It will need to be as powerful as Snapdragon 865 or better
The odin is capable of ps2 and gamecube, just gotta handle the fact it isnt pocketable sadly
@@sauce_legend1186 How well does GameCube Auto Modellista play on it?
Just wondering how it will do with PS Remote Play!
ToF, but I've played Arena Breakout and WZM for benchmarks testing.
what is that green jewel on screen?
Is the win600 not more powerful if not as appealing
Just to say ETA, HDMI is a feature I favor the most. I still have the likpok hyper mirror which you reviewed a long time ago on which I made a decision to buy and it is very good. Still working after all those years. Very useful with my ayaneo air, steamdeck and other hdmi devices.
For a second there I thought that was a Nintendo Switch Lite. Lol! 😅
does the usb type c has display out?
Where can I get that screen saver?
This is more powerful than the RG552? I own a ton of these, but I don’t fully understand the processors.
It is more powerful than the RG552 but plays more or less the same systems. It does play PSP, Dreamcast and Saturn better in Android but the RG552 has Linux where the performance has been increasing but will never be as powerful as this cpu.
I wish they released it in metal. Just bought RG353M because it seems way nicer from a build quality perspective
I want this one but it seems by next month a new version will be out.
Do you know the game list on the rg505 and how do I save the games???
There are save states built into the emulator
@@Rampage1979 thanks
@@Rampage1979 Does the rg505 come with preinstalled games?
12nm and this still flies
Imagine in a few years 6nm and helio G99 like soc in this form factor
The new TK R1 uses the G99 :) yet to be released though
@@sebastiento9695 too bad it's not using oled like this
I love the Switch Lite look of this handheld. If Vita emulation was further along, I'd entertain getting this to replace my Vita. But as it stands, I can't justify those device for myself.
What usb does this device use?
Can you change the wallpaper?
