    Those big green fruits are Hedge Apples or Osage Oranges. It's a shrubby tree that grows along hedge lines. The trees don't get very tall. The fruits are inedible and are used in decorative crafts. The tree was a favorite among Indians for making archery bows.

    Hi Eric - When it's going to be below freezing, I always put a work light or a small 200 watt heater and a remote thermometer in the water bay to avoid frozen pipes. It's easier to prevent them from freezing that it is to thaw them out. GOOD SAVE ON THE NEW MAC! Hope it all goes well.

    • @GodMadeMeStupid
      @GodMadeMeStupid 4 роки тому +1

      I have been thinking about this kind of thing. I wonder if the inside of the RV is warm, your water lines won't break, but then your tanks still might?

    • @octavidalforcedge.4045
      @octavidalforcedge.4045 4 роки тому +1

      Well if you have RVs that are not able to cope with frozen temperatures and possibly you do not have an RV that is sufficient to be on the road. However there are RVs that can endure through cold weather. A lot RV not necessarily the case.

    • @cajun_and_zydeco_music
      @cajun_and_zydeco_music 4 роки тому +5

      I was thinking the same thing in terms of serious damage to the plumbing system of the RV. Some people don't seem to appreciate the nature of how RVs are constructed in terms of water lines and so on. People can clearly grasp what happens to water when it freezes: it expands. In a closed (water) system, any expansion of water by freezing has to go somewhere. There are lots and lots of fittings and lines that carry water throughout an RV. A burst pipe or fitting can cause hundreds if not thousands of dollars damage. I would be extremely reluctant to bring an RV into such a cold environment. Hopefully, when the water pump and the rest thaw out, there will not be any resulting damage.

    • @livinincalifornia
      @livinincalifornia 4 роки тому +4

      I hear the plastic fittings are the weak point. The PEX tubing can handle expansion in freezing, it's the fitting and connectors that are a non-forgiving plastic that break.

    Maclura pomifera, commonly known as the Osage orange, hedge, or hedge apple tree is a small deciduous tree or large shrub, typically growing to 8 to 15 metres (30-50 ft) tall. The distinctive fruit, from a multiple fruit family, is roughly spherical, bumpy, 8 to 15 centimetres (3-6 in) in diameter, and turns bright yellow-green in the fall. Although Osage oranges are commonly believed to repel insects, there is insufficient evidence to support this. Research has shown that compounds extracted from the fruit, when concentrated, may repel insects. However, the naturally occurring concentrations of these compounds in the fruit are far too low to make the fruit an effective insect repellent.

    The yellow-green fruit, commonly called hedge apples, is produced by the Osage-orange tree. The female trees produce 3-to-5 inch-diameter fruit which ripens in September and October and falls to the ground. Other cultivated members of the Osage-orange family include the mulberry and fig.
    I have heard many people say hedge apples are great for pest control. They put them around the foundation of their homes or in the basement to deter cockroaches, spiders, boxelder bugs and crickets.

    Eric, this is your new friend, Dawn and those are from the Osage Orange Tree or as we call them Hedge Apples.
    Here's a published piece that best explains them...
    Place whole hedge apples in areas where spiders are seen. Set the hedge apples on a piece of tinfoil or in a small bowl to prevent the juice from ruining flooring, cabinetry or other materials in your home. Place hedge apples about two feet from areas of spider infestations.
    Cut the fruit in half or crush it with a hammer to get quicker results. Opening the fruit immediately exposes pests to the milk of the fruit. Place the exposed pieces in a dish. Set the dish in the area where you most often see spiders.
    Dispose of hedge apples once the majority of the green skin has disappeared. Hedge apples will last two to three months in a cool room or area.

    You might consider getting some heat tape. It’s made for keeping pipes from freezing. You wrap it around the pipes and plug it in. If you wrapped it around that water pump over night, I bet it would thaw.

    i always used to dump my tanks if the temperature was under 25 degrees, and the only part of my rv that ever froze was the water pump filter cracked once. so if it gets too cold i dump my fresh water and winterize all my lines. it would not be fun fixing a cracked water line or tank. im in washington so its rarely under 25 degrees or snow here as you would know.

    Eric, the tree you were referring to has many names. Some call it Bois D'Arc, Osage orange, hedge apples ... the wood on this tree is extremely strong and extremely hot when burned! I believe it is poisonous so no! Don't eat it! The hedge apples are believed to keep away bugs. They give off a pungent smell and really stink once they rot. We had these in my back yard growing up in Oklahoma. They are very hardy trees and can be hard to kill. They are heat, cold and drought resistant. If you cut them down they will grow back. Farmers in the 1900s planted them in fence lines to act as natural fence posts. The trees lasted longer than the barbed wire. Have fun on your adventure and stay safe.
