Oh! on the 'roll bar' those aren't just phaser emitters. They are Pulsed Phaser Cannons (PPCs), which are different to the 6 standard phaser beam bank turrets on the rest of the ship.
The Soyuz-class was a survey class. The Four-Turrets (yes four) were actually advance sensor pods. A Fifth grouping was attached to the underside of the saucer section. I too when I first saw the turrets though, "Damn this thing is a Warship". but alas i was doomed to utter disappointment with the canon literature said sensors, not pulse cannons.

I agree. Fun fact the ship is mostly automated in the TNG era, it is capable if memory serves me to run with less crew than the defiant class ship. Also a fun tidbit about the movie itself, it was the first most realistic combat on screen for fighting in space.

As far as I know... the Miranda class was the first canon Starfleet ship on-screen that wasn't Constitution class. As a kid when Wrath of Khan came out, it was so dope to see something different.
He was mistaken about the U.S.S. Lantree she was a Miranda Class but whas mentioned to be a Class 6 cargo supply ship with Class 3 defensive systems as stated by Lt. Commander Data in the TNG Season 2 episode 'Unnatural Selection'.
The Miranda Class is one of my favorite starships, back then I wish there was a Star Trek show where the Miranda was the main vessel. Its to bad we won't be seeing this type of ship nowadays.
The sad thing about the Miranda class is that after the Wrath of Kahn every appearance has it being far less capable than in the movie. Both the missile pod and the pulse phaser cannons which make it a militarily useful vessel always seem to be deleted. Outside of that movie I can not recall a single retelling of this class that use either these weapon points or pulse phaser cannons at all. Also the hull plates tend to get switched out for pure explodium.
Well in ds9 you can't have it showing up the defiant. Also twok was the first and last realistic space combat seen in trek. Something else to remember, the Miranda is a great test bed and a solid space frame. They could have easily saved resources and time by testing the tech they wasted on the unreliable defiant. If space battles was like what we seen in wraith of Khan the Miranda wouldn't have looked like exploded or whatever that stupid lame loser term is. But everything has to look likeSome dumb SW space combat simulator, ugh.
At a guess, later eras of the Federation wanted Starfleet to project a friendlier image, so they intentionally pulled the Miranda's teeth by removing the weapon-filled roll bar and told it to act more as a coast guard cutter rather than the military fast-attack vessel it had been originally designed to be.
Not...really. it was just three in one, pointing forward and aft. But that is still hefty firepower. Remember, it was only slightly more powerful then the Enterprise. A Battle cruiser versus a heavy cruiser.
I think of the Miranda Class as like the C-130 Hercules… the C-130J vs the original C-130 the only thing in common is the shape… engines avionics mission equipment and such, they may as well be different planes.
I really liked the Saratoga in DS9's premiere. It was in no way grand, but it came across as a very useful starship and sold me on how it was home to Sisko, his family, and many others.
The Miranda class is one of the few Star Trek ships I like. It’s an excellent and (relatively) realistic design. I’ve built two models of this class so far - the USS Reliant (naturally) and a conversion kit that turned the Revell model into the USS Bozeman from the Next Gen episode “Cause and Effect”. Love the ship and all of its variations.

I disagree with your list. Miranda are cheap mass producible. This made them individually weaker than all other ships but mass deployable to hold the line or take territory.

The B52 Bomber was first flown in 1952, already almost 60 years, but aren't expected to be fully phased out until 2050. Of course the very earliest ones have been retired, but even the current newest ones are only about a decade newer. And this is without 24th century tech to maintain it.
Not quite at once, it still could only fire one torpedo from each tube at a time, but they could fired so raidply that it could create a spread of torpedoes. Sort like a machine gun, it's one bullet from the barrel at a time but they're coming oout so fast that it seems almost multiple bullets are omcing out at the exact same time.

I understand that as being 3-5 being launched simultaneously, and I believe that's what it says on Memory Alpha. It happens at least in one episode I can recall by name - "Booby Trap", TNG S3E6, with the Promellian battle cruiser and the minefield that traps the Ent-D
Forgot that it is also mostly automated in the TNG era. It was also used as a test bed for many technologies as well. Trekyards did a more indepth look of this ship a while back. This class would have been better test bed for tech wasted on the defiant class and it doesn't break any line of sight rules like that trash hauler sisko created.
I headcanon that the older Starfleet ships in their latter days were used in combat as basically torpedo trucks that sat back and bombarded the enemy from afar, due to their flimsiness and their weak, slow-firing phaser banks being decidedly inferior in combat compared to modern highly adaptable phaser arrays. I also headcanon for my own suspension of disbelief and freedom of fan creativity that everything we see on screen is a dramatisation and operations in the Star Trek universe are far more nuanced and "realistic." Relevant to this topic would be the idea that Starfleet's combat doctrine emphasises massive torpedo barrages from standoff range and that phasers are primarily for point defence against enemy ordnance. I am weird.
Phasers are great for point defence yes, but you'd still need them to weaken enemy shields because you only have a 'limited' supply of torpedoes, and then once they are weakend enough, idealy you would then launch torpedoes for direct damage to hull and Area-of-effect type damage. But yes I agree, Starfleet must have decided at one point that turret based phasers aren't so quick at targeting when compared to the 23rd century phaser arrays, so all ships got the phaser strips (arrays). Who knows, maybe in the 32nd century they have self replicating torpedo launchers so you can go 'ham' on an enemy shields.
Thing is the federation built them to last, all old school Trek ships like the Connie and the Miranda was built rugged. The aging space frames of Miranda was still sturdy and with upgrades she could be a match for if not better than the defiant. The decota was an aging ship but with the right upgrades she would have easily destroyed the defiant had they not hold back.
@@nocillis The phaser arrays are better because they are a chain of single emitters. Each emitter can generate and fire its own beam or pass the energy onto an adjacent emitter. When one emitter finally fires the beam, it's firing far more power beam than it could ever generate on its own. A prolonged beam could cause overheating, but the point of origin of the beam can "move" along the array, so an emitter can fire until it gets very hot then pass the beam along to the next one which then fires until it's about to overheat, and so on. Also arrays have great combat survivability, since if you hit an enemy ship's array likely you will just create two smaller arrays by cutting a longer array in half, though we've seen single hits take out whole arrays in STTNG so perhaps it can trigger some kind of cascade failure if one emitter is hit while the whole system is charged up. Before you tell me I made this up for head canon purposes, it's in the STTNG Technical Manual. I think older ships probably get upgraded phaser emitters (since they look like orange beams in the 24th Century instead of blue beams or red pulses, so they must have been upgraded at some point) but they do not get upgraded to arrays, at least not that we've ever seen on screen. That's probably because it would be some really extensive work on the hulls to add the needed hardware, and the time and cost would make it prohibitive (cheaper to build new ships that already have them perhaps). I think upgrading torpedoes is likely easier and requires a lot less work. Upgrade the loading and firing mechanisms to fire them faster or to make them compatible with newer torpedo models, and then swap out the inventory of old torpedoes with new ones. That seems like a lot less work than cutting up the hull to install a long chain phaser array (and having to move whatever was under them).

I think you need to go back to your Star Trek Next Generation Technical Manual and RE-read pages 123-126 and 1: Understand the difference between a Phaser Emitter and a Phaser Array since the large Phaser strip on the top and bottom of the Saucer section of the Enterrpise -D has 200 phaser emitters in it alone! (that blew my mind when i read that) B: Especially read the 'pre-firing' and 'Beam Emission' sequence and you'll know why a phaser array gets f^%ked---i mean, is offline if it gets 'cut-in-half'. Tre: The phasers on the Enterprise are Mk X (ten) only have an output of 5.1Megawatts compared to Pulse phasers on the Defiant which are newer AND use of 'neraly flawless' emitter crystals AND use EPS capacitance banks to 'store' / 'compress' the phaser charge and then relases it as a burst ("like an oinion"-STDS9 Technical Manual), thus ensuring little energy loss from emmission to target hit, which make it better against enemy shields. AND of course Enterprise can sustain FULL phaser power beam on an enemy shields for 45minutes from 300,000km away, BUT the battle is not going to last that long because that would blow out Paramount/CBS's SFX budget for the whole year. IV: What are you tring to say? Phaser are better than what? My house? Your fleshlight?--yeah of course but try to make a clear and concise argument other than "it's better" :/ And in conclusion I would like to say that in my reply to Fluffly Boi's comment, I too was just using headcannon about the history and referenced a probably alternative in tactics of starship combat. Actually, in Star Trek Online there are two more variants. I don't remember the name of one, but the other is the "Centaur" class. They're not actually variants of the Miranda, but they are categorized as being the same basic type. The Miranda class is actually the very first ship you're given during the Federation tutorial, & when you've cleared the tutorial & gain access to Stardock, you can actually take the Miranda & it's two cousins & mix & match their parts together to make your own version. All three are classified as Light Cruisers, with two forward & one rear weapons emplacements, & their top speed is actually Warp 5.
STO also included the Malachowski Class from Discovery, it's 25th Century Refit the Clarke, and a 25th Century refit of the Miranda called the Reliant Class, while the Mirror Universe now has the Bozeman Class, which has a Nebula/Titan style mission pod. All of them can be kitbashed together, and a common kitbash is a Starfleet Warbird, or an attempt to recreate the California Class from Lower Decks.
The underslung cylindrical modules of the cargo variant of the Miranda class most likely harken back to the cargo modules carried by the Ptolemy class cargo ship designed by Franz Joseph in THE STARFLEET TECHNICAL MANUAL from the TOS era.
Aye. Perhaps the deflector array would be buried in the bow of the ship or something. Star Trek Online has a beta variant that places a deflector on top of the torpedo pod.
05:00 I would add the TNG torpedo launchers might only have 1 tube, but upwards of 18 torpedoes can be fired at once in a spread, pretty sure if that doesn't equals "rapid reload" but I could be wrong.
Ben, The phasers on the rollbar were actually Phaser CANONS. These canons were considerable more powerful than standard phasers which is why the Enterprise got it's ass kicked when Khan first fired on them. You'll notice when Kirk fired back for the first time and hit the saucer section his phasers just scorched and did minimal damage until it hit the Impulse Crystal. Every place Khan used the Phaser Canons temporary plating had to be welded on to create structural and atmospheric integrity.
or maybe they are PULSE-PHASER emitters--more powerful than the dual phasers on the saucer section. RELIANT was a tactical ship--that's why the Regula station had a Miranda class at their disposal and protection. Enterprise was more exploratory and less tactical inclined.

I have sisko's Defiant blown up as my wallpaper. The Oberth is like the US military's scientific research ships, I guess it would be funny if it blew up and killing all those men an women because like the oberth was. Ever built for combat. As far as I am concerned, you guys mocking the oberth is mocking the same type of real world military ships and all the lives that could be lost.
I've always felt that the torpedo tubes simply could fire in both directions. The tube is the same length as Enterprise. And the launch ports seem to be a straight line. Load a torp, fire it fore or aft as needed.
The Miranda class is pretty much like the Reliant Robin. When it first came out, it was a neat little thing but as time moved on, it just became a self-propelled coffin.

A Miranda-Class (probably) was also spotted floating above the junkyard, probably as scrap, on the planet Hunhau in the 32nd century on Star Trek: Discovery. Apparently, Starfleet just felt they produced a few classes of ship in the 23rd century that were seen as easy and cheap workhorses. The Miranda-Class was so successful in this sense, that one survived (sort of) hundreds of years. :D
Just a thought on the use of Miranda-class ships during the Dominion War: could they have been ships in the mothball fleet getting evergency refits and brought back into service?
Honestly, I'd love to see a total change of pace in Trek. A film featuring a crew during war time, manning a dated A-class Miranda variant to battle against the odds. It's pure fan service in my mind but considering how much 80's nostalgia trips the media keeps going on, I'd really like to think it would be successful. Especially if it actually cared about the lore, fanbase and just went back to the roots of good old Trek. There's something about a brawler/underdog of a vessel that just screams badass, and I've always wanted to see the Miranda class return to the screen for some redemption.
The Miranda Class is basically any saucer section of a "real" Federation starship with two nacelles strapped under its sides. It's the sacrificial pawn ship of the Federation. And to call it a "medium cruiser" is to exaggerate its role. It's a frigate at best. Still better on the front lines than the Oberth... and I really love the Oberth for non-power reasons.
I've loved the Miranda class since age 13 in 1982. However, using a basically unmodified and inverted 1/1000 AMT USS Excelsior kit's stand, (and two of the stand's triangular bases cemented together), to create the 'Antares class' AWACS/SWACS variant on an otherwise-unmodified AMT 1/500 USS Reliant kit in DS9 was a pretty damn low-budget example of kit-bashing...😞
The source for the Miranda (Avenger class) is the Star fleet technical manual. It was originally designed as a tug. And the containers came out of that book too. Well not a tug, more of the supply ships of the fleet. They were labeled Starfleet transport command. The book was considered canon until gene had a falling out with Franz. Images from the technical manual can be seen on the bridge screens in the movie. I always considered this ship more in a destroyer hybrid category. The mega phasers (type 4 - star base phasers) and the torp pod pushed it into a heavy destroyer/ light cruiser class. Using current Navy shop classes. The tug/ supply ship was redesigned and modified(weaponized) for Wrath of Khan using Franz design as a base.
Actually if you look up the FASA ships that is where the Miranda actually came from. I too own that technical manual as well. The only thing the Reliant class from the FASA Trek game and movie version from the wrath of Khan share with it is the shape.
I think on that second to last Miranda Class variant, The Antares class I think, I’m pretty sure that’s the stand for the original AMT Excelsior model.
Yeah that's true but I saw a Spacedock video on the Miranda Class Starship and it said the class was beginning to be phased out in favor of newer ships like the Saber,Norway,Steamrunner and Sovereign Class Starships that were built as purpose built warships and during some of the battles of DS9 a large number of the Federation starships that were being destroyed by the Dominion sadly were Miranda Class Starships because they were in service for over a century upto that point.

It's because of the Soyuz Class starship Turret (Cause & Effect) that inspired Sisko and the engineers that developed the defiant, to go back to using 'pulse' based phasers rather than phaser arrays. However Sisko wanted more punch to the phasers (like he did to Q's face) and thus the engineers came up with the crazy idea of feeding the Pulse phasers, the energy from the warp core instead of the standard generators you'd find on a Galaxy class starship.

It should be known from this day forth of Lt Reed's brilliance and creativity that sowed the seeds of the Pulse Phaser Cannons but due to logistical record keeping methods over time, it dissapeared. Many other ideas for PPC's were similar until the 'cause and effect' event when Starfleet R&D in Tokyo examined the U.S.S. Bosemans library and found the initial designs from Lt Reed, and with what they learnt from the Boseman itself, started to work towards more flawless emitter crystals for the phasers, and with Reeds designs, helped develop the newer generation of PPC's. The U.S.S Reliant was not a Miranda Class Ship. It was an Avenger Class Ship. The Miranda's were light cruisers, whereas the Avenger's were heavy frigates. They may have similar designs, however the Reliant is an Avenger Class.
Now what it would be like is say a '90s f-15 eagle from America versus China's copy of the su-37 modern or modern mig-31 from China not the Russian kind of Chinese copy what's the f-15 still has a good chance
When I see the Miranda class re-used in TNG era scenes, I am reminded of how cheap producers are, and how much they rely on their audience to forgive their audacious decisions. I am bugged that the Miranda class had such an incredibly long "career", while the Constitution Refit (which could have ended up with a different class name, if allowed to continue) did not last. It bugs me that Constitution retirement was an obvious "retire the jersey" move, so that fans are not angered by the reuse of their OG starship design. We have seen so many new designs not just on screen but on paper. I am double-bugged by the longevity of the Miranda over just about any other design, while the Constitution ended up with a ridiculously short career. I can understand how the excelsior class could have lasted, being a big, experimental, new design in ST3. But lasting into the TNG era is pushing it. Especially considering the experimental nature of the original Excelsior, and how it should have changed, and not just with "shoulders" as seen in ST7. The change could have been as simple as turning the angular nacelle struts curvy, a la the TNG enterprise struts. It all strikes me as unfortunately cheap and pandering in a beloved franchise, where fans would love to design and build new designs. As space scenes moved from physical models to CGI, the use of fan designs could have been even easier. Fans would have been happy... wait, scratch that. They would have been ecstatically thrilled to sign a release form for their creations, to see them in an official production.
In “The Best of Both Worlds” during the graveyard scene in the aftermath of the Battle of Wolf359 there is a destroyed secondary hull of a Constitution-class ship. So, obviously some Conneys did partake in the battle, just off-screen. And that’s not getting into the debate on whether the Melbourne was a Nebula-class or Excelsior-class starship, cause that just boils down to filmmakers of DS9 screwing up royally.
Not necessarily expendable. It's more about a numbers game; having more assets in the battle space than your opponent. If you lost a Constitution-class ship then you just lost about 200+ trained crew members as opposed to 20+ service members. So with 200 sailors, you can have approximately 10 Miranda's.
In my opinion it is more like taking a Grate War protected cruiser retro fit against a Second world war Destroyer. It may give a fight but not win. A quick question. Why do you not say English Ben?

The Deep Space Nine technical manual botched all Starship dimensions. It is a singular work of non-canonical fiction that should not be referenced, yet it is continuously. Good video. I agree, Tempest-Class is a way better name.
Everything about ds9 was crap not just the manual. Well save for ROM, Nog, Quirk, an Morn. I also disagree about the name. Miranda is a far better name than the awful tempest class. I got it from this point on the oberth is now the tempest class.
Just keep in mind that the Excelsior was the great experiment and debuted at a time when Reliant and others of that class had been in operation for, probably ten years or so. I say that because Miranda Class was probably developed around the time of The Motion Picture, if not before. The Excelsior was a huge leap forward in technology, as well as being enormous when compared to other starships. So really, it is not fair to use Excelsior as a comparison to the Reliant in this video. The only comparison that should be used is the Constitution Class. Where did the name "Miranda Class" even come from? It was years after Star Trek II before I had ever heard it. Also, why on Earth was Reliant so heavily armed? It had way more weapon emitters than Enterprise.
Nobody ever mentions the fact that it has no apparent deflector dish. How am I the only person that ever notices this? If it does have a deflector dish or dishes where are they exactly? There are two protruding bits on the boxy section but they don't look very deflector like.
8:10 People like making this sort of time comparison but it doesn't really apply that way. A plane from 1903 and a modern fighter jet share little in common aside from being aircraft. The Miranda uses the same sort of engines, weapons, and defenses as the more modern ships use.
My favorite is always been the Constitution class and it could really be souped up where it could be even a match for the intrepid class with the proper armament and updated systems. The Miranda class makes no sense because it has no deflector dish.
Always great videos and research done on this and the other Generation channel, but both channels often cut of the hosts goodbyes. It's a small nitpick of mine, but it's also such a easy fix that I'll bring it up. I don't think you'll crash your channels with adding that last second to the videos. The Miranda Class “Torpedo Roll-Bar” is a freaking HUGE target on the ship, just because of the totally unprotected said torpedo launch system, as well as the warp nacelles that stretched out all along the length of the ship. It’s like the stupid design team came up with this hilarious variant that just screams: “Hit me!! I’m an easy target!! Hey, Klingons & Romulans!! Look!! We’re driving a Pinto!! Hit us!! Please!! Put us out of our misery!! We never should’ve signed on to be on this DEATH-TRAP!!” I could’ve designed a much better ship than the designers could. No wonder they weren’t paid enough…

As far as I know... the Miranda class was the first canon Starfleet ship on-screen that wasn't Constitution class. As a kid when Wrath of Khan came out, it was so dope to see something different.

He was mistaken about the U.S.S. Lantree she was a Miranda Class but whas mentioned to be a Class 6 cargo supply ship with Class 3 defensive systems as stated by Lt. Commander Data in the TNG Season 2 episode 'Unnatural Selection'.
The Miranda Class is one of my favorite starships, back then I wish there was a Star Trek show where the Miranda was the main vessel. Its to bad we won't be seeing this type of ship nowadays.

The sad thing about the Miranda class is that after the Wrath of Kahn every appearance has it being far less capable than in the movie. Both the missile pod and the pulse phaser cannons which make it a militarily useful vessel always seem to be deleted. Outside of that movie I can not recall a single retelling of this class that use either these weapon points or pulse phaser cannons at all. Also the hull plates tend to get switched out for pure explodium.
Well in ds9 you can't have it showing up the defiant.
Also twok was the first and last realistic space combat seen in trek.
Something else to remember, the Miranda is a great test bed and a solid space frame.
They could have easily saved resources and time by testing the tech they wasted on the unreliable defiant.
If space battles was like what we seen in wraith of Khan the Miranda wouldn't have looked like exploded or whatever that stupid lame loser term is.
But everything has to look likeSome dumb SW space combat simulator, ugh.
At a guess, later eras of the Federation wanted Starfleet to project a friendlier image, so they intentionally pulled the Miranda's teeth by removing the weapon-filled roll bar and told it to act more as a coast guard cutter rather than the military fast-attack vessel it had been originally designed to be.

Those phasers on the "rollbar" are not just phasers but mega-phasers. The Star Trek version of the USAF A-10 30mm cannon.
Not...really. it was just three in one, pointing forward and aft. But that is still hefty firepower. Remember, it was only slightly more powerful then the Enterprise. A Battle cruiser versus a heavy cruiser.

Pulse-phaser cannons. Reliant is more of a tactical ship. Constitution class is more exploratory ship design.
I think of the Miranda Class as like the C-130 Hercules… the C-130J vs the original C-130 the only thing in common is the shape… engines avionics mission equipment and such, they may as well be different planes.
I really liked the Saratoga in DS9's premiere. It was in no way grand, but it came across as a very useful starship and sold me on how it was home to Sisko, his family, and many others.
The Miranda class is one of the few Star Trek ships I like. It’s an excellent and (relatively) realistic design.
I’ve built two models of this class so far - the USS Reliant (naturally) and a conversion kit that turned the Revell model into the USS Bozeman from the Next Gen episode “Cause and Effect”.
Love the ship and all of its variations.

The B52 Bomber was first flown in 1952, already almost 60 years, but aren't expected to be fully phased out until 2050. Of course the very earliest ones have been retired, but even the current newest ones are only about a decade newer. And this is without 24th century tech to maintain it.

Regarding the older vs newer torpedo tubes - don't forget that the Enterprise D could fire spreads of multiple torpedos at once from each single tube!
Not quite at once, it still could only fire one torpedo from each tube at a time, but they could fired so raidply that it could create a spread of torpedoes. Sort like a machine gun, it's one bullet from the barrel at a time but they're coming oout so fast that it seems almost multiple bullets are omcing out at the exact same time.

IMO, the galaxy class was indirectly based on constitution class and nebula class on Miranda class. Look at the similarities.

This class would have been better test bed for tech wasted on the defiant class and it doesn't break any line of sight rules like that trash hauler sisko created.
I headcanon that the older Starfleet ships in their latter days were used in combat as basically torpedo trucks that sat back and bombarded the enemy from afar, due to their flimsiness and their weak, slow-firing phaser banks being decidedly inferior in combat compared to modern highly adaptable phaser arrays.
I also headcanon for my own suspension of disbelief and freedom of fan creativity that everything we see on screen is a dramatisation and operations in the Star Trek universe are far more nuanced and "realistic." Relevant to this topic would be the idea that Starfleet's combat doctrine emphasises massive torpedo barrages from standoff range and that phasers are primarily for point defence against enemy ordnance.
I am weird.
Phasers are great for point defence yes, but you'd still need them to weaken enemy shields because you only have a 'limited' supply of torpedoes, and then once they are weakend enough, idealy you would then launch torpedoes for direct damage to hull and Area-of-effect type damage. But yes I agree, Starfleet must have decided at one point that turret based phasers aren't so quick at targeting when compared to the 23rd century phaser arrays, so all ships got the phaser strips (arrays).
Who knows, maybe in the 32nd century they have self replicating torpedo launchers so you can go 'ham' on an enemy shields.

Thing is the federation built them to last, all old school Trek ships like the Connie and the Miranda was built rugged.
The aging space frames of Miranda was still sturdy and with upgrades she could be a match for if not better than the defiant.
The decota was an aging ship but with the right upgrades she would have easily destroyed the defiant had they not hold back.
@@nocillis The phaser arrays are better because they are a chain of single emitters. Each emitter can generate and fire its own beam or pass the energy onto an adjacent emitter. When one emitter finally fires the beam, it's firing far more power beam than it could ever generate on its own. A prolonged beam could cause overheating, but the point of origin of the beam can "move" along the array, so an emitter can fire until it gets very hot then pass the beam along to the next one which then fires until it's about to overheat, and so on. Also arrays have great combat survivability, since if you hit an enemy ship's array likely you will just create two smaller arrays by cutting a longer array in half, though we've seen single hits take out whole arrays in STTNG so perhaps it can trigger some kind of cascade failure if one emitter is hit while the whole system is charged up. Before you tell me I made this up for head canon purposes, it's in the STTNG Technical Manual.
I think older ships probably get upgraded phaser emitters (since they look like orange beams in the 24th Century instead of blue beams or red pulses, so they must have been upgraded at some point) but they do not get upgraded to arrays, at least not that we've ever seen on screen. That's probably because it would be some really extensive work on the hulls to add the needed hardware, and the time and cost would make it prohibitive (cheaper to build new ships that already have them perhaps). I think upgrading torpedoes is likely easier and requires a lot less work. Upgrade the loading and firing mechanisms to fire them faster or to make them compatible with newer torpedo models, and then swap out the inventory of old torpedoes with new ones. That seems like a lot less work than cutting up the hull to install a long chain phaser array (and having to move whatever was under them).

I think you need to go back to your Star Trek Next Generation Technical Manual and RE-read pages 123-126 and
1: Understand the difference between a Phaser Emitter and a Phaser Array since the large Phaser strip on the top and bottom of the Saucer section of the Enterrpise -D has 200 phaser emitters in it alone! (that blew my mind when i read that)
B: Especially read the 'pre-firing' and 'Beam Emission' sequence and you'll know why a phaser array gets f^%ked---i mean, is offline if it gets 'cut-in-half'.
Tre: The phasers on the Enterprise are Mk X (ten) only have an output of 5.1Megawatts compared to Pulse phasers on the Defiant which are newer AND use of 'neraly flawless' emitter crystals AND use EPS capacitance banks to 'store' / 'compress' the phaser charge and then relases it as a burst ("like an oinion"-STDS9 Technical Manual), thus ensuring little energy loss from emmission to target hit, which make it better against enemy shields. AND of course Enterprise can sustain FULL phaser power beam on an enemy shields for 45minutes from 300,000km away, BUT the battle is not going to last that long because that would blow out Paramount/CBS's SFX budget for the whole year.
IV: What are you tring to say? Phaser are better than what? My house? Your fleshlight?--yeah of course but try to make a clear and concise argument other than "it's better" :/

Actually, in Star Trek Online there are two more variants. I don't remember the name of one, but the other is the "Centaur" class. They're not actually variants of the Miranda, but they are categorized as being the same basic type. The Miranda class is actually the very first ship you're given during the Federation tutorial, & when you've cleared the tutorial & gain access to Stardock, you can actually take the Miranda & it's two cousins & mix & match their parts together to make your own version.
All three are classified as Light Cruisers, with two forward & one rear weapons emplacements, & their top speed is actually Warp 5.
STO also included the Malachowski Class from Discovery, it's 25th Century Refit the Clarke, and a 25th Century refit of the Miranda called the Reliant Class, while the Mirror Universe now has the Bozeman Class, which has a Nebula/Titan style mission pod. All of them can be kitbashed together, and a common kitbash is a Starfleet Warbird, or an attempt to recreate the California Class from Lower Decks.

05:00 I would add the TNG torpedo launchers might only have 1 tube, but upwards of 18 torpedoes can be fired at once in a spread, pretty sure if that doesn't equals "rapid reload" but I could be wrong.

The phasers on the rollbar were actually Phaser CANONS. These canons were considerable more powerful than standard phasers which is why the Enterprise got it's ass kicked when Khan first fired on them. You'll notice when Kirk fired back for the first time and hit the saucer section his phasers just scorched and did minimal damage until it hit the Impulse Crystal. Every place Khan used the Phaser Canons temporary plating had to be welded on to create structural and atmospheric integrity.

RELIANT was a tactical ship--that's why the Regula station had a Miranda class at their disposal and protection. Enterprise was more exploratory and less tactical inclined.

8:12 Ironically enough the Wright Brothers airplane probably has better stealth characteristics than the F-22. Modern radar would go right through the wood and fabric. The engine is the only things that may be detected.

I've always felt that the torpedo tubes simply could fire in both directions. The tube is the same length as Enterprise. And the launch ports seem to be a straight line. Load a torp, fire it fore or aft as needed.
They don't go strait threw. The forward tubes are closer together tban the rear tubes.
The Miranda class is pretty much like the Reliant Robin. When it first came out, it was a neat little thing but as time moved on, it just became a self-propelled coffin.

A Miranda-Class (probably) was also spotted floating above the junkyard, probably as scrap, on the planet Hunhau in the 32nd century on Star Trek: Discovery. Apparently, Starfleet just felt they produced a few classes of ship in the 23rd century that were seen as easy and cheap workhorses. The Miranda-Class was so successful in this sense, that one survived (sort of) hundreds of years. :D

Honestly, I'd love to see a total change of pace in Trek. A film featuring a crew during war time, manning a dated A-class Miranda variant to battle against the odds. It's pure fan service in my mind but considering how much 80's nostalgia trips the media keeps going on, I'd really like to think it would be successful. Especially if it actually cared about the lore, fanbase and just went back to the roots of good old Trek. There's something about a brawler/underdog of a vessel that just screams badass, and I've always wanted to see the Miranda class return to the screen for some redemption.
Crew complement is listed as 26-35 (24th Century), not 220 (according to Memory Alpha).
The Miranda Class is basically any saucer section of a "real" Federation starship with two nacelles strapped under its sides. It's the sacrificial pawn ship of the Federation. And to call it a "medium cruiser" is to exaggerate its role. It's a frigate at best. Still better on the front lines than the Oberth... and I really love the Oberth for non-power reasons.
I've loved the Miranda class since age 13 in 1982. However, using a basically unmodified and inverted 1/1000 AMT USS Excelsior kit's stand, (and two of the stand's triangular bases cemented together), to create the 'Antares class' AWACS/SWACS variant on an otherwise-unmodified AMT 1/500 USS Reliant kit in DS9 was a pretty damn low-budget example of kit-bashing...😞
The source for the Miranda (Avenger class) is the Star fleet technical manual.
It was originally designed as a tug. And the containers came out of that book too. Well not a tug, more of the supply ships of the fleet.
They were labeled Starfleet transport command.
The book was considered canon until gene had a falling out with Franz. Images from the technical manual can be seen on the bridge screens in the movie.
I always considered this ship more in a destroyer hybrid category. The mega phasers (type 4 - star base phasers) and the torp pod pushed it into a heavy destroyer/ light cruiser class. Using current Navy shop classes.
The tug/ supply ship was redesigned and modified(weaponized) for Wrath of Khan using Franz design as a base.

Yeah that's true but I saw a Spacedock video on the Miranda Class Starship and it said the class was beginning to be phased out in favor of newer ships like the Saber,Norway,Steamrunner and Sovereign Class Starships that were built as purpose built warships and during some of the battles of DS9 a large number of the Federation starships that were being destroyed by the Dominion sadly were Miranda Class Starships because they were in service for over a century upto that point.

It's because of the Soyuz Class starship Turret (Cause & Effect) that inspired Sisko and the engineers that developed the defiant, to go back to using 'pulse' based phasers rather than phaser arrays. However Sisko wanted more punch to the phasers (like he did to Q's face) and thus the engineers came up with the crazy idea of feeding the Pulse phasers, the energy from the warp core instead of the standard generators you'd find on a Galaxy class starship.

Here here. Let's add that to the official records. It should be known from this day forth of Lt Reed's brilliance and creativity that sowed the seeds of the Pulse Phaser Cannons but due to logistical record keeping methods over time, it dissapeared. Many other ideas for PPC's were similar until the 'cause and effect' event when Starfleet R&D in Tokyo examined the U.S.S. Bosemans library and found the initial designs from Lt Reed, and with what they learnt from the Boseman itself, started to work towards more flawless emitter crystals for the phasers, and with Reeds designs, helped develop the newer generation of PPC's.

Agreed. The Nebula-class is the best looking Federation ship out there; followed by the NX-class then Defiant-class.
The U.S.S Reliant was not a Miranda Class Ship. It was an Avenger Class Ship. The Miranda's were light cruisers, whereas the Avenger's were heavy frigates. They may have similar designs, however the Reliant is an Avenger Class.

The Miranda was weakened to make the defiant look good, no other reason than that.
When I see the Miranda class re-used in TNG era scenes, I am reminded of how cheap producers are, and how much they rely on their audience to forgive their audacious decisions.
I am bugged that the Miranda class had such an incredibly long "career", while the Constitution Refit (which could have ended up with a different class name, if allowed to continue) did not last.
It bugs me that Constitution retirement was an obvious "retire the jersey" move, so that fans are not angered by the reuse of their OG starship design.
We have seen so many new designs not just on screen but on paper. I am double-bugged by the longevity of the Miranda over just about any other design, while the Constitution ended up with a ridiculously short career.
I can understand how the excelsior class could have lasted, being a big, experimental, new design in ST3. But lasting into the TNG era is pushing it. Especially considering the experimental nature of the original Excelsior, and how it should have changed, and not just with "shoulders" as seen in ST7. The change could have been as simple as turning the angular nacelle struts curvy, a la the TNG enterprise struts.
It all strikes me as unfortunately cheap and pandering in a beloved franchise, where fans would love to design and build new designs.
As space scenes moved from physical models to CGI, the use of fan designs could have been even easier.
Fans would have been happy... wait, scratch that. They would have been ecstatically thrilled to sign a release form for their creations, to see them in an official production.
In “The Best of Both Worlds” during the graveyard scene in the aftermath of the Battle of Wolf359 there is a destroyed secondary hull of a Constitution-class ship. Could you compare real navy ship vs trek ships for size and design. Would a zumwalt destroyer compare to a intrepid class ship?

In other words Starfleet Headquarters was turning the Miranda class Starships into cannon fodder in other words ships that were expendable.
Not necessarily expendable. It's more about a numbers game; having more assets in the battle space than your opponent. If you lost a Constitution-class ship then you just lost about 200+ trained crew members as opposed to 20+ service members. So with 200 sailors, you can have approximately 10 Miranda's.
In my opinion it is more like taking a Grate War protected cruiser retro fit against a Second world war Destroyer. It may give a fight but not win.

The Miranda Class is a much more sensible design.
Just keep in mind that the Excelsior was the great experiment and debuted at a time when Reliant and others of that class had been in operation for, probably ten years or so. I say that because Miranda Class was probably developed around the time of The Motion Picture, if not before. The Excelsior was a huge leap forward in technology, as well as being enormous when compared to other starships. So really, it is not fair to use Excelsior as a comparison to the Reliant in this video. The only comparison that should be used is the Constitution Class.
Where did the name "Miranda Class" even come from? It was years after Star Trek II before I had ever heard it. Also, why on Earth was Reliant so heavily armed? It had way more weapon emitters than Enterprise.
Nobody ever mentions the fact that it has no apparent deflector dish. How am I the only person that ever notices this? If it does have a deflector dish or dishes where are they exactly? There are two protruding bits on the boxy section but they don't look very deflector like.

8:10 People like making this sort of time comparison but it doesn't really apply that way. A plane from 1903 and a modern fighter jet share little in common aside from being aircraft. The Miranda uses the same sort of engines, weapons, and defenses as the more modern ships use.
the Miranda was refitted and used a lot less crew in the 24th then in the 23rd
My favorite is always been the Constitution class and it could really be souped up where it could be even a match for the intrepid class with the proper armament and updated systems. The Miranda class makes no sense because it has no deflector dish.
Always great videos and research done on this and the other Generation channel, but both channels often cut of the hosts goodbyes.
It's a small nitpick of mine, but it's also such a easy fix that I'll bring it up.
I don't think you'll crash your channels with adding that last second to the videos.

The Miranda Class “Torpedo Roll-Bar” is a freaking HUGE target on the ship, just because of the totally unprotected said torpedo launch system, as well as the warp nacelles that stretched out all along the length of the ship. It’s like the stupid design team came up with this hilarious variant that just screams: “Hit me!! I’m an easy target!! Hey, Klingons & Romulans!! Look!! We’re driving a Pinto!! Hit us!! Please!! Put us out of our misery!! We never should’ve signed on to be on this DEATH-TRAP!!” I could’ve designed a much better ship than the designers could. No wonder they weren’t paid enough…
