Charles Dowding is the Bob Ross of farming
"the beetroot like it because they're going in with their friends" My heart is melting
6 years later, this video is top notch still well ahead of most others . I hope y'all see how even these older videos are the most beautiful thing.
So nice of you thanks
It’s so peaceful listening to Charles teach about gardening.
charles is the gandalf of the gardening world!
always learn so much here
Bob Ross of the plant world
Even more peaceful doing it
It really is. What a kind, sweet man.
It truly is!!
Roots and refuge farm spoke of how she loved Charles and now, so do I. Wish I found him before, amazing. Thank You Charles
So nice to hear and thanks, they are fine people
The beetroot is my absolute nemesis! It hates me! Probably because I am the most irregular waterer in the world......... but next year I WILL SUCCEED! 💪
By the way, I loooooooooove how the leaves sound when the beets were pulled, so crispy, perfectly cared for!! 😍 music to my ears (my kids declared me an idiot when I watched/listened to that bit if the video over and over and over again)
Thanks Lemonie. Edward works hard on the sound effects and will love hearing this.
Another great one is the 'pop' when you pick a pea shoot! (hollow stems)
I should say as well, you will succeed.
I spent an hour thinning and replanting beetroot last weekend, bugger!! I won't plant another seed until I have seen how Charles does it first. Greetings from Tasmania, and Thanks.
Cheers Jim 😀
This guy is the man. Anyone who says they’re too old for UA-cam. Bug off! I love watching his videos. This is therapeutic!
Cool thanks
This is how a video is done people. Very well shot, good lighting and great presentation. I like how it shows everything from seed to harvest, very concise and fluid. Didn't "beet" around the bush with multiple videos either.
Many thanks for your appreciation (+ humour!), and the video quality is a credit to Edward's growing skills.
Excellent video all the way however all of Charles Dowding videos I have listened to I have a hard time with the audio being loud enough. Maybe no one else has this issue so I don't want to criticize it but I listen to other videos that i hear fine. But well done for sure.
Hi Cynthia, very odd. I listen on my headphones to reduce ambient noise. Hope you have a good day!
Thanks Cynthia we work hard on audio. Edward does not turn it up too much or you hear the local airplanes and lawnmowers!
RNAtoDNA uh no. Go sleep forever
I’ve watched probably 30 or so of Charles’ videos so far and continue to enjoy each moment. His presentation is truly unparalleled and his knowledge is sound. No bull on this channel. Thank you, Charles!
Thankyou Joe and I am happy you like them so much
Charles reminds me of my beloved father, who was a passionate farmer. Learning from him feels like learning from my father. As a kid I found it quite embarrassing, coming from a farmer‘s family. Later in life you come to understand your origin and the worth of what your parents showed you and taught you. I hope to have a very big garden some day. It is healthy in every way. 😊
Thankyou and that is so true
I like the passion he has and the steadiness in his voice, you can't afford not to pay attention. Thank you Charled
Too true!
This is a very topical post- I think people are learning through this virus situation just how important our farmers are. Our entire society depends on farmers!
I come from the same place. I was ashamed of my grandparents because others devalued them since they had pigs, chickens, and huge garden. Imagine that? Twisted values. Today I follow their footsteps and grow my own veggies.. I couldn’t be more proud of role models they have set up for me and my children. Land is a BLESSING FROM GOD! Blessings to all fellow farmers 😊❤
Newspaper lined compost bucket 🤯 Life changer!!!
my mother's idea bless her
Charles is the veggie boss man
Roots and Refuge Farm mentioned Mr. Dowding, so I'm here to learn some beets.
Everything seems so simple & easy when Charles demonstrates it ☺️
I'm just here because I love beetroot , I'm in the beetroot side of UA-cam again :)
Aww I love that. The beets like it because they're going in with their friends. 😊
That's why you can't beet a root.
I am so glad you cooked the stem and leafs as well. Because most people don't which is a shame their missing out on so much more.
This is so inspiring, so much so that this is my first comment ever on youtube!!
Yay! Thank you! Astrid
This videosaved me from thinning my beetroot and needlessly lowering my harvest. Thanks! Pretty cool how they don't need to be thinned much.
Anyone who says "I can't grow anything" should try beets. So easy and delicious and healthy
One thing I never really thought about until I started growing my own, was how much sugar they also put in pickled beetroot you buy in most stores. Its also worth mentioning and a funny story (but has a serious side too) that if you eat a lot of Beetroot, like I often do, your wee can SOMETIMES for some people turn dark. In fact when I first started eating Beetroot regulary, and a lot, this happened to me. I didn't know about this and it went nearly red so obviously worried, I went to the Dr, luckily the Dr asked me "Do you eat a lot of beetroot" and then we realized thats what it was. Thankfully. It doesn't seem to do it much to me anymore.
Wow! That is incredible. I always thought I had to thin my beets - but your crop speaks for itself. Thank you for sharing. A very well done video, I appreciate being able to see from start to finish. Can't wait till next spring when I can try your method!
Thankyou!
It's nice to know that transplanting beetroot is something you can do successfully! Seems like the prevailing wisdom is to always direct sow but here is the proof!
Great video! I love how you add personality to the beetroot. Made me smile, and it made so much sense growing them in clumps of four. Brilliant tip about twisting one out of the bunch at harvest time.
Glad you enjoyed it Ryan and thanks
This is lovely...My hubby and I love beets!
Charles Dowding has changed my allotment from digging to composting. Some of his applications was similar to mine but as I'm not as systematic as he I didn't do it the same way twice.
I'm enjoying his videos and to be more consistent more than once. Did do to many lettuce plants over winter as the slugs didn't attack them.
BEST VEGETABLE GUIDES
THANKS
Hooray how nice to read this Hans-Christian, and well done
That single raised bed is bigger than my back garden!
Thank you Charles!!! I was afraid to plant Beetroot. . . now I'm not and it will be in my garden next spring. Also as I'm in the US, appreciate you sharing temps and inches such as I can understand. You are an inspiration to me. . and my garden benefits from all you so generously share.
My pleasure, great to imagine your first beetroots Christine.
Having great success with beetroot here in Andalusia. I was very surprised to find out that where I live is sugar beet country! I grow beetroot nearly all year round out here.
Beetroot is such a great crop like carrots where you can just leave in garden till u want them for months.
I find it true not only for beets but for many vegetables. They simply don't taste the same. The number of vegetables I never buy because of that is really high!
So true.
Plus with homegrown we have the beneficial microbes for our guts.
I get goldfinches attacking my beet greens, but I love them so much and they are such timid birds that I let them have at it. Great video .
Haha, same here! And goldfinches are not interested in anything else in the garden, just the beets
I am from the Caribbean but live in USA . I am trying new vegetable just because I watch your videos and I want to know how they taste. I wish you had more videos like this with a little cooking summary.
Thanks Joel I shall bear that in mind. Maybe for 2021.
Charles makes it look oh so easy , reminds me of the top snooker players making the game look like childs play .
Charles, you are a genius! Your videos
are the best gardening videos out there - bar none. Better than those national TV productions. I thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and experience gleaned from decades of gardening.
Thanks Min, I appreciate that
Great video. I multi-sowed in mid-February but was anxious over not being able to find Boltardy.... quick search provides answer that state-side we refer to it as Detroit, which is what I sowed. LOL! Went downstairs at lunch to check the seedlings and performed the requisite thinning as needed. Thank you, Charles!
How interesting, it's like two languages and that sounds promising Jennifer.
@@CharlesDowding1nodig Yes. Usually I see it in the species rather than varieties (e.g. aubergine vs. eggplant). It makes me glad to have the Internet! :-) Cheers!
So good to see you cook!
Charles...your videos are the gardening version of the classic American TV show..."Mr. Rogers Neighborhood". Dignified, educational and pleasantly therapeutic...
Thank you!
That is nice to hear, thanks
Audio is always nice and clear. Nice clean presentation. No stupid long intros that are mysterically double the volume. Straight to the point. Very well put together. You say Edward edits them? He does a very good job!
Thanks, yes Edward, was 19 years old when we made this in 2017
Lovely video as usual! Thank you Charles!
Beautiful intro. Good info as always
Thank you!

Beautiful beets. Tfs. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Looking forward to trying these techniques, Charles! Thank you.
That mate is a beautiful garden i love it cheers
I am so glad I found this video. I learned something new! Thanks!
OMG, I didn’t know growing beetroot is soo easy. Can’t wait to set my seeds tomorrow morning before work. What a great video and a plus, now I know how what to do with the leaves 😀
You are so welcome
Beet greens are my favorite part of the beet! I was happy when my local grocery sold the beets with leaves attached but now I am growing my own, too! Good luck! Mine have started to pop up!
Excellent as normal Charles, beautifully done 👌🙏🏼x
Great video and lots of information.😀
Watching harvest is so soothing
Just looked at this in time I was thinning out to one seedling . Thanks
I have such a craving for beets and for beet greens right now.
Quite delightful...!
What stunning harvest. I've got to get some more planted soon. I love the greens steamed.
Thankyou
Great job! Very informative. I enjoy your tutorials. Thank you.
Thank you Charles. We will be growing beets for the first time this year and his was very helpful.
Dear Charles , I loved to see you cooking 🥦🥦🥦
I've discovered that beets, it's roots, leaves and stems are eaten in Korea...in soups, sauteed and served as a side dish, etc.
Very good site, easy to understand
First time I saw you cook Charles. I hope I see more of it as you make harvests from garden. Thank you so much.
Thanks, no dig lifestyle. In fact I make no knead bread, recipe is in the new book.
Thanks for the info. I love watching your videos, you're very inspiring. I will definitely buy your book.
Really nice video, great tips, thanks for sharing
I've had great success with a cylindrical beetroot named "Taunus". It grows well, cooks evenly, and makes for a nice presentation since all slices are about the same diameter.
Great tip! Tanja cucumber is good too!!
Cooking and Eating are my favorite parts!
I enjoyed your onion video and your beetroot video is a great video to keep too thanks 👍
So nice to hear thanks
Ho dear , i believe you're one of those generation where , simple way of life is truly appreciate ! like wise i do cook from my garden directly, seeing you doing your dish i was

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!
“They like being together with their mates”. 😂🤣
How have I missed this video‼️😱
Love beetroot, grow it most years, but more often than not, just roast it with garlic & Thyme ( delicious) had no idea your lovely lady has a cookery book out!!!
I’m off to ‘Amazon’ right now! 👏..... thanks Steph!
Beets and LEAVES, yummy!
I'm planting beetroot this year. Thank you for such a well-explained video.
I live in Los Angeles, and tried this approach in my allotment here. Worked beautifully. The best crop of beetroots ever. Except I am harvesting them in February.
I have missed your beautiful soul ... I am back and ready to enjoy more of your teaching, thank you so very much
It even sounds good at the start. Lovely. About to plant mine....2021!
Thank you SO MUCH for this idea. After years of only knowing to direct-sowing beets, I decided to give this a try. I've never grown such beautiful, healthy beets. With presoaking, the seeds germinate quickly and get a strong start in the trays. Harvesting when the roots are about egg-sized, I got four harvests (each a week apart), with all but the last having the most beautiful, long-stemmed greens one could hope for. This is THE way I'll be growing beets from now on.
Lovely result thanks Micah for your feedback
Greetings from Ourinhos sp Brazil! Tanks for shared!I have one simple yard back!I love garden and see the life growing
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!!!! Finally I've seen the beets and how you pick them from the soil. Thanks a bunch.Love your video.
I'm new to your channel and I absolutely love your video style and how informative these are! Please make many many more! 🖒☺
Thanks Alvina, we are working on it.
I've been cooking a dish I'm calling "Beeten Potatoes" and it is really good. Its basically a potato hash with diced potatoes, onions, pepper, and beets. I use the bulb from the beet, the stem and the leaves as well. It tastes alot like spinach and its oh so healthy.
We just bought some golden variety of beetroot yesterday and are about to plant some for fall. Looking forward to it.
Learning from you is always such a joy! Thank you for another great video.
💚
The intro is soooo beautiful. Very 'Peaceful Cuisine' :) Thanks for the beetroot inspiration
The intro was Edward's idea so he will be delighted to read this, thanks.
Charles Dowding Edward did good 🌿
@Charles Dowding please don't use a kitchenknife like this again - ever! it scared the living daylight out of me for your fingers! ;-)
and for the rest of the video: i actually belong(ed) to the type of people mentioned that only knew pickled beetroot before, until last year when i grew , harvested and ate my first selfgrown crop. your fine video just came in time to learn more, because this year it hasn't been going so well. my question is: you start early in feb. with a particularly suited variety, but how and how long can you resow, and how late can you harvest?
tia, s.
Thanks and it depends on your climate. Here my last sowing is late June. Or up to mid July for small roots. Last harvest before frosts of -4c/25F say November here.
I have a suspicion that Charles has been chopping veg for a good long while without taking off his fingers.
Beautiful beet roots and tops.
Thanks Carol
I grow lots of Beetroot for me and my chickens thay love it and it seems to over winter well.
hi great video brings back memories of the slow gentle life we used to have keep them coming I did not know you can eat the leaves is it best to cook them the way you shown have a good day
Thank you so much for your wisdom and your inner peace 🙏🏻💜
So welcome, grow well.
