How the hell are they able to watch this outlandish display of skill.... and just stand there - arms folded, or hanging at their sides?? He should have kicked them all out and kept rocking just for the fun of it!! LOLOL... They all suqqed!
Ok so now that I got that out of the way, lolol... I know I'm late, but I honestly just got hip to Phil X a few weeks ago over Xmas break. Ive never really been into Rock or Metal... But now Phil makes me want to start playing the guitar lol.
I'm a black man who grew up on James Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, Prince, Isley Bro's-(Who did have a lot more guitar in their music than pretty much any other black R&B group of the 80's, and they were my first exposure to the guitar that I actually liked.... [Prince came later.])....
But as I've gotten older and opened up my thinking more and became more open to other music.. .I started discovering 'Twisted Sister", "Korn", "Nickelback", "Limp Bizkit" - [who actually crossed more into the Hip-Hop zone with Jay-Z]... so it was easy to get hip to them.
So I'm still not big on Metal & Rock.... BUT... I KNOW A FUQQIN MUSICAL GENIUS WHEN I SEE ONE - NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF MUSIC HE PLAYS... But in Phil's case, I think he goes beyond "Musical Genius" - because he can literally play ANYONE ELE'S music! THOSE GUYS who's music he's playing are "Musical Genius's".... Phil X however,... is a "GOD OF GUITAR & SONG" -- PERIOD!!
The way he digs into those guitars and literally WRINGS THEM OUT like a washcloth and throws them around like they're nothing.... without missing a beat!! lolol... It's really intense to watch lol... I LOVE IT!
Also, the EXTREME ENERGY, STRENGTH & POWER he exhibits on stage and during concerts... I mean damn! That's not normal. To be able to grind on those guitars like that with that kind of speed and accuracy for HOURS... is beyond NORMAL human ability.
I started playing (trying to anyway..) the keyboard recently, and right away I noticed that I have to get my finger strength & coordination built up to a VERY high level to be able to play effectively and for extended periods. I see that guitar is far more extreme than keyboard, because both hands are doing something entirely different!! On keyboard they are doing almost the same thing.
Just watching these videos, and the ultra-complex finger-work he's able to do in MICRO-SECONDS of time... again... beyond normal human ability! NORMAL people sit at a damn computer for a few weeks and end up with carpal-tunnel just from sending a few memos & emails every day LOL... But this guy is able to do that extreme finger-work for HOURS straight through. smh...really amazing! No way I could do that straight through a 5 minute song... that takes YEARS to build up to.
Yeah I know all of Rock groups are out here doing the same, but it's different here because Phil isn't some big "AC/DC" or "Led Zeppelin" level superstar.... Dude is still doing demos for the music store "Fretted Americana"... which keeps him 'reachable' for us little people, and he can get on there and be goofy and have fun and laugh.
That makes a big difference. Playing obviously makes him really happy and it comes through - as well as his outrageously high energy level is apparent on those videos, which is hilarious... because it's like he can barely stand still long enough to make the clip lol.
Anyway, sorry to make this so long... I'm just really excited to stumble upon a true Guitar God in this day & age... I thought most of the Gods had left already with BB King & Hendrix, James Brown etc... , I missed the careers of all of them. I caught the tail end of the "GOD"father of Soul - James Brown's career when he was still making records (barely)... So it's good to see there's a few still among us. :)
I am going to be introducing more black folks to Phil X and his music & videos... more people really gotta see this guy - he is a mega-talent not to be missed!
Ha ha yousaida lot but I'm with you all the way. I just put this on randomly on the street on crappy headphones and it takes all my willpower to not start bouncing around.

Yet another case of : "How the hell did he do THAT?" Amazing guitar playing and solid rhythm section.
There is a great crowd in this town. I don't think anyone in the crowd is worried about the level of the bar so to speak. Don't judge them too hard by the few little clips in these videos. They are out for a fun night supporting their friends on stage and some people in the audience have seen Phil 30-40 times over the years. One guy came up to me and showed me tickets he had saved from a show we had with Phil in the 80's.

@Mattydilly I respect your opinion but I'll never get that "soul" and "feel" are separate from "technique." I'll be the first to say that some so-called shredders don't move me but to say that Phil's blazing lines lack "soul/feel" is ridiculous. He plays them with such a reckless abandon, intensity, and aggression that knock me on my ass with "feel." Plus his note selection is just sick.

@enjolras56 i guess everyone gets that feeling from something different. I would agree that he has good feel and is a great composer but i really feel it gets lost in translation. Kinda seems like he's trying to impress with fast cool sounding stuff. and thats not bad but its not pure expression when his playing is so very methodical and notey. what I'm trying to say is that sugar is sweet in coffee, but its not that great if their is more sugar than coffee. If that makes sense lol.
Phil was born in the wrong year
I always heard my whole life about the clean playing but until you are really really getting there you won't get it. I can use a Strat through a 5 watt Gretsch G5222 and still get all the fragile harmonics as from any other tube amp because its not the amp at this point and its not the guitar. Its my hands, they are strong. I do go through fret wire like a crackhead but the tone is unbeatable. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
No wonder Phil is constantly having to retune!!!! hahahha!

@1Guug i did, I'm a huge fan of phil but i don't like it. I really think he goes to overboard with the amount he plays. i think hendrix or srv just feel out the song way better so it feels better. I'd rather a song be played with better feel than more technique. I think he's a genius but hendrix or srv have more soul and thats what i look for in playing.

Everyone uses way to much gain, its honestly, and yes I know its gonna piss people off, very few people can ACTUALLY play guitar. I have a test, If your playing super high gain play it normal, then take it down to completely clean. If you don't sound the same clean. i.e. smooth and with sustain its not the amp.
