About Super Mario's Wacky Worlds:
Super Mario's Wacky Worlds was a cancelled Mario platform game for the Philips CD-I. The games was made to be a sequel to Super Mario World, an SNES game released in 1990. While an early prototype of the game received positive feedback from Nintendo, the game was cancelled due to poor sales of the CD-I.
Super Mario's Wacky Worlds is about Mario in a series of wacky worlds including ancient lands, haunted worlds, jungle and icelands, & more. The game was attempted to duplicate the gameplay of Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo. Though the game's sprites are base on Super Mario World, the level design is based on Earth locations rather than the Mushroom Kingdom or Mushroom World.
This game was to be one of the few games in Philips deal with Nintendo that actually played like a Nintendo game whereas other titles such as Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Hotel Mario featured Nintendo characters and aspects of Nintendo gameplay, but were made without much more than concept approval from Nintendo in Japan and differed significantly from the NES/SNES games. Despite its ambition to look and play just like a real Super Mario game, this title was never completed due to the poor sales of the Philips CD-i. This game came to us as a donation so we decided to try it out!

Hello
Why does Mike never believe James is stuck
James: I'm stuck
Mike: let me see that controller
Mike: oh yeah ur stuck
If you had a friend like James you'd understand.
That Stick could have been a huge selling point for the CD-i
***** A Flat tip for the Philips amrite?
+357Sneak Yes!
Just as essential to the CD-I as the Paint Can was to the Amiga CD-32
Agreed
@@Ryan_Thompson_Guitarist Exactly 😆.
Fun fact: the same day this video came out, someone added the entry "Reset Bitch" on Urban Dictionary.
lmao
lol thats actually true!
Reset Bitch is the unlucky individual who has the utmost displeasure of bending down - most of the time leaving a comfortable position - to hit the reset switch on game consoles that were made prior to the year 2000. Reset Bitches are the person who is present in a group of friends that are gathered around a video game, and they usually don't get a turn on the video game themselves.
added on march 10 2014
and probably the same person write this comment, what a coincidence
@@Tekape even funnier is that I actually did not.

@Biff The dip It’s domain is Cheetahmen 2
You know, if this was completed it probably could've been okay especially compared to the other CD-I games
but it wouldn't beat 'flashback : the quest for identity', which is probably the only good game for cd-i.(even though it's a port of pc version)
@@phj9894 at least its still better than the xbox 360 remake XDDD
I dont think i have ever seen another game that unplayable
Each level must have been a part of the level, not there own levels.
That would explain why some of them are short
K
Thought the same, like the swamps are basically small underground sections for the pipes, the sections with those wierd M's look like the flagpoles to each level

@@RedDragon1444 go fuck yourself
Thanks.
The ancient levels are what I wanted Mario’s Time Machine to be like.
My hypothesis on this is that the levels are segmented. If you've been paying attention to the level select screen, Mike and James commonly run into the Giant "M" when they select the last "level" in any of the sub categories, (EX Cave 3 or Egypt 3.) The only real way I can explain this is by looking at the original Mario for instance; My bet is you all know how you can enter a pipe in Mario 1 and still be in the same level. I believe that the levels in this mediocre Mario game were supposed to operate in largely the same manner, except the level transitions (EX the pipes,) weren't implemented at the time.
I'm putting way too much thought into this than I should, but unfinished content, as well as debug menus interest me a great deal, regardless of the games quality.
BTW, if you're wondering why I didn't explain the giant "M" in Ship 2, secret exits, that's how.
This game prototype was developped in ONLY one week! It's amazing the developers could make so much in so little time in fact.
Is there a job opening for "Reset Bitch"?
*YOU CAN PAY ME IN VIRTUAL BOY GAMES!*
Nah don't be so modest just get me Magical Girl on the PC Engine and I will ve fine.
thebannednote mktwo I'd ask for a ticket to the Universal Studios in the Gamecube game. Then I'd throw barrels at sharks.
Magical girl? that sounds interesting o.o
Naku Chan Don't worry I will take the game off your hands if you have it. (Wink Wink)
No, I took the job. PLOT TWIST.
Imagine if this game WAS finished.
it could be good
This is th cdi we are talking about. I highly doubt it would be good
Felix Velazquez Yeah.... I mean in some levels you dont even know where you can jump. Just like the CDI zelda games. Most likly it would have horrid cutscenes.... LOTSA SPAGHETTI. TOO MANY TOASTERS.....

I wish Super Mario World had a direct sequel, It was my favorite game on the SNES.
That stick is more high tech than the CD-I....
It's like an unholy marriage of Mario and Action 52.
Thank you guys SO MUCH for going through the torture! It was worth it for me! This was an M. Effin' experience!

"Nerds and sports don´t mix". -Mike Matei, 2014.
This actually looks pretty interesting and decent. Too bad it never got finished!
Even Big Rigs was more functional.
Now a game that is less functional than Big Rigs is hard to come by!
Big rigs was released this wasn't
They're BOTH unfinished.
Michael Pruette even desert bus is more fun then this game
Big Rigs was officially finished (officialy means it must be released) as it was released but there were hella bugs
I bet this game would have been awesome, if it was finished... and on the snes :T
...And a completely different game XD
It was completed and put on the SNES. It's called Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
"You stuck?" "yeah" "lemme see....yeah, you're stuck" lmao!
**Stage select shows Greek** "It's like you are in ancient Rome..."
Also, what did you expect? This qualifies as pre-alpha at best.
*****
Whoop-dee-doo.
These videos are the only good thing about Mondays.
Mike's face when he has to reset is absolute gold lol!
I'm guessing the different levels are would all the same level (like Ice 1 and 2) except they were the different areas serrated by the pipes. This could explain why some levels don't appear to have a finish.
DUHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The devs literally threw this together on short notice, to show to Nintendo (who was actually impressed). I'm actually surprised this pre-alpha is even out there in the wild, considering it's like 1% done.
This was really interesting because it gives an idea what the developers are doing before they complete a game. I'm certain that even the very first Mario game had a lot of glitches and mistakes before the programers completed it. Watching this almost shows us the mind of a game creator. Thanks for sharing this game.
Am I the only one that was super excited about the koopa's hats? That was dope!
This game needs to be re-made. It looks too good to be unreleased.
Had indeed some really good ideas. But It was not only unfinished, I think they didn't manage it to be functional...
***** Barely like action 52 with a bad cartridge.
***** wasnt even started
I think they just did remake it... think about it...
I was actually going to use the name Geometropolis in one of my stories, but I decided to go with Geo City instead.
The best part of this video is the stick .
Makes me laugh at how there are so many games out today for full retail price that are as unfinished as this one. I'm looking at you Day 1 Gary's Incident!
Big Rigs was worse than Gary's Incident, at least Gary's Incident you didn't fall through the floor every 3 seconds.

A moment of silence for those fans who died of their epilepsey this episode
I'm lowkey shocked they didn't include a warning
Whats creepy is, the same ghost looking plants in the background on the swamp levels are similar if not the same as the "Hell's Trees" A.K.A. The things that look down and watch you in Super Mario Galaxy 2: Shiver Burn Galaxy. The fact the game isn't done just makes it more creepy.
They look nothing alike
"Hey, should we do 1 complete level? Like vertical slice?"
"Nah. Make 30 levels, and we'll P wing it from there."
"IT'S A PROTOTYPE!!!" -Double D
Honestly, considering this was a quickly done (2 weeks) PRE-ALPHA stage prototype that's main point for being made was to present the concept and sprite porting to Nintendo, it's pretty impressive what they did. I would have liked to see what some of these levels would have been like had it gotten into alpha or beta development.
I'm really glad that James decided to do a movie, but much happier that its nearly done! The real reason why we're all here is because of his AVGN episodes. James, don't forget that!
"Im stuck in the hole, I can't get out! I dont want to play this game anymore!!" hahahahahahaha
at 4:33 when he jumps back up from the sand, there's a short Yoshi-Mounting-sound, LOL!
Why did Mike have to test every single time James got stuck? I'm pretty sure James tried pressing all of the buttons, lol.
This was ungodly unfair of them to bash this game as being bad.
No, it wasn't "unfinished" or even "partly done". This was made as a demonstration to Nintendo as to the very basics of the game. What it'd look like, how it would transfer to the CD-I and what kind of level themes the game would have.
The actual game never even got started, because Nintendo turned it down. This wasn't the game. Not even part of the game. It was just the game's looks and mechanics used to show what levels would vaguely look like.
Hell, Nintendo actually said they were IMPRESSED with this project and what they were shown of the ideas for the game, but they didn't want to go through with it.
Nintendo were IMPRESSED. If NINTENDO themselves were impressed it must have been pretty good.
someone with a lot of skill could actually take that unfinished game, finish it and make it fun .
Alpha and Beta Henna Pepe sucks.
If they have that much skill they may as well start from scratch.
we can only hope
I remember a passing mention of this game in the past, I never thought a physical copy existed! Gotta say, glad you guys posted this. I always wanted to see this game. Levels would've been unique and cool, it's just too bad it was never finished.
Welcome to the world of QA testing, boys!
Now imagine doing that for 8 hours a day and writing up every bug you see into a detailed report.
-QA Tester for 2 years.
I got nothing but respect for you man, making sure my games run smooth and bug free.
clemente garcia Thanks. It is indeed work, and it consists basically of what James and Mike are doing here... going through unfinished, buggy software with a lot of placeholder art, having the patience to deal with constant freezes and crashes and resetting the application over and over again.
It is pretty rewarding, though, to catch an annoying bug and have the devs fix it, knowing that you saved other gamers from ever having to experience the annoyance it would have caused.
Stinger911 But just to dispel what you've seen in some of those cheesy "become a game tester" commercials, gaming QA is not just 2 guys on a couch, lol. You're typically on a team of several people all networked together (with desks and computers and stuff) and you're communicating and helping each other isolate issues.
It can be a lot of fun or a grind depending upon what title you have to test and also who your coworkers are.
How do you get into that line of work? I've seen those ad spam commercials, but nothing real. I've always wanted to be a tester, not because I think it's incredibly easy (I know it's not), but for my love of video games.
Simon Von Bill Basically two methods. There is outsourced QA where you help developers from a remote location and communicate with face-chat and stuff. Or you can be an embedded tester at the dev's location, where you interact with them more closely.
Many big publishers these days are moving toward outsourced QA because it allows for more people testing their titles, often at lower wages.
Look for these in your area.
You don't really need a degree or anything special. You just have to show an aptitude for finding bugs and have good writing and people skills. The people who suck shit at the job are let go fast.
I assume that the reason he can't move sometimes is an entity hits him, and the game registers Mario as "dead" as for when you fall into the ground, you cannot move, making that theory a little more sensical.
Except sometimes it seems to defy even that logic and let you keep on going after running into a guy. The game's consistent in its inconsistency, at least.
I think this had potential to be decent - I think it's pretty obvious that Egypt 1, 2, 3 etc are just different parts of the same level that were going to eventually be connected via the pipes. I presume the "M" symbol is supposed to be the exit that would take you to the next level.
Ancient Rome?! With trojan horse??
+ShotokanEditor rome is in greece
***** its true
***** no im not
***** Well.. to be precise it is in the odiernal Turkey in the Dardanelles strait! It was featured in the both Iiliad, the Odissey and quoted on the Aeneid, that's why you thought it was in Greece! :)
Alberto Balsalm Yeah, you got the idea... x)
I commend you guys for sticking through, and at least attempting to play through all of the levels. thanks
It was 20 minutes and they're making shitload of money. Oh the agony...
dikkeroege i guess you could look at it like that, but my point was, the game was really broken and it must have been very frustrating to have to reset the console and wait for the game to load almost every second.
Super Mario's Wacky Worlds now packaged with Mario Stick
Wow somebody actually donated this game to you guys? This game is extremely rare only 3 prototype copies exist and at least 1 or 2 of them were sold on ebay. This person must've been very generous to donate such a rare and valuable game to you guys. You should consider yourselves lucky :).
Everyone can burn the prototype themselves, you know...
Slim Jim 420 the cdi has no copy protection, you just have to download the iso and burn it
Honestly if they finished this it might have been pretty cool. I like how you can go to real places and the enemies match the places.
+Charleyyy and Friends it gets sadder when you realize that someone can make a rom hack of Mario World and recreate this.
Everyone is complaining how this is a bad video? Not their best but I find it pretty funny. Then again were all different. Also be more thankful I didn't even know this was a thing..
If this was finished, it would actually be pretty good, especially for the CD-I.
You know what... Looking at this it seems more like these numbers on each place like "Swamp" or "House" don't represent individual levels, but that they're all parts of one level, like Swamp 1-6 is just one (swamp) level. That would explain how sometimes there's just one screen with the goal or something and also often it looks like for example 3 picks off where 2 ended. Like there being a pipe on one part and then on the next there's the same pipe with similar layout.
It's a shame this game wasn't finished, to me it looks like it had potential to at least be decent if it was actually finished and made to work like a Mario game. The levels look pretty cool but it kinda sucks you can't really play any of them.
Had this actually been finished it looks like something that would have been kind of cool and different. I love the little koopas in outfits.
In all of the time since this game's near-release, you'd think one diehard Mario fan with too much time on their hands would've taken this unfinished product and expanded upon it.
23:56 STICK BOY!
This was really exciting for me to see I've always wondered what the deal was with this game and you guys getting the unfinished copy is atleast some kind of satisfaction for me. Appreciate the video guys :D
Just think for a minute..... if this game was complete..... it could have been the sonic cd of CD-i
xXL3g3NdLaloXx still, is one of the best cd-i games, so... it still would be the Sonic cd
Most of the art in this was probably temporary
They should play brutal mario world.
***** Shut up meg .
Frumpis Brinkleton random LoL reference in there...
19:00
You can just walk over it? You can just walk over it.
This looks like a very early prototype, probably more to show artwork style then anything else, and as that it's actually pretty decent. I don't know how much time was spent on this, but if it's sometng like one to two month then that's what you'd expect
I felt like they were way too harsh on this one. I'm not really sure what they were expecting from the unfinished prototype of an unreleased game; personally, I thought allot of the worlds looked really creative, and the artwork is actually kind of beautiful at times. If only it was finished.
I liked the art, there were a lot of cool effects, kind of wish they did finish it, looks like it had potential
iDan, even if it WAS on a crappy console, that console COULD'VE had good games if they just took the time.
Take the Sega Megadrive, it sucked, but it was still had a few games that were good in my opinion.
Did you mean megadrive or mastersystem? because the megadrive was the Genesis.
mizkid1234 Megadrive. SPECIFICALLY the Megadrive CD.
If you think they were being harsh on an unreleased game, check the AVGN video of Cheetamen 2.
9:25
That's my "O" face
Yes
The first thing I look at when a new video is posted is the duration. Yay! over 25 minutes of fun :D
Usually it's 9 to 15 mins. The longer the better ;)
That's what she said.
CityXV
A whole 4 minutes of lovin' baby
6:39 Gotta say, I like the background for this level
At least there were a FEW creative ideas inside this unfinished pre-pre-pre Alpha version. The way the reflective water turns into transparent water once Mario falls in. The art style including the nice color cycled translucent waterfalls.
It could have had potential. BUT, we'll never know now. Had me a good handful of laughs here. It's almost like we are all in your living room wondering who will have to turn on/off (not reset) the CDi. HEH
Good stuff!
These kind of broken and glitched games did always depressed me in a way I can't explain. I think in the lives of their creators and I feel really sorry for them for not having seen his dreams fulfilled.
I take solace in the fact that by the looks of things this game wasn't headed anywhere good.
Though in the case of the Phillips CDI development team, all of their games were HORRENDOUS cash-ins that were barely playable even when complete. They were either entirely unconcerned with satisfying their customers at all, or if they actually gave a shit then they were among the worst game developers in history.
If you liked unfinished games, try the first version of Resident Evil 2, is unplayable like this mario game, but is really interesting
Oh man, I almost forgot about that. Now gonna check the videos on it on youtube.
I'm pretty sure the thing where the controls lock up and you can't move is because mario is getting killed, but the death animations and other events like resetting the stage aren't programmed in yet. as far as what's killing you in certain areas, who knows.
What about when he touches a wall?
The thing with Neon City is there was no programmed graphic for it. All you see is the wireframe and the template image that they most likely used when they were making the game. And they just didn't get to load the graphic in time. The blue areas are solid parts that would block your movement and parts that you'd walk on.
The green screen looked like an atari game.
yeah its the masking map to sewe what you can and cant walk on
I think most of those weren't exactly "stages" but parts of one stage like the swamp one is one stage
Hey, Mike's Elvis is pretty good. I like James's t-shirt, too.
Not sure about the CD-i, but it looks like Wacky Worlds could have been a decent game with some fun levels, if only the devs had anywhere close to completing it.
The Philips CD-I intro was one of the most charming things Ive ever seen
Like if u want these guys to play Conkers Bad Fur Day.
"I am the Great Mighty Poo

I can't believe that I watched this whole video .but your my heroes for actually doing this video.
11:26-11:59 Mario's like "fuck my life…."
The Glitch Gremlin must be having a field day with this game
The Glitch Gremlin is having a field day with this game.
That is because it is an unreleased game, and most likely still in its pre-alpha stage of development.
20:00 - WOOOOW! Expert glitch running through that ice level! Whoa!
Kinda wish they would've completed it. This is the only CD-i game I've ever seen that had at least SOME potential. And that's saying a lot considering just how many horrible games there are on the CD-i.
What's sad is they released Hotel Mario, as if that would be a better game, than a sequel to Super Mario World. I mean really?? REALLY?! Who thought that a game that takes away all the awesome elements of Mario, would be better than a sequel?!
This might have been started after the unholy ones (HM and the Zeldas), but never got that far because people never bought the system (and with good reason).
Well obviously nobody bought the system, and can you blame them? With game choices and designs such as "Hotel Mario", who can blame them? There wasn't really enough quality put into their games.
Just look at Neo-Geo. It was expensive like the CD-i, but was a lot better since it was all about high quality.
Oh agreed, there were bad decisions all around. Just probably too late to turn the ship around at this point.
Totally too late to turn the CD-i around now. It's just mind bloggling the stupidity some of these companies have is all.
I started taking a chug of beer for every reset... drunk by the end.
I see potential here. Broken (unfinished) game mechanics aside the graphics are impressive. The reflection in the Iceberg level and the ripple effect from the underwater levels are surprisingly well done. If someone were to finish this game I'd totally play it
Looks like this would've made a great title. Wouldn't it be great if someone would finish it today???
Someone might be able to make it as a SMW hack. I wouldn't be surprised.
+BMasterToronto78 Even the ORIGINAL Atari still gets new games. Anything is possible.
+Don Van Blaricom How can they "finish" this almost non-existent game? Most stages are just placeholders. If someone were to "finish" this it would be an almost completely new game!
OMA2k Well somebody could learn to program CD-I games, like people did a long time ago, and finish it. An alternative would be to hack the rom disk image of it and turn it into a completed game.
+Don Van Blaricom But the problem is there is almost no game to be "completed". It would almost be a new game from scratch, just using a few sprites from this game here and there. Not worth the effort.
MIKE JUST QUOTED JOURNEY I AM NOW HAPPY YES
taskenlander Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin' !!!! If I ever see a Journey arcade machine, we'll have to do a J&MM about it
Cinemassacre I've never seen these guys reply back. This totally made my day :)
Cinemassacre Can u make a video about something good?
Baby Mario's crying does NOT ruin Yoshi's Island. You would have to be extremely sensitive *and* get hit *constantly* to think so. Yoshi's Island is a frickin' masterpiece! Come on, James!
22:11
James: Gotta use the blunt end of the stick
Mike: Can you use a blunt?
same mike. same.
The weird ghosts things in the background remind me of the Hell Valley Sky Trees from Super Mario Galaxy
If anyone is good at modding and wants a challenge, let's see if you can put this game together.
They should've held the CDi on their knees :))
The cord was probably not long enough for that otherwise I'm sure they would've done that.
I really need to stop falling asleep watching these vids! THE DREAMS MAN!!!!!!
You should review the Phillips CD-I Reset Stick
