"Homer³" is, frankly, an iconic moment in animation. CGI was still really new, this episode actually came out only one month before Toy Story hit theaters. Imagine back in the 90's when CGI was still really primitive and nobody had really seen something on that level yet, hell it still looks good today and back then it was way better than any video game. I remember the next day at school everyone was talking about how mind-blowing it was.

    • @IAsimov
      @IAsimov 4 роки тому +4

There's something viscerally terrifying in it, especially if you're a kid. Not for the gore itself, but the fact school itself is a stressful environment for some children, where some grown-ups can scare you and some schoolmates can bully you. The feeling that it is a place from which your parents cannot, or would not, save you from it, is what further drives it home.
In the episode, Bart and Lisa tell their mom Marge about it, but she angrily shoots them down, saying that 'she cannot solve all of their problems' and that 'she should look at them in their faces and tell them "Do not eat me" '. I know it is meant to be something silly to justify the horror episode, but a kid doesn't know if their parent will save them from everything.
Combine the frightening scenario of a school and its grown ups as it is, the gore and cannibalism of this episode played for horror, and the child fear of your parents not being there to help you when you're defenseless, and that shit scars.
90's cartoons did not fuck around.

Treehouse of Horror 1 in S2 is the best, in my opinion. You've got a classic Twilight Zone sci-fi/horror parody of "To Serve Man", a haunted house/poltergeist short that has some of the best creepy imagery in the entire show, and the Raven, a seriously well executed take on the raven, using almost all real text from the poem. But funny and creepy at the same time! Then Homer's reaction after hearing it, the terror in him. It's so good.
It's the episode that introduced the concept, and people liked it so much they decided to make it a yearly thing.
Also kinda shocked you left off the S8 episode, with Bart's "evil" twin, the genesis tub and the Kang/Kodos 96' election episode. None of those were bad either! Just my 2c though. I did like your picks.

I agreed with this mostly, but I would of liked to have seen I or II on here since I have quite a soft spot for them. In II I love lisa’s and bart’s nightmares (especially barts) and thought homer’s was okay. As for I, I love all 3. The first one is a hilarious parody of haunted house films that had me in stiches. The second one (the best imo) is an absolute classic. It’s a parody of an alien abduction story and I love how ridiculous it gets when they blow more and more dust of the book to reveal what it actually says. And the twist that the aliens were genuinely nice was just brilliant. And then the final retelling of the poem the raven was spot on with the right amount of dramatic poetry performance interlaced with comedy. And the ending is absolutely chilling.

Treehouse of Horror III is a personal favorite of mine, and I understand the narrative at 8:41. Lisa finished her story, and while on commercials, Homer is telling his story. From what I interpreted from what he was talking about, it sounded like he was talking about the Flintstones. Anyway, it was just an attempt to change the story from one character to another.

It's a shame that on your number one spot you didn't mention how it is awesome that each short is linked by groundskeeper Willie where is tires to save someone in each short but ends up getting killed in each one, ending with him saying "I'm bad at this."
That's the bit I love the most 😂

I hope you'll be looking at the Watership Down remake that's coming up.
It's said to be less visually intense, which I personally think will take away from the dark, thought-provoking aspect of the story. Yes, the 70s movie was very disturbing, but when we tell stories about the viciousness of nature (Watership Down) and the horrifying reality of animal cruelty (Plague Dogs), you should be disturbed.
Every kid should watch at least one realistic and/or brutal "family" show with their parents, even if it scares them. It's important to encourage discussion about difficult subjects. Naturally, the violence in Watership Down definitely deserved a PG rating. It's not a film to chuck your 8 year old in front of by themself; it's something to watch with them once you feel they're at the right age to understand it.
I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the remake's tamer approach and how effective it is not only as an adaptation of the novel but also how it stands up against the 70s film.
(I'm personally intrigued though reckon it'll be good, especially looking at the cast - the 3D cgi style looks boring to me though, as I love the watercolour look of the original film)

The final one was my only treehouse of horror episode I had and my favourite joke was Willy constantly getting axed in the back
In the first part homer axes him in the back as a parody of when Jack Torrance kills the caretaker in the original. In the second one homer after altering time again opens the door to see Willy saying how he’s not in his original time and he can help him only to be axed in the back by a talking Maggie. And in the third one when the kids are running from the teachers Willy who is the only one who hasn’t been eating the children rushes to save them but gets axed in the back by Skinner and then says “uhk am bad at this” before collapsing. I loved this special and your videos

Obviously I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but regardless, great video. Choosing "The Best" TOH episode "overall" allowing for individual weaker segments has always been a really tricky one.
Personally, my all-time "overall" favourite is a far less common choice - 'Treehouse of Horror II'. Three AWESOME segments (without official titles, I believe) - The Monkey Paw, Omnipotent Bart, and Mr. Burns stealing Homer's body to become a robot. Each solid, overlooked entries and - after the decent but "finding it's way" original TOH, really setting the template and showing what the format could do.
TOTIII comes in a close second - again 'Clown Without Pity' and 'Dial "Z" For Zombies' are classics, but personally I always felt 'King Homer' wasn't quite as strong (hey, to each their own). Conversely, TOT5 regularly seems to be voted a favourite by many, but whilst 'Time and Punishment is one of my favourite individual TOH segments... I'm a very weird breed in that 'The Shinning' and ''Nightmare Cafeteria', which good, have never been personal favourites of mine.

One THOF short I remember is where Homer hears of a place made out of candy and embarks on a journey to the place, later he tries to take a short cut across mountains, slips and gets his arm caught between a rock and is stuck in a valley. He then tries to eat his arm off but eats his other limbs but the trapped one.
Clearly a parody of James Franco's 127 Hours

15:59 I saw this when it was first aired. And I recall no cutaway from the scene where Milhouse falls into the giant blender. This was the episode that truly scared the living shit out of me as a child and it made me terrified of seeing blood and gore. After seeing this episode and the fog, I had to turn the channel whenever an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon would appear in an episode.
I laugh at it now as this is the type of shit I enjoy. But needless to say, I won't see this episode as anything else except the terrifying memories I had of it as a child.
