I feel like Countdown is an S-Tier. I think in terms if variety of songs, it does it best. War, Famine, Schizophrenia, superheros, suicide, skydiving, and climate change were all topics done on that album. I don't mind the slower pace because it's clever and Dave writes some really clever lyrics in there alongside Youthanasia. Those two albums with Marty and Nick were when the band meshed well together. Peace Sells I would put below those two because some of it could be seen as cheesy. Like the Conjuring, Good Mourning/Black Friday, and I Ain't Superstitious were all kind of weird. Countdown and Youthanasia's subject matters have aged very well. It loses some speed, but Dave is a better singer on this one. His voice matches the frantic nature of Skin O' My Teeth, High Speed Dirt, Crown of Worms, Sweating Bullets, and This Was My Life so well. The melodic guitar solos on Countdown to Extinction and Ashes In Your Mouth were particulary nice to listen to.

If you ask me personally - United Abominations is highly underrated. The composition is very good. It's got a great mix of melody and riffing which I love. It's just a shame that Megadeth's later good albums always get compared to the early legacy of the analog recordings and I just don't think that's fair. Some people will never get over the lost of Ellefson or Friedman or Nick Menza. Because people lack of adaption to modern production and the fact that Dave and the members are getting older, they don't have the energy to play 190 BPM like they use to at extreme speeds. And Kiko is a great guitarist and composer. I love the Angra stuff more than Megadeth because I love that power metal sound and style. So I like the later Megadeth stuff. Minus Supercollider and 2/3s of Thirteen. Otherwise it's all great stuff. That's the more modern Megadeth style I love. It's just a shame majority of the fans aren't open minded like that.

Yes it’s different to their other material but I don’t think it’s necessarily about “sticking to your guns” for an album to be great. I also think that if you liked that album, you’d also like some of youthanasia because that album is like an unspoken carrying on of ext. and is very unique as well. Youthanasia is a really good album. the opening track reckoning day is killer, a toute le monde is one of their best songs ever. (the entire crowd at their concerts sing along to it everytime) Family tree is a banger. I could on. Not a traditional thrash album, but its uniquely Megadeth.(if that makes sense) I agree with the list mostly except for that album. Should be A list

B: The System Has Failed, Endgame, Youthanasia, United Abominations, Cryptic Writings
C: Th1rt3en, Dystopia, The Sick the Dying
D: Risk, The World Needs a Hero, Super Collider
Their new album didn't click the first listen, but it's growing on me. There were lots of moments and lyrics that made me audibly groan, like Junkie's vocal intro; Dogs of Chernoble's "I'm taken to safety...my skin's looking pasty;" Mission to Mars' "I wanna be an astronaut...I wanna, I wanna" and "Hello ladies;" the "Bring out your dead" part that starts off the album; and the army chants at the end of Soldier On.
I feel like I've heard the riffs so many times before. A lot of the sound effects and audio clips don't add much and are out of place, the lyrics made me groan and are quite predictable. The chimes in Sacrifice don't add anything and I didn't care for how Dave held that note for like 15 seconds. The mix during the first ten seconds of Soldier On sounds weak, maybe it's the absence of bass. It was a 6/10 first listen, but now it might be a 7/10.

S tier - Peace Sells and Rust
A tier - KIMB, SFSGSW, Dystopia
B tier - Countdown, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, System
    And then everything else.
Personally I love the sound of Peace Sells. One of the best productions I think and it's got a great balance of technicality and that raw aggression. It's a consistent album with all the songs being similar in dark topics. It's full of catchy jazzy riffs that are all very memorable. It's my favorite album of all time depending on the day. I think it's a perfect album and yes I even listen to "I ain't Superstitious" just as much as the others. And of course that Ed Repka artwork is just the cherry on top. I love Rust too of course, but the deep cuts aren't as memorable and I don't like the production as much as the heavy low end of Peace Sells.

A year late, but I want to give a few thoughts:
    - I understand why you're not that big a fan of Youthanasia. They doubled down on the sonic & writing shift starting with C2E; Not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but the writing is so much stronger than on Cryptic or Risk.
    - Faster does not mean better. I get the ferocity of KIMB, but there's no universe where its writing surpasses KEA. Dave wrote a lot of those riffs anyway, so it's not even a Megadeth/Metallica discussion, it's just a "look how angrier I am" record with worse lyrics & vocals that can't stand up to James (although Dave sounded good here).

I honestly question if you have even listened to these albums all the way through. Please give them another listen. Youthanasia is amazing. If you like Cryptic Writings, you will love Youthanasia. It is their most melodic album. 13 is an excellent album and a bit underrated, same with United Abominations. Risk is the weakest album by a wide margin. Super Collider is not good, but "Forget to Remember" is an amazing track.
    My ratings:
Killing Is My Business - B (solid debut, but I don't find myself listening to it much)
Peace Sells - B (Weak overall, but amazing title track)
So Far, So Good - B (Weak overall, but In My Darkest Hour is one of the best metal tracks ever)

    Countdown - A
    Youthanasia - A

    Risk - F
    The World Needs a Hero - C
The System Has Failed - B

    Endgame - A
    Thirteen - B
    Super Collider - D
    Dystopia - A

Funny that you mention a lot of the songs I find interesting, although sometimes for a different reason.
IMO, off the first album, KIMBABIG, Loved to Deth is tolerable and Looking Down the Cross is an S tier raw masterpiece, but the rest is F tier trash. Would agree with the album's overall rank.
I would put Peace Sells at S tier, although slightly below Rust. I think aside from Wake up Dead, which I consider a party song, and Bad Omen, everything is enjoyable. Conjuring would be my pick for best song on the album, along with Peace Sells, the title track, even though they are very different. This is the raw, punky album with lots of energy that shows a lot of talent.
Rust in Peace - no arguments there. Interesting that you also mention Poison Was the Cure. It is one of my absolute favorites, but not many people like it a lot. The solo is really beautiful when you break it down, and the part with lyrics is a very powerful expression of dangerous depression musically in my opinion, even though it's about drug addiction. Solo in Tornado of Souls: perfection.
This album is the accidental masterpiece in my opinion. It doesn't represent the most mature state of the songwriter. Instead, it is the height of his pure talent that he will never able to grasp again when he reaches his most mature state.
SFSGSW: In My Darkest Hour is not the best-written song ever, but it has such interesting parts that I really enjoy it and consider it one of their best songs. Mary Jane (I believe it was on that album too) is interesting. I don't care about the rest at all.
Countdown has, in my opinion, the artistic touch of a very mature musician and songwriter, which elevates it for me to the same level as the raw Peace Sells, the genious-spark-lit Rust in Peace. A lot of the songs do suffer in terms of technical creativity, but the songwriting just creates a lot of groove, concept and melody. Symphony is incredibly overplayed, but is in fact a good song. The solo in Skin O' My Teeth is incredible in my opinion. I really enjoy the very light High Speed Dirt.
Yes, it is mostly light rock. You can compare it to other things from the era, like Alice in Chains. However, I think actual light rock in the ninties sucks, and Countdown is what it should been in the first place.
Now about most of the other albums, I don't give a dime. I have listened to every album, not all in full, because I sometimes lost interest. I'll mention a few that are remotely interesting to me.
Cryptic Writings: I'm on the side of those enjoying it. It is light rock, just like most of Countdown, but overall interesting. Surprisingly, less fine than Countdown, despite Dave having more experience. I attribute this to the rocky shift in styles that defined the metal scene at that time. Also not as interesting technically as Countdown. I do like Vortex, and especially Use the Man, which not a lot of people do.
From The System Has Failed, I like Tears in a Vial. That's it. Nothing else is even remotely interesting to me from that or other albums. Funnily, I get a Joe Cocker vibe from that song.
I listened to chapters 1-3 of the latest album. Chapter I. not only has the feeling of their old albums, it literally has their complete rehashed melody, since it is a ten times worse version of Black Friday. Extremely boring, very monotone, but the instrumentation is not as bad as 70% of their songs. Chapter II. is crap in its entirety, even worse than I. Chapter III. is nice! The songwriting does seem formula-based and forced though, but it is varied and I think some riffs are incredibly interesting. The "yeah, yeah, yeah" part is also some nice, enjoyable light rock.
This album is probably the writer's effort to use all of his experience and vast intellectual wealth to recapture the height of his talent. As expected, he does not succeed, as the approach itself is mistaken.

Rust in Peace is easily in the top 3 Metal albums of all time, of any genre, which coming from someone who yawns at the sole mention of "Thrash Metal" is saying something. All killer, no filler.
Their second best album is The System Has Failed, pristine in its underdog perfection, and definitely S tier.
