I watched & enjoyed al 3 of your Vids on Beets, and learned everything I need to know, as I am going to be growing Beets for the first time in raised beds.. It was very helpful that you detailed the amount of time from seed starting to ready for transplant, and showed the progress and what I should expect them to look like along the way.. I have an indoor grow light system and now know how I should time it, for when I move them outside into beds -- which here in South Florida is early October.. I've watched many of your tutorials, and appreciate you sharing your knowledge with folks like myself who are eager to learn, and pass it along to others..

So, you are a country girl! (wink) I have about one more month before I will set tender plants in the garden, plants like peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. They will need warm weather to grow well. OAG
That was so informative! I actually thought you couldn't transplant beets and only direct sow. And I even think you separated the little clusters, I didn't think you could do that either. Thank you for such a great video 😊
Hi LBG, I am one of those people who don't listen to the so called experts who say you can't do something. When someone tells me "you can't do that" (especially about gardening), I tell them get out of my way while I do it! And yes, I did separate the little clusters of beet seedlings. You are welcome. *_Thanks for subscribing! Please share my channel on all your social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc Thanks for watching_* OAG
What a wonderful informative video. Now a subscriber too. I will be starting my beats in cells. I am so happy to see that you can separate and use the plants that came up, most say to thin or clip off. Thank you. First time I am starting ahead with them, normally I start in ground. I am looking forward in planting at spacing and no thinning needed. QUESTION…..how long do you keep your row cover on?
You should try direct sowing your beet seeds and not thin them. You can grow more beets in a smaller space. Beets dont need to be thinned, they will develop just fine. Just try it one season
I thought beets dont do well with roots disturbed?? so wondering if it might work better to just plant a soil block of 3 or 4 plants and then space each one of these blocks a few more inches and then not thin becuz they can be somewhat crowded if allowed space around...

Well I was looking on how to plant beets, and from the date this was 2 years ago from today. Very good info and will try to follow already have a small amount up from seed but may be awhile before we work ground in N.Alabama just topped off 10+" of rain for the week.

Thanks for your videos. Your tutorials are THE BEST. You really know what you are doing. I hope to be more successful by following your ideas. Where did you get that do-dad that forms the blocks of starter mixture, and also what is that mixture.
Thank you Virginia I truly appreciate your kind and encouraging words. The small tool is called a Soil Block Maker, buy it at Johnny's Seed Company, they are in Maine. The mixture, you can watch me mix up at: ua-cam.com/video/aJ05cr2MZXg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/cexZfl0oCFw/v-deo.html OAG
I was surprised to see you separating the plants and disturbing the roots. Also noticed you didn't water them in. If it works for you maybe it will work for me. Thanks !
Carol:I don't remember but probably if I didn't water the plants when I transplant them, it was probably because the soil was wet enough or rain was forecast for that night or the next day. BUT, watering them when you set them out is a good thing to do. And you noticed that I covered the small plants with some white material, that was to provide shade fo them until they could get established. OAG

Interesting question and I don't know the answer. It would depend on how short or how much of the root end you cut off. It might just dry up and die. OAG
Great video. Georgia here and I have tried to grow beets 3 times, the roots never develope. This July I will start some indoors and try your method -- hopefully it will yield a fall/winter crop.
If the roots do not develop, I would suspect fertilizer deficiency. What are you fertilizing with? Be sure to subscribe and watch as I will be uploading more videos as the summer growing season comes on. OAG
More fertilizer is not the answer. Chicken manure is too high in nitrogen for a root crop like beets. Do you know about NPK readings of fertilizer? OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener I don't use that much chicken manure. You said you were using triple 13? If that is 13-13-13 that is way stronger than even fresh chicken manure though probably slow release (I use aged chicken manure or top dress on the side to prevent root burn). I am in middle GA and have heard others have problems with beets here too, could be the clay/sand soil. Maybe starting them in seed cells will help.
I hear you and I don't think it is the amount of chicken manure you are using that is causing your beet growing difficulty, I do think it is the ratio of NPK, meaning too much N. You said the roots never develop, but you didn't specifically say what the leaves or tops do? So, what does the leaves or tops do? OAG

Hello and welcome to my channel. A lot of people say by following my instructions they have grown beets for the first time. So, I am happy if I can help you with growing your own beets. Did you watch my video on making pickled beets, its very easy and very good! You can see it at: ua-cam.com/video/XsS9dSwBwPI/v-deo.html
I appreciate your encouraging word to me and again thank you! I invite you to subscribe and watch as I upload more videos during the summer and fall growing season. Thanks for stopping by!

I did watch & enjoyed it, and saved the recipe for when my Beets are ready to harvest... Can't wait.. I've never done any canning before, and you made it look easy to do..
Caning is pretty easy, just some points that you must do for it to be safe. If you want to exchange more questions, then send me an E-mail at: chancock39@gmail.com
I am happy to help you! With your indoor grow light you can grow lots of things! Later I will make a video on the lettuce that I am growing under my grow light set up.

I had never thought about adding half strength tomato fertilizer on them when the first true leaves were growing out. I will definitely have to try that! I have some golden beets that have just sprouted up a few days ago that i think i will try this on, to see how it works.
Hello and welcome to my channel. I find that half strength works best for small seedlings. *_I will be a guest on Two family Homestead on 18 Sep, at 9pm EST, love to see you there._* Thanks for commenting on my video.

I can't wait to get my garden in, those beets look wonderful.
Hello and welcome to my channel. I love beets, any way they are prepared. Of course these aren't even close to ready to harvest but they will get there. Thanks for stopping by. Where do you live?
OAG
I am in Wilkes County, NC.
So, you are a country girl! (wink) I have about one more month before I will set tender plants in the garden, plants like peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. They will need warm weather to grow well.
OAG
Yes, country girl all the way...I'll be watching for those videos.
I will make another video with me planting the soil block. Thanks for stopping by.
OAG
I needed this the way you presented. Thank you 🙏
Dada ji.. Aap great ho.. :).. Thanks for the video.
I sometimes do it that way. Thanks for commenting. Please subscribe to my channel.
OAG
I thought beets dont do well with roots disturbed?? so wondering if it might work better to just plant a soil block of 3 or 4 plants and then space each one of these blocks a few more inches and then not thin becuz they can be somewhat crowded if allowed space around...
@@rnkim2564 that's why he put on the ag Cover for a few days at least, until the roots settled then they'll do fine.
Thankyou for the informative video. I'm waiting for my beet seeds to sprout now. Can't wait to put them in th ground 😊

Well I was looking on how to plant beets, and from the date this was 2 years ago from today. Very good info and will try to follow already have a small amount up from seed but may be awhile before we work ground in N.Alabama just topped off 10+" of rain for the week.
Hello and I am also in North Alabama. About where are you located?

@@OldAlabamaGardener Just North of Athens off 127.

Mighty fine looking Beets there, thanks for the tips. Well worth the back ache eh :)
They are amazing. I wonder if the leaves are edible to?
Yes, the young leaves are very good either in a salad or stir fried.

The mixture, you can watch me mix up at: ua-cam.com/video/aJ05cr2MZXg/v-deo.html

Could you cut the root end off and replant for a fall harvest?
Interesting question and I don't know the answer. It would depend on how short or how much of the root end you cut off. It might just dry up and die.

Im gardening hard for the first time in my life, hopefully i can get a good crop of late season blood turnips.
OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener I mainly use chicken manure from the chicken coop. I will try adding more fertilizer. Thank you! I just subscribed.
