Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) died in Star Wars Episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker. As we know in Star Wars, Jedi become force ghosts, and in the sequels, they're more powerful than ever. What happened to Ben? Is he a force ghost? We never heard from him again or saw him at the end of the film after Rey defeated Palpatine. We saw and heard almost all Jedi from the past, including Luke, Leia, Anakin, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Qui-Gon and more...but what about Ben? He sacrificed himself for Rey, and gave her his life...
Here's the answer in canon from the Star Wars Episode 9 Rise of Skywalker novelization by Rae Carson.

Ben Solo needs to be alive, I feel his character really deserves extra screentime. He's like Anakin at the end of Return of the Jedi, except he will have to live on, confront his past and seek his redemption.

Instead of us hearing all the force ghost jedi, when Rey said “I am all the Jedi.” Having all the Jedi force ghosts behind rey when she was defeating Palpatine would of been intense and badass.

I mean... The only Jedi force ghosts are Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luke, and Leia. Debatably you could include Qui-Gon as well even though he wasn't a full force ghost because he didn't complete the training.
Jaded_Irregularity how do you figure Qui-Gon didnt? He was a master that literally followed the force over everything else. He taught yoda and Obi wan how to do it.
@@trevleisner9400 He was only able to communicate as a dismembered voice. He couldn't project himself as a force ghost, besides on Mortis due to it being extremely strong in the force. He was in the process of training with the Whills to become a force ghost when he was killed by Darth Maul. He discovered this, then led Yoda and Obi-Wan to complete their own training.

Really? I thought he was aweful! I cant even watch his fight with force projected Luke... He looks so goofy the way he stomps his foot as he ignites his light saber. Just his mannerisms... Im not an Adam Driver Fan, thats for sure

I actually liked most Sequel characters. Not all, but most.
I liked Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Babu Frik, Kylo Ren, Snoke, Holdo, Rose, DJ, etc.
I didn't really like Zori Bliss or Jannah. But they are okay. But we all know that the best character is Babu Frik!
Just give Anakin a super force ability as a force ghost, revive Ben, Give us a trilogy of him redeeming himself.

No one is ever truly dead with the force, as we learn in the clone wars, when you die, you leave the living force and become one with the force, that's why in rebels Ezra was able to speak to his parents and Yoda heard Qui-Gon speak to him

The Jedi who became force ghosts before probably taught Ben, and Mace and Ashoka (assuming they’re dead) at their moment of death. Just like how Vader became a force ghost. It’s cool the the Jedi have that unity and look out for each other like that :) ✊🏾

Edit: and even if we argue that Vader was taught at the moment of death.... well... it's reAlly not an argument that it was difficult.
And... It wasn't rare because every powerful force user who died on screen in the original trilogy did this.

The film did show Ben Solo disappearing into thin air just like Obi wan did in A New Hope.
True, but Leias' and Maz' role get overlooked in this equation:
Leia was covered up with a sheet, but didn't disappear until the very moment her son 'died'. If she had died a 'normal' death, she would have disappeared immediately and have become a force ghost. So, her staying physically present is connected to something greater. To me, Leia was waiting, lingering between life and death. She held on to her own life force to give it to Ben when he needs it. She did the same as Luke did in TLJ, when he fought Ben on Crait. Leia chose to die in order to give her life to Ben.
Maz was the one telling Rey that what she was longing for is ahead (Ben) and that it's not too late, and Maz was the one who stood by Leia on 'death watch'. She knew all along, why Leia did what she did and that when she disappears, it will be the sign, that Ben Solo was saved. His soul and his life. That's why Maz smiled with such content and relief. If Ben had REALLY died, this deep contentment doesn't really make sense in the context. In case of Bens' true death, I would expect Maz to show content his soul was redeemed, but sadness, that his life could not be saved. She knew, Rey and Ben belong together. So did Leia.
IMO yes, Ben did disappear but was taken somewhere else by Leia, hence, her disappearing only then. I just feel, the ending we saw was not the ending they had in mind, it was messing up the whole thing and it literally nullified Leia's sacrifice and Maz' comment to Rey. And that nullification alone is proof enough for me again, to say, they originally didn't plan on letting Ben die off. (Why they did anyways, is beyond me, because this character had way too much potential)
After all, we now know, that they had different endings and wrongly focused on a compartmentalized ending instead of what would make sense in the whole context of the movie. It was rushed, because they decided to stick with the December 2019 release despite rushed additional shootings, although they had a May 2020 release as an option, what would have given them way more time to do proper cuts. They fucked it up.
The novel, well, it's the movie we've seen in written; with a few extra scenes, but that's it.

Star Wars is big on the redemptive nature of self sacrifice. Darth Vader taking down Palpatine at the cost of his life, Luke redeeming his mistakes by saving the rebels on Crait at the cost of his life, Obi-Wan letting Vader kill him to buy time for Luke to escape. Leia let herself die because she knew her son would feel it through the Force, and the shock of it would help return him to the light.
They show self sacrifice as purifying, a Jedi is redeemed by it, becomes one with the Force and more powerful than ever before.
TLJ is the only film that subverted that, with the pilots' sacrifice to destroy the dreadnought and Finn's attempt to destroy the battering ram cannon portrayed as useless, pointless and a waste.
Ben Solo is another example of the redemptive quality of self sacrifice.
That was why Leia didn't disappear. She was dead, but refused to move on and become one with the Force until her son was redeemed and returned to the light. Which, as had been set up over numerous films, required his sacrifical death.

MP I have said the same thing from the beginning. It makes no sense for him to die. Why not show him having to live with what he has done? The struggle to regain his humanity and salvage the skywalker legacy... But again, u gotto think beyond camera shakes and Lens flares to come up with that... 🙄🤷🏻♂️😕
i didn't see kylo giving his life as "i was bad here's my goodness" but more of a "i will do the VERY thing that my grandfather couldn't and that is make the one i 'love' no longer bound by death no matter the cost" he truly becomes everything anakin couldn't be because he was blinded by fear and doubt.
Many things about his death are deeply symbolic, so I think both the book and you are right. It would be a looong chapter if they tried to write every side of it

@eXGn0cKS Gaming Hmm, I have to disagree. Vader was interesting in Episode IV-VI, but Anakin did not interest me in any way. He was an unrelatable character in the prequels. Kylo Ren on the other hand became really Interesting in Episode VIII, because of his past/flashbacks, his brutal deeds and his political ideas
@@archangelrsr1326 yeah for me i felt like they tried to make him like his grandfather, anakin didn't wanna lose padme and so he could have a life with her, his greed and inability to let go of her as more than a possession would make sure in the end he lost her entirely, even losing the ability to have good memories of her. this lead him to the dark side, kylo has a similar situation in that he loses rey and while he clearly sees his her as the one that brought him out of the dark side their relationship is way more complex than "she's mine im hers" so he gave his life to the one who gave him back his life as ben solo. a life for a life, she saw good in him and brought him back just like luke and his dad, yet again kylo mirroring anakin. kylo is anakin haha he just never saw it, blinded by a need to be dark vader.

@@cameronprice4922 yeah, Google "High Republic concept art" and you'll find an image of several Jedi all lined up together, the one furthest left has a silver lightsaber with two blades on one hilt facing the same direction.
Kylo Ren is also my favourite sequel trilogy character. I just like a character with more flaws and obstacles they have to overcome, and Kylo Ren undoubtedly has the most struggle, in the end he pulled through for the heroes. He just seems like he has the character points to be the main character of the trilogy, in line after Anakin and Luke, rather then Rey. I'm not complaining, but she barely had any struggle for someone who lived on a desert planet all her life.

his hands are bleeding against the jagged rocks, he's struggling…we're just hearing music that makes our hairs stick up with chills, we see a shot of overhead, the bloom of light casting out over the edge of the cliff from Bens point of view. Maybe even throw in a few force ghosts voices? I'd call the epic music playing over this scene '' *The Rise of Skywalker* ''

Kylo is a whiny bitch of a character, with extremely little to redeem him. The bad part is that I agree that he has more arc and struggle than anyone else in the sequel trilogy.....and the best character because of that.

I’d rather he be alive. Enough movies do the “you have to die to atone for your wrongdoings” trope that I would have rather seen something original with him having to live with the wrong he’s done and how that would impact his life going forward. Killing the character was the easy way out.
That said, there’s still plenty of people out there that believe the physical absence of a force ghost and just a voice could mean he’s not dead at all (Filoni’s comment on Ashoka, the repetition of “no ones ever really gone (which I think every time it was used was in reference to Ben), the fact that others have heard people speak to them through the Force without them necessarily being dead, and Rebels introduction of the World between Worlds fueling these theories).

Redemption through death is unfortunately the American Monomyth way. Having to atone for your mistakes is the true way of the Monomyth in storytelling.
I agree; however you also you have to look at from the perspective of the galaxies inhabitants. Most don't believe the force is real. To try and explain why Ben became Kylo would be so convoluted. If I was say a soldier in the rebellion, I would find him being allowed to simply "atone" for his choices as opposed facing justice for his role in slaughtering countless lives absolutely abhorrent. It would be an insult to all those who perished fighting the return of the empire.
It worked for Mara Jade in the EU. No one pitched a fit then. *shrug*

@@calebvincent8759 In this one case, that'll be for the better. Ben dying only happened to check a cliche box somewhere on the list of things they needed to cram into the movie.
Having him be alive and in a new location ripe for storytelling is the play they should have gone with from the word go.

Rebel Trooper I agree. Ben had so much potential and I even think they could have made a spin off of his struggles with going to “normal” life. He was such a raw character who was struggling with so much

I disagree, but it’s your opinion but I mostly love that he gave all of his life to her. It’s just so meaningful and it gave a great finale for portraying how far he had come in regards to his character arc! Rey and Ben are both great and wonderful

SWT: After Disney lied right to George’s face, after turning Han into a dead beat dad and husband, after turning Luke into grumpy drunken uncle, after stripping Anakin of the title ‘chosen one’ so they could give it to perfect flawless Rey, after just completely disrespecting everything that came before it, you need to just STOP acknowledging Disney Star Wars. Otherwise, they’ll never change and just keep giving us more and more agenda-filled garbage. Yes, the mandalorian may be decent, but a side story with a cute puppet can not carry the SW brand by itself.

They are trying to explain away terrible writing, and bad storytelling. The entire TROS movie is incredibly forced, and nothing but incredibly lucky circumstance allows anything to happen. It should have been called Star Wars Plot Armor.
I have lost a lot of respect for the channel, and SWT. I personally believe he is a much better storyteller than Jar Jar Abrams and his lackeys. Seeing him drool over every cover up line they write is really sad. Disney is 100% insulting lifelong fans of the series. That shouldn't be accepted, not by anyone. Especially not by someone that is a rather large voice in the community, even though he doesn't influence Disney.

Could this simply mean Ben will always have a dyadic connection with Rey even after his physical death? Since his sacrifice “wouldn’t atone for the darkness he’d wrought,” maybe he’s spiritually present specifically with Rey and not a force ghost proper (similar to a certain character in Death Stranding). Just a thought!

To the point where it pisses me off. It's like most video games nowadays, you can just release an unfinished product and then just make updates later. In this case, they left all these critical moments in the novel, instead of putting it IN THE DAMN MOVIE.

How? This is literally just a novelization of what happened in the movie. He obviously turned into a force ghost as his body disappeared, the book just confirms that. The point of a novelization is that it is able to explain what is going on in great detail, whereas a film has to show what is going on. Two different mediums of storytelling. You know, I have my own problems with the ST, but most of the complaints I've seen have been based in ignorance of things that were clearly explained in the films.
@@libertycentral3346 Well it is obvious about Kylo's fate, being a force ghost. But there are questions like: How did Palp survive?, How is Rey a Palpatine?. Initially, we were just given one sentence explanations in the movie, then went on with the movie. But in the novel, it has those answers. I'm seeing this from a movie-goer perspective. You shouldn't have to read the novel in order for you understand the movie. The movie has left SO many questions unanswered and that is what annoys me.
@@thedarkwizardable I wouldn't even call those "one sentence explantions" an actual explanation, it's more of a "idk how Palpatine is alive after EP6 but the movie MUST have Palpatine as the villain for some reason so let's just write down dark side magic and clones and continue with the story and we'll get back to it" and they never got back to it.

I think it was Leia. When she passed, her spirit and form did not pass inmediately. Remember the sheet still lay over her physical body. Leia was waiting for Ben to come back into the light so she could guide him

Disney could’ve avoided all this controversy, had they just written what was in the movie, but they can’t help themselves, it seems. I agree and tbh i think its just better to just ignore this Disney Trilogy entirely. I like collecting the sideshow figures of certain characters. I want to get next the Crait Luke Skywalker cause even though i hate TLJ i just love his look in that particular outfit with the brown beard, looking like hes in his fourties with the brown robe.
If i had a shit load of money, if id buy all the sideshow collectible figures with full articulation, of Rey, Kylo, Finn, Han, Leia, Luke, Snoke (if they did one) and just other figures that i could get my hands on and use stop-motion and just make my OWN little movie version, and take on this messed up, sequel trilogy and id do everything right! To stay true to George Lucas' treatments.

I imagine Ben came back in a similar way to Kanan from Rebels. They didn't fully materialise as force ghosts but still hold influence over aspects of the universe, i.e talking and acting through animals for Kanan and talking to his Dyad connection for Ben.
I had read somewhere that Disney was going to make another set of movies with Rey and Ben restoring the Jedi ways and Finn would be in the movie as well. They had planned to start working on it in 2022. But apparently once Adam Driver is done with a role he cuts ties with it. But Adam was also apparently surprised they even “killed” his character at all. Personally I don’t think he is dead. I think he is somewhere else and has transported himself there somehow. The movie didn’t show him talking through the force or being a force ghost. I do hope he is alive. I’m not sure about them trying to make more movies with them though because it could be quite repetitive. But Disney does love their money so I’m sure they will keep it going as long as they can. They probably did write his “death” in the way they did incase Adam Driver definitely did not want to come back, but if he did then they could find a way to put him back in. Lets be real though, movies suck when they change one of the main actors. So I really hope if Adam decides not to come back then they won’t want to make the movies. I do feel like his character had so much potential to grow and learn. He had been through so much and I was hoping they would keep him alive to touch on that a bit maybe in a spin off series or more movies. But maybe they could still do it with him being “dead”. He was my favorite character and I loved how raw his character was.

I thought Ben was alive because when he went to find Rey, they didn't showed he arrived in a Ship, and he didn't have the Scar on his face which that is Odd, and his "Death" was so premature in my opinion, he is very Strong on the Force, it is hard for me to believe he died, I still believe that he made a Force clone like Luke did and sent that force clone to help Rey and he left to find his journey just like Rey did, I Believe they will find themselves again one day
I WANT to agree with you, but there is a shot when he first arrives of him in front of his ship and looking over at Rey's. And Rey heals his scar when she heals his saber wound.

I think a better explanation would be that the chosen one and his descendants are all able to turn into force ghosts naturally. They are a bloodnline that was literally born from the force so it would make perfect sense for them to have that as a natural power.

I thought the last 2 episodes of the clone wars explain you don't just become a force ghost, Yoda had to learn and master the art of coming back as a force ghost and keep in mind he is obviously one of the oldest most knowledgeable Jedi at that point and he even doesn't know exactly how to do it.

I'm still sad that he is dead. Force Ghost or not. I know that he had no future after the war and such but still it's sad he didn't really get to figure out who Ben Solo was. But in star wars people have a habit of bouncing back so he may yet respawn at some point.
Kylo was a fantastic character, maybe one of the most layerd and fleshed out characters in sw. This was his trilogy.

Kylo Ren / Ben Solo was my favorite character in the Sequel Trilogy and he’s honestly the only good character so not much competition. He wasn’t perfect but he’s one of the best out of the whole franchise. I think Adam Driver did a great job with what he was given and too bad that wasn’t much.
I'm officially quitting this new trilogy as cannon- this will forever be filler to me

Becoming a force ghost on the fly literally is an impressive feat as only these two learned it that quickly.
Which means Anakin is just truly the chosen one.
Not only did Qui Gon explain there are levels to being a force ghost depending on how far your training is, Anakin was able to manifest a ghost like Obi and Yoda.
Qui Gon could only talk through the force and not manifest a ghost.

I figured him becoming a Force ghost was a given since he disappeared just like Obi-Wan, Yoda, Luke, and Leia (at the same time).

Here’s my theory: his consciousness is currently living inside Rey acting as a life support system until her body is truly recovered. When he transferred his life force to Rey, he probably also transferred his essence to keep both him and Rey alive. There is a lot about the dyad TROS didn’t cover. At some point when Rey is fully healed, they can have the Nightsisters extract Ben from Rey and the legacy of the dyad can continue. Either way, they need to do more with Ben and this would be the best way to fix JJ Abrams’ retarded mistake.
The Nightsisters were wiped out by Dooku in the Clone Wars so basically no. (I don't know of other Dathomiri male who knows about this dark magic except Maul, who is also dead)

When I watched the movie for the first time I kinda assumed Ben probably merged with Ray rather than going into the force like a normal force ghost would. As he had just literally poured his entire life essence into Ray it made sense to me that this would be the case and they would literally be one now and Ray would discover more of Ben's essence or soul or ghost or whatever inside herself as time goes on. Hence why I wasn't really surprised not to see Ben when his mother and uncle's ghosts appeared nor was I upset that Ray named herself Skywalker (sorry, but if ghost Ben is turning up for anybody anytime it'll be Ray, particularly when she's 'joining' his family. If he wasn't there then it's because he couldn't be, because he's somewhere else and neither Disney or StarWars are likely to utterly get rid of a main character like that), as I felt she was probably vaguely becoming aware of Ben's presence inside herself. This just kinda confirms that theory for me.
Then again I also 'knew' that Palpatine had literally built himself a second body out of clone parts in the Sith temple when I watched it for the first (and only =0( ) time. I swear he mentions something about having to rebuild himself or whatever (I forget what exactly as it's been a while now) and that was enough to solidify it in my mind. Was really surprised when no one else seemed to see that and figured I must have gotten it wrong, until they came out and kinda said it and I was happy.
Still it kinda plays into my theory, given that I thought that Palpatine/other Sith lords had basically anchored their spirits to the temple to be placed into new bodies/worthy new Sith hosts/whatever, it kinda made sense to me that Ben could anchor himself to Ray in the same way. Plus the whole Ray and Ben were a dyad and then Palpatine split them back into two and then they 'unified' into one person has a thematic symmetry that Star Wars stories tend to favour.
But on the other hand I also thought Ray and Ben were probably siblings when I watched 8 for the first time, so what do I know about anything?
This is making me so happy, I hope he returns :)

The trilogy would have been better if:
1. Rey turned to the darkside and became Palpatine's apprentice, betrays Palpatine killing hin to become the next sith.
2. Ben Solo becomes the protagonist and has an epic final battle with Rey to end the trilogy.
3. The scene with Leia floating through space was removed.
4. Don't give the Star Destroyers mini death star lasers(just having a massive fleet of ships is enough)
5. Palpatine's survival should have been explained like how Darth Maul survived his fall.
6. Fin should have died sacrificing himself to save the Rebellion in the second movie
Feel free to add anything you guys think could have made the trilogy better.

There are many things I would have liked to be different in the movies. They weren't terrible but they weren't great either. Personally, Rogue One has been my favorite Disney Star Wars by far.
It would be cool if it was actually Anakin Skywalker's ghost who taught Ben how to become one. Would be nice for Ben to finally get to speak to Anakin after being obsessed with Vader for so long. Would be really cool for Anakin to say something like "that name no longer has any meaning for me" when Ben addresses him as Darth Vader... One can dream.

I think it has something to do with Dyad, it’s one of the most powerful concepts, even Palpatine was trying to create that power. Ben could easily be on another pane of existence, he and Rey will probably always be together becus of that connection.
