I was stationed at a missile base in Montana. Had a tarp over my motorcycle and saw the snow. Except it wasn’t snow. It was 70º. The ash got up between the tarp and gas tank and sanded the paint off in a couple of spots. Then I heard the news. About an inch of ash 700 miles away!

My family had friends who had just moved out to Missoula(?) Montana a couple years before it blew. They told my parents that the ashfall was so thick, that people’s car air filters were getting choked with ash, and their cars were shutting down.

Technically what buried the stuff during the eruption was the result of a Lahar. If it had been a Lava or a Pyroclastic flow that A-Frame would have burned. I knew the geologist that died during the eruption. Also technically the volcano is still active and being monitored.

Cool video... Brings back memories. I was stationed at Mc Chord AFB near Tacoma, Wa. when Mt St Helens blew up. They sent all the aircraft to other bases around the country, because they didn't want ash to get into the engines. Most of us aircraft mechanics had a mini vacation because of it... A volcation, you might say!

Dude, Mt St Helens lava is Dacite.. It doesn't "flow". There are no "lava flows" anywhere from Mt St Helens, there are some lava tubes nearby from a much older volcano, but Mt St Helens just don't do that. The video you showed of lava "flowing" was from Hawaii.. not Washington.

Way to go, Jax! My cats would play with their mice like that! I figured it was the laws of nature taking over my cats and let them alone with their prey. One of my cats would launch the mouse across the room, the smart mouse would then run for its life! Thanks for taking us up to Mt. St. Helens! I remember the eruption well, even tho I was pretty young. Seeing the side of the volcano slide down is incredible! Being a fan of all kinds of museums, I really enjoyed seeing the old bordello! Keep finding those great pearls of museums to share with us! Take care and God bless your travels!

I visited Mt St. Helens in 1981 and things sure have changed. A creek had been filled in down to the freeway by that parallels the coast and the road up to the mountain was open only a short distance to a ridge where we could look at the damage. We weren't allowed further up because of concern that more could happen. It would be fun to go back and see it again.

That was very interesting seeing Mt. St. Helens today.
I was in the 4th or 5th grade when it happened living in Mesa, Arizona at the time and I can remember they brought a television into our classroom so we could watch the news of what was happening with Mt. St. Helens. We didn't get any ash where I lived from it.
But in 1993 I was trucking up to Kent, Washington and bought a souvenir that has ash from a few different distances from the eruption.

I was 7 yrs old and in the middle of Sunday morning service in Yakima, WA. when Mount St. Helens Blew her top back in the early 80s. I believe my mom still has some ash from when Mt. St. Helens blew. I remember it being bright and sunny when we went to church and then it being pitch black to the point that you could barely see 5 feet in front of your car going home from church services because they let out early because of the fact there was SOO MUCH ash coming down that they wanted everyone to be able to get home safely and not get stuck trying to get home.

  • @cavemanjack3078

Mount Saint Helen’s blew up on Sunday, May 18, 1980 and more than 300 miles away in Spokane Washington it was completely dark at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The dark gray ash came down like snow and we could barely breathe. Most places around here had ash 3 inches deep on everything, we were washing shoveling and scooping ash for the rest of the year. Semi-truck loads of facemasks were brought into the Pacific Northwest of the US and everybody wore masks for weeks and weeks just to breathe. Tens of thousands of cars trucks and equipment had engines destroyed because this Ash got sucked in and plugged the air filters. People had engines destroyed because engine air filtering systems leaked and got this volcanic ash sucked into the engines destroying them in a matter of minutes. I was only 18 and it’s still fresh in my memory.

    • @pnwester2697
      @pnwester2697 5 років тому

Caveman Jack I remember all that. As the crow flies, we’re 40 miles west of the mountain. We didn’t get that much ash until the next week and then we got dumped on. Really dumped on. Panty hose on the air cleaners of cars, lawn mowers any any other gas engine.

Remember the eruption clearly. We were living in Gladstone Oregon. I was in the house with the kids, my husband was washing the top of our travel trailer. Everything started shaking and a huge kaboom. We could see the eruption in the distance. Quickly closed all the windows, brought the pets inside, closed the flue to the chimney. When it was all over the whole yard, cars, everything was covered in ash.

I was at work in Renton on the day she blew, clear sunny day, but in the distance this huge, looked like the largest thunder cloud I can remember. everyone at work was commenting on that huge cloud on the horizon. that was the ash cloud. will never forget that.

Was at Mount St Helens this past June. The movie at the observation center was very informative and the ranger talks are free. There wasn't much lava at all when the mountain exploded. But lots of ash which fell from the sky and huge land and mud slides from instantaneous melting snow from the heat of the eruption. The tree in the observation center with bark on only one side was 9 miles from the mountain. All the devastation you saw at the observation center happened in 184 seconds. There was so much force and debris it was like forcing 2 elephants thru 1 square meter per second. And for reference, the observation center is 4 miles from Mount St Helens.
Thanks for taking me there again. This eruption was a very big deal. There was volcanic ash from the eruption that made it to Minnesota. Railroad cars still had ash on them when arriving in Minnesota.
Makes me think about the super volcano under Yellowstone.
Keep up the great work Eric!

I went up to Washington to visit a friend in 1986 and we went to the overlook - but couldn't make out anything due to overcast. At that time, there was very little in the way of parking, and that building wasn't built yet. At that time, the devastation was still evident with downed trees, and mud choked creeks as we made our way up to the lookout.

eh...my first cat was a total warrior and she was the runt in litter. all the freaking time she hunted and she was very well fed by me. if I yelled at her dropping off dead squirrel, birds and rabbits at my doorstep then she would do it more often.
she had it in her head that she was giving back, providing us humans with food and if I yelled she wasn't giving us enough! if I didn't say anything to her then shed only do it 1-3 times a week.
she was an indoor/ outdoor cat and had many litters. my only approval was to teach her kittens how to hunt before were adopted. and she never them. just delivered the corpse to me. YUCK!
one time I was my best friends house and we were laying down on separate couches watching TV. her patio door was open so dogs could run in and out. one dog apparently killed a bird... ran inside and leaped up and dropped the dead bird from its mouth onto my friends chest!!! lmfao!!! omg... no matter how disgusting that was... the shock from my friend etc still makes me laugh hard today!
same thing in my eyes... dog was giving to his tribe ... helping out with food.
they don't know any better. many are raised to hunt. its their instincts.

A short story about MT St Helens. My wife and I were visiting the provincial museum in Edmonton, Alberta and one of the artifacts was a pedestal type sysmometer. I was studying it and the needle started jumping....I asked a nearby security guard if it does that very often and he was flabbergasted as he had never seen it move before. We went back to our hotel that evening and on the news was the coverage of Mount saint Helens eruption.

The last time I was there was May 17th 1980. It was a Saturday and our family decided to drive down from Maple Valley Wa. to check it out. We drove up to the red zone perimeter and there were a lot of people like us hoping to see something. The mountain spit out a tiny steam cloud that was it.. We went with my aunt uncle and cousins and us kids were begging to camp out. My aunt and uncle brought their camper but my aunt had set a timer on their stove to start cooking a roast that night so we had to go home.
The next morning we couldn't beleive the mou rain blew.
I've never wanted to go back.....

my flight from Seattle to Cincinnati back in 1997... our pilot from Delta airlines went off course just to fly over it and even announced he's going to fly lower than aloud to so we could see it as close as possible!!!
that was the best flight I have ever taken!!!!! lol
then he announced he's going to speed over the air limit to make up the time so that we land at airport on time. :) he took at least 40 minutes off course to do this and ask ahead of time if any objections. everyone was like heck yeah!!!!
I hope he didn't get into trouble. he even did an extra circle around it. I don't remember exacts but we landed about 15 minutes late
I would love to hike through there and even be at one erupting that safe to see the lava.

I remember my saint Hellen’s like it was yesterday. I was at moffett field. We used to fly dfw’s over that mountain range all the time. I remember flying over the mountain after it was all cleared out I believe probably six months or so after the event. The scarring of the mountain made me gasp. Between that all the new events it is the most devastating event in my life time. I thank GOD it was such rural area. If it happens around SeaTac it will be epic in human history.
