+Pauline D'Auteuil I don't even know if they tattoo anymore honestly. Trust your instinct and if you feel like a tattoo artist is being shady, take your business somewhere else.
With the first tattoo story, you really should have made a point of saying that you already had tattoos instead of just leaving and not bothering. She doesn't sound like she was being rude as much as she just thought she was helping you out, you could have helped her learn something new if you hadn't just laid down and left.
+Millie Skittles Yeah, I think the person thought that you don´t have any tattoos.... but another thing is that some tattoo artists dont do tattoos on your hands..meaning that somewhere where you can´t hide your tattoo... like hands or face etc.
Sadie Delin but she was told "first get one in other place". The artists that have the rule of no tattoos past the cuff they usually just say is straightforward. Probably as she say, she and her friend just looked young and trying to get their first tattoo
they don't want to give you a tat on your hand unless you have other tats because it hurts more and is pretty extreme and unhideable. i am sure if you had gone lol, let me show you my tats! she would have been like ok great!
My friend who owns a tattoo shop said that this is like a rite of passage thing. Artists generally won't give hand tattoos until someone has a few others first and they don't like that its become really trendy to have hand tattoos (some people feel insulted that their art is being reduced to a trend). I'm sure that if they explained that had already been extensively tattooed elsewhere, the woman would likely have been more accomodating.
I got refused for a foot tattoo because "they hurt, so I don't perform them" when I had previously gotten three other foot tattoos and informed him that I sat like I rock for all of them. I think the artist just had a fear of feet.
Well not really is will depend how resistant you are I guess. I had a hard time to not laughing the whole time for my neck tattoo so I was stuck with a big smile on my face .When he ask after how much tattoo I have and said that was my first he was very impress for some reason, maybe because I'm not a big girl...The worst I get during the tattoo happen once and felt like a nurse give me a vaccine it felt like a little pinch .So I get more tats for sure because it don't do much for me ;)
As someone who is married to a tattoo shop owner, I can tell you that artists "refuse" tattoos usually as damage control, as most people will complain if they fade away (finger or lip tattoos) or if they will regret in the future (couples). When people are told nothing can be done to fix these, they leave bad reviews, don't refer people, etc. Anything to hurt the business to justify their bad decision that was warned against. Tattoo artists want to make money and refusing tattoos is taking money out of their pocket so it's not something they do for fun
I worked at a shop for a summer and one of the artists would refuse almost everyone that he deemed "unworthy" of his art. And if he did agree to a tattoo idea he'd up the price to the point most people went elsewhere. Recently I wanted my zodiac symbol on my under boob(I got it) but it was hard to find an artist who would tattoo a symbol (Gemini) ♊️ for some reason? My friend wanted small heart outlines on her index fingers and 4 shops refused her because they said it wouldn't look good/she couldn't handle it. She has a half sleeve on both arms and I find it so weird when artists do that. So many shops around here refuse basically anything for the smallest reasons
+Maighdean Gemini The thing with the cute little line tattoos that throws artists off is that it doesn't show off their skill. You walk out with their work, and that little 10 minute line work doesn't really do their name any favors. It seems weird to turn away work, but I can't say I blame them. Plus it's boring.
+Liz King but the thing is that if someone just wants a simple little line work piece then why is that so hard to do? So what if it doesn't show off their skill, some people don't want detailed pieces.
I like that even though you've had shitty experiences you never put the artists name out there or call anyone out. You just use it as a learning experience and try to help other people out! That's really cool of you
That last guy sounds so greedy and unprofessional. If he works with you for 4 hours but keeps you in the shop 8 because he keeps doing other things to avoid working, he cannot demand to be paid for 8. He would've smoked those cigarettes, eaten that sandwich, taken that consultation if you weren't there, so why should you pay for having your time wasted? I hope he lost that job.
Milk Duds my first tattoo the guy took a while to actually start the tattoo probably an hour and an half and he took two 10 minute cigarette breaks. so the whole thing ended up being 3 hours instead of about an hour and a half of work
Milk Duds aside from that, what jank ass tattoo shops charge by the hour?? Oh yeah, jank ass un peofessional shops, so dont go to them?? Pay by the job like normal??
A lot of artists refuse hand tattoos on people unless they have 100% job security and are aware of what the consequences could be, socially. she wasnt being rude lol she was assuming you'd never gotten one before and only wanted a hand one to look cool
...look it up. there are many artists who wont do from the cuff down, and collar up. for that exact reason, it can affect a job. and if you dont have job security, they dont want to fuck you over.
Morgan O'Brien-Bledsoe oh my lord it is not an assumption made based on rude judgement, its an artist looking out for someone lol they dont want someone to not be able to get a job because they didn't research it
Woodchip You have to be 18 years old to get a tattoo. At 18 you are a grown adult and get to make decisions for yourself. I don't know about you but my decisions are mine to make not anyone else's.
I have to say, I agree with not getting the hand/finger tattoos before having several other visible tattoos. She was just doing what's in someone's best interest, because it's a 'job killer'. And a lot of artists get shit from other artists in the community for tattooing obvious places on non-tattooed people. My artist always gets shit for tattooing faces/fingers from other artists, regardless of the client's profession or how tattooed they are. However she should've just asked you if you had other tattoos.. rather than just judging you with your coats on. Also, a lot of artists don't do certain body parts. I know inner lip is one of those body parts..I had a lot of trouble finding someone to tattoo my palms. A lot of people turned me away or made up an excuse not to do it. It's just one of those things that's dependable on an artists comfort level/skill level. Sounds like the artist who refused your inner lip tattoo just didn't have the skill to do it, so she made up some bullshit excuse not to do it. The 'couple tattoo' excuse is bogus. AND that last dude sounds like an egotistical asshole tbh. I'd love to know who he is so I can never get tattooed by him.
You know it's interesting, I've had a similar experience with places all over the US. It seems like there needs to be more training with how to talk to clients. You can get all sorts of info from a client if you are kind to them. I remember being harassed by artists because I wanted something small. And I'm not a mean person, I just wanted to start with something small, to see how it would feel, but no, it must be gigantic. I was told to go screw because I wanted the outline of a leaf on my wrist, the size of a quarter. I was told it had to be the size of a post it or it would melt. My other small tattoos haven't melted. So yeah, always check the reps of the artists first.
I have 2 finger tattoos and they are the only ones that i have, the artist told me about the pain and how i would need to get it touched up and i agreed. If you get refused a hand tattoo he's just not qualified for it or he's an ass
True but my first 2 and only tats are on my left hand. They had no problem with it and I don't regret it and my employers have no problems with that or my piercings
Ellie F uhhmmm no? They offer a service that people pay money for, its fucked for them to decline them just because of placement, aside feom that she asumed they have never had gotten tattooed before. Which is wrong. You sir are also wrong
I had an artist refuse me because be he essentially didn't think I couldn't handle the pain. He was a dick about it. I went home, redesigned the art, and took my businesses elsewhere.
Story 1 - why didn't you just say "thanks for your concern, but we've both got multiple tattoos and are sure we won't regret it" Kind of made a mountain out of a mole hill on that one.
My thoughts exactly. Story #1 is dumb because it's the artist just covering her ass there. If she really wanted the tattoo on her hands, she should have had the balls to disclose that she's tatted out instead of get huffy. Hand tattoos are often referred to as "job killers" because of obvious reasons.
She probably was taken aback or maybe got anxiety or something. I have anxiety and I’d probably have just said okay and left. It doesn’t sound like she made a big deal out of it (or a mountain out of a mole hill). She just decided to leave. How is that causing a scene?
exactly the analogy making a mountain out of a mole hill doesnt work for that story at all. just saying ok and leaving isnt making it a big deal at all. maybe she was taken back by the bluntness. i still think she should have shown her past tattoos to her but it wasnt making a scene just because she didnt.
Most tattoo artists are extremely iffy on hand tattoos because they don't want the responsibility of ruining someone's career and finger tattoos are never guaranteed because they fade really fast
The first girl didn't even say that you weren't allowed the tattoo, she did her job at pointing out that you should try your pain tolerance before tattooing sensitive places, if you didn't have tattoos before (yes I know you have but she didn't see it) you could be really sensitive to the pain and it would be too much to tattoo the finger.. you could've just said politely that you are experienced and showed her your tattoos. :) she seemed really professional actually!
+Feedaneeshaqua Yeah because of jobs and social life. I know some places who asks you to wait 6 months and if you still want to do it, they agree to do so. I think what triggered her the most was the "we want them right now" and the covering up which made her think you were impulsive and just wanted a tattoo for fun without thinking of consequenses (which is the case many, many times).
For the first one, why didn't you just say you were already tattooed? "Don't start with your hands" is good advice especially for a walk-in with no visible tats who looks really young.
yeah im the same.... i have over 20 tattoos and was still advised against my hand tattoos. i understand why they believe that, it affects jobs in some places and it is a lifetime commitment. i still got them. but they just talked to me first about it making sure i definitely knew what i wanted and it was a conscientious decision. the artists dont want to be blamed for you regretting it
+TheZoeBird Because she doesn't have to prove anything. If someone did that to me, i wouldn't want to give them any business either. I think she didn't want her to do it after that treatment.
imakefoodhappen That's fair, but artists see that stuff allll the time and it's their reputation on the line if someone regrets a tattoo or an angry parent comes in afterwards. It's not about "proving herself" at all, just like being IDed to buy booze or having to sign a waiver for something. It's just a simple interaction that helps the professional help you. Not to say she had to do that or anything, if she didn't like the vibe, but I don't think the artist was unreasonable (she might have been bitchy IRL though).
theblackcat diaries Yeah. A couple places I've been to have been very clear that they will not do your hands or face unless you are already heavily tattooed. Like it probably would have been better if the artist had asked "do you have tattoos already" rather than assuming she didn't... but like look at her, she looks super young and not someone who you would think has many tattoos. Probably 9 times out of 10 someone looking like that in fact has no tattoos and needs to be talked out of something they will regret.
You really need to post the name of the last tattoo artist. He doesn't need to be in business bullying customers like that. Those "artists" (I'm not calling him that) survive on word of mouth, if his name were public, I can assure you that no one else would experience that again.
I cant believe he got away with treating ppl like that. I would have demanded my deposit or threatened him with a lawyer.. I'm shocked he was as big as he was treating ppl like that. Not ok.. Its about the customer and what the customer wants. The artist is gettin paid it's not up to him...
Yeah wtf that guy has no business servicing people in the tattoo industry. I hope she puts him on blast. It's time that he stops skating by and that somebody stands up to this scummy douchebag. My forearm tattoo ended up fucking huge probably double the original size it looks fine but I wanted it half the size so I completely understand and thank god she didn't go thru w it!!!
My husband died in a car crash and I wanted his name on my collarbone, upon asking the artist she said no because she "doesn't do couple names" I explained to her and she said "still a couple"
The whole "If you feel like something's wrong, trust your instincts" thing really is true. As humans I feel like we often brush our instincts aside but sometimes you should just listen to yourself. When I got my first tattoo the place was clean, it was in a nice neighborhood, there artist was reputable, the portfolio was good and the artist had even tattooed my friend's mother. But when the day came, something just didn't feel right. My sketch was fairly uncomplicated. Mostly words. But when the artist traced it it came out really crooked. I told the him but he said it it would look good when it was finished. He got about maybe 3rd into the tattoo when he started complaining that I was bleeding too much (I had not taken any medication or alcohol). He told me that my skin was "impossible to tattoo" and that I must have some kind of terrible deadly blood disease. Naturally this freightened me, I was 16. And the tattoo I wa sleft with looked absolutely shit. It looked like something a 10 year old would doodle, and if my skin really was untattooable that meant I could never get it fixed. At least he didn't make me pay for it, though he did not apologize and insisted on blaming me and my skin/bleeding. But day or two later I got in contact with a different artist and got an appointment with her the second my tattoo had healed. The letters were unsalvagable and some stuff had to be covered up and such but she fixed me up, made it look amazing and said I did not bleed more than anyone else and that my skin was in fact ideal for tattooing. I still don't know for sure what happened with that first artist but my suspicions are that I managed to catch him at a time when he was under the influence of something and him saying I was bleeding too much and was impossible to tattoo because I has some kind of disease was probably just grasping at straws to cover his ass. So even though you do everything right, do all the research, get a place with good reviews etc you can still get unlucky. If it feels wrong it probably is.
The first refusal is a very good one. I agree fully with the artist for not doing a tattoo on the fingers on someone without experience. Very well done.
+Darby Skiles but the artist didn't know that. it is qcknd's fault that she didn't say anything (no hate just saying that she couldv'e said something and she didn't.)
+kittensx6 a swastika is actually symbolic of peace and serenity, it was taken by the nazi regime which sucks but I hate such a pretty symbol being mistaken for hatred
Actually, the buddhist sign you're talking about is the original sign, correct, but what the nazis did was reversed it and tilted it. If you look at pictures of the two side by side, the edges are faced in opposite directions.
Niamh C Actually, while you are correct that Nazis stole the symbol, they also changed the direction that the arms face so a swastika, as used by Nazis looks different from the original symbol of peace. A swastika is a symbol of hate.
My first tattoo was on my hand. Years later, I do not regret it at all. Say what you want, it should be your body, your choice. My artist did recommend me not to, but I was set on it and just went for it. It should be a recommendation not to, not a refusal.
+Mark Medina Same. I have all my fingers tattooed and the first guy was hesitant but did it.It faded a little bit and I got them touched up somewhere else and thats where I regret it kind of. He was so heavy handed it made the ink bleed out in my skin. Also, there was SO much ink trapped under my skin that I literally had to rip it out after it healed
my first one was my foot and second my hand but the hand tattoo was done in my living room by an idiot and I need to get it fixed. don't worry I'm not dumb enough to do that again.
If I had a guy tell me he would only tattoo me a certain way or a certain size and I'd already paid him, I would so throw a hissy fit until he gave me my money back or tattoed me the way I wanted it. It is MY body after all and I would have to be the one walking around with it for the rest of my life. when I got my last tattoo I basically threw a tantrum because the guy was not getting the colors right on a piece I drew myself and put a lot of thought into every detail, specially the colors. He ended up doing what I wanted. I mean, if you can do exactly what I'm paying you for, what kind of profetional are you??
I agree that you should be able to get a tattoo done how you want...but I think it's sad....REALLY SAD, that you had to "throw a hissy fit" & that you also "threw a tantrum" in order to get your tattoo done the way you wanted it....
+beautytryouts He's saying he WOULD throw a hissy fit, not that he did. And as a tattooed person I have to agree, if I had already put a huge deposit down for a tattoo and the artist wouldn't alter the design for me then I would demand my money back too. It's not that hard to resize an image and this artist was clearly just wanting more money by making the tattoos bigger. Very unprofessional!
+Robyn Walton Actually he did say he threw a tantrum, which is essentially a hissy fit. "when I got my last tattoo I basically threw a tantrum because the guy was not getting the colors right...." Not that I blame him that he was upset, but yeah :P
+Haidyn Hocklander misread the context sorry! I read it as "If" like a hypothetical situation haha! But to be completely honest I would do the same if my artist denied me what I had paid for... but hey most of my artists have been fab so let's hope I never need to throw my own tantrum 😉
If you only like one style then I guess, but it's better to go to different tattoo artists for different type of styles so they can really do a tattoo to their strengths (realism, tribal, etc)
It's standard that good artists don't tattoo hands unless you have other tattoos, I'm sure if you politely showed her your arm it would have been fine. Hand tattoos prevent certain employment, so an extreme level of certainty is necessary for you and their professional credit as well as livelihood. :)
For the first one, if I had been you, I couldn't have resisted turning around at last minute as I was going for the door and saying "Oh, by the way" and suddenly pulling back my sleeve to show my arm. Then just leaving without saying anything else.
+Lyly Bennett No, I think that's passive aggressive and bitchy cause it sounded like the tattoo artist was refusing in order to keep herself and the customer safe from future liabilities and complaints. She should have asked if they had any previous tattoos before just assuming but it doesn't sound like she had an attitude about it so it would just be childish to react like that. If I was a tattoo artist and someone did that, I would just assume I made the right choice to refuse because if they can't handle a minor business dispute like an adult, then they would also be too immature to handle making a big decision like getting tattooed in the first place.
Because she explained it all in the video. Which story are you referring to anyway? Be more specific. And look at all the replies here blaming the tattoo artist for no reason.
The first artist was doing what any respectable tattoo artist should do, many of them will not do hand or face tattoos if you have no other tattoos. It's completely understandable. You should have just let her know that you do have tattoos.
Myka Switzer she should have asked "do you have any other tattoos?" rather than assuming that they didnt and telling them to start with a different area. If she asked and they said that they didn't have any, it wouldn't have been so annoying
I have a semicolon on my hand for charity and I had to fight the guy every inch of the way. He even said if I didnt like the placement of the stencil he wouldnt tattoo me! He didn't even do a very good job I got it fixed by my colour artist when I went in for a different tattoo. It's my body and if I want it a certain way the artist shouldn't insist on having it another way.
I feel like some tattoo artists are jerks/cold to their clients cuz they watch shows like Ink Master where they literally refer to the people getting tattooed as canvases and more emphasis is put on doing a tattoo that meets certain criteria than doing a tattoo the client actually wants. People are always like "wow they're such good artists" and idolize them and want to be like them, but the artist kinda suck as business people. I hope my wording makes sense
i understand when artists refuse to tattoo hands if a person isn't tattooed in very visible places, but that girl shouldn't have just assumed you didn't have a tattoo, she should have asked first
I'm on the fence about that because I know most artists have a good reason to not tattoo hands because of "job security" and all that, but I feel they should let the customer worry about that or have them sign a waiver or something :/
I was refused a tattoo because I wanted it on my sternum. They said it would look bad if I gained weight or got pregnant. Then I was refused a tattoo near my side boob (not directly on the boob but on the ribcage) and was told no because, again, if I got pregnant and my boobs grew, it would look bad. They have a right to say no but I found it rude to reject me for those reasons.
Yeah, arm tattoos would stretch out if you got fat too...really the only places that would look at least almost exactly the same after gaining weight are your calves, lower arms, hands, and feet. So basically, you can't tattoo any part of anyone's body because it will look bad when they get fat, old, or pregnant.
xosecox12 well I haven't seen a person have like near boob tattooed or sternum ruined I have a friend who recently moved she had both none was ruined.... But I guess it depends of how the persons skin is itself but not cool to be rejected for those reason I wouldn't go to thst place anymore lol sorry my opinion.
I have a hand sized tattoo on my lower stomach. It's all I ever heard "oh wait till you get pregnant"... I have been pregnant and it didn't mess it up really.
No you weren't refused on the string on your finger. She was helping you. Some places won't allow you to get a job if you have showing tattoos, she couldn't see your tattoos so she probably thought this is a dumb design it's probably a first tattoo. If you said I have tattoos like a normal person would then you would have the tattoo now
Greywind92 Oh small one, yes, a tattoo artist can refuse to provide service at any time for any reason (other than race, gender, etc). They can refuse based on design, your mental/physical state, personal beliefs, etc. You can respect yourself and them or you can take your butt down to the Tetanus farm down the street. Either way, the artist's peace of mind is more important than a butthurt customer. Plenty of people out there to sit in that chair.
Melissa you can’t seriously be that incompetent... your feelings are not fact, just shut up and delete your comment, save yourself further embarrassment.
Greywind92 You are either stupid or misunderstood my point. Whether you like it or not, a tattoo artist can tell you to walk if they... 1: Are not comfortable with the placement/design as obvious by this video. This can be because of personal beliefs such not wanting to tattoo a swastika or gang signs or like what happened here even though I do agree it was ridiculous. 2: They can refuse service if you walk in sobbing over the guy you dumped 5 minutes ago or if you are stumbling in drunk/high. Much like a doctor, any artist worth their license will want to try and understand where you are coming from and make sure you are sane and of right mind. Again, might make someone butthurt but they will likely be thankful later. Some do not care and will put a dick on your forehead if you have the cash but a respectable artist will be more selective since it is their reputation and livelihood on the line. Not sure what part of that didn't click but sorry, that is the reality of the profession.
The last story was really, really powerful. I fully support and agree with your decision to choose nothing. I'd spend the rest of my life earning back that money rather than spend the rest of my life regretting that I got it. You're amazing!!
What is the name of the artist who tried to make your spider tattoo huge? It sounds like other people in your area have also been negatively affected by him. It sounds like he's using the deposit as leverage against the client, which is awful. It would be nice to warn the rest of us so we can avoid him. Great video!
Shit I think she should call out the person. So it won't happen to someone else. Like she said there are tattoo artist who are taking advantage of others and ppl should know.
Hey, love..... I just found you and this is the first video of yours I've seen. I wish everyone that's wanting tattoos but doesn't have the "experience," you're talking about, could watch this video. It took me about 3 tattoos before it really hit me that, "Hey, this is MY body and it's something I'll have for LIFE!" Be picky, be blunt, and DON'T accept ANYTHING less than EXACTLY what you want!! Your tattoos are beautiful!!
+BobbieWithAn ie This applies to so much more than tattoos as well. Ie. right now I'm more or less arguing with my doctor about unnecessary invasive procedures that are commonplace in pregnancy.
The first one was honestly stupid.. You got a bad taste in your mouth because she said you should get other tattoos before getting one on your hands, she couldn't see that you had other tattoos, What was your problem...?
sarasthoughts because getting couple tattoos is stupid. even if they don't correlate with eachother you're still gonna look at that tattoo and remember the guy.
it's literally the same thing as saying "you are gonna regret that tattoo" for ANY other tattoo. It's an awful and unprofessional thing to say as a tattoo artist, it's 2016. I can get a tattoo with my best friend, boyfriend and dog and not regret it.
my sister technically has a 'couples tattoo' in that she got a tattoo on the same day as her best friend but it's totally unrelated. honestly both tattoos are so pretty
+andrea rosko a lot of artists don't do visible tattoos on people without some tattoos. Maybe that poor fucker doesn't know it will be hard for him to get a job and stuff. I know a guy who went to 5 shops to get his hands tattooed, and they all refused him. He got it done to a friend of his and now he regrets it and saves money to laser them, not because they are bad tattoos, but he can't get a good job and it's stuck cleaning at a restaurant. On the other side, I have a half sleve, a chest piece and a tattoo on my back and it was never a problem for me.
Hand tattoos are known as "job killers" in the tattoo industry as it can cause great difficulty in employment. Many artists don't do hand or neck tattoos unless the customer is already heavily tattooed. They're just trying to look out for you.
+Taydra Cole I have most of my body covered exept the lower suggestable region I can have it in my line of work bc I do underwater welding for a living
Most artists refuse to do face or hand tattoos to newbies. I totally get the sentiment. However, she totally should have ASKED if you guys had other tattoos, rather than just making assumptions about you.
I would. Because that tells me that artist is responsible and doesn't tattoo anyone just to make a quick buck, she wants her clients to make good choices so her name isn't attached to what someone may consider a "mistake" later. People forget that tattooist are ARTISTS they aren't retail workers. Their name is attached to that work, which means their career is attached to it. They have a right to refuse to tattoo shitty concepts because their career is attached to that. Just because you throw money at them doesn't mean they have to do whatever you say.
Tattoo artists generally HAVE to warn you (or at least SHOULD) about hand tattoos. I do not know any (and I know a lot) that will not refuse or warn against neck, face, or hand tattoos. If you had shown the tattoo artist your other tattoos, she probably would have been more open to tattooing your hands. Try not to be so personally offended. And rest assured she would say this to a male as well. They are an artist, and it is THEIR work. Glad you seem understanding of that at first, but then after you say this, you complain about their decision....? So you don't really understand? The only thing I can recommend is developing a good relationship with one artist that trusts your judgement and aligns with your philosophy on tattoos. Or research the artist before you go see them. It's not necessarily what it takes to get tattooed, you just need to put more time into research if you are looking for a certain type of artist with not many rules.
My first tattoo was done by a guy who gave me the confidence to get what I want, where I want and if anyone refuses for no reason than to go him or somewhere else. He's truly what tattoo artists should aspire to be like. He inspires art, creativity and to wear your heart on your sleeve... maybe tattoo it there too.
From learning about tattoo culture recently this was probably an artist whose just starting. The goal is to get to the point in your career that you can be choosy with projects. So other artists shouldn't aspire to be like that, they likely were that way in the beginning and would do anything anywhere with broad limits, and their goal is to get to the point they can refuse projects.
For the first one , tattooers refuse hand neck and face tattoos to people with no tattoos because they don't want to be blamed later for that tattoo . If you showed them your arms they would've let you because you have experience in getting tattoos
I actually had sort of the same experience. I only have 2 tattoo's right now, but for my second I went to a pretty trusted artist, BUT something he really liked to do was make your idea so much larger than you initially had planned. When I went in, I was presented this beautiful piece he wanted down my side, instead of the very small rib cage design I had drawn up for him. Instead I moved in to my thigh and went ahead with the tattoo anyway, and I have to say I love it. Every once in a while I do get little bits of anxiety knowing that I have this massive piece on my thigh that I actually didn't put much thought into, but at the end of the day it's a unique design, and I am very proud to say it's on my leg.
I think it was more about where. Putting a compass full of all the lines and circles in the crook of the elbow would be so crazy difficult to get looking nice
I'm not tattooed, and I don't even really want any. But these are all very interesting stories! I don't know how I ended up here, but this video opened me up to issues and parts of life I've never even thought about before. Kinda eye opening, and you helped make my world just a little bit bigger. And now I have some advice for my youth group girls who want to get tattoos in future. Thank you for that! :) Excited to check out more Tattoo Tuesdays!
For the first story, I'd really have to agree with the tattoo artist there. Some shops refuse to tattoo the face and hands as they may be hard to cover up for job interviews, and for some, having arm tattoos beforehand may be a sign that you have experience with tattoos, such as having a job while having tattoos, or maybe a very safe job that you wouldnt lose if you had visible ink. You should've communicated the fact you were already tattooed, if you wanted the tattoo that badly that wouldve been a better idea than just walking away.
+shewhomustnotbenamed Yeah there's a total difference between making sure your client has enough info to really give consent and being off putting. I'd never want to tattoo someone's fingers without telling them it will probably be more painful than any other tattoo they've had, but don't intimidate people
I'm sorry but you take so long to tell stories, you could have made this video about 7 minutes long and with much more dynamics to it. I mean it as constructive criticism.
People are becoming so fucked up with the speed of information intake. No time to do anything. Not even to sit and watch something youre interested in, for yourself. Just bam bam bam, 60 sec documentaries, 3 min tutorials, 7 mins tops storytelling. Im kind of happy I most probably wont live up to see what will we all turn into in a 100 years.
Thanks for being the only one youtuber I could listen to and watch to no matter the time the video takes me. Btw, your tattoos are awesome, thanks for sharing them :]
The guy I go to has a $50 deposit no matter what you get(his lowest price for tattoos is $60-70). He knows a huge amount of money isn't right, especially if he presents someone with a piece they don't want, and they can't negotiate a proper fix. That way, he gets paid for the time he scheduled with the person, but doesn't have some huge sum for a tattoo that was never done.
Dexie It's not that. I mean, he is, but he also REALLY cares about the craft, and his customers. Some get a big head, or don't care. And then there are some who, thought AMAZING artists, are in it solely for the money. My artist is primarily in it for the art, and the people who pay for his work. It's kind of epic X3
+Rory Turing I have an artist who does the same! he normally charges $125 an hr and I have a thigh piece in process. But he knows with me I'm on a budget. lol so we do payments. He told me he does the same to others. He understands and he just wants people to be tatted.
HeartagramObsession LOL Oh, he does payments for people who have an expensive tattoo as well! XD He is VERY good, and works VERY fast(but not sloppy in the least), so his hourly rate is really the least of anyone's worries. He charged $50 per hour, and the rest(aka, the majority of the price) is up to how big the tattoo is, and how much detail/how much ink is going to go into it. He's insanely good at judging that stuff.
+Rory Turing Sounds like your artist and mine would get along super well. Met him after my first tattoo turned into a horrid mistake. I was very stupid when it came to who did my first. Went to a respectable shop...who told me the new kid had been there for years and showed me work that he'd painted, not tat'd. Charged me a 400 deposite, and another 100 for each hour spent. Kid destroyed my inner arm and left with no intention of returning for a touch up. Met my current artist a week later at work. 30 years in, still cracks jokes and every new piece is a blast. Doesn't even charge a deposite, just goes by the work he put into the tattoo and just chilling with him. Never a dull moment with him.
The artist who did my first tat, did not like doing couples but I was a ink virgin so he agreed. All i wanted was a little star, with a think outline. He tried to talk me in to some color but I had decided long ago I only wanted black and white tats and he understood. The shop he was at was new, it had only been open a week or so and the only chair they had was a metal folding chair. When I sat backwards so he could get to my shoulder, besides the fact the shop was freezing, the chair hurt my hips and I said this chair is not going to work, and the shop was freezing. The woman who owned the shop grouched at me but my artist, grabbed his hoodie and told me to put it on backwards and got it so it was saving me from the AC and out of his way, then he found me a different chair from the abandoned offices that were up stairs. He spent a hour tattooing my 2 inch by 2 inch star, the whole time he kept telling me how he had never had skin take the ink has nicely has mine, how still I was and to keep breathing. Even the grumpy lady who owned the shop was surprised with how my skin was "loving the ink" I left with a $30 bargain tattoo, and a boyfriend who thought I was going to dump him for a tattoo artist, and in retrospect I should have.... I still love my star and i'm looking for someone I trust to do a matching one on my other shoulder, my artist moved on and I can't find him. BJ I know your out there somewhere.
Beautifully explained, I sadly got talked into a tattoo that wasn't quite what I wanted too. And I was not brave enough, even talked myself into it actually being cool. It was, but it was not what I wanted. And today, it means nothing to me at all. I don't like it, I don't hate it, it is nothing. And I am glad you encourage people out there to just say whatever doesn't meet their expectations and if it means to bail out that's just what has to happen. Thumbs up! :)
wow, that last experience you described and the environment just sounds SUPER panic inducing, well done for standing up for yourself and getting out despite that huge loss
Some places don't do hand tattoos because they don't want you to not be able to get a job since some don't accept tattoos and the hands are seen so often.
+Pearl Joslyn What this person said. They do fade. I have 2 finger tattoos and had to get them redone twice so they would stay put. I'm lucky enough that my skin doesn't eat up the ink that quickly but I have seen loads of examples of finger tattoos fading where they look really terrible. My friend after seeing my finger tattoos turning out so lovely got finger tattoos herself and they just look so faded and bad :( They're extremely painful on the fingers too so I don't blame the artist for refusing them at all. If she really wanted them done she should have just shown her arm tattoos and insisted upon it? Tattoo artists know their shit usually. I did a lot of research on finger tattoos and understood the risk before getting them as well as making sure I took care of them the way the tattoo artist says you have to.
+Sonia Bourdon I have finger tattoos, I've had them for about 10 years. They weren't anymore painful than the rest of my tattoos and they've never needed touching up. Sometimes, finger tattoos work out.
Sha Lo K yes "sometimes" that's what I meant, we're lucky. A lot of people's finger tattoos don't actually work out. Also depends on your artist I recon.
For the story with the woman which would´t let you tattoo that ribbon. I understand her well, because when you have a coat over your tattoed parts, it´s hard to tell if you can do it. Since the hands in general are very painful to tattoo. It could been resolved fast, with you sticking your arms out of the coat. I do agree she could tackled the case better though.
to everyone saying the tattoo artist was in her right to refuse the hand tattoo: she shouldve asked her if she has ever been tattooed before! its not right to assume that someone has never had the experience just because you dont see any tattoos (jacket, jeans, whatever). she was not professional in her decision to refuse because she just automatically assumed rather than bothering to ask a simple question. it would be okay to refuse the tattoo if she was correct in her assumptions but she was not.
Stefanie She never refused though, she just said usually someone should get other tattoos before a hand tattoo, she never said she couldn’t get it. All she had to do was say yea i do have tattoos, or simply show her and it would’ve been fine
She didn't refuse to do the tattoo, she just refused to do it on her hand. Mostly because hand tattoos will fade away and not a lot of first timers know that. And she said in the video that after the women said she won't do the hand tattoo she just leave, so really the tattoo artist can't really say anything.
Haha as a tattoo collector myself, I've had one story like this. I only had a couple of spaces left to fill on my arm, and a well known artist (I won't call him out) said he doesn't tattoo upper arms. I'm not talking about some odd placement either. I'm talking about your standard, old school traditional, been tattooing there for ages, placement. I ended up getting a different design in a spot he was willing to tattoo me, since I still wanted a piece from him. I just thought it was funny because that was the first time I had heard "Oh, I don't do that". Also, your tattoos look great! I'm a first time viewer, and I was excited to see someone who has tattoos that I feel like I would choose for myself. This is a long ass comment...
I understand not doing couples EVER under any circumstances. Because that's a memory you're creating with that person that could turn sour and into regret in the end.
My daughter had to pay an artist upfront, not even just the deposit, explained very clearly what she wanted, went away allowing him to draw it up first, came back and it was not anything like she wanted, he wouldn't change it, wouldn't give her any money back, wouldn't let her keep the drawing. So she never went back to that artist/salon, told her tattooed friends about it as a warning about the guy, and found a really great artist that was willing to work with her.She has a large tattoo of an angel in a swing on the center of her back, the artist I think took a picture of it to enter it into a contest, he did a really excellent job and you could tell he was very pleased with his work and her experience too.It was worth the money to not get a bad tattoo and a good object lesson on how to find a good tattoo artist.
Who ever did that to her, she should definitely write a review on Yelp. You would be surprised on how big of a role Yelp plays, especially for small businesses.
I don't have one single tattoo but tat's are beautiful art. I like your spontaneity for getting them. I never have the nerve to commit to one, lol. I'll stick to temporary tat's and henna art.
I would have shown the first lady all of your tattoos and then just walked away and taken your business elsewhere while she felt the burn of embarrassment haha
As someone with tats as well, those 2 stories I'm with the tattoo artists. Fingers, face and neck do affect you when looking for a job. As horrible as it sounds. the artist said the "get a tattoo on your arm first." as a cover. Even though you guys were getting it separate, you were still a couple getting tattoos. My thought as I heard this was, "If you break up, you'll have the reminder of that guy with that tattoo. I'm with the first 2 artists.
+Veronica M Agreed the first two are fairly legit. It is totally cool if you want to get a couples tattoo or tattoo'd together, but I get why some artists are worried or uncomfortable doing it. There are other artists who are into it as long as they know you and know that you'll be ok with a tattoo you got with an ex etc etc. The 3rd dude though sucked, so congrats to her for walking out. Yes, sometimes tattoos need to be bigger to fit what you want into them, but this spider was obviously not the case. Some artists just have larger styles and that is cool, but if you are unable to do a smaller piece and that is what someone wants then you should tell them so upfront before taking a deposit. Finding an artist who will work with you and help make the design what you want is key.
It took me 3 times to find my perfect artist that I'll go back to for life. He's awesome and his work is beautiful. He's so chill and he resized and changed certain parts of my tattoo until I absolutely loved it. Never felt pressured or rushed with him! It's really a great feeling when you find the right one. I was never refused a tattoo, but my first tattoo had an artist that made me feel really rushed and uncomfortable, but thankfully it turned out great and I actually did love it.
You inspire me as a tattoo collector, I admire your eye for placement for your tattoos, I have a bunch on my arms, could you make a video about advice for tattoo placements?
Had a similar experience! Went somewhere to get a tattoo about the same size you wanted and the first guy I talked to said it had to be like 5x the size I wanted and about 5x the price I wanted. Went somewhere else and they did it the size I wanted (and even offered to shrink it even more) for about 1/4 the price the first guy said it would've had to be. Glad I trusted my instinct as well
The first story- I feel like that would have been funny, to say "hey, we actually both have a ton of tattoos!" I get that it was obnoxious what the girl said- I probably would have just been like "yeah we have a bunch of tattoos already, but as there is one shop per block and you refused to do what we wanted, I think we'll just go somewhere else." Idk.
In all fairness, in regards to the girl in your first story. She denied you because you don't have any uncoverable tattoos. You have one arm and one leg that are both pretty covered, but you can put a jacket on and look like you don't have any tattoos. Tattoo artists don't want you to get a tattoo and end up having issues finding employment because you're not really capable to cover your tattoo. She wasn't being rude about it. That is common practice in the industry. Be happy that she was adult enough to tell you no, where some other scumbag could've just seen you as a dollar sign and done it to someone who had visibly no uncoverable tattoos. Just a different perspective that you may not have looked at.
What the hell, if I don't like the sketch either the artist changes it or I get my money back. I don't have to get a tattoo I don't like just because I left a deposit. I already gave you my money, you have to do the work like I say, because it will be on MY skin forever.
In like 99.9% of tattoo shops, deposits are non refundable. A deposit is paid to lock in your spot for the appointment and for the artist's drawing time. Once you hand that money to them, it's no longer YOUR money.
The artist owes you an outcome. The deposit should only be kept when the client didn’t come to the appointment, because this appointment could’ve been given to another person and the artist would’ve lost money and time. But she came to the appointment and she wasn’t happy with what the artist made for her. And that was his fault because he obviously didn’t listen to her and wanted her to guilt trip into a tattoo she didn’t want. Of course she could’ve vocalised that but as she said, he told her „this or nothing“. This is super unprofessional and does not give him the right to keep the deposit because he destroyed this appointment for himself. Because he was too ignorant to listen to his client
This is why I preach consultations to as many people as I can lol. It's so important to the tattooing experience to vibe with your artist because if yall don't vibe, chances are, you're probably not going to have a good experience.
Ok third story he needs to be busted BY NAME on yelp; 27 pieces large & small, I've never encountered such experiences. Never even encountered more than a $35 fee for an extensive(full leg) original concept just for his time -the artist freely gave a copy to me to go home between then & the apt to make sure it was perfect. He also will include the work in his portfolio but considers it my "intellectual property" and would not give anyone the same piece without express permission. Sorry this was such a learning curve for you - just found your channel, Cheers to beautiful skin!
NEVER pay a large deposit for any piece unless you are comfortable enough with the artist to trust their vision. I don't care how famous they are. The people who require large deposits are usually people who've had a lot of people flake on them, and probably for good reason. If your artist isn't excited about the piece you want done, go somewhere else.
He can just take her money. He has to get paid because it's an appointment. It's like making a commitment. He basically loses money if it isn't set this way but he should of tried to make the tattoo the way she wanted it. He was an ass.
+Estefani Arteaga No, that's not how it works. The deposit shouldn't have been so much. It's like a hotel. If you don't cancel within three days, you don't have to pay for the entire trip you booked- just one day and tazes and a resort fee if they charge it. Things happen, emergencies happen, and it's part of a business. Especially in this case. Keeping $100 of the deposit? Maybe. All of it? no.
Wow that last story definitely resonates with me. As a young person just starting to get tattooed, I've felt "pressured" by artists into getting something that I hadn't envisioned. Not necessarily pressured, but didn't want to be annoying and have them redraw the design. and same goes for placement...it takes a lot too walk away, especially with a deposit down. But you need to trust your gut- if it doesn't feel right, it won't be right. Thanks for sharing, interesting and important perspective!
I have heard the word tattoo so many times in this video it no longer sounds like a real world to me... It's 2 am and I'm so confused
lol same
Audrey Eidem it's 2:55am here. I feel your pain... what is a "Tattoo"? 😂🤔😜
Audrey Eidem 1:27 and Yesss
Me, "tattoo...tattoo? that's a word? how to spell?" *runs to Google tattoo and spends an hour looking at embarrassing ones on the internet.*

This ''artist'' needs to be called out.
+Pauline D'Auteuil I don't even know if they tattoo anymore honestly. Trust your instinct and if you feel like a tattoo artist is being shady, take your business somewhere else.
+Pauline D'Auteuil for real
666 likes?!!!
With the first tattoo story, you really should have made a point of saying that you already had tattoos instead of just leaving and not bothering. She doesn't sound like she was being rude as much as she just thought she was helping you out, you could have helped her learn something new if you hadn't just laid down and left.
Yeah ikr
+Millie Skittles I was actually waiting for her to say 'so I pulled my clothes off and let her stare' :D
+Millie Skittles Yeah, I think the person thought that you don´t have any tattoos.... but another thing is that some tattoo artists dont do tattoos on your hands..meaning that somewhere where you can´t hide your tattoo... like hands or face etc.
She should have asked, not just assumed.
Passive aggressive people suck
The first tattoo artist probably has a rule about not tattooing past the cuff or above the collar, it's pretty common.
That doesn't mean it's not complete bullshit
Lindsay A That doesn't make sense, how are they supposed to get other hand tattoos first if nobody wants to give them one until they get others!?
I got refused for a foot tattoo because "they hurt, so I don't perform them" when I had previously gotten three other foot tattoos and informed him that I sat like I rock for all of them. I think the artist just had a fear of feet.
OR they had a foot fetish and didn't want to get turned on😂
Maybe he had a foot fetish and if he got near feet he wouldn't be able to resist his sexual urges
does that artist know that all tattoos hurt ,,,,,,,
All tattoos hurt😂
Well not really is will depend how resistant you are I guess. I had a hard time to not laughing the whole time for my neck tattoo so I was stuck with a big smile on my face .When he ask after how much tattoo I have and said that was my first he was very impress for some reason, maybe because I'm not a big girl...The worst I get during the tattoo happen once and felt like a nurse give me a vaccine it felt like a little pinch .So I get more tats for sure because it don't do much for me ;)
In the first story I would have shown the lady my tattoos
Kookie 🙌🏻🙌🏻
ARMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
and then walked out.
If I were only in a jacket and jeans I'd get naked but I'd have shown the lady my tattoos and then left
Army literally everywhere
As someone who is married to a tattoo shop owner, I can tell you that artists "refuse" tattoos usually as damage control, as most people will complain if they fade away (finger or lip tattoos) or if they will regret in the future (couples). When people are told nothing can be done to fix these, they leave bad reviews, don't refer people, etc. Anything to hurt the business to justify their bad decision that was warned against. Tattoo artists want to make money and refusing tattoos is taking money out of their pocket so it's not something they do for fun
agree. plus most of these people are young. so what seems cute in 2016 might not be so cute in 2021.
But refusing to tattoo two people individually, getting different tattoos because they happen to be dating is bullshit. That's not acceptable.
Milk Duds shit I had an artist try to do me like that.
Milk Duds my first tattoo the guy took a while to actually start the tattoo probably an hour and an half and he took two 10 minute cigarette breaks. so the whole thing ended up being 3 hours instead of about an hour and a half of work
Milk Duds actually he can demand it, tattoo artists are like private contractors. they set the price, not you.
Milk Duds aside from that, what jank ass tattoo shops charge by the hour?? Oh yeah, jank ass un peofessional shops, so dont go to them?? Pay by the job like normal??
Tyler Hughes The majority of artists charge by the hour. Don't be an idiot.
Last time i checked it's rude to make assumptions about people.
Morgan O'Brien-Bledsoe oh my lord it is not an assumption made based on rude judgement, its an artist looking out for someone lol
they dont want someone to not be able to get a job because they didn't research it
Woodchip You have to be 18 years old to get a tattoo. At 18 you are a grown adult and get to make decisions for yourself. I don't know about you but my decisions are mine to make not anyone else's.
Morgan O'Brien-Bledsoe lol okay keep choosing to not see the logical side to the situation and be emotional, go ahead. :)
I'm curious as well
You know it's interesting, I've had a similar experience with places all over the US.
Morgan Joyce my first was on my hand #noregrets
I have 2 finger tattoos and they are the only ones that i have, the artist told me about the pain and how i would need to get it touched up and i agreed. If you get refused a hand tattoo he's just not qualified for it or he's an ass
I want a cross on my hand and I don't have a sleeve I have a boys name on my wrist
I think the first story speaks alot to the merit of the tattoo shop. It was very responsible of them not to tattoo on the hands on impulse.
same thoughts here. it would've been easy to get the tattoo artist to do it too, just had to roll up her sleeve...
They also could have asked if she had other tattoos rather than inferring or assuming.
Nah I think it's complete bullshit
True but my first 2 and only tats are on my left hand. They had no problem with it and I don't regret it and my employers have no problems with that or my piercings
Ellie F uhhmmm no? They offer a service that people pay money for, its fucked for them to decline them just because of placement, aside feom that she asumed they have never had gotten tattooed before. Which is wrong. You sir are also wrong
I had an artist refuse me because be he essentially didn't think I couldn't handle the pain. He was a dick about it. I went home, redesigned the art, and took my businesses elsewhere.
Good for you,I bet it looks great!
Preconceived notions.
What's the tattoo of?
the Episcopal shield with the the word Steadfast curved around the bottom. It's just above my left hip bone.
Could* damn that sucks it makes me mad when people underestimate me. That motivates me to prove them wrong even more.
Story 1 - why didn't you just say "thanks for your concern, but we've both got multiple tattoos and are sure we won't regret it"
Kind of made a mountain out of a mole hill on that one.
Lilith Meowmeow How about because finger tattoos fade and maybe the artist isn't comfortable with them.
sarah bosson Ya but thats not what the lady had told them. She just wanted them to have gotten tattoos in other places first
She probably was taken aback or maybe got anxiety or something.
Most tattoo artists are extremely iffy on hand tattoos because they don't want the responsibility of ruining someone's career and finger tattoos are never guaranteed because they fade really fast
ciaruhmarie my artist did my moon 🌙 on my middle finger and it's been 2 years no fade yet ❤️❤️
Some tattoo don't fade that fast but your tattoo is going to fade soon.
she seemed really professional actually!
+Feedaneeshaqua Yeah because of jobs and social life.
I know some places who asks you to wait 6 months and if you still want to do it, they agree to do so.
I think what triggered her the most was the "we want them right now" and the covering up which made her think you were impulsive and just wanted a tattoo for fun without thinking of consequenses
(which is the case many, many times).
Angelica even though she got it lol
Angelica
yes
Still, it was unprofessional to make the assumption instead of just asking of their tattoo experience.
haha that artist was acting so childish.. like "what? you don't like the tattoo i drew for you? pfff you don't get nothing"
right?
+Kiri C. Just like the soup nazi from Seinfeld
Luckily the tattoo artist I'm going to go to really liked the tattoo I drew and was ore than willing to do it for me.
he had a big rep so he had a stick up his ass with the words full of himself on it
For the first one, why didn't you just say you were already tattooed? "Don't start with your hands" is good advice especially for a walk-in with no visible tats who looks really young.
My thought exactly!
yeah im the same.... i have over 20 tattoos and was still advised against my hand tattoos. i understand why they believe that, it affects jobs in some places and it is a lifetime commitment.
i still got them. but they just talked to me first about it making sure i definitely knew what i wanted and it was a conscientious decision.
the artists dont want to be blamed for you regretting it
+TheZoeBird Because she doesn't have to prove anything. If someone did that to me, i wouldn't want to give them any business either. I think she didn't want her to do it after that treatment.
imakefoodhappen
That's fair, but artists see that stuff allll the time and it's their reputation on the line if someone regrets a tattoo or an angry parent comes in afterwards. It's not about "proving herself" at all, just like being IDed to buy booze or having to sign a waiver for something. It's just a simple interaction that helps the professional help you. Not to say she had to do that or anything, if she didn't like the vibe, but I don't think the artist was unreasonable (she might have been bitchy IRL though).
theblackcat diaries
Yeah.
I have a follow up video in the description box
+Qcknd my first tattoo was a big hand tattoo
Bella Baby -honestly i would have threatened him with a knife. nobody talks to me that way without getting their ass kicked
My husband died in a car crash and I wanted his name on my collarbone, upon asking the artist she said no because she "doesn't do couple names" I explained to her and she said "still a couple"
I have had a tattoo refused and the tattoo artist is my husband 😂😂😕
😂😂
what did you want to get tattooed?
+Sundae Mussche me too honey. they're the pro's and therefore they know best!
+Nay Pilch um no, not always. which is the whole point of this video.
+okaylxit ™
Nah, it wasn't her fault for wearing a coat, it was her fault for not saying anything
Except that she had experience???
+Darby Skiles but the artist didn't know that. it is qcknd's fault that she didn't say anything (no hate just saying that she couldv'e said something and she didn't.)
yea same. if she had shown her tattoos to her, im 100% sure she would have been different
she shouldn't have assumed though. it's pretentious and stupid. she should have just asked if they had other tattoos.
Not well done at all being a douche about it and just assume that a person does not have "enough" ink. That's just stupid.
Omg her cat looks like menchie!!!!
Ayyy holosexual
+InsertSnazzyNameHere ayyyyye
+LittleHopelessPsychopath yess
holo fellow holosexual. I agree!
Omg yes
I think its ok to refuse tattoos like tattoos that are derogatory or has some bad negative meaning behind it like for example the nazi sign
The nazi symbol is different than a bow on the finger
Unless you go to some really sketchy places and risk getting tetanus then you're not getting a swastika any time soon
You should call out that smoking sandwich eating tattoo artist by name he's nothing more than a con artist.
+Oh!sama Yeah. Freaking rude.
same thoughts
she really should
Agreed.
8:00 anyone else
My first tattoo was on my hand. Years later, I do not regret it at all. Say what you want, it should be your body, your choice. My artist did recommend me not to, but I was set on it and just went for it. It should be a recommendation not to, not a refusal.
I was refused one on my hand . would not do it!
I mean, if you can do exactly what I'm paying you for, what kind of profetional are you??
can't*
This is why you stick with one good artist for all your tattoo needs
Maura Sieber That won't work for a collector, but yeah, hold on to a artist that fits you.
Some people travel a lot.
Well that’s boring.
Hmm, guess you're right
Why didn't you like show her that you had tattoos I'm confused
The lady was already being rude and obnoxious. I wouldn't want one after that either
I would've showed the artist my tattoos and walked out lol.
because that's not the point. I think she should have showed her it while telling her to fuck off though :D
Angsty teenage rage haha
Because she explained it all in the video. Which story are you referring to anyway? Be more specific.
And look at all the replies here blaming the tattoo artist for no reason.
The first artist was doing what any respectable tattoo artist should do, many of them will not do hand or face tattoos if you have no other tattoos. It's completely understandable. You should have just let her know that you do have tattoos.
+Myka Switzer Yeah. They acted like huffy children.
Myka Switzer the tattoo artist shouldnt have assumed she didnt have any tattoos though
Myka Switzer she should have asked "do you have any other tattoos?" rather than assuming that they didnt and telling them to start with a different area. If she asked and they said that they didn't have any, it wouldn't have been so annoying
Or again, they could have acted like adults and said they already have tattoos.
you weren't refused in the first instance. you didn't show her all of your tattoos. so that's on you. not her.
Katherine-Elizabeth Brown
You're edgy.
It was definitely the artist’s fault. She asked for a hand tattoo, not her explanation on why she shouldn’t have a hand tattoo for her first.
She shouldn't have to, it's her body!
100% you make sense. You are right too, those artists make themselves overrated.
i love that you don't cut and edit your videos that much! they're SO GOOD!!!
i understand when artists refuse to tattoo hands if a person isn't tattooed in very visible places, but that girl shouldn't have just assumed you didn't have a tattoo, she should have asked first
right
+Princess0fAwkward Also, seems kind of weird not to just show her your tats.. Obviously the tattoo wasn't wanted enough.
I'm on the fence about that because I know most artists have a good reason to not tattoo hands because of "job security" and all that, but I feel they should let the customer worry about that or have them sign a waiver or something :/
+Premium Corpse Nah.. that's not why this lady turned her down at all. But yeah, some turn down for stupid stuff.
+Premium Corpse I got turned down for that reason but got it somewhere else down the street lmao
If you said I have tattoos like a normal person would then you would have the tattoo now
That doesn't mean it's not complete bullshit
Greywind92 Oh small one, yes, a tattoo artist can refuse to provide service at any time for any reason (other than race, gender, etc). They can refuse based on design, your mental/physical state, personal beliefs, etc. You can respect yourself and them or you can take your butt down to the Tetanus farm down the street. Either way, the artist's peace of mind is more important than a butthurt customer. Plenty of people out there to sit in that chair.
Melissa LMFAOOOOO I have never cringed at anything more than I did reading your comment.
Bruh for the first story I would've whipped my jacket off and been like KAY BYE
Emily Ribeiro 😂
The last story was really, really powerful. I fully support and agree with your decision to choose nothing. I'd spend the rest of my life earning back that money rather than spend the rest of my life regretting that I got it. You're amazing!!
What is the name of the artist who tried to make your spider tattoo huge? It sounds like other people in your area have also been negatively affected by him. It sounds like he's using the deposit as leverage against the client, which is awful. It would be nice to warn the rest of us so we can avoid him. Great video!
+Lennalf I talk a little more about it in this reflection video ua-cam.com/video/SKBZLi-r6MI/v-deo.html
+Qcknd that last story was pretty messed up
Qcknd Thanks for the reply! I totally respect your reasons for not calling the person out. Thanks again for sharing your videos :)
Shit I think she should call out the person. So it won't happen to someone else. Like she said there are tattoo artist who are taking advantage of others and ppl should know.
+Lupe Ramos I agree. Have some courage & speak the truth. Don't let him bully people around...
Chise Hatori The biggest problem is never assume. Ask and make a decision. The artist didn’t ask ,so she lost a costumer.
Even if the tattoo artist didn't ask, she could have easily token off her jacket.
Why don't you tattoo couples?? It's literally tattooing two people at the same day. What.
sarasthoughts because getting couple tattoos is stupid. even if they don't correlate with eachother you're still gonna look at that tattoo and remember the guy.
it's literally the same thing as saying "you are gonna regret that tattoo" for ANY other tattoo. It's an awful and unprofessional thing to say as a tattoo artist, it's 2016. I can get a tattoo with my best friend, boyfriend and dog and not regret it.
sarasthoughts It’s really unprofessional to just tattoo just anyone
my sister technically has a 'couples tattoo' in that she got a tattoo on the same day as her best friend but it's totally unrelated. honestly both tattoos are so pretty
It’s unrelated tattoos but you’ll remember you went with them to get it so it might make you sad or something
I don't understand why you didn't just show her your arm tattoos
+Mario Gencarelli It was probably more about the principle.
I wouldn't. If you wouldn't tattoo me because you couldn't see my other tattoos, then you just don't deserve my business.
+Clementine Or, if because they were wearing coats they could have spoken up and said, "OH WE ARE!" Especially if they'd REALLY wanted them.
+moldymaude yes but would you really want someone who acted that way tattooing you? I wouldn't
but when she said you should really have somewhere else first that was her que to speak up
I love it girly u didn't let urself get bullied into a tattoo and u still kept respectful in telling ur story .... very classy
Whats wrong about someone refusing to to a tattoo on tissue she never did before?
She didn't say there was anything wrong with that? She was just stating what happened...
Where is that at?
+Ruth Villafaña NSW, Australia.
DaMn....so far away....but great you had that experience. Most people learn that threw an unwanted tattoo they settled for instead.
From learning about tattoo culture recently this was probably an artist
whose just starting.
Yeah she was just being annoying easily could've showed her arm instead of being difficult
+Heather Gillis exactly
Qcknd don't remove my comments I wasn't nasty I simply stated you were being difficult not to show your arms grow up
While that may be true, it's as simple as asking if they got tattoos before, rather than being presumptuous.
Every once in a while I do get little bits of anxiety knowing that I have this massive piece on my thigh that I actually didn't put much thought into, but at the end of the day it's a unique design, and I am very proud to say it's on my leg.
why? what is wrong with circles? the compass would have looked really cool.
Katelyn exo L
It was probably just the artist.
circles are hard to make perfect
From what I understand, it's difficult to get a decent looking circle to look right right on the human body.
IorvethTheXolo so just because it's difficult they're going to refuse the person paying for it? Stupid af they should learn how to do it then
I think it was more about where. Putting a compass full of all the lines and circles in the crook of the elbow would be so crazy difficult to get looking nice
I understand the hand lady so well! That was a smart tattooer who wasn't in it only for the money.
I'd never want to tattoo someone's fingers without telling them it will probably be more painful than any other tattoo they've had, but don't intimidate people
love that ethan is always your ttt Co host
Seriously!!
I'm sorry but you take so long to tell stories, you could have made this video about 7 minutes long and with much more dynamics to it. I mean it as constructive criticism.
good lord yes just get to the point. She talked in circles so much that I didn't even realize what her refusals were.
Exactly what I was thinking
People are becoming so fucked up with the speed of information intake. No time to do anything. Not even to sit and watch something youre interested in, for yourself. Just bam bam bam, 60 sec documentaries, 3 min tutorials, 7 mins tops storytelling.
Im kind of happy I most probably wont live up to see what will we all turn into in a 100 years.
@@Hydemica I agree. Cant even watch movies these days because every one caters to having 1-3 second scene splitting.
Thanks for being the only one youtuber I could listen to and watch to no matter the time the video takes me. Btw, your tattoos are awesome, thanks for sharing them :]
Thought that was Alexis g zall in the thumbnail
Same
+Amanda Strausbaugh she looks like if jennxpenn & alexis g zall had a child
Same!
OMG yes.
Me too
The guy I go to has a $50 deposit no matter what you get(his lowest price for tattoos is $60-70). He knows a huge amount of money isn't right, especially if he presents someone with a piece they don't want, and they can't negotiate a proper fix. That way, he gets paid for the time he scheduled with the person, but doesn't have some huge sum for a tattoo that was never done.
I'd say that is an really noce tattoo artist.
I would have thrown my jacket off and said , oh you mean kind of like right next to this one , or this one ?
+Emma Nicole My friend got refused knuckle tattoos too because hand tattoos apparently fade a lot
My friend after seeing my finger tattoos turning out so lovely got finger tattoos herself and they just look so faded and bad :(
They're extremely painful on the fingers too so I don't blame the artist for refusing them at all. If she really wanted them done she should have just shown her arm tattoos and insisted upon it? Tattoo artists know their shit usually.
I did a lot of research on finger tattoos and understood the risk before getting them as well as making sure I took care of them the way the tattoo artist says you have to.

I have finger tattoos, I've had them for about 10 years.
It depends just as much on your skin too. Tattoos wear differently for every person.
Because that's a memory you're creating with that person that could turn sour and into regret in the end.
it's their choice to do though, I would require signing and extra waiver
You would be surprised on how big of a role Yelp plays, especially for small businesses.
my take-away from this vid is that tattoo artists are a bunch of divas
I don't have one single tattoo but tat's are beautiful art. I like your spontaneity for getting them. I never have the nerve to commit to one, lol. I'll stick to temporary tat's and henna art.
By the time I got halfway through this, the word tattoo doesn't sound like a word anymore
At 35 seconds in it sounds like you said "I wanna Taco Bell" instead of talk about 😂😁😅😊
I would have shown the first lady all of your tattoos and then just walked away and taken your business elsewhere while she felt the burn of embarrassment haha
Glad I trusted my instinct as well
that artist probably wasn't experienced in smaller tattoos.
The first girl had good intentions though. You might not regret it, but others will and you can't hide hand tattoos
I really appreciate how much you respect artists and their decision to work or not
In all fairness, in regards to the girl in your first story.
But at this time of the year is totally normal to be cover up with a coat WTF...
When she turns at a certain angle she kinda looks like Andy biersack
I'm curious now
Well andy biersack is sexy as hell!
yeah that is def a compliment
Omg I was thinking that too!!
NOTIFICATION SQUAD WHERE YA AT

+Tom Armstrong
aaaaayyeeeeeee
Is this a cult
WHAT IS A NOTIFICATION SQUAD AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?!
What the hell, if I don't like the sketch either the artist changes it or I get my money back. I don't have to get a tattoo I don't like just because I left a deposit. I already gave you my money, you have to do the work like I say, because it will be on MY skin forever.
See girls like her are too nice. I would have been like it's not what I want I want my money back. I would have flipped out if I didn't get a refund.
In any art form non refundable deposits are fairly regular.
In like 99.9% of tattoo shops, deposits are non refundable. A deposit is paid to lock in your spot for the appointment and for the artist's drawing time. Once you hand that money to them, it's no longer YOUR money.
Lowlandweller _ exactly man
The artist owes you an outcome.
Love the artwork behind you and the way you express yourself! And not to mention you are gorgeous and have amazingly lovely tattoos!
With the first one I don't get why you didn't just tell the woman that you already had tattoos
+Allison Ho Agreed. She seems put off by a lot of things.
+rorolilred yeah like literally the whole issue could have been solved in less than a minute like.. ok...
Usually they won't do hand tattoos unless you have a sleeve. You shoulda just showed her your arm!
Sometimes others have to save you from yourself. Not all ideas are good ones.
I think you should name and shame this artist. I hope he hasn't bullied others into getting large pieces.
should've taken your jacket off, sometimes people need to be served imo
should've taken it off then walked out lol
That last guy literally STOLE from you. What he did can't be legal. He can't just take your money.
My ex got my initials tattooed on his hand, wonder how hes doing now lmao.
