Ed was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot, a fighter instructor, and a forward air controller in combat in Korea whose job it was to fly slowly over enemy territory and get shot at so the fighters could take out the gun emplacements. He was more of a man than just Johnny's sidekick.
Here Ed was obviously devastated over Johnny’s passing ; To have known him and to have been such good friends for so many years and do the TV show together and now journey is gone and Ed feels empty I’m sure. It sounds as though he may cry anytime. I feel terrible for him talking and trying to be brave. Death It’s so horribly sad and all we can do is just try and get through the sorrow and move forward. Bless Johnny and bless EdMcMahon .Rest In Peace , great men ♥️♥️
THIS COMMERCIAL ABOUT ALPO THAT ED STARTS AND JOHNNY FINISHES AS THE DOG THAT WAS SCARED, IS ABOUT THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE SEEN IN AGES! HAHAAHAAHAA!! THEY FINISHED IT INSTEAD OF RESHOOTING WITH A DIFFERENT DOG..THE AUDIENCE WAS LOVING IT, LOL, EVEN AT THE END, WHEN JOHNNY BARKS AT ED!
Ed and Jay were neighbors. They lived in the same Beverly Hills neighborhood. When David Letterman did his tribute show, a week later, he had Peter Lasally (co-executive producer of Carson's Tonight Show) and Doc Severinsen. Fred deCordova had died a few years before.
Dave used to make fun of Ed a lot. Dave used to fire off the overweight and drinking insults when he visited Carson's Tonight Show, which made Ed become wary of Dave.
Footage from the Leno "TONIGHT" show, the day after Carson passed way. I think I saw all of this stuff when it originally aired, and I still laughed till I cried. Carson and McMahon were almost like two great jazz musicians, setting each other up. (Leno has what Madeline Kahn doesn't like to see coming toward her, I'll give him that.)
Only letterman had potential to be as good and unique and as the best but because he was diluted in an era when there are so many while Carson stood alone, his brightness was dimmed by the attention of the masses and ratings due to people tuning in to other stations and options. Rest are all garbage.
ed and johnny were kind of like the beatles, the perfect blend which will likely never be repeated in any satisfying way. it's gone and we're all the poorer for it.
There's no similarities. One was an over rated boy band, made into stars by their label and horny girls buying records...the other was Johnny mf'n Carson with Ed McMahon.
I can't believe this is the first time I am seeing this. Shame on me. I had no idea when this aired, and when I Google it… It tells me who Ed McMahon is. I just want to know the year that the show aired. Can somebody please tell me because Google can't! … What an iconic moment. Thank you in advance for whom ever answers my question.
The uncooperative dog in the live Alpo spot was probably the best thing that could've happened for Alpo. I'll bet Alpo executives loved it. It made the spot both hilarious and therefore, memorable. If everything had gone according to plan, everyone would've forgotten about it, and that would've been that. But because something had to be done due to the dog not eating the food as it was supposed to, Johnny, in his inimitable manner, took what could've been an otherwise disastrous blooper for the sponsor and made comedic gold out of it. In other words, he and Ed made lemonade out of lemons. No wonder NBC did everything they could to hang onto Johnny.
Something people may not realize - back in the"day" Johnny and Ed would go after the show taping and have a few - on occasion someone would maybe get over served- Ed was a Marine - Ed wasn't someone to mess around with - he kept Johnny out of a few scrapes - Billy Martin could have used his diplomacy ! RIP Ed , Johnny & Billy
Please see 10:33. This is how great Carson/McMahon were.....how they could "wing it" on a moment's notice. ********************************************************************************************** ********************************************************************************************** Johnny plays reference to Ed having "acrophobia"........which is the fear of heights. Truth be known....... Ed had NO fear of heights. He went along with Johnny's cue to make conversation with the guest. Why no fear of heights from Ed McMahon you may ask? Answer: Ed was a recon pilot during the Korean War. He flew a small single engine scout plane looking for the enemy....the North Koreans and other tactical warfare plans. You can't fly a plane & have "acrophobia" at the same time. He flew about 70-80 scouting missions in this non-armed single engine plane. He probably carried a sidearm, but that was about it. Just like the news in those days. Today news shows are nothing but propaganda, turning people against each other so the rich can profit. Right - left, they are BOTH to blame.
Johnny never appeared on Leno's version of The Tonight Show. Johnny didn't even mention Leno during his final show. Johnny was David's mentor and wanted David to be his successor.
I wasn't implying any hate on Carson's part. But he did appear on Letterman's show at least twice and in cameos 3 other times. I got the following from UA-cam and it may not be a complete list: May 16, 1985 May 2, 1990 on phone November 11, 1993 on phone May 9, 1994 meet in cars May 13, 1994 In addition, Carson would send Letterman jokes for his monologue and Letterman would do his golf swing after telling one of them.
Actually, that's not true--Carson was MAJORLY pissed off with Leno, and I saw all of this going down in the press years later when "those-in-the-know" finally started revealing all this stuff to the media (I was already in my early 20s when Carson left The Tonight Show). Carson had made it clear to the execs at NBC he very much wanted Letterman to take over The Tonight Show, and Leno knew it. So Leno went behind Carson's back & pulled off some sort of wheeling-dealing subterfuge (which isn't hard to imagine given what he did to Conan) and wrested it away for himself. Carson was NOT happy, and it is no coincidence he never appeared on Leno's show. As a matter of fact, I don't believe he ever spoke with Leno again after that. And BTW, Johnny actually appeared several times on Letterman.
+sn9696 It is 2005; probably January 24, because Ed McMahon mentions yesterday when referring to Johnny Carson's death, which occurred on January 23, 2005.

Ed should be in The Television Academy Hall Of Fame. RIP Ed.
*Ed was truly THE PERFECT team mate for Carson. OVER 30 years ! and they were just plain THE BEST.*

Ed McMahon was the best ‘Straight Man’ ever....I enjoyed him for many years on the Tonight Show. 🥴
R.I.P. Ed McMahon
Somewhere I have this entire program on VHS. I remember taping it. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I would love to see the segment where Bob Newhart was the guest right after Ed left.

Ed McMahon afraid of heights and he was a Marine Pilot during WW 2 and Korea.

Interesting that Ed showed up at Leno's. I don't know if Johnny did or would have. Certainly not to the extent that he visited with Letterman.
Johnny never appeared on Leno's version of The Tonight Show. Johnny didn't even mention Leno during his final show. Johnny was David's mentor and wanted David to be his successor.

and, ANOTHER couple of hundred bucks goes into Paul Anka's bank account.
Old Guys rule
I'm a big fan of Carson. Ed was very classy and very gentleman-like. Leno is excellent but he is not Carson.
How did he end up broke?
Divorce = ruined him. The 1989 divorce from his second wife cost him a fortune. He had monthly and annual payments to his second wife Victoria.
is this dude related the wrestling guy?
Lol days y I clicked
He says “ya know” a lot!
Aw, the end made me sad. I woulda loved to see Rickles come on while Ed was still on set
